WINN FAMILY GATHERS FOR REUNION

Milton-Freewater ---- More than 45 descendants of Oregon Pioneers gathered in Milton-Freewater the weekend of June 30 to July 2. This reunion of Winn Family members was organized by those related to Zadok and Elizabeth (Brecheen) Winn and their sons Jesse Zachariah Newton Winn from Arkansas and Minor Hampton Winn of Missouri. Those present at the reunion found that their ancestors have been tracked back to John Winn, an immigrant from Wales to Virginia in the early 1600s.

Jesse Winn and three of his siblings migrated from Arkansas to western Oregon shortly after the end of the Civil War. In 1869, Jesse married Ann Grazelle Taylor, who came from Iowa to the Oregon Territory by wagon train in 1852. Ann's father was Eber Taylor. His children married into the Winn, Baird and O'Harra families, early residents of Lane and Umatilla counties. Descendants of the Winns and O'harras are still residing in Umatilla County.

Elizabeth Winn, daughter of Minor and Jane (Patrick) Winn, married Calvin James in Missouri. The family moved to Umatilla Country in the early 1880s, settling in the Van Sycle area. Elizabeth and Calvin died prior to 1890. The only known remnant of the family's time in the county is Calvin's gleaming white tombstone, which is located in the middle of a grain field near Helix. Elizabeth's gravesite has not been found. The James children moved on to other parts of the Northwest following their parents' deaths.

The reunion began with a no-host supper at the Fountain Restaurant in Milton-Freewater on the evening of June 30. The main portion of the reunion came the next day when the Winn relatives gathered at the Milton-Freewater Chamber of Commerce building, using the Rotary Room facility for their family history discussions. On Sunday, reunion attendees were treated to singing by the musical Peyton Winn family and tour of the large, red barn and old home site on the Winn farm, well-known strawberry producers for nearly 50 years. The reunion ended with a visit to the gravesite of Jesse, Clarence and Tina Winn in the Weston Cemetery.

Direct descendants of Jess Winn's sons and one daughter were in attencance. The Lley Miles Winn, Henry Eber Winn, George W. Winn, Albert Morgan Winn and Ada Lroetta Winn Saunders families were all represented at the reunion. (the papers spelling of names.)

Also present were descendants of Minor Winn. The connection between Jesse Winn and Elizabeth Winn James was only recently discovered through the efforts of family genealogy buffs Kay Roth and Robert D. Saunders, Jr. Saunders has been researching the Winn ancestors for more that 30 years, traveling all over the nation gathering information for his archives.

Local Winns assisting in the reunion were Bob and Imogene Winn, their son, Preston H. and his wife, Arlene Winn, from Weston, and Peyton R. Winn from M-F. This is only the second reunion in this area for these family members in the last 30 years.

Recognized homeowners in 1861 by the Wilson's Creek Battlefield and their approximate locations per the 1860 Greene County Census

Larkin Winn reportedly owned the farm near where the Pulaski Arkansas Artillery took up position during the battle. It is reported that after the battle, the Winn's left Missouri and moved to Arkansas.

GEORGE W. WINN celebrates Eighty-first Birthday Jan 6

Wednesday, Jan 6, 1960 markied the 81st anniversary of the birth of George W. Winn, lifelong Weston Vicinity resident.

Mr. Winn, or just plain "George" as he prefers to be called, was entertained at a birthday party, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peyton Winn in Weston, where members of the immediate family gathered to honor him and his wife on the happy occasion.

George has always been an expert story teller, and this reporter was able to glean the information set down here because of reminiscences of by-gone days that several incidents at the birthday party recalled.

George Winn was born on Jan. 6, 1879, the fourth of eight children of Jesse and Ann Grazell Winn. All but the eldest of the children were born on the Winn farm 2-1/2 miles north of Weston on a branch of Little Dry Creek. Jesse Winn bought the original ranch from a homesteader and at that time there were only 10 acres broken out of bunch grass. Here the family grew up, five boys and three girls. George, his brother Henry, and his sister Lillian Saunders, all residents of Milton-Freewater, are the only members of the family still living.

