Grandfather's mother, Harriet Persey, was pampered by everyone including the slaves. It is told that one day she might cut out as many as fifteen hickory shirts, and then for the next six weeks she would have her maid dress her and comb her hair.
Her older children were all well educated. Grandfather was the youngest and was spoiled and attended school only as he pleased. His oldest brother, Dr. Harvey Wellman, was sent to fight yellow fever in Panama. His daughter was the first white child born in Panama. She married R. Beebe who was a wealthy tobacco raiser. His son Nance manufactured stoves. He visited the Wellmans in Walla Walla at one time. After Beebe's death, Jimmy Nick took over the Beebe farm and became a very wealthy tobacco dealer although he never used tobacco.
On one visit home Dr. Harvey Wellman objected to the way his brother Alfred was being raised and made arrangements for him to enter a preparatory school and then go to college. But when he went back to Panama to settle his business preparatory to taking over the management of his father's farm, he died there of yellow fever.
Although the Wellman family owned many slaves, they were really Northern sympathizers. The father died in 1862 and in 1863 our grandfather decided to bring his family west. He now had a wife and three children. He sold his heritage for $1500 and with it bought his outfit and oxen. They left Hannibal MO in April and arrived in Walla Walla in Oct. When they camped at Tollgate, a snowstorm scattered the oxen and grandfather is said to have walked to Ft. Walla Walla for help.

3. ALFRED CRAIG3 WELLMAN (HARVEY2, LOT1) was born 03 Nov 1834 in Alabama, and died 20 Jan 1916 in Walla Walla, Walla Walla, WA. He married HELEN MERRITT 02 Apr 1855 in Ralls, Missouri1, daughter of HEZEKIAH MERRITT and CAROLINE DES MUKES. She was born 21 Oct 1836 in Missouri, and died 23 Apr 1916 in Walla Walla, Walla Walla, WA.
Notes for ALFRED CRAIG WELLMAN:
An illustrated history of Walla Walla County, state of Washington, By Professor W. D. Lyman, W.H. Lever, Publisher, 1901, Pg 444a-445
ALFRED C. WELLMAN, a farmer near Clyde, is a native of Alabama, born November 3, 1835. When a year old he was taken by his parents to Missouri, where his father became an extensive farmer and merchant. Mr. Wellman attended public schools until he acquired a good general education, then in 1855 took charge of his father’s eleven-hundred-acre farm. In 1862 the father died. The next year the family started across the plains with ox-teams to Walla Walla county, where, shortly after his arrival, Mr. Wellman took a pre-emption on Dry creek. He also engaged in mining in Idaho, and succeeded in locating some very rich claims.
In 1871 Mr. Wellman was elected county assessor of Walla Walla county, and at the expiration of his term he became deputy sheriff, serving for two years. He then made a trip east in the interest of a patent calculator, one of his own invention. On his return he went to Silver City, Idaho, where he mined until 1876. He then located a timber culture on Eureka flat, and became one of the pioneer agriculturists of that section. He now owns and farms six hundred and forty acres on Eureka flat, raising wheat.
He is an energetic and progressive man, highly esteemed in his community, and respected as one who may be relied upon to do as he agrees at all times. He was married in April, 1855, to Miss Helen M. Merritt, a native of Missouri, and to them have been born seven children, Charles V., Alice C., Richard H., Percy L., Mary J., Mark A. and Al C. In fraternal affiliations Mr. Wellman is identified with the Elks. Mrs. Wellman is a member of the Christian church, having joined the society of that faith in New London, Missouri, in 1855.

Helen Merritt Grandmother Wellman
Grandmother's parents moved from New York to Alabama when she was two years old. Her mother died when she was seven and she was raised in the Sacred Heart Convent in St Louis where she was taught all the graces of a lady of that day. When she was seventeen she gave an address at a Temperance meeting and was presented with a bible. Grandfather Wellman was in the audience, and although he was engaged to another girl at the time, he decided that she was the girl he wanted for his wife. She graduated that year and they were married two years later.
She and grandfather lived with his parents on an 1100 acre farm for eight years. He helped manage the farm. Four children where born to them at this time. One daughter Adelia, died in infancy. Grandmother had negro slaves to wait on her and care for the children. She did her first cooking over a camp fire on her way west.
Grandmother made all her children's clothes by hand. The boy's shirts were made of flour sacks, but had a linen collar cuffs, and front piece. Grandmother said that many a time the eastern sky would be rosy when she put down her needle.
The grain waving in the wind when it was green was one of her found memories which she carried during the hot dry summer on Eureka Flat. Water was scarce and had to be brought by train in tank cars on Sunday or else hauled several miles in a tank wagon from Smith Springs. No one was allowed to take more water in the dipper than he could drink and the water we washed our hands with must be saved for the chickens to drink. Grandmother had a special punishment for one who broke a dish. It must be pounded between two stones into very small pieces to furnish grit for the chickens.

