EARLY SETTLERS OF SANGAMON COUNTY - 1876

By John Carroll Power

These biographies were submitted by a researcher and evidently abstracted from the 1876 History of Sangamon County, IL. Errors could occur, so one should always verify the correctness by obtaining copies of vitals and performing all necessary research to document what is contained herein.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MCCOY, DAVID, was born in 1790, in the State of Georgia. His parents moved to Tennessee, and both died there when he was quite young. He went with a married sister to Ohio, and from there to Montgomery county, Ill. Mary Kilpatrick was born March 29, 1800, in Fayette county, Ky. In 1817 her parents moved to Montgomery county, Ill. David McCoy and Mary Kilpatrick were there married in the fall of 1818, and moved to the south side of Richland creek, in what became Gardner township, Sangamon county, arriving in the spring of 1819. They came in company with her brother, Wm. Kilpatrick, and his wife, both couple having just been married. They lived there one year before they had any knowledge of another family coming into that region of country. His improvements were on a piece of school land, which was not for sale when the other land came into market. In the fall of 1823 Mr. McCoy moved five miles south, to the north side of Spring creek, in what is now Cartwright township. They had three children on Richland creek and eight on Spring creek; two of the latter died in infancy. Of their nine children--

OWEN F., born Feb., 1820, went to California in 1849, and died there in 1856.

HUGH, born March, 1821, died unmarried, March, 1848, in Sangamon county.

POLLY A., born April 8, 1823, on Richland creek, married in Sangamon county, Oct. 29, 1844, to Elihu Scott, who was born August 18, 1821, in Tennessee. They had six children; one died in infancy. MARY E., born July 30, 1845, married April 16, 1868, to C. Howard Sowle, who was born Jan. 8, 1839, near Rochester, N. Y. They have two children, JOSEPHINE and CHARLEY, and reside one mile northeast of Richland station, Sangamon county, Ill. MARTHA J. lives with her mother. JOHN B. resides at Kansas City, Mo, OWEN M. and ELIHU, Jun., live with their mother. Elihu Scott died May 21, 1869, in Sangamon county, and his widow resides one mile northeast of Richland Station, Sangamon county, Illinois.--1876.

NANCY, born Feb. 1, 1825, on Spring creek, married Feb. 9, 1843, to Robert Bone. They have a family of children, and live in Menard county, five miles north of Richland station.

THOMAS K., born in 1827, in Sangamon county, married in 1848, to Margaret A. Kendall, have five living children, and live in Umatilla county, Oregon, near Walla Walla, Washington Territory.

WILLIAM K., born April, 1829, in Sangamon county, is unmarried, and resides at Bancroft, Daviess county, Mo.

JAMES P., born July 3, 1832, in Sangamon county, married Jane L. Seeley, had eight children, five of whom are living with their parents in Topeka, Kansas.--1874.

RACHEL, born in Sangamon county, married Rev. John C. VanPatten. See his name.

JOSEPH G., born Dec., 1838, in Sangamon county, married Sarah Epler, had five children; two died in infancy. The three living reside with tneir parents in Kansas City, Mo.--1874.

Mrs. Mary McCoy died Jan 20, 1848, and David McCoy died Jan 22, 1868, both in Sangamon county.

David McCoy had some experience in breaking prairie before he came to Sangamon county. He was one of the few early settlers who never cleared the timber from his land, but made his farm in the prairie. He brought a plow with him suitable for breaking prairie. He hung it under the axle of his wagon, and thought he could drive the oxen and hold the plow himself, but found that he could not. His wife volunteered to drive while he held the plow, but then another difficulty arose. The baby could not be left alone long at a time. In that dilemma Mr. McCoy made a box similar to a cradle, made it fast on the beam of the plow, put the babe into it, and in that way broke his land. He built a saw mill on Spring creek, about 1825 or '26, and added grinding machinery soon after When that mill was put in operation, there was great joy in the settlement, as it was the only place where grinding could be obtained. He adopted as a rule that a grist belonging to a widow should never be tolled. He would loan money without interest for the purpose of entering land. Mr. McCoy went annually to St. Louis, with strained honey and deer-skins, and exchanged them for groceries and other necessaries for the family. His daughter, Mrs. Scott, remembers when the first shoes were made for the children. The eldest one was seven years old.

