OBIT- Jennie E. Shelton Dies After Illness - July 1957

Mrs. Jennie E. Shelton passed away on Wendnesday, July 10, 1957 at her home at 1317 Chestnut St., after a lingering illness. She was 94 years of age.

Born November 19, 1862, in Sussex Vale, New Brunswick, Canada, Mrs. Shelton was married to Alexander Shelton in 1883 and lived in Massachusetts and Connecticut until his death in 1910. They had no children.

She came west in 1912 to visit five brothers whom she had not seen for 30 years. They were Henri, Herbert, Clarence, and Fred March of this area, and Edwin March of Chico, Calif. She later decided to stay and lived with her brother, Herbert March for 45 years. He passed away last month, June 9th, at the age of 96.

Mrs. Shelton is survived by her brother, Fred E. March, Umapine; one niece, Mrs Florence Maistretti of Petaluma, Calif., and nine nephews, Roy, Edwin, Ernest, Hulette, Arthur and Fred E. March, Jr., all of this area. Also J.E. March of Denver, Colo.; J.E. March of Sacramento, Calif.; and Roland of Chico, Calif; and several great nieces and nephews.

The funeral services will be held at Munselle's Chapel Saturday , July 13th at 10:30 a.m., the Rev. Truman Robbins officiating. Casket bearers are Bill Wood, Clifford Caviness, Harold Coe, Earl Frazier, Roy Hyatt, and Jasper Sams. Interment will follow in the IOOF cemeter in Milton-Freewater.

H. March Dies In 96th Year

MILTON-FREEWATER -- Henri March, 96, of Milton died in a nursing home in Walla Walla Friday after an extended illness. A retired farm, he had lived in Northeastern Oregon since 1881.

March was born December 31, 1852 in Londaon. When he was three he accompanied his parents across the ocean traveling to Canada by sailboat. he was married to Jennie M. Griffith in 1877 in St. John New Brunswick. They farmed near St John for three years.

March joined two of his brothers at Chico, Calif. in 1880. After a year there he came to Oregon and worked near Meacham, freighting vegetables and supplies and selling them along the road wich was being built there.

In 1882 he and his wife settled on a homestead near Weston. They came to Milton in 1921. His wife died several years ago.

Sons Earnest and Hulette March, Milton, survive him along with his daughter Mrs. Florence Maestretti, College Place. He was the brother of Herbert M. March, Milton March and Fred March all of Umapine and Mrs. Jennie Shelton of Milton.

Six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive him.

Funeral will be Monday from a local chapel withthe Rev. Fred Greene officiating. Burial wll be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Herbert March Sr., a Canadian, settled on Basket Mountain in 1880 after coming to Oregon by wagon from a Paradise sawmill.

March was born in 1860 in New Brunswick, Canada. He and his brother Clarence came by train to Paradise, California to join another brother Edwin. March had left Canada when he was eight.

He raised cattle and farmed for many years on Basket Mountain.

March married Elizabeth Lessor on October 5, 1890. Two sons were born; Edwin at Umapine and Leroy at Milton-Freewater. On December 24, 1893, his wife died.

His sister Jennie Shelton came from Worcester, Mass. in 1912 and lived with him until his death.

In 1918 he purchased the Comb’s Estate below Umapine. After he returned they moved to Umapine, later to Milton-Freewater, where he died June 9, 1857.

OBIT - Area Pioneer Dies at Age 96 at Home - June 1957

One of Milton-Freewater's oldest citizens, Herbert March, 96, passed away on June 9, 1957, at his home at 1317 Chestnut street following a lingering illness.

March was born in Sussex Vale, New Brunswick, Canada on September 15, 1860. He came to Oregon in 1880 and made his home on Basket Mountain where he raised livestock and farmed. In 1890 he was married to Elizabeth Lessor, who died in 1893. To this union were born two sons, LeRoy of Milton-Freewater, and Edwin of Umapine, who survive.

He also leaves a sister, Jennie E. Shelton, who has made her home with him for the past 45 years. The family moved to a ranch below Umapine in 1917, and after March's retirement in 1924 moved to Umapine, residing here a number of years before coming to Milton-Freewater.

Besides the two sons and his sister survivors include one brother, Fred E. March, Umapine; three grandchildren, Mrs. Joe (Beth) Miller of Santa Rosa, Calif., Mrs C.O. (Rowena) Hewitt, and Herbert L. March, both of Milton-Freewater. Five great grandchildren, one niece, and numerous nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 12, at 10:30 from Munselle's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Truman Robbins officiating. Mrs. Marville Zerba will be soloist and Mrs. J.H. Maxwell organist, with special numbers to be "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross'. Pallbearers will be Jasper Sams, Roy Hyatt, Bill Wood, Ed McDuffie, Dick Hayes, and Earl Frazier. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery.

Mrs Tillie March

MILTON-FREEWATER (Special) -- Mrs Matilda (Tillie) March, an area resident for 60 years died Saturday in a local nursing home. She was 84.

Mrs March was born Dec 9, 1883 near Joplin, Mo. Following her marriage to Charles Crawford in 1900 they moved to Weston in 1905 and then to Milton in 1910. mrs. March was a member of the First Christian Church in which she sang in the church choir an worked with the ladies aid. After Crawford's death she marrie Fred March of Umapine in 1930. He died in 1958.

Funeral services for Mrs.march will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Munselle-Rhodes Chapel withthe Rev. george Knox officiating. Interment will follow in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Mrs. March is survived by her daughters, MRs. Otha Schacht of Walla Walla and Mrs. Stanley (Lorraine) Floyd of San Jose, Calif.; a son, Fred March of Milton-Freewater; a brother, Elmer Cooper of Bristow, Okla. and her sisters, MRs. Sadie Dix of Bristow, and Mrs. Alice Fritz of Fort Morgan, Colo. Mrs. March is futher survived by 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Death Takes Ernest March

MILTON-FREEWATER -- Ernest March, 74, native of the county and a life-long resident, died at his home Sunday night after an extended illness.

March was born on Dry Creek Sept 21, 1883. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Dena March; a daughter, Mrs Henry Johnston, East Liverpool, Ohio; a son, Leo March, Milton-Freewater; a sister, Mrs. Florence Maestratti, San Jose, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday aternoon from a local chapel with burial in the IOOF cemetery.

Hulette March

Hulette March 83, died this morning in a Milton-Freewater nursing home.

He was born July 11, 1890, in Dry Creek near Weston. he farmed on Dry Creek and raised cattle until 1927 when he moved to Milton-Freewater. He continued farming and then became interested in the real estate business until ill health forced his retirement. He married Laura Warner in 1917 and she preceded him in death in 1947. He then married Mrs. Ida Fuller, who survives him, in Lewiston, Idaho in 1948. His parents were Henry and Jennie March, pioneers of this valley.

Mr. March was a member of the Milton Seventh-day Adventist Church and a former memeber of the Real Estate Agents Association.

Survivors include his wife Ida, at the home; his son, Harry March of San Jose, Calif.; his daughter, Mrs Virgil (Marjorie) Weathers of Adams, Ore.; his sister-in-law Dena March of Milton-Freewater; seven grandchildren. six great grandchildren. and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Laura March, wife of Hulette March of Milton, died Tuesday afternoon i a local hospital at the age of 54 years.

A resident of the valley more than 30 years. Mrs. March was a native of Kansas, where she was born July 8, 1892.

Besides her husband she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Alice Warner, a daughter, Mrs. Virgil Weathers, a son, Harry March and four grandchildren, all of Milton-Freewater.
