313 MATTHEW, son of Jacobus (133), was b. June 15, 1788; baptized at New Hackensack, N.Y., on the same day. He m. first, Mary Lennington, Jan. 17, 1811; and, second, Abiah Leonard, Nov. 14, 1819. He d. jan. 4, 1865.When comparatively a young man he and his brothers, Peter (3140, William (315), and James (320), left their homes in Dutchess County and migrated to Ohio. He and Peter visited several sections of the State, riding up and down the Alum Creek bottoms and were favorably impressed with the general fertility of the soil, but finally concluded to locate where the village of Westerville, in Blandon township, Franklin County, is now situated, so named in honor of this family. This was in 1816.Tradition has it that they stopped on their way at Granville, in Licking County, which had been already settled by people from Connecticut. Coming as they did from the cold, stony and sterile soil of the Hudson River valley, and hearing of the fertile hills on the Alum Creek, they pressed on, finally returning to their Dutchess County homes to prepare for removal.As early as 1804 they had bought lands, perhaps through other parties. It is probable that both Matthew and Peter Westervelt made purchases before returning to New York and removing to Ohio, which event occurred in July, 1818. The earliest Methodist society was organized in 1819, and among its first male members were Matthew, Peter and William Westervelt. The first church was of hewed logs, and in 1836 it was decided to erect a brick building, Matthew donating a lot on which the present church is now situated.This public enterprise was the result of what in those times was called "the great camp-meeting," which was held on the land of Matthew Westervelt, south of where the main building of Otterbein University is at present. As a result of that gathering a new Methodist church was erected costing about $3,500, and the Blendon Young Men's Seminary founded, which was the predecessor of Otterbein University, one of the noted colleges of the State. The seminary was incorporated on Feb. 9, 1839, Matthew Westervelt being one of its first trustees. He gave the school twenty-five acres of land, a part of which is still occupied by the college property and campus. The Westervelts hoped to make the school the leading college of Western Methodism, but, owing to a rival at Delaware, Ohio, the patronage fell off, and in 1847 it was transferred to the United Brethren.These men and their families were honest, fair-minded, God-fearing people, leaving behind them a good name "which is far to be preferred than great riches." They were hardy pioneers, who faced all the dangers of early frontier life, to carve homes and fertile farms out of the almost untrodden wilderness. In those early days they took an active part in politics, and on coming to the virgin soil of Ohio did not leave their democracy--of the Jeffersonian type--behind them. The progeny of Peter, William and James Westervelt will be found under their respective numbers.

ANCY ISABELLA MCMURRY:Nancy Isabelle (McMurray) Westervelt once waited on William Henry Harrison, whostopped in Pennsylvania at a hotel in which she was working, while he was making his Presidential campaign. Nancy was related to James Blain who ran for U.S.President in 1884 and who was defeated by Grover Cleveland.
Those who rememberd her said she was a spicy lady who sometimes smoked a corncob pipe. She would not ride on the wagon seat, but had to have her rocking chair, which she placed in the middle of the wagon. Her expressions were often laced with the words"Golly" or "Gosh".
Nancy Isabella (McMurry) Westervelt died with cancer ofthe throat while living with her son Israel and his wife, Bette, on the farm that was homesteaded by her husband, William M. Westervelt and his family in 1867.
Her son,Israel and his wife had lived with his parents since they were married and upon his father's death, Israel bought his parents farm and his mother, Nancy continued to live with them. Israel lived the rest of his life on thefarm his parents homesteaded; after his death, the farm was sold to the coal company and the house was moved to Columbus, Kansas, where it still stands.

Lewis R. Westervelt
LEWIS R. WESTERVELT, a well known farmer of Sheridan township, was born in Franklin County, Ohio, March 9, 1841, and lives on 160 acres of land in section 22, township 32, range 22. He is a son of William and Isabella (McMurry) Westervelt, who were Eastern people, the mother being a native o£ Franklin County, Ohio, and the father, of New York. The paternal grandfather, Matthew Westervelt, of New York State, died in Columbus, Ohio, and the maternal grandfather, J. McMurry, died in Franklin County, Ohio.