Robert Smith & Nancy McCoy Bone

(11 Feb 1816 - 17 Jan 1888/98) (1 Feb 1825 - 9 Aug 1895)

Robert S. Bone, oldest son of Elihu Bone, was born in Tennessee in 1816, and came with his parents to Illinois in 1824. The trip was made in a covered wagon, and he walked much of the way and drove the cows.

He married Nancy McCoy, of Sangamon County, daughter of David and Mary McCoy.

Robert Bone was a ruling elder from 1856 until his death in 1888. He was a man of staid character and his counsel and advice were sought and followed by men in both church and community circles.

He was much interested in education and gave liberally of his means for the schooling of his children.

His wife was an energetic, progressive woman, very strict in her attendance at church, and never absent except on account of sickness. The members of her family were taught to reverence the House of God and its services.

Of their five children who lived to a mature age, one son, David, was elected to the office of ruling elder at Petersburg, Ill., and another, Frank, to the same office at Ft. Scott Kans.; the youngest son, Robert Edgar Bone, has been a ruling elder in the rock Creek Church thirty years. Another son, Finis E. Bone, served the home church faithfully as deacon many years. The daughter, Mary Ellen, is mentioned elsewhere.

Mrs. Elihu Bone, Mrs. Robert Bone and Mrs. Jacob Schnapp prepared the communion elements for ninety years. In a very early day these were served on a long table around which the communicants gathered. Later they were served in the pew from a plate and cup. At the present day an individual communion set, the gift of Mrs. Henry Colby, is used.

Final Settlement of Umatilla County, Oregon

The Indian war lasted two years, and at its close a few Americans came back, nearly all of them going to Walla Walla, where a military post was established. Green Arnold returned to the Umatilla, and settled at the mouth of Birch creek, a few miles below Pendleton, in 1857. Whitney also returned, and settled on a claim adjoining Arnold. He had selected the location before his hasty departure two years before. John R. Courtney and a brother settled in the meadows below the old agency and were followed by half a dozen others. A sporting man named Crabb located a mile and one-half below Pendleton, where the road from the Dalles to Walla Walla crosses Umatilla River. Here he opened a saloon for refreshment of travelers. He soon disposed of the business to Alfred Marshall, who lived there for years, the place being known as Marshall's Station. It was dignified by being the first county seat, was for a short time called Middleton, and is now generally known as Swift's: In 1858 Thomas K. McCoy settled on the Tumalum three miles from Milton, where his family has resided since 1859, and Tom Ireland opened a hotel for travelers in 1859 where Dalles road crosses the Walla Walla, near Milton, now known as Cole's crossing. This place was occupied in 1860 by Elijah Bunton, father of the notorious Bill Bunton. In the spring of 1860 Ulysses Jarred settled with his family on the river five miles above Milton, and in July S. P. Whitley and family located three miles below him. These two gentlemen are now residents of Milton. A few other locations were made in 1859, and 1860 by Americans, the majority of whom were not men of family and did not become permanent residents. Add to these a few Hudson's Bay French and half breeds, living with their Indian wives, and we have all the residents of the county in 1860.

Early History of the Milton-Freewater Area

Milton-Freewater, Oregon

Page 3 – THE McCOY FAMILY

The McCoy family was among the earliest settlers who had a part in the development of the Valley. Some of their descendants still own and occupy a part of the original family holdings.

Thomas McCoy, leading a string of pack animals, brought his possessions from California gold fields in September 1856 and built a log cabin on land he selected. The land was patented in 1864, under the land-grant law of 1820. Title to the tract was the first deed to be recorded in Umatilla County.

Some time after Thomas became settled he was joined by his family, who had remained in Ohio while Tom sought fortune in the West. The search was successful to a degree as Tom set up business in the Walla Walla Valley with $40,000 or $50,000 in gold. It is recorded he shipped the gold from California by Wells Fargo Express. With part of it, the family, in 1876, built a two story, seven-gable house on the present Ben Johnson property.

It is a matter of record that the first litigation in Oregon over irrigation water rights, was between Thomas McCoy and Ninevah Ford. The case was tried in Oregon City. The court decree is known as the McCarthy decree and divided the water of the Walla Walla and the Little Walla Walla equally between them.

The McCoy’s traded extensively with the Indians, let them camp on their property. There was never trouble between them. E. O. "Dutch" McCoy prospered by shipping wheat by rail and barge to The Dalles, acquired property elsewhere, and moved away. Mark McCoy lives on part of the old place.

Thomas McCoy was one of Umatilla County’s Board of Commissioners when Umatilla was the county seat. Ninevah Ford was one of a committee of three appointed to select a site for a new county seat to be between the mouth of Wildhorse Creek and McKay Creek, which later became Pendleton.

