AARON MILLER
Aaron Miller, a retired nurseryman of Milton, Umatilla county, was born in Baltimore county, maryland, on the 7th of December, 1829, a son of Michael and Anna Mariah (Henry) Miller. Both parents were born in Baltimore county, Maryland, and there were united in marriage. In 1829 they removed to Richland county, Ohio, where the father took up government land, later selling it and renting. In 1840 Mr and Mrs Miller removed to Perry county, Illinois taking along their little family. Michael Miller followed farming there for two years, at the termination of which time he removed to Van Buren county, Iowa, farmed there for two years and then took up forty acres of land which he improved and on which he resided for ten years. On this home place the death of Mrs. Miller occurred.
When eleven years of age Aaron Miller, whose name initiates this review, removed with his parents to Perry county, Illinois, where he completed his education. In 1849 aaron Miller and his brother Joshua crossed the plains in ox-drawn wagons, making their way to California in search of gold. They located at, Diamond Spring, California, where they followed mining throughout the winter and the following spring set out for Rich Gulch. They met with a heavy snowstorm between Bidwells Gulch and Rich Gulch and were some time in reaching their destination. In 1852, Mr Miller with others, started in the sawmilling business on Little Butte creek, California, twenty miles easst of Chico and for two years he successfully conducted the business, during which time he received a bad injury. Mr Miller again resumed mining and after two years returned to his old home in Iowa. In the spring of 1859 he went to Clark county, Missouri, and bought eighty acres of land, which he improved and operated for about two years, and during that time he was married. In 1860 he traded his eighty acres of land for four hundred acres in Ringgold county, Iowa. The land at the time the trade was put through was worth easily five dollars an acre, but later it fell in price, a piece of misfortune that financially crippled Mr Miller. he was, however, of a courageous and determined nature and did not for an instant allow this disaster to affect his life. He removed to Monroe county, Iowa, where his brother Daniel was engaged in farming and he worked for him as a farm hand, also renting land near Eddyville, Iowa. In 1864 he determined to go west and started overland for California. For two years he successfully operated land in Stockton, California, and later for three years in Sonoma county. In 1871 he moved onto land near Walla Walla, Washington and after one year spent there took up his present farm of two hundred and forty acres, near Milton. He first built a log house and later erected a fine large home. He brought the land to a high state of cultivation and in 1873 started in the nursery business on a small scale. The success of this venture seemed assured from the start and it increased rapidly from year to year. In 1893, the oldest son of Mr. Miller, Samuel A., took over the work and enlarged the plant. Soon afterward his two brothers, G.W. and C. Bert, became interested in the business and today they have one hundred and ninety acres devoted to this interest. The nursery buildings are spacious and of fine architecture and the sons are possessors of attractive homes in the vicinity. after turning the business over to his oldest son mr. Miller retired from active business life, a representative and influential citizen.
On the 12th of December, 1858, Mr Miller was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Bradfield, a daughter of George and Rachael (Riggs) Bradfield, and a native of Clark county, Missouri. Her father was engaged in wagon-making for a number of years and in later life became a successful farmer. Six children were born to the union of Mr and Mr Miller; Mrs L.M. Roup, Samuel, Sophia, G.W., F. R. and Bert.
Throughout his life Mr Miller has been a stanch member of the republican party, having firm belief in the principles of that party as factors in good government. His religiious faith is that of the Adventist church. mr Miller maintains an active interest in public and civic affairs and every movement for the betterment of the community may count on his undivided support.

POSTHUMOUS AWARD IS GIVEN TO AARON MILLER.
A posthumous award for the late Aaron Miller, founder of the Milton Nursery Co., was presented last Thursday evening to Bert and George Miller, sons of the pioneer nurseryman, by Mrs. Ralph Fowler, Pendleton, state president of the Oregon Federation of Garden Clubs. The award was made at the dinner and antique show sponsored at the Community Building by the local Garden Club.
The federation annually makes a posthumous award honoring pioneers who did outstanding work in horticulture. The citation read by Mrs. Fowler told of many of the highlights of Aaron Miller. The presentation came on the company's 70th anniversary. Bert and George Miller, incidentally, still carry on the business founded by their father, and it has grown until its products are distributed over the entire nation.

