Dear Sarah,
Thank you for including my name in your research paper "Descendents of Peter Pruett Simmons".
I have continued to research the family name and have found evidence of Thomas Simmons (Symons) had worked as a servant for Dr. Thomas Fuller and came to America on the Mayflower. Thomas was born in New Holland, Netherlands, as did his father Moses Simmons. Dr. Fuller included Thomas in his last will and testament. Thomas Simmons would be my 11th g-grandfather. Over time I had heard that the Simmons family were of Dutch heritage but not until just recently have I found the connection to the Netherlands. I hope that your research will include the ties to New Holland for the Simmons family tree for future researchers to use and enjoy.
Take care,

Biographical Sketch of Dr. Francis A. Simmons, St. Joseph, Buchanan
County, MO
>From "History of Buchanan County, Missouri, Published 1881, St. Joseph
Steam Printing Company, Printers, Binders, Etc., St. Joseph, Missouri.
Dr. Francis Armstrong Simmons was born in Surry County, North Carolina, on March 17, 1830. His father's name was Peter Pruett Simmons. His mother's maiden name was Nancy Armstrong. His father was well off, owned an iron works, and was a merchant. His parents came to Missouri in 1841. His father died in August, 1841, and his mother in April, 1842. He had four sisters living then: Mary A., Sarah J., Martha D. and Senah N. All are now living in Nebraska. He also had five brothers: Hugh A., Peter P., who died in 1854, in this city; James I. and Thomas A. He was married to Miss Lucy A. Holbert, in Platte County, Missouri, May 12, 1853. Of this union he has had four daughters, and one little granddaughter. In the order of their birth, his children's names are: Flora L., now Mrs. Jas. S. Blount; Mary E.; Nannie A. and Clara Lavinia. All are now living with him, in St. Joseph. He received a collegiate education at Chapel Hill College, Lafayette County, Missouri. He studied medicine, and commenced practicing in 1855. He moved to Cass County, Nebraska, in 1856. He moved to Rochester, Andrew County, Missouri on April 26, 1864. Then on March 12, 1879, moved to St. Joseph, where he now lives. While living at Rochester, he was one of the founders of, and President of the Andrew County Medical Society. He is a member of the District
Medical Association of Northwest Missouri; was one of its Vice Presidents, and represented it in the American Medical Association, that met in Farwell Hall, Chicago, Illinois, in 1877, where 760 representative men convened from all the states, and from Canada. He was a member of the State Medical Association, and was one of the founders and incorporators of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, of this city, and Professor of Physiology and Diseases of the Nervous System, and Clinical Lecturer on the General Diseases of Women, for nearly two years, in this institution. After severing his connection with
this school, last January, he became one of the organizers and incorporators of the Northwestern Medical College, and is now President of, and Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine, in this college. While living at Rochester, he urged the necessity of the publication of a medical journal in this city, and partly through his influence the St. Joseph Medical and Surgical Reporter was started, edited by Dr. J. P. Chesney, in July, 1880. He contributed to this journal articles upon cerebral anaemia of infants, headaches, and about doctors. He has been a large contributor to other medical journals, upon various subjects, and has been an active worker in the transactions of all the medical societies with which he has been connected. He has by earnest work and constant study endeavored to keep well up with the progress of the profession. He is extensively acquainted throughout the Northwest and with the rise and progress of the Platte Purchase. He saw this city rise from an Indian trading post, a mere village, and attire herself in the beauty and gradeur of the "Queen City of the West".

In Reply to: Re: 1881 History of Fremont County Iowa by Mona Sarratt Knight of 269
Hugh Simmons commonly referred to himself as Dr. H. A. Simmons, I know he did marry G-Grandmother Lydia Rector in 1850. His brother referred to himself as Dr. F.A. Simmons, and was the President of Northwestern Medical College in St. Joseph in 1889. I have had difficulty finding their common parents names. I think they were born in NC but have no data to support that fact. I am checking old letters and diaries written from the field during the Civil War where Dr. H.A. Simmons served as a doctor for General McClellan in the field. I have found his pension record number. One of the relatives has an old obituary that appeared in the Fremont newspaper in 1891. I hope to get to read soon and maybe get additional clues. Thank you for your help!
If you find additional info please let me know.

Golden Wedding Observed By Mr. and Mrs. Simmons
Although Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Simmons of 23 Woodlawn were married October 13, 1897 the celebration of their fiftieth anniversary was postponed until today and the couple will be guests of honor at a family party to be given at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Simmons, 1512 Walla Walla Avenue.
The rites of 50 years ago were solemnized near Fruitvale, Ore., and the pair has since resided in this community with the exception of one year spent in Spokane.
Mrs. Simmons, a native of Illinois, was Belle Smith before her marriage. She came west as a youngster, first to La Grande where incidentally, she met the young man who was later to become her husband. Moving to Oregon City to attend high school, she kept up a correspondence with him until her graduation and then came up here for the wedding.
Mr. Simmons, born in Nebraska, moved to the Grande Ronde valley of Oregon in the fall of 1891.
After their marriage, they raised wheat on the Eureka flat district for 10 years, spent one year in Spokane and farmed elsewhere in this community. For the past five years they have been living in Walla Walla.
Both are members of the Church of the Nazarene. They have two sons, Hollis Simmons of Walla Walla and Glen Simmons of Milton, and five grandchildren. In addition, Mrs. Simmons has two sisters, Mrs. R. L. Daniels of Orchard station and Mrs. Carrie Newman of Portland while her husband’s immediate family consist of two sisters, Mrs. C. W. Davis of Everett and Mrs. P.F. Waldrop of Warm Beach and three brothers, A. W. and B. L. Simmons of Stateline and L.W. Simmons of Walla Walla.