Marriage: 27 Dec 1853, Sangamon, IL29

Children of RACHEL MCCOY and JOHN VANPATTEN are:

i. EDWIN HUGH3 VANPATTEN, b. 08 Mar 1855, Sangamon,IL; d. 25 Nov 1942, Columbia,WA30; m. (1) HELEN E ?; b. Abt. 1856, Oregon; m. (2) JULIA H SATTERWHITE, 26 Jun 1884, 1884 in Bismarck, Vermilion, IL; b. Jul 1857, Louisville, KY; d. 11 Apr 1920, Dayton, Columbia, WA.

Notes for EDWIN HUGH VANPATTEN:

* Dr. Edwin Hugh VAN PATTEN, a distinguished member of the medical profession at Dayton, was born March 8, 1855, near Springfield, Illinois, and traces his ancestry back to the year 1641, when Charles Frederick VAN PATTEN was born. He came to New Amsterdam, now New York, in 1664 and from that ancestor the line comes down unbroken to Dr. VAN PATTEN of this review. His parents were John COOP and Rachel (McCOY) VAN PATTEN. The father was born in New Jersey, January 22, 1832, and acquired a public school education in Springfield, Illinois, accompanying his parents on their removal to that state during his early youth. He studied for the ministry of the Cumberland Presbyterian church and remained one of its well known pastors until the union of the Cumberland Presbyterian with the Presbyterian church, when he returned to the church of his youth. For a number of years he was general agent for the Lincoln University at Lincoln, Illinois, and he became pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian church of Lincoln at the time when he accepted the agency, there remaining for five years. On leaving Illinois he removed to eastern Washington in 1880, settling in Dayton, where he had purchased land and where he engaged in preaching the gospel for many years. He was also prominent in the public life of the community and was chosen to represent his district in the state senate, which position he was filling at the same time Governor RODGER was elected. He died in the latter part of August, 1912, when in the Eighty-first year of his age.

Dr. Edwin Hugh VAN PATTEN, reared in Lincoln, there acquired his early education as a public school students and afterward attended the Lincoln University , which conferred upon him the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy in 1879 and that of Master of Philosophy in the spring of 1883, the latter coming to him from his alma mater as a well earned honor. In 1880, then a young man of twenty-five years, he accompanied his parents on their removal westward to Oregon and took up his abode upon a claim in Sherman county. It was his desire, however, to enter upon a professional career. He had previously engaged in teaching school in Illinois but regarded this merely as an intial step to other professional labor and in 1881 he returned to his native state to become a student in Rush Medical College in Chicago, from which he was graduated in February, 1883, with valedictorian honors as a member of a class of two hundred. He then returned to the northwest and located for practice in Dayton, where he has remained for thirty-four years, occupying one office through practically the entire period. Actuated at all times by a most progressive spirit, he has kept abreast with the latest thought, researches and discoveries of the science of medicine, has one of the best equipped offices in the northwest and one of the most complete medical libraries. In 1888 he went to New York, where he pursued an extended post-graduate course, specializing in the study of diseases of the eye and ear. It was Dr. VAN PATTEN who performed the first successful laparotomy operation and the first successful hysterectomy operation in Columbia county. He has done much difficult surgical work which has given evidence of his remarkable skill and high achievements in this branch of the profession and he is regarded as the peer of the ablest physicians and surgeons on the Pacific coast. He is likewise a member of the Edwards-Hindle Company of Dayton and is a landowner of Columbia county, Washington and of Sherman county, Oregon.

On the 25th of June, 1884, in Bismarck,Illinois, Dr. VAN PATTEN was united in marriage to Miss Julia SATTERWHITE, of Louisville, Kentucky, who had been a schoolmate of the Doctor in Lincoln. She is a daughter of Parker SATTERWHITE and was graduated from the Lincoln schools in June, 1881, and taught school for some years prior to her marriage. She afterward became grand correspondent for the Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star, which position she occupied for a number of years or until her health caused her to resign.

