article about Jasper Chastain

http://museum.bmi.net/Pioneer%20Trails/Lewis,%20J.H.htm

J.H. Lewis, Jasper Chastain and Mr. Snerly decided to leave Los Angeles try their luck in making a home somewhere in Washington Territory, where they could homestead some land. These men made up a train of fourteen wagons, leaving Los Angeles at noon, April 5th 1880. Dave Bowman, a young man and a friend of the family, came along in the train. For many years he made his home with the Lewis Family. My sister, Mary, rode in Mr. Bowman’s wagon as he was chosen to take the lead in the train.

OBIT - Unknown paper - 17 April 1937

Passing of Mrs. Chastain shock to Community

Coming as a shock to her host of friends in Milton was the word of the death of Mrs. Mabel Chastain at her home in Walla Walla Friday evening. Though she had been in impaired health for some time, her death, which was caused by a heart attack, was unexpected.

Mabel Nelson was born in Bellfountain, Ohio, May 27, 1879, and came to Weston as a girl when her parents settled there. Her father established the first brick kiln in this part of the country and operated it for many years. After finishing school and graduating from the Weston normal, she taught school in various districts in Umatilla county, her last school being in Freewater, where she was known and loved by hundreds of children who came in contact with her during the 15 years she taught there.

She was active in social and church activities, being a member of the Women's Improvement club of Milton, the Delphian Culture club and the Sunshine Club of Walla Walla , and was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal church.

She is survived by her husband Victor Chastain, and by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in Walla Walla Monday with Rev. Joseph Settle officiating. Interment was in the Weston cemetery.