William Westervelt was married in the State of his birth and lived there many years engaged in farming and fruit raising. The town of Westerville was named for him. The family came to Cherokee County, Kansas, in 1867 and settled on a 160-acre tract of land,—the southwest quarter of section 34, township 32, range 22, in Sheridan township. By his own unaided labor our subject's father improved the land and made for himself and his family a good home. A stanch Republican in politics, he always stood for what was to him the right. Both Mr. Westervelt and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The family consisted of 10 children, as follows: Lewis R., subject of this review; Joseph, living in Bremer County, Iowa; Ezra, who was drowned in 1868; William, a farmer of Labette County, Kansas; Israel R., who lives on the old place in Sheridan township; Clara (Mrs. Joseph Brown), of Lola township; Emma (Mrs. Hodgin), deceased; Dora (Mrs. Henry Dewey), of Independence, Kansas; Sarah (Mrs. Alford Dawson), of Ross township; and Mary (Mrs. Jacob Carpenter) of Lola township. Before settling in Kansas, the family moved to Bremer County, Iowa, where the father secured a large farm and was considered a wealthy farmer.
Lewis R. Westervelt, as one of a large family, had little chance to acquire an education. He remained with his parents until the Civil War, when he enlisted in Company B, 14th Reg., Iowa Vol. Inf., at Waverly, Iowa, August 15, 1862. He participated in the fighting at and around Vicksburg and took part in many skirmishes. He was in one of the three new companies added to the 16th Army Corps. After his discharge at Davenport, Iowa, in 1864, he went back to the old home in Bremer County.
On August 30, 1862, Mr. Westervelt was united in marriage to Martitia Tibbetts of Iowa. Their family consists of eight children, as follows: Martha L. (Mrs. M. Hall), of Sheridan township, who has three sons,—Hugh, Ross and Carl; Asa, who married Sarah Peters and is a farmer in Sheridan township; Arthur, who married Orvilla Hall and has two children,—Glen and Ruth; Cora (Mrs. Ed. Smith), of Sheridan township, who has four children,—Carrie, Elsie, Homer and Elda; Clayton Lewis, a teamster of Ross township; Nellie (Mrs. James Hall), of Sheridan township, who has four children,—Zona Mabel, Myrtle, Ray and Ernest; Fred, a farmer of Sheridan township, who married Mattie Pickering; and Simon, who lives at home. By a second union, with Mrs. Annie Freeman nee Bavard, a son, Harry, was born, who resides at home. The third wife bore the maiden name of America M. Lovelace; she is a native of Missouri, and still survives.
In October, 1867, Mr. Westervelt located on the place where he now lives. The land was wild, only seven acres being under cultivation and there were no roads. The buildings on the place consisted of a small log house. However, there was plenty of game, and the man who could make a "Figure 4" trap could have quail on toast every morning if he so desired, or if he could handle a gun he could have baked wild goose or duck for dinner during the spring or fall. while as to rabbit stew, that could be be served at any hour in the day, for rabbits were as common as grasshoppers.
Our subject, not satisfied with only 160 acres of land, added to the original property from time to time until he now has 460 acres of fine land, about 300 acres of which is under cultivation. All the small grains are produced and large quantities of hay put up every year. Horses are raised for use on the farm, besides other stock.
Mr. Westervelt takes a great interest in politics, always voting the Republican ticket. A member of the Baptist Church of Sheridan township, he stands for that which is for the good of the community always, and is well known throughout the county as a man of upright character and honesty of purpose, a man trusted and liked by all. Maurice L. Westervelt, 88, of rural Pittsburg, died at 8:55 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.
He was born July 27, 1915, in rural Cherokee County to Charlie L. and Mattie Mae (Guy) Westervelt.
He was a lifelong resident of southeast Kansas. He was a farmer and cattleman. He semi-retired in 1979.
He married Genola J. Richardson on Dec. 24, 1937. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include two sons, Alvin L. Westervelt of rural Pittsburg and Lennie Westervelt of Cherokee; one brother, Wayne Westervelt of Nebraska; two sisters, Ila Westervelt of Girard and Pauline Mock of Pittsburg; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Karen Westervelt; and one sister, Vera Pearson.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at McKee Cemetery at rural Columbus. Family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir. Arrangements are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home.