Dr. VAN PATTEN gives his political allegiance to the democratic party and in 1889 was candidate on its ticked for the office of state senator and again in 1905. On both occasions he was defeated by a small majority in a strongly republican district, although he ran far ahead of the regular party vot. He served for six years as a member of the school board of Dayton and soon after his arrival in Columbia county, was elected county coronor, which position he occupied for many years. In Masonic circles Dr. VAN PATTEN occupies a very prominent position. He is a past grand master of the grand lodge of Masons, having served during 1904 and 1905. He was grand patron of the Order of the Eastern Star in 1892 and 1893 and is now right eminent grand commander of the Knights Templar. He is also the grand king of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons for the state and he is a member of the Oriental Consistory of Spokane, in Scottish Rite Masonry. He is likewise an elder of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, which indicates that his obligations for the religous development of the community are not neglected. In fact he is an active and helpful church worker and does everythings in his power to extend the influence and promote the growth of the organization. He belongs to the Walla Walla Valley Medical Society and he went abroad for study in surgery in Europe. He has never ceased to be a close student of his profession and yet his reading has been by no means confined to medical and surgical lines but has reached out into the broad realms of thought. While in Europe he was several times requested to address the Travelers Club and the Camera Club, organizations of prominent people from all parts of the world. He is a gifted speaker and is frequently called upon to address various gatherings. Moreover, he is an unusually entertaining conversationalist, which makes him very popular in social circles. In a work, association with Dr. VAN PATTEN means expansion and elevation.

9. MARY ELLEN3 BONE (NANCY2 MCCOY, DAVID1) was born 14 Mar 1848 in Menard, IL, and died 30 May 1915. She married HENRY HERRICK COLBY 09 Sep 1869 in Menard, IL36. He was born 15 Apr 1845 in Menard, IL, and died 22 Dec 1926.

Notes for MARY ELLEN BONE:

MARY ELLEN BONE COLBY (14 Mar 1848 - 30 May 1915), wife of Henry H. Colby and daughter of Robert S. and Nancy Bone, was born March 14, 1948, almost within the shadow of the church she so loved, and in the work of which she was so deeply interested, being a devoted, consecrated Superintendent of the Primary Department of the Sabbath School forty-five years. Many of the older people in the present congregation, and most of the younger ones, received their earliest Sabbath School instruction from her. She was progressive and made use of the best methods in teaching and holding the attention of her pupils.

No child ever had a more loving friend or a more earnest teacher; nothing seemed too much trouble for her to do for the enjoyment or benefit of the children, and to the last days of her life she was planning for her class.

Sympathetic by nature, her heart went out to any one in need of help, and many can testify that her hand obeyed the impulse of her heart in rendering prompt and substantial assistance. She was a great lover of flowers and her gifts of blossoms and plants brought cheer to many a sick room.

Four little orphans were taken into her home and cared for as tenderly as her own children. Two of these died in infancy; of the other two one is now a trained nurse, and one a young farmer.

She lived to serve; and in service to others she found her greatest happiness.

HENRY HERRICK COLBY

(15 Apr 1845 - 22 Dec 1926)

Henry Herrick Colby, son of Jonathan and Lydia Colby, was born in 1845, about four miles northwest of the church. His father was a native of New Hampshire, and his mother of Connecticut.

Mr. Colby was married to Mary Ellen Bone, daughter of Robert and Nancy Bone, in 1869. To them were born three children, only one of whom, Mrs. Nellie Cherry, wife of Rev. John T. Cherry, is now living.

A man of industrious habits and excellent business qualifications, Mr. Colby has been rewarded by success in his vocation, that of farming. Of a retentive memory, his fund of useful information on many subjects has been a store house from which he could draw when occasion demanded.

He is quick of decision, and his opinions are valued by his neighbors. He is an interested student of State and National affairs, and seldom fails to express his sentiments at the polls.

A regular attendant at Sabbath School and church, and well versed in the Scriptures, for many years he has been teacher of the Men’s Bible Class.

12. JOSEPH H3 MCCOY (THOMAS K2, DAVID1) was born 15 Jan 1856 in Oregon, and died Abt. 1910. He married MARY A COWL 25 Oct 1882 in Umatilla, Oregon49, daughter of WILLIAM COWL and KATHERINE BROWN. She was born 11 Jul 1862 in Illinois, and died 29 Jan 1946 in Lewis,WA50.

Notes for JOSEPH H MCCOY:

An illustrated history of Walla Walla County, state of Washington Pg 401-402

Joseph H McCoy, a farmer on the Tumalum, eight and a half miles southwest of Walla Walla, a pioneer of the valley of 1859, was born in Linn county, Oregon on January 15, 1856. When a small child he was brought by his parents to this valley7, and he now resides on the place which his father homesteaded on coming here. He received his education in Mr and Mrs Chamberlain's private school, and in the old Whitman Academy, which he attended two years.