Many in attendance at services Monday for M.A. Wellman
Mark A. Wellman, pioneer citizen of Lewis and Clark county, former member of the Montana legislative assembly, creator of the Sun River Game preserve, and a highly honored and respected resident of Augusta for half a century was laid to rest Monday afternoon in the Augusta cemetery. Mr. Wellman passed away January 24 at the Deaconess hospital in Great Falls, following an operation four days previously.
The funeral, which was largely attended, was held under the auspices of Augusta lodge, A.F. and A. M., of which Mr. Wellman was a past master, secretary for 24 years and a member 34 years. Services were conducted by Past Grand Master J. M. Charteris of Great Falls and Rev. Lee H. Young also of Great Falls, with hymns by the church choir. Pallbearers were J. H. Carmichael, Bruce Neil, Ed Boone, Henry Zimmer, Weston Howard and Fred Swanson.
Stockman and Merchant
Mr. Wellman was born in Walla Walla, Washington, in 1871 and came to Montana 50 years ago. He located at Augusta and engaged in the lovestock business with his brother under the firm name of Wellman Brothers. The firm continued until 1892 when his brother retired and Mr. Wellman continued the business 10 years alone. In 1902 he started the mercantile business of Beach and Wellman in Augusta, which continued until 1917. Thereafter he engaged in farming and also conducted the Augusta Meat Market. He served as deputy county assessor for a number of years.
Mr. Wellman served two terms in teh Montana legislature and while a member of the house introduced and sponsored a bill creating the Sun River Game preserve which embraces a large area in northern Lewis and Clark county. He was also largely instrumental in passing, in a later session, a bill which brought about extension of the Great Northern railway line to Augusta.
Mr. Wellman accompanied a delegation of Augusta citizens to Helena and appered before the committee on railroads and transportation in behalf of the bill which mae it possible to extend this line two miles from Gilman to Augusta. it was largely by reason of Mr.Wellman's forceful address before the committee that the bill was reported favorably by the committee, passed both houses, was signed by the governor and became a law. He was alwayus active in civic affairs and assisted in every movement that he felt to be for the benefit of his community and state.
Mr. Wellman is survived by his widow, Ethel White Wellman; three sons, Bingham and Percy of Augussta and Homer of Glendale, Calif.; and three daughters, Mrs. Alma Carmichael of Augusta, Mrs naida Fry of Enis and Miss Helen Wellman, who is teaching and taking research work at Iowa. Helen Merritt Langley was born on Sept. 30, 1913, at Deer Lodge, Mont. Her parents, Hugh and Helen Holbrook Sheehy, moved in 1917 to Durkee, where they managed a ranch on Swayze Creek. Helen attended elementary school at Plano and then graduated from St. Francis Academy at Baker City.
Her grandmother Holbrook offered to pay her tuition to attend Eastern Oregon Normal School in La Grande, where Helen became one of the first graduates in 1933.
Harland Eugene Langley and Helen were married at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral on July 23, 1936. They raised their family of six children on a ranch at the mouth of Dixie Creek near Lime. After the ranch sold in 1995, Helen lived at Huntington and Baker City for a few years. Her last two years were spent at Independence under the care of her granddaughter, Michelle Hedrick, and her family.
Mrs. Langley taught elementary school at Lookout and Huntington for many years, and after retiring enjoyed membership in the Blue Mountain Fiddlers Association. She was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and was a wonderful hostess to all who graced her door.
She entertained the hobo, the traveling stranger, priest, neighbor, or family member with equal love and acceptance. She had a great love for raising flowers and vegetable gardens.
Children were her joy and she entertained them at every opportunity with stories, games, and tea parties. In her later years, she authored a book on the Sheehy family history called "From Erin to Oregon."

Notes for FRANK GILBERT JR. LAMB:
The Lamb Weston Company was begun in 1932 by Frank G. Lamb who was
succeeded by his son Gib Lamb. In 1950 Gib Lamb purchased a defunct
co-op plant in Weston, Oregon, and renovated it to make it the most
advanced pea processing facility in the United States. In 1960 he
invented and patented the Lamb Water Gun Knife to process potatoes
into french fries.

The Lamb-Weston firm has headquarters in Los Angeles, in Hawaii, and
in Idaho. It was purchased by ConAgra in 1986.

Weston (a subsidiary of Con Agra)is the leading producer of french
fries in the United States, followed by McCain (a Canadian company
which purchased Ore-Ida in 1997) and the J.R. Simplot Company. These
three supply about 80% of all frozen french fries, particularly those
to fast food outlets (frozen fries sell for $0.30/pound and are sold,
after reheating in oil, to customers at $6.00/pound; needless to say,
the producing farmer does not share in this profit margin, with about
$0.08 of that $6.00 going to the producer).
Lamb Weston was founded in 1950 by F. Gilbert Lamb, inventor of
the Lamb Water Gun Knife. The first Water Gun Knife shot potatoes
out of a fire hose. The commercial version uses a high-pressure hose
to propel potatoes at a speed of 117 feet per second through a grid
of sharp steel blades to produce perfect french fries.

The Lamb's sold their business in 1971 and created the Lamb
Foundation. The family moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, at this time
