EREMIAH D OVERTURF:Sarah -
I believe I have Jeremiah Overturf in the 1830 and 1840 census as well. There's not a lot of detail there, but the dates match.
[20030329] 1830 Federal Census (Ohio; Licking; Newton; page 383)
Jeremiah Overturff; 1 male 15-20; 1 female 20-30
[presumably Jeremiah age 19, Margaret age 20]
[20030329] 1840 Federal Census (Ohio; Licking; Newton; page 167)
Jeremiah Overturf; 1 male under 5; 1 5-10; 1 20-30; 1 female under 5; 2 5-10; 1 30-40
[presumably Jeremiah age 29; Margaret age 30; Nancy age 10; Mary age 4; Harriet age 3, Simon age 7, George age 0]
I hadn't found the 1850 or later census records before, so thanks. I noticed a couple errors on 1850 though - there's a listing with the rest of the family for Hiram Overturf M age 2, and the Saml Patteron is really Saml Patterson.
I am intrigued by Belinda Overturf's marriage to Phillip Patterson. I wonder if he was related to Andrew Jackson Patterson. He was her brother-in-law
Here's a transcription of the familiy history letter I mentioned previously. I believe this was written by Lulu Patterson (daughter of Jeremiah Patterson and Fanny Stephenson). I love the writing in the second sentence but the census pretty clearly shows that her name was Margaret, not Sariah. However, Jeremiah senior (b. 1811) had a son Jeremiah (b. 1846) whose wife was named Sarah. I wonder if there was a confusion on Lulu's part (or her mama) about which Jeremiah was which..
Let me know if you'd like a copy and I'd be happy to send you one.
"Jeremiah Overturff Grandmother's father was Holland Dutch. Mama don't know a thing about his wife only her given name Sariah.
Grandmother Nancy Patterson born March 1st 1830 Mason County Ill.
Grandfather Andrew Jackson Patterson I think he was born in the north of Ireland or his father was.
Papa Jeremiah Debolt Patterson born in Columbus, Ohio Oct 27 1848 married Oct 12 1870. Debolt was a family surname on Grandmother's side.
Mama Jemima Stephenson born Sept 30 1858 in Calao, Macon Co, MO.
Mama's father James Harris Stephenson see aunt Be[deleted] about date of birth
Mother Rebicia [sic] White born in Mo"
Take care - Herky

NDREW JACKSON PATTERSON:Milton Eagle, 1897 Friday, September 10th
A. J. Patterson Dead.
A. J. Patterson, the well known orchardist living below Milton, died at his home last Monday evening of paralysis. Mr. Patterson was first stricken with the disease some two or three years ago and since that time had been partially helpless, but the attack that was directly responsible for his death occurred recently. Deceased was about 60 years of age and leaves a wife and family of children.
Funeral services were held at the family residence Tuesday at 2 p.m. by Rev. Wallace, of the Presbyterian church. The remains were buried at the Ford cemetery.

Mrs. Lucretia Overturf, nee Whittemore, of Milton, Umatilla county, Oregon, was born at Eugene, Lane county, Oregon, November 20, 1854, her father being McDonough Whittemore, a native of New York. He was married to Nancy Bowman, a native of Illinois; emigrated with her to Oregon, in 1852, settling at Eugene, where he worked at his trade of a blacksmith, until his death in 1882, aged fifty-four years, his wife following, in 1887, aged sixty-three years. They were parents of ten children, the subject of this sketch being next to the youngest.
Lucretia Whittemore, of this biography, met, in 1873, Hon. F. M. Crockett, of Pendleton, then County Clerk of Umatilla county, at Pendleton, and was married to him July 6, 1873. Mr. Crockett had then filled two terms and had just been elected a third time. He was a native of Tennessee, having been born near Nashville, June 1, 1834. In the fall of 1860 he left his home for Yreka, California, in response to a letter from his brother, E. S. Crockett, who at that time was in the blacksmithing business at Yreka.
Mr. F. M. Crockett remained in northern California for a year, working in the mines, meet with very good success, but on account of ill health was compelled to leave. He then came to Oregon and settled for a time in Albany, and on recovering his usual health, he went to Florence, Idaho, where he engaged in mining during the brief excitement in that camp. He went from there to Boise City in 1863, and thence to the Willamette valley, where he followed farming for one season. In the fall of 1864 he removed to Butter Creek, Umatilla county, where he bought a farm, on which he remained unitl 1876, at which place he resided when first elected County Clerk.
At the regular Democratic convention, in 1872, Mr. Crockett, Nathan Pierce, Hugh McArthur and James Moore were candidates for the position of County Clerk of Umatilla county. It was arranged between Messrs. Crockett and pierce that the one who should receive the least number of votes on first ballot would withdraw in favor of the other. Pierce withdrew, Crockett was nominated and subsequently elected by a vote of the peole. After serving the first term, Mr. Crockett was again nominated and re-elected by a large majority. Before the term had expired he resigned, on account of failing health, and a successor was appointed, but Mr. Crockett was still retained by the court during its sessions until the expiration of the term. He then sold his land on Butter creek and bought a ranch of 240 acres, situated three miles north of Milton, which he began to improve to fruit culture and where he made his home.
During the winter of 1886 Mr. Crockett was strongly favored by the people of Eastern Umatilla as a candidate for Representative to the Legislature. This was unsolicited by him, but Eastern Umatilla was in need of an honest man – a man who, although unassuming and not a leader of men, could be depended on when the ballot was cast. Thus was Mr. Crockett put forward and subsequently elected to the memorable Legislature of 1886-87. Well did he deserve the confidence placed in him, and it was, in part, due to his honest but silent work, that such a rousing majority for the great and pressing need of division, greeted him in the House of Representatives. And had this true-hearted man lived until another year had passed, the legislative halls would have again echoed his quiet "Here," in answer to the daily roll-call, But his health, none too good for years, gave completely away, and he died February 25, 1887.
Mr Crockett was mourned by a host of friends. He was a man who could illy be spared from any community with which he might have been identified. He was strickly honest, but very unassuming; active in business and politics, but quiet and not gibven to buncombe; intelligent and learned, but still of the common people; in fact, a man whose name will always carry with it the memory of honesty, integrity and uprightness among those who knew him best. He was buried in the Valley Cemetery, and his funeral was the most largely attended one ever witnessed in his vicinity, thus mutely testifying to his widespread popularity and sterling worth of character.
Mrs. Crockett was left a widow with five children and another was born soon after his death. The naes of the children are : Clyde, Myrtle, Edith, Grace, Pansy, who died April 26, 1888; and Frances, who died January 7, 1889.
Mr. Crockett was a poor boy when he came West and was compelled to work hard for a living; but soon accumulated enough to go into busness for himself, and before his death had made sufficient to leave his wife and children in comfortable circumstances, leaving an estate that is worth, in 1893, $50,000. The farm is adapted to raising of fruit, including all kinds of berries, a great variety of all kinds having been planted by him before his death.
The subject of this notice was married a second time to A. J. Overturf, August 12, 1890, he being a native of Missouri, who came to Oregon in 1889. He is a practical agriculturist and conducts the home farm.