His first business after leaving school was raising Norman Percheron horses in Umatilla county and later in Wasco county, Oregon, in company with his brothers, E.O. and John D., a line of activity which he followed until 1884. He sold out, returned to the paternal homestead and took charge of the farm. While thus employed he received an appointment from Mr Zoeth Houser as chief deputy sheriff of Umatilla county, Oregon, and for two years thereafter he was engaged in the performance of his duties as such officer.

Returning then to his farming, he devoted the summer and fall seasons to that industry, but as soon as harvest time was passed he indulged his passion for travel, visiting every state and territory in the Union except those along the Atlantic seaboard. latterly he has given his entire time and attention to his farm, and is now one of the most successful diversified farmers in the valley. He enjoys an enviable standing in his community, the natural consequence of his uniform fairness and integrity in his dealings with his neighbors. His fraternal connections are with the Damon Lodge, No 4, Knights of Pythias, of Pendleton, and with Lodge No 23, F.O.E., of Walla Walla.

Mr McCoy was married, at Cowl's Crossing, of the Walla Walla River, October 26, 1882, to Miss Mary A. Cowl, a native of Illinois, who was brought by her parents across the plains in 1866. They have a family of four children, Joseph O., Kate M., and George T. and Mattie A., twins. Mr McCoy's father was a prominent man in the early pioneer days of this valley. He has the distinction of having started and for a time operated the first meat market ever established in this section, and one surprising thing in this connection is that the market has been maintained continuously as such ever since, though started in 1858. It is now the property of Mr Chris Ennis.

When the family first settled on the farm here they were neighbors to the Cayuse Indians, but by uniform fair treatment they kept the good will of the red men and experienced no trouble with them. On one occasion an Indian stole a horse from Mr McCoy, but the other Indians followed the thief to Idaho, overtook him, beat him unmercifully and compelled him to bring back the stolen property.

Mr McCoy tells many amusing anecdotes of the false Indian scares of early days, one of which is to the effect that a neighbor, while on a mad drive to Fort Walla Walla to alarm the soldiers, lost one of his children out of the wagon, and when the others set up a cry of alarm his imagination construed the turmoil to be the shouts of approaching red skins and he drove all the harder. Mr. McCoy's father died in Menard county, Illinois, February 19, 1877, while back there on a visit, and his mother passed away in October 1896, and lies buried in the Walla Walla cemetery. While Mr. McCoy's farm is just over the Oregon line, he considers Walla Walla his home town and always has his mail directed to that post office.

14. JOHN D3 MCCOY (THOMAS K2, DAVID1) was born 09 Oct 1860 in Oregon, and died Bef. 1930. He married ROSE D. OLMSTEAD 18 Jul 1883 in Umatilla, Oregon56. She was born Aug 1866 in Oregon, and died 09 May 1940 in Umatilla, OR57.

Notes for JOHN D MCCOY:

An illustrated history of Walla Walla County, state of Washington Pg 395

John D McCoy, son of Thomas K. and Margaret A., was born in Umatilla county, Oregon, on October 9, 1860, on his father's homestead on the Tumalum river, He grew to man's estate in the valley, receiving the advantage of a thorough education in Mrs. Chamberlain's private school and in Whitman Seminary. after leaving school he engaged in stock raising in Wasco county, Oregon, near The Dalles, and he followed that industry there for six or eight years, afterwards moving his stock to the Snake river, where opportunity was afforded for taking homestead land, and where there was abundance of range for cattle.

Mr McCoy took a quarter-section of government land, and remained on it continuously until May 24, 1900, when he sold his place and stock and moved permanently to his present residence on the Telephone road, where is the portion of his father's estate that fell to him. He also has one hundred and sixty acres of land on the Tumalum river, a part of the paternal homestead, and upon these two places he is raising hay principally. It is his intention to work into the dairy business, and he already has quite a herd of milch cows, all fine Jersey stock.

Mr McCoy is uniformly esteemed and respected wherever known, his standing in this community being an enviable one. For three years he has been school director of his district. In Umatilla county, on July 18, 1882, he married Miss Rose D. Olmstead, a native of Oregon, and they have four children living, namely: Rowena A., G. Pauline, J. Leon and Marcus R., all at home. Mrs McCoy's parents were early seettlers on the Tamalum river, and were well known and respected in Walla Walla, where her mother still lives and owns property, though her father died on the old home place in March, 1877.