Notes for SAMARIA BRADFIELD:
MILTON EAGLE - 1937
MRS. A. MILLER IS NINETY-FOUR
Mrs. Aaron Miller, today is celebrating her 94th birthday at her home near Milton. That in itself is worthy of distinction. But another claim to distinction is Mrs. Miller's. She has lived in the same home for 66 years and has seen her husband's business grow from a small beginning to one of the outstanding industries of the valley.
On December 12th, 1858 Miss Samaria Bradfield was married to Aaron Miller who had recently returned from California where he had gone during the gold rush of 1849. Four years later, with their little daughter, the couple started west with Mr. Miller acting as captain of a wagon train of seven wagons. Though possessing a real pioneer spirit of courage and endurance Mrs. Miller was never quite able to overcome the terror of Indians. The party arrived in California after four weary months of travel and settled about ten miles from Stockton. In 1872 they started out again by wagon for Oregon, arriving on Russel creek at the end of am eight-week's journey. One year later they moved to Milton where they took up a homestead. They built a little log cabin which served as their home for eight years. A loft provided sleeping rooms for the children.
In 1880 a new home was erected on the site of the little cabin and in 1903 it was enlarged. This has been Mrs. Miller's home ever since. Mr. Miller established the Milton Nursery, starting with 160 acres. The company now has 325 acres under cultivation and car-loads of trees and shrubs are shipped to wholesale markets throughout the country every year.
When the Miller's first came to Milton it was composed of a blacksmith shop, a stage station and several houses.
Six children were born to the couple, Mrs. M.L. Raup, who now makes her home with her mother since the death of her husband; Sam, Sophia, Fanny, George and Bert. George and Bert have succeeded their father in the operation of the nursery. Mr. Aaron Miller passed away in 1925. Sam, Sophia and Fanny have also passed on.
Mrs. Miller has two relics which she prizes above all other. One is a flat iron which she smuggled across the plains in spite of the dictates of the men of the party who insisted in barring all non-essentials. The other is a hand-turned rolling pin of black walnut which her husband made for her. At one time during the trip west the precious rolling pin was left behind and Mrs. Miller held up the entire party while her husband rode back five miles to recover it.
Mrs. Miller is a member of the Adventist church and her unfaltering loyalty has been given to her religious faith. The family have always been active in church and community affairs, and they have given unsparingly of both time and effort in making the community a better place in which to live.
The Milton Eagle extends its heartiest congratulations to Mrs. Miller on this occasion and sincerely hopes that many more years of happiness and health will be hers.

OBIT - MILTON MOURNS MRS. A. MILLER
Mrs. Samaria Miller, a resident of Milton for seventy years, passed away at her home, Tuesday, June 30, 1942, at the age of ninety-eight years.
Mrs. Miller was born in Lauray, Park County, Missouri, December 30, 1843. She was married at an early age to Aaron Miller, pioneer nurseryman of Milton-Freewater. Mr. Miller died in 1925 at the age of 95 years.
Mr. And Mrs. Miller came west by wagon train in 1863. Mr. Miller, who had come to California from Maryland in the '49 gold rush age before settling in Missouri, was made captain of the covered wagon caravan in which the family traveled. The first six years of the Millers' westert life was spent on a farm near Stockton, California. In 1872 they came to Oregon and filed on a homestead, the site of which is now the present location of the family home and the Milton Nursery.
Mr. Miller launched the career of the Milton Nursery company in 1878 - a company which bears the distinction of being the largest and one of the oldest nurseries operating in the Pacific northwest. Well deserving of the honor, the company through the able management of the sons of Mr. And Mrs. Miller and C.D. Hobbs, associate, has perpetuated the honest principles and practices inaugurated by its founder.
To Mr. And Mrs. Aaron Miller were born six children, three of whom survive. Mrs. Louisa Raup, who has made her home with her mother during her last years; George Miller and Bert Miller, sons who have managed the nursery since the death of their father. Sam Miller, the eldest son, died in 1932 and two daughters, Sophia and Fanny, also preceded the mother in death.