The farm has been in continuous production since the early 1870's. George tells of the trials in farming this area in those days, recalling that his father used to use a post hole digger to test the depth of soil moisture in the spring. If there was as much as 1 foot of damp soil found by such a test, he would plant a spring grain crop. If there was not that much moisture, he would summer-fallow the land, and wait until the next year to plant a crop. Some of the best land in the wheat-pea area today was thought to be nothing but bunch grass and squirrels by some of the Weston Mountain residents at that time. After all, they, the mountaineers, were close to wood and water, while the farmers in the lowlands were thought to be much too far from these necessities of farm living. George tells of how his father brought the first red chaff wheat into the country from the Willamette Valley, and that this wheat revolutionized wheat farming because the new variety was so superior to the older strains.

Jesse Winn died in 1888 when George was nine years old leaving the young widow with her big family. The years after that were hard ones, and George tells of following a walking plow when he was nine years old, helping his brother perform the farm labor. The old Oliver "foot burner" plow can still be seen on the Winn farm, occupying a vacant fence corner near the farm shop.

One by one George bought the interest that each of his brothers and sisters had in the ranch, completing the task in 1937. This had been a driving desire of his life - to own all the farm upon which he was born ahd raised. To help him in this work, George chose a wife in 1921, when he and Anna Peyton Compton were married in Walla Walla. Anne Compton Winn had been associated with the music departments of both Whitman College and Columbia Junior college in Milton, before and after her marriage. She also had charge of the music department of McLoughin Union High school in Milton-Freewater after her marriage, and directed church choirs in Walla Walla, Weston and Pendleton over the course of her life.

Three children were born to George and Anna. Their daughter , now Mrs. Chester L. Reed (Ellen) lives in Burbank, CA, while Peyton and Bob live at Weston, where Bob is associated with his father on the wheat, livestock and irrigated operation. George has five grandsons and four granddaughters, all very proud of their "Grandpa George" as they affectionately call him.

Anna Winn died in 1940, and George remarried in 1945. He and his wife Clara Byall Winn moved from the home ranch to Milton-Freewater in 1946.

Moving to town has not caused George to retire - far from it. Since 1946 he has entered into an intensive irrigation program, drilling a splendid series of wells and becoming as well known for his irrigated strawberries and carrots as he formerly was known for his dry land watermelons. Irrigated pasture and Hereford cattle are seen on the old home place now, and many a retired farmer has marveled at his courage in such an ambitious venture at an age when most men think they are ready to rest.

The years have been kind to George Winn, and his many friends still remember his activities of former years when he used to recite the poems of James Whitcomb Riley at the annual Umatilla County pioneer Reunions. George and Clark Wood, his beloved friend of many years standing, used to participate together in these reunion programs. It was at the birthday party that news of Clark Wood's death was made known, and many a fond memory was told about the days gone by when Anna Compton Will and Clark Wood performed "Asleep in the Deep" which Clark was noted as singing"betther than any basso this side of the Mississippi river" to quote Clark himself.

All the family wished George Winn a very happy birthday with refreshments including two cakes, but not 81 candles!

MRS. ANNA COMPTON WINN

Mrs Anna Compton Winn, 49 years old, wife of George Winn living near Weston and prominently identified with musical activities of the entire district, died Tuesday morning in a Walla Walla hospital where she had been since December 22. Her illnes, however, dated back several years.

Mrs. Winn was born in Canyon County, Idaho on January 22, 1891. She was a member of the class of 1918 at Whitman College, later taught music at Columbia College in Milton before that institution closed, served on the faculty of Whitman conservatory and had participated widely in the musical life of the Inland Empire. She was musical director at McLaughlin High School two years; 1925 to 1927. She belonged to the Methodist church.

Survivors, besides her widower include one daughter, Ellen, and two sons; Peyton and Robert - all of Weston; her father, F.W. Compton in California; four sisters, Sue Armour of Moscow, Jennie Vance of Hazelton, Idaho, Bertha Compton of Baker and Frances Newton of Vancouver, Wash., and three brothers; Henry of Salem, Fred of Hoquiam and Ralph Compton of Portland.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday from the First Presbyterian church in Pendleton. Mrs. J.H. Maxwell sang, "I've Done My Work" by Carrie Jacobs Bond and "Go'n Home" by Anton Dvorak. A quartette sang "Abide With Me". Rev P.D. Hartman assisted by Dr. W.H. Bleakley were in charge of services. Burial was in the Pendleton cemetery.

