AIRVILLE – Page 745
Airville, formerly called McSherrysville, is a pleasantly located village in Lower Chanceford, twenty two miles from York. Joseph McSherry came to the vicinity in 1796, at the age of four years, and grew to manhood with a Frenchman who was a nailmaker, and lived near the site of the United Brethren parsonage. He married when nineteen, and started a blacksmith shop, near the site of Joseph Pearce’s store. He kept tavern for thirty-five years. The second house of the town was built by Aquila Montgomery, a colored man. Of this race there are now quite a number in the vicinity. Jackson McSherry built the next house, and afterward moved to
Warrensburg, Mo. Frederick McSherry built a store house in 1846, on the site of Mr. Pearce’s property, where he conducted the mercantile business until 1872, when he moved to his present stand. John Manifold conducted a store at an early period, and Robert McCollins opened one a short distance up the York road.
The first postoffice of the vicinity was called Lower Chanceford. William Cowan, now ninety-five years old, was postmaster in 1828 and for several years later. The office was then a mile from the site of the present town. The mail for many years was carried on horse back by a dwarf called "Little Philie Cole," over a route extending from York to Bel Air, Md. It took him one week to make the trip. "Little Philie" was a brave boy, and was afraid of nothing but thunder. If he saw an approaching storm, he would go into the nearest house and at once conceal himself in a feather bed, till it subsided.
Joseph McSherry succeeded Mr. Cowan as postmaster, and moved the postoffice to the new village. A change in the national administration made James McCall postmaster who moved the office near to McCall’s Ferry. The other postmasters since have been E. P. Skelton, Frederick McSherry in 1865. Since 1869 Joseph Pearce has held the office. William F. Smith is the physician of the village. Drs. McDonald and Gordon, attended the sick of the community at an earlier date. Airville cornet band, consisting of sixteen pieces, was organized in 1874. N. B. McSherry is leader. Coplin Hall was built, a number of years ago, for the meeting of literary societies, and for other public occasions. It contains a public library. S. B.
McSherry was appointed postmaster in 1885.
Orson’s Mill, erected three-fourths of a century ago, is now owned by D. W. Grove. In 1820, and later, John Patterson manufactured wooden chairs in large quantities near Airville.

NELSON McSHERRY
Nelson McSherry made for himself a creditable position in the business and political circles of Prescott, so that his death was the occasion of deep and widespread regret when on the 27th of July, 1916, he passed away. He was then but sixty-one years of age, his birth having occurred on the 31st of July, 1855. He was a native of Pennsylvania and a son of J.J. and Margaret (Mitchner) McSherry, both of whom were natives of the Keystone state. At an early day they removed with their family to Missouri, settling near Warrensburg, where they spent their remaining days, and there Nelson McSherry was reared and educated. He was a young man of twenty-five years when in 1880 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Harvey, of Warrensburg, and to them were born five children: Lulu, who is the wife of J.D. Walter; Robert, who is living in Nevada; Joseph C., whose home is in Prescott; Urie D.; and Hester.
Mr. and Mrs. McSherry began their domestic life inMissouri and there resided until 1888, when they came with their family to the northwest, establishing their home in Prescott, where Mr. McSherry embarked in business as proprietor of a small mercantile establishment. He adapted himself and his affairs to this part of the country and the conditions here existing and in the course of years he built up a growing and gratifying business. He closely studied the needs of the people in relation to the line of goods which he carried and by reason of his carefully selected stock, his reasonable prices and his straightforward dealing he won a very liberal and well deserved patronage, so that his business became one of the profitable enterprises of the town.
In public affairs Mr. McSherry also took a deep and helpful interest. His fellow townsmen, recognizing his worth and ability, elected him the first mayor of Prescott. He was always ready to advance the interests of the town in every possible way and stood at all times for progress and improvement. Fraternally he was connected with the Woodmen of the World and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was reared a Methodist, but Mrs. McSherry is a member of the Presbyterian church. In 1913, because of failing health, he retired from active business and turned the management of his store over to his sons. Death called him in 1916 and at his passing deep regret was felt for he was a progressive business man, a loyal and patriotic citizen, a faithful friend and a devoted husband and father. He counted it his greatest happiness to provide for the welfare and comfort of his wife and children and in every relation of life he manifested those sterling qualities which command respect, confidence and honor in every land and clime.

AROLD GLENN BISHOP:Obituary - Walla Walla Union Bulletin - April 5, 2006
HAROLD BISHOP
Aug. 20, 1919 - April 1, 2006
MILTON-FREEWATER - Longtime resident Harold G. Bishop , 86, died April 1, 2006, at Regency at the Park, 420 S.E. Myra Road, College Place.
The memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church through the funeral home.
Mr. Bishop was born Aug. 20, 1919, in Pomeroy to William and Cassie Clark Bishop. He attended Prospect Pointand and Walla Walla High Schools.
He and Violet McSherry married July 14, 1940, in Milton, OR. During WWII he served as a seabee with the U.S. Navy, stationed in New Foundland and Guam.
Following his discharge, he worked for the Sopers Oil and Utah Canning companies and Pendleton Frozen Foods before farming in the Umapine area.
He took time to talk with farmers who stopped by for help or advice. He employed many youths in the area in his zuchini and hay fields. When he needed a new piece of farm equipment h enjoyed figuring out how to make it in his shop. Mrs. Bishop died 1987.
He loved hunting and fishing with his brothers and friends. Because he could recall names and dates and shared stories of the past, many friends asked him about what they used to do because he remembered everything. Many of his lifelong friends were like family to him.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Milton-Freewater, Milton-Freewater Elks and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He derived strength and pride from his family. He was looking forward to meeting three soon-to-be-born great-grandchildren and joked about taking a picture of their bald little heads with his.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Don and Kathy Bishop of M-F; two daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy and Jack Melton and Jeri Bishop, all of M-F; special friend and companion Marian Babcock of M-F, five grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by son William Bishop; daughter Sherry Bishop; and two brothers, Lewis and Blaine Bishop.