Mrs. Miller was a staunch Christian and a lifelong member of the Seventh Day Adventist church. Funeral arrangements await the arrival of Bert Miller, now in the east on a business trip.

Notes for SAMUEL AARON MILLER:
An illustrated history of Umatilla County
Pages 484-485
Samuel A Miller -- We are pleased to accord to this prominent citizen a place in these records of our county commensurate to his marked ability and faithful activities, both in public capacities and private enterprises, wherein he has ever shown himself worthy of the most unbounded confidence and high esteem of his fellows, which, it is not presuming to say, he enjoys to the fullest extent. his record as an early pioneer, markedly successful business man, promoter and upbuilder of educational institutions as well as prominence in municipal affairs, are alike replete with interest and instruction.
He is a product of the county, practically, having spent almost all of his life within its precincts, growing up with the thriving little city of Milton, which had no existence within the time of his memory, receiving here his education and attaining here the brilliant success which is his to enjoy, and the enviable prominence the result of intrinsic merit. he was born in California on July 18, 1866, being brought to this county by his parents in 1872. They settled on lieu land one mile north of Milton, where they still reside. He continued with his parent as assistant until 1886, when he entered partnership with his father in the nursery business. OBIT - S.A. MILLER ENDS LIFE IN MILL RACE
April 1932
(Probably Milton Eagle, I will paraphrase as duplicate of above)
The community was stirred to the profoundest depths of sorrow early Tuesday morning by news that S.A. Miller, one of its best-loved citizens had ended his life during the night, in the pool at the intake of the Peacock mill flume where there is a pool of considerable size, located between the Fred Baxter place and Parallel Street.
Mr. Miller suffered a breakdown in December following the closing of the First National Bank, of which he was vice president, and has been making a valiant fight for return to health since that time. It is believed that the prolonged strain so weakened his resistance that he finally decided to end the struggle by his own hand. Some time during the night he left his home, clad only in his night-clothes and a bath robe, and going to the small bridge on Parallel street, fired a bullet from a small caliber rifle into his head, plunging into the water below.
When he was missed early in the morning by Mrs. Miller, his brothers and a number of friends were notified and an immediate search was made which had proved fruitless until the body was accidentally discovered by Ben Hurrell, who had gone to the intake to clean out the debris which had collected on the grates. Upon opening the center section of the covering, Mr. Horrell was horrified to see the body of a man whom he did not then identify lying in the water. He immediately called officers and the body was removed to Munselle's mortuary parlors.
Mr. Miller had spent nearly all his life in Milton and since reaching manhood had always been active I community affairs. For about 35 years he served as clerk of school district #31, a position in which he seemed to take much pride as being a service to the community. He represented the county in the state legislature for four successive terms. Retiring from this work about five years ago. During the lifetime of his father, the late Aaron Miller, he was actively associated with him in the development and management of the Milton Nursery.
For the past 17 years he had been a member of the library board, giving generously of his time to this work. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church.
Mr. Miller was the eldest of three sons of the late Aaron Miller and his estimable wife. He was born at Headsburg, Calif, July 18, 1866. His parents came to Milton in 1871 and shortly afterward the elder Mr. Miller founded the Milton nursery, now one of the community's most valued industries. He was educated in the local schools and the old Milton academy.
Surviving relatives with whom the whole community mourns his tragic passing are his mother, Mrs. Aaron Miller; his widow; one son Evert Miller; one daughter Mrs. Earl B. Ray of Bellflower, CA; one sister Mrs. L.A. Raup; and two brothers, George W. and C.B. Miller of Milton.
Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed.
Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church in Milton Saturday afternoon, April 9, at 2:30 o'clock, in charge of Elder F.B. Jensen, assisted by Elders A.J. Breed and F.M. Oliver of College Place, and Elder H.S. Shangle of Walla Walla. Interment will be in the Milton IOOF cemetery.

George W. Millers, Milton Pair, Wed for Fifty Years
College Place -- Nearly 200 relatives and friends were present in the Milton recreational hall Sunday evening for golden wedding of Mr and Mrs George W Miller, pioneer residents of Walla Walla Valley. The original bridal party, with the exception of the minister who performed the rites, was on hand for the occasion.