Virgil Winn, Age 75, Dies

Virgil Winn, 75, of 133 Orchard, died Sunday at a local hospital following a long illiness.

He was born Jan. 25, 1877 in Texas and came to Oregon with his family when he was 6-years-old. He later moved to Waterville, Wash, where he farmed until his retirement six years ago. He then came to Walla Walla to make his home.

He is suvived by his widow, Mrs Grace winn at the home address; three children, Alden Winn of Walla Walla. Mrs Harry (Emily) Reitmeier of Cheney, Wash., and Miss Esther Winn of Walla Walla; three brothers, Jesse Winn of Wasco, Calif., Conrad Winn of Bakersfield, Calif., and Minor Winn of Wenatchee, and three sisters, Mrs. Iona Riggs of Wenatchee, Mrs Mary Elfers of Ronan, Mont., and Mrs. Olive Hines of Sacramento, Calif.

He was a member of the Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge of Waterville.

Former Milton-Freewater resident Peyton R. Winn, 79, of Park Plaza Retirement Residence, died May 31, 2001, at Regency at the Park in College Place.

The funeral service will be 11:a.m. Friday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater. A concluding service and burial will be in Olney Cemetery, Pendleton. Pastor John Stafford of College Place Seventh-day Adventist Village Church and the Rev. David Brauer-Rieke of Christ The King Lutheran Church will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation through the funeral home.

Mr. Winn was born May 28, 1922, at St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, to George W. and Anna Compton Winn. Raised on the farm near Weston, he graduated from McLoughlin Union High School. He attended a year at Oregon State College, belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and was assistant editor of the OSC newspaper.

During World War II he enlisted in the United States Army, undergoing basic training at Camp Roberts in California and served in the Dutch West Indies as a radio operator on the island of Curacao.

He married Jessie Kenoyer July 6, 1943. He and his wife had five children during their 24-year marriage. After receiving his honoable discharge, the couple returned to his family farm to go into farming with his father and his brother Bob. He was always very interested in modern farming methods, and conservation and crop diversification. This thinking was instrumental in the beginning of raising strawberries, a crop for which the farm later became well-known.

He was among the first to employ Japanese Americans returning to the area from internment camps, utilizing their skills at the beginning of the strawberry project.

In 1956, Winn began working for the Federal Government to provide Federal Crop Insurance to area farmers. He was District Supervisor until 1967. Later jobs included serving as custodian at Central School as well as working part-time at Sears after his retirement.

He married Adealia L. Tollefson May 1, 1969. She passed away April 16, 1994.

Winn was involved in many community activities. He was a Post Commander of the Weston VFW chapter, president of the Weston Chamber of Commerce, served on the steering Committee of the Umatilla County Pioneer Reunion and was a member of the Farm Bureau. He was a life long Democrat.

Both musical and church activities were important to him. He had been given vocal training as a youth by his mother and never forgot what she had taught him. He sang in several choirs over the years, and enjoyed singing in a barbershop quartet, which for a while was featured music for a weekly radio program on KWWB. He was a popular soloist in the area and even in his final years sang at weddings, funerals and made weekly rounds singing at retirement centers the old songs he knew so well. He passed his love for music down to his children, teaching them to sing in harmony from an early age. When it came to church participation he had experience in several denominational traditions. Raised a Methodist, he later attended the First Baptist Church of Athena, while raising his family.

After moving to Milton-Freewater, he became a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church where he served as Treasurer for many years. In the last two months of his life he became a member of the College Place Seventh-day Adventist Village Church. He was an avid Bible student throughout his life, and also passed this on to his children

In the later years, he taught "55 Alive" classes and enjoyed breakfasting with "The Over the Hill Gang". He was pleased to be a recipient of the Golden Pioneer Award as well. A crowning achievement of his last year of life was the organizing of the first Winn Family reunion in June of 2000. Winn descendents came to M-F from far and near to learn family history, share old mementos, and meet each other, many for the first time. This was a fulfillment of a long held dream that grew from his years of genealogical work.

Survivors include his four daughters; Karen Pierpoint and Robin Green of Moreno Valley, CA, Christine Cowgill of Honolulu, Hawaii and Barbara Klett of Bend, OR; son Douglas Winn of Seattle, WA; brother Robert Winn of Weston, OR; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren .
