JACOB P. HASTINGS DIES AT AGE OF EIGHTY-THREE
WAS PIONEER MINISTER OF WALLA VALLEY, HAVING SETTLED NEAR VALLEY CHAPELIN 1862
Having reached the ripe old age of 83 years, Rev. Jacob P. Hastings, another of the early pioneers of the Walla Walla valley and one of the first men to preach in this part of the northeast, passed to his eternal rest at the home of his daughter, Mrs Rebecca Arthur, in Starbuck,Washington on last Tuesday. No lingering illness marked the last days of this pioneer, for death by senile decay came as a sweet relief from the cares of a life full of self sacrifice and devotion to the cause of doing good for others.
For more than half a century the deceased was a minister in the Christian church, and although never occurring the Milton church as a regular appointee, he frequently spoke in this city, where he was always greeted by a large audience of sympathetic and interested hearers.
The Rev. Hastings was born in Lancaster county, PA February 1826,where he spent the first few years of his life. When a young man he moved with his parents to Ohio, but after a few years residence in the state the family again moved, this time to Iowa. Here both the parents died and are buried, while their son was yet a mere youth.
When 25 years old Mr. Hastings was married to Martha N. Graham, the couple moving shortly after their union from Iowa to Missouri. Here they lived until the year 1862 when they moved to the Walla Walla valley and settled near Valley Chapel, near the state line. On the trip across the plains they encountered the usual hardships and difficulties which so inevitably followed the steps of the early pioneer.
After residing at Valley Chapel for 10 years, during which time Rev.Hastings often preached to the few settlers who then resided in this vicinity, the family moved to Garfield county, Washington, where the head of the family homestead a piece of government land. In the year 1890 the Hastings family came to Milton and settled on the property in South Milton which now bears his name. In 1900 Mrs. Hastings died and was buried in the city cemetery overlooking the city.
To Mr. and Mrs. Hastings were born 12 children, all of whom, with the exception of four who died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs W.W.Morse, who died in 1894, are now living. They are Enoch G. Hastings of Central Ferry, WA; Ephraim D. Hastings of Milton; and Mrs. A. Mores, of Milton; Mrs. Martha Hudson, also of Milton; Mrs. Emma Hudson, of Enterprise; Mrs. Artie Wilson, of Enterprise; and Mrs. Rebecca Arthur, of Starbuck, WA. Beside these there are 39 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
The remains were brought to Milton Thursday afternoon, funeral services being held at the Christian church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Elder C.H. Hilton, officiating. Interment took place in the family plot in the city cemetery, where the deceased was laid to rest by the side of his wife.

From: "Pioneer Days at Pomeroy, Washington" by Martha Lynch Scoggin.
THE IMMIGRATION OF THE JACOB HASTINGS FAMILY
FROM IOWA TO WASHINGTON, SPRING OF 1862
AS TOLD BY HIS GRANDDAUGHTER, ELLA LONG
Jacob Hastings and his wife, Martha Graham Hastings, who was sister to Dick Graham, immigrated from Iowa to the State of Washington. They started in March 1862, with their ox teams and covered wagons. It was a big train of covered wagons, which accompanied them on this long journey west. They encountered the ordinary hardships of the early pioneers as they traveled west. There were two or three deaths, which occurred in the wagon train while they were on their journey. Two were children and one the driver of a wagon, who became excited after the Indians withdrew from attacking the men, and ran out on a hillside from the wagons to watch. He was shot by the Indians. The bodies were buried by the roadside and camouflaged so they would not be noticed by the Indians, and they had to drive off and leave their dead and journey on.
They crossed the Platte River at flood stage. It is said that some of the pioneers felled trees, limbed them and sawed them the length of their wagons then chained them to the sides of their wagons and floated across, with the oxen swimming across.
WHEN FIRST ATTACKED BY THE INDIANS
They were in the state of Utah when the Indians tried to drive their cattle off. It was believed they were afraid to attack the train because it was too large and manned too well.
Mrs. Ella Hastings, Long's mother, Alice Morris Hastings, told how the women and children were gathered in the wagons and they took their sacks of flour and placed them between them and the sides of the wagons. When they were being attacked by the Indians, their flour sacks served as a barricade.
Ella Long told how her grandfather, Jacob Hastings' wagon train had just passed a few miles back, where a wagon train had been attacked by the Indians. The occupants had been murdered and left lying about and the wagons were burned. It had been but a short while before, for the ashes were still hot.
After they had passed this tragedy, the Indians attacked and tried to drive their cattle away and the driver was shot leaving the train to watch. Presumably they buried the dead that were left after the massacre of the ill fated immigrant train.
