DOROTHY V. ANDERSON

My ancestors can be traced back, on my mother's side, through six generations, to Christian Walter, who settled in the William Penn colony about 1780. The family later moved to Wayne County, Ohio in the early 1800's.

In 1875, my great, great-grandfather, Lewis Keister Walter, whose maternal grandfather, Lewis Keister, served in the Revolutionary War, and his wife, Mary Ann Wilford Walter, plus eight other Walter and Keister families, came by wagon train from Ohio to Nebraska. In this group were my great-grandparents, Thomas J. Finegan and Rachel Ann Walter Finegan, and my grandmother, Ella M. Finegan. After a year of farming in Nebraska, some of the family moved on to Kansas, but my great-grandparents stayed in the Wahoo area. Thomas Finegan pastured his Jersey cows on the land where West Ward School now stands. Their home still stands on the southeast corner of 7th and Locust, where it was moved many years ago. My grandmother, Ella M. Finegan, who married Bert H. Trumbley spent her childhood in Wahoo and graduated from Wahoo High School in 1893. Her brothers, Walter and Guy Finegan, were barbers in Wahoo at one time. She told me of living in a sod

house as a child and of the Indians asking for handouts, and all the family "working on the Grade" one summer. This meant helping build the railroad through Saunders County. She also told me of the Blizzard of 1888, and how her father came after the children at school. They made a chain by linking arms and holding hands and he led them home.

My mother, Edna Mae Trumbley, the daughter of Ella Finegan Trumbley and Bert H. Trumbley, was born in Fairbury, Nebraska, where her parents had moved. They then moved to Lincoln, where she met my father, Arthur B. Moore, who was from Tennessee, but was working in Lincoln. I can trace my ancestors on my father's side through the Southern side of the Civil War and back to the Revolutionary War also.

When my father was transferred to Boston, Massachusetts, she joined him there, where they were married and I was born August 29, 1917. In the ensuing years, my parents moved to Detroit, Michigan where they were eventually divorced. My mother then married Burt Merner in 1924. In 1926, my mother and step-father visited my grandparents in Lincoln and my "dad" fell in love with Nebraska. We consequently moved to Lincoln where I attended several schools, but ended up graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where we had moved in 1934. We moved to Wahoo in December of 1936 for six months, where my dad worked for O.F. (Ole) Anderson, owner of Anderson Auto Co. since 1913, and I met his son, Garwood.

Garwood and I were married in Omaha at the St. Paul Methodist Church, March 17, 1943. We became the parents of identical twin sons on Dec. 16, 1945. We built a house a mile north of Wahoo and proceeded to raise Palomino quarter horses and Champion Boxer dogs. Garwood continued to run Anderson Auto Co. after Ole retired. Garwood died June 25, 1980. My sons have married. Garwood is the father of two girls, Ashli and Alexandrea, and Gaylord is the father of one girl and two boys, Heather Christian, and Joshua. Ralph Walter Passes Following Brief Illness

Ralf Wilford Walter, a resident of this section of Oregon for 57 years, passed away at his home in South Milton last Friday evening about 9:30, following a very short illness. He became ill Friday morning of a heart disorder and his passing was so unexpected it was a shock to his many friends.

Mr. Walter was born in Wayne County, Ohio, April 5, 1875, and came to Oregon with his parents 57 years ago. They traveled over the prairies in two covered wagons, leaving Kansas July 8, 1882. The party reached the Grande Ronde valley in October where they stopped for a month before crossing over the Blue Mountains by way of the old Thomas and Ruckles Road.

Surviving relatives include his widow, Mrs. Cora Walter; three daughters, Mrs. Erwin Beard of Walla Walla, Mrs. Vance Morris of Milton and Miss Esther Walter of Portland; and four brothers, Clarence, Oscar and Warren Walter, all of Milton.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Christian Church, Rev. Kenneth C. Hendricks officiating. Interment followed at Milton IOOF Cemetery.

Jackson Walters Indicted By Federal Grand Jury

Jackson Howard Walters of Walla Walla, who was arrested late in 1947 and accused of the alleged theft of three motors from the McCaw hospital, was indicted by the federal grand jury in Spokane Monday, according to a court record received in this city Wednesday for filing with the deputy clerk here. November 28 is set forth in the indictment as the date of the act.

A $1,000 appearance bond was filed in behalf of Walters December 30, court records show.

Dorothy Beard

Dorothy Walter Beard, 86, of 116 E. Maple St., died Jan. 19, 1995, at the Park Manor Rehabilitation Center.

The graveside service was held 11 a.m. Monday at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Mrs. Beard was born Aug 7, 1908, to Ralph and Cora Demaris Walter at the Demaris family homestead, south of Milt0n-Freewater on the Walla Walla River. Now a Centennial Farm, it was homesteaded in 1863 by her great-grandfather, Enoch Demaris. The Walters were also early settlers in the Walla Walla Valley.

She attended Milton schools and McLoughlin High School. She graduated from Whitman College in 1931 with a degree in mathematics and also attended the University of Oregon. She received a master's in Librarianship from the University of Washington in 1966 when she was 58 years old.

She married Erwin J. Beard in 1935 in Spokane. He died in 1984. They had made their home in Walla Walla since 1936 when he joined the Walla Walla school system.

Mrs. Beard was employed as a librarian at Walla Walla High School for 13 years until her retirement in 1973. She served a term on the city planning commission in the 1960's.

She was a 50-year member of the American Association of University Women. She also belonged to the Historical Architecture Development Corp., Delta Kappa Gamma, the YWCA, Humane Society, Planned Parenthood, Retired Teachers Association, and the Square-D Swingsters.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dick (Beatrice) Groom of Graham, Wash., and Mrs. Tom (Eleanor) Quick of Oregon City, Ore.; a son, James W. Beard of Walla Walla; a sister, Mrs. Vance (Elva) Morrison of Salem, Ore; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