Miller, now president of the Milton nursery, was born on the place homesteaded by his pioneer parents in 1870 and is one of the partners in the nursery founded by his father, Aaron Miller, in 1878. Mrs Miller was a member of the Hill family which settled in College Place at the time Walla Walla college was founded in 1892. She was one of the first students and was a member of the second graduating class to complete college requirements in 1896, with her marriage to Miller, a student-teacher, following a few months later.
Wed on Homestead
The marriage took place on the homestead, the Milton Seventh-day Adventist church at that time being located on the original Miller premises. The function Sunday was also on the homestead property in the partially completed hall. The property now belongs to Miller.
On hand for the event was the Walla Walla college band, under direction of Prof. H.E. Mitzelfelt. Both the Millers are members of the organization at present. miller organized the band at the college in the summer of 1893 and taught band and orchestra for seven years. he was music teacher at the college for three years.
Mrs Miller is art teacher at the college and is now completing her twenty-fourth year at the college in that capacity. She wore a gold orchid for the occasion.
C. D. Hobbs of Milton, brother-in-law of Mrs Miller and best man at the ceremony 50 years ago, was master of ceremonies. As the guests assembled the college band played. Three piano solos were played by Mrs Curtis M Hanna of La Jolla, Calif., daughter of the honored guests. Prof Mitzelfelt played two cello numbers with Mrs Mitzelfelt accompanying.
History Given
The history of the bride and bridegroom of 50 years ago was given in pictures projected on the screen with Mrs. Hobbs, bridesmaid at the occasion, narrator. The entire life of the couple beginning at babyhood was shown. To conclude her part in the program Mrs Hobbs read a poem written for the occasion by Mrs E.E. Andross, a close family friend.
Mrs Virgil Parrett, another daughter of the Millers, sang two vocal numbers accompanied by Mrs Hanna who played a violin number accompanied by Prof Stanley Walker. Elder F.M. Burg, dean emeritus of the school of theology, read an original poem prepared especially for the occasion. Mrs Parrett sang "Silver Threads Among the Gold" to band accompaniment. Mrs. W. F. (Minnie) Martin, pioneer resident of College Place, related numerous episodes regarding her contact with the Millers both before and after their marriage.
The response by the Millers preceded a number concluding the formal program. During refreshments a trio, Mrs Hanna, violinist, Prof Mitzelfelt, cellist, and Prof. Walker, pianist, played selections.
Refreshments Served
Mrs N.E. Carpenter was in charge of refreshments with Mrs K.A. Aplington, Betty Jane Aplington and Miss Bernice Searle assisting at the long damask covered table with a centerpiece of gladioli. R. L. Collins and E. O. Becker served the ices. Grandaughters of the Millers, the Misses Joyce, Jeanett and Kathleen Hanna, Darlene, Carrol and Bonnie Parrett with their cousin, Marilyn Miller, served.
Gifts were on a lace covered table with a centerpiece of gladioli and were in charge of Mrs Dave Kelln, a niece. Mrs Parrett was in charge of the guest book. Gold cups and white gold gladioli and other varieties presented by Mrs Oland Hubbs and Mrs. Leon Losey provided the decorations for the evening. Cecil Brody assisted in preparations for the evening.
The original wedding story as it appeared in a local valley newspaper was read during the evening. Mrs D. R. Nichols of College Place played the wedding march at that time and was present as were three of the original guests who did not participate in the function.
Gifts presented
Members of the immediate family presented the couple a console model radio set and record player. Recordings were made during the evening to provide a permanent record of the occasion plus well wishes of the guests which were recorded later. A large mirror framed in gold was presented the couple by the faculty members of Walla Walla College.
Out-of-town guests included Dr and Mrs. Virgil Parrett and children of Los Angeles; Mrs Curtis M. Hanna and children of La Jolla, Calif; Elder and Mrs Celian Andross of Phoenix, Ariz; Elder Romeo Hubbs of New York City and Warren Becker of Angwin, Calif.