THE JACOB HASTINGS FAMILY
The Hastings family crossed at the head of the Snake River, as they were coming across to Washington Territory. Jacob Hastings and his wife, Martha had twelve children in all; two boys: Ephraim and Enoch. Ephraim became blind at the age of four from brain fever. Enoch helped him and taught him what he could and he became an excellent musician and music teacher. The children's names are as follows (in addition to Ephraim and Enoch): Nancy, Artie, Amanda, Rebecca, Kate, Emma and Judy. Three children had died before the journey west.
Enoch Graham Hastings was twelve years old when he came west with his parents, the Jacob Hastings family. Alice Morris, who later became his wife, was only five years old when she came with her parents, the Nelson Morris Family, in this big wagon train to Washington. Her father was an uncle of Delbert Morris's father, Frank Morris.
THE WAGON TRAIN
This train of wagons came through to Walla Walla and there part of them went to Oregon. The Jacob Hastings and Nelson families settled around Walla Walla. Jacob Hastings was a circuit rider for the Christian Church for years.
Some of the children were married when he left Walla Walla and moved upon the Pataha Flat, on the Shepherd place.
THE MARRIAGE
After Enoch Hastings and Alice Morris were married, they homestead what has been called the old Dick Graham place on the Pataha Flat. Enoch Hastings sold this place to Dick Graham and Graham sold it to Jim and Marietta McCanse Warren. It is now owned by Billy McCanse.
Enoch and Alice Morris Hastings had six children. The first were twins, born in 1872. Their names were Alfred and Allen. The four children born afterward were: Bill (1874), Essie (1876), John (1878),Ella (1884).
All of the children were born on the Pataha Flat, except Ella. She was born after they moved on the home place on the Snake River, above Central Ferry. After Enoch and Alice Hastings homestead on the Pataha Flat, they built a large log house, five rooms downstairs and two upstairs, over the front room and adjoining bedroom. A dining room and bedroom joined the front room to the west and the kitchen joined the dining room, also. There were porches off from the dining room and kitchen. A large porch extended the full length of the front room and the south bedroom. Whether there was an ordinary log house built at first and the other parts added on to it, we do not know, but before the new road was built up and around to Columbia Center, it went by in front of this house and on up and lowered into the Pataha, traveling on to Columbia Center. The John and Lottie Lynch Family went by this house on the road in the covered wagon, moving to Peola in 1909. There were folks sitting out on the front porch as we passed by. And the house looked the same, painted white, as it does now.
The last folks we knew, who lived there, were the Fred and Marie Scoggin family in about 1914 or '15. For historic reasons, George Scoggin and his wife, by Billy McCanse's consent, went to this old house and entered and looked in all the rooms. From what could be seen, the structure was of logs. The roof on the dining room and kitchen and the bedroom off from these was almost gone.
The big fireplace, which once was at the end of the front room to the north and reached above the comb of the house, was taken away. And the back and front of the fireplace was closed up. The bricks, down on the hearth, were worn from much use.
We took what pictures we could of it. The poplar trees surrounded it and some had died. One had fall partly on the front porch. Shrubbery and tall grass had grown up around, until it was impossible to get a good picture of the old house.
This is where my uncle Dick Graham and Aunt Samantha Hastings Graham lived when the Indian war broke out at Cottonwood, Idaho and many were massacred round about in different places. This was when they would take their bedding out and sleep in the cornfield back of the house to the west.
When the Lynch family went by this place, moving to Peola, they passed through Columbia Center. At that time, there were several houses there, the old flour mill, and such, but it had ceased to be a town, for Pataha and Pomeroy had sapped its strength.
There were two stores at Peola. One was owned by Pat Fitzgerald. There was one across the road from the Fitzgerald store. But my memory isn’t clear about it.
Dick Graham was a brother to Jacob Hastings' wife, Martha, and Dick Graham's wife Samantha Hastings Graham, was a sister to Frances Douglas Hastings. He was the father of Charlottie Catherine Lynch. But the Hastings on each side of these families were no relation.
After Dick Graham and Aunt Samantha sold their place on the Pataha Flat to Jim Warner, they then bought a place back of Anatone,Washington. They may have lived there awhile, but they bought a place in Aston, and were living there in 1902.
When the John and Charlottie Hastings Lynch family came to Pomeroy,Washington, from Oklahoma, the fall of 1901, their first home was on the place later owned by Ed Brunton, at Peola, Washington.
They moved to the Richard Graham place at Anatone in 1902. Two of the children were born there, Rachel on May 17, 1903 and Harmon ofJanuary 27, 1905.
They lived on the Clemons place close to Anatone where Ethel, Viola and Arthur went to school one winter; then to the Huber Mill, where the house burned down, in April 1907. Catching fire from the heating stovepipe on top, the house began to burn while the men folks were gone out for spring work and mother, who was expecting that fall and alone with children who were too small to help, took Papa's big gun and signaled for help by three shots in succession. Two wood cutters came, but were too late to save the house, but helped to get the things away, which Mama had thrown out the windows. She saved her sewing machine from the fire. Afterwards, they found the twenty dollar gold piece she had in the dish cupboard, in the ashes of the fire. The full account of this is in the Lynch and Hastings family records.
They moved to Clara Dixon's homestead, where we enjoyed the summer months and went to the Lewiston Fair in the covered wagon. (We saw with amazement and heard a man singing on an Edison Phonograph. It seemed too mysterious to believe.) And this was where Clara Belle was born October15, 1907.
We moved to the Frank Morgan place that fall and Papa farmed the place a few years. We so enjoyed the outdoors on this place, the songs of the many birds, especially the meadowlarks. The cuckoo's song in the evening, lazy afternoons playing in the sand banks of the River while Papa fished, treks to pick the many pretty flowers in the spring, were some of the many things we enjoyed while on this place.
In the Spring of 1909, we moved back to Peola, on the Billy Bruton place, where Myrtle Mildred was born July 26 of that year. Also, it was here that May, Rachel and I started to our first term of school. Bill and Darrow were born there, Bill on June 18, 1912 and Darrow on October16, 1916. Ethel and Viola were married while we lived there. Viola wasmarried April 10, 1913 and Ethel on October 3, 1913. Grandma Lynch passed away at this place on August 8, 1914 and was buried in the Peola graveyard.

He married ALICE S MORRIS 25 Aug 1872 in Walla Walla, Washington6, daughter of NELSON MORRIS and ELIZABETH DICKINSON. She was born Dec 1856 in Iowa, and died Bef. 1930.
Notes for ENOCH GRAHAM HASTINGS:
ENOCH G. HASTINGS....(ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF SOUTHEASTERN WASHINGTON -1906)
Enoch G. Hastings has an ideal stock farm in Garfield county and is one of the substantial and influential men of the section. He has always been on the frontier and has shown himself a true pioneer, possessed of those capabilities that win success wherever located. He was born in Davis County, Iowa, on November 18, 1850, the son of Jacob P. and Martha Graham Hastings. His father was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and went with his father, the grandfather of our subject, to Ohio, and later to Iowa. He was a cooper by trade and also owned agricultural land. His brothers Enoch and Daniel were in the Civil war. His mother was born in the vicinity of Louisville, Kentucky. Our subject crossed the plains in 1862 with his father, being then eleven years of age. They were in a Train captained by George Manvil and the journey was beset with much trouble and hardships. Many times they were forced to fight back the hostile savages and once on Green river they had a pitched battle. However, they were all reserved alive and ended the journey at Walla Walla. There, Enoch G. completed the education which he had begun in the east and then began to do for himself. He soon learned the stock business and in 1872, located in what is now Garfield county. His first settlement was in Pataha flat and there he labored and improved the estate until 1884., when he decided that his present location was more advantageous for raising stock. Therefore, the Pataha property was sold and Mr. Hastings selected the place where he now dwells, near Central Ferry. He and his sons have 1660 acres of good land, which is suitable for both pasture and crops. A portion of the estate is capable of being irrigated. It lies along the Snake River and is admirably adapted for stock raising. Mr. Hastings well knows how to utilize this choice location to the best advantage and therefore he has made a splendid success in his labors. He and his boys are energetic and progressive men and they have fine herds and do a thriving business. They handle cattle almost exclusively and have well graded stock.
In 1873, Mr. Hastings married Miss Alice S. Morris, who was born in the same place as her husband. Her father, N.S. Morris, crossed the plains in 1863, and settled in the Walla Walla country where he became wealthy and influential. Mrs. Hastings came across the plains with father and knows the hardships of the pioneer well, having also shared her husband's triumphs and labors. To this worthy couple the following named children have been born, Alfred G. and Alvin F., twins; WilliamM.,; Essie A.; John J. and Ella M. Mr. Hastings has spent the major potion of his life on the frontier and he has had the satisfaction of knowing that he has walked well in the way of the pathfinder. Dangers have no terror for him and the hardships which would have overcome the ordinary man have been borne by Mr. Hastings with a fortitude and self-reliance that characterize a typical man. His joy was to thread the way where man had never trod and find out the places where he could lead civilization to bring in the good things of her train. He has done this successfully and has also won the smiles of Dame Fortune to a good extent. He has hosts of friends and admirers among the people and all the old timers are well known to him.
