Immigration in 1839 was immense, coming chiefly from Missouri and Illinois. Among these were S. E. Lewis, J. D. Merrit, William Hewitt, Robert Porter, Henry Webster, William McDaniel, Ezra Hall, Hiram Hallowell, Isaac Martin, William Hosmer, William Kinney, Alfred Kinney, with their families; Samuel Yenawine, Thomas Harrison, Thomas Smith, Myron Patterson, C. C. Drake, Cornelius Kennedy, a Revolutionary soldier and the first pedagogue in the village; Briar Davis, Charles Davis, Newton Morris, and some others. The improvements included storehouses by J. F. Chapman and S. E. Lewis; a dwelling by J. D. Merritt, the Methodist church, etc., and the village began to bear the appearance of life and activity it soon after bore for a period of nearly ten years.

MARION TOWNSHIP (Township 106North, Range 13 West). -- A colony consisting of Alfred Kinney, Levi M. Phelps, Nathan S. Phelps, Eleazer Phelps, George Mills an a few others located, in April, 1854, in the neighborhood of what afterward became the village of Marion.  They arrived on Saturday and on Sunday held an outdoor religious service (there was no indoors yet), with a sermon by Rev. Predmore, from Iowa, which is claimed to have been the first sermon preached in the county.  J. W. Predmore, William Marquardt, Jacob Bonham, Lewis W. Wright, Philip H Kavanaugh, Timothy Twohey, George Allen, J. D. Campion and John Dooley settled the same year.  Mr. Allen was town treasurer eleven years.

Alfred Kinney was on e of the original settlers of the village of Marion, coming there in 1854.  He established the first store in the township and became a prominent and highly respected citizen. He died a number of years ago.

George V. Kinney, retired farmer, who for many years engaged in agricultural pursuits in Marion township, Olmsted county, was born in Pike county, Illinois, January 3, 1837, the second in a family of eleven children bron to the union of Alfred and Pamelia (Landrum) Kinney. The father, who was a carpenter and millwright by occupation, was a native of Vermont, his birth occurring January 25, 1811, but shortly after attaining his majority he came west to Pike county, Illinois, and was there married.  His wife was born in Kentucky, December 12, 1815.  In April 1854, Mr. Kinney and wife first came to Olmsted county. They were among the very first families to settle here and experienced all the trials and hardships incident to pioneer life, but the possessed courage and determination and little by little added to their first tract of land in section 36, Marion township, until they were one of the large land owners of the community.  The father was a Democrat in politics and was the first county treasuer to be elected.  He was also one of the founders of the Methodist Episcopal church at Marion, which was erected in 1859.  Mr. and Mrs. Kinney were of that sturdy pioneer stock which have so materially assisted in making our country the premier country of the world, and lived happily together on the home place in Marion township till death beckoned them.  The father passed away in 1879, aged sixty-eight years and three months, and the loss of so good a citizen and kind a friend was mourned generally throughout the county.

Early in life George V. Kinney attended the district schools and assisted his father in the work of the home farm. During the great Civil war he enlisted December 12, 1863, in Brackett's Minnesota battalion of cavalry and was with that command until May 19, 1866.  He served also in the Indian war under General Sibley. Mr. Kinney was first married August 4, 1861, To Ede Parish, of New Haven twonship, who was born and reared in Wisconisn, and by her had two children, nellie Whittlesey, of Minneapolis, and Ada Wilson, of Watertown, South Dakota.  His wife died February 13, 1865, in Butler county, Iowa, and on February 18, 1867, Mr. Kinney was united in marriage with Lucinda (Beech) Bragg, the daughter of Milton and Mary (Chandler) Beech, and the widow of Wesley Bragg.  Her farther was a farmer in Marion township, having moved here from Indiana in 1863, and resided in that locality until his death.  By Mrs. Kinney's first marriage solemnized June 12, 1856, three children were born; Louis, Milton and Mary, the latter two deceased, and by her marriage to Mr. Kinney four children were born: William, deceased; nathan L., Elizabeth, the wife of Frank Browning, and Agnes, the wife of Charles A. Nelson, of Predmore, Olmsted county, Minnesota.  Mr. Kinney has always been a Republican in his political views and is a member of Garfield Post, No. 44, of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Many members had brought guests, and a surprise was afforded by the presence of Mrs. Josephine Corliss Preston, who arrived with Mrs. C.N. Eaton of Waitsburg.

Mrs Preston, well-remembered by Walla Wallans for her prominence in educational work, had served as both county and state superintendent of schools, and received national recognition in her election to the presidency of the National Teacher's Association.  Now making her home on Vashon Island, Mrs PReston is visiting her sister, MRs F L Phelps of Milton Freewater.

WILLIAM A. CLARK, a dairy farmer, seven miles southwest of Walla walla, was born in Missouri August 10, 1850.  His father died when he was eight years old, and when he reached the age of fifteen he and his mother started across the plains with ox-teams to the west.  Mr. Clark, though so young, made the entire trip on foot, driving the oen all the way.  In their train were one hundred wagons, so that, though they were compelled to sustain a running fight with the Indian all through the journey, they were too strong to be closed in by their enemies.  They settled first on Dry Creek, this county, in the fall of 1865, rented land and began farming, but later they moved to Pine creek where they had bought a small place.

Having disposed of this shortly afterwards, they returned to Dry creek and purchased two hundred and sixty-five acres, which was their home until Mr. Clark bought his present forty-seven-and-one-half-acre tract.  He is also the owner of a quarter-section of land on Blue mountain, which he took as a homestead that he might have a pasture for his cattle, of which he has a fine band, all shorthorn Durham stock.  He gives the major part of his attention to the dairy business.  Mr. Clark has never been troubled in the least by Indians since settling in the valley, though during the war of 1878 he thought best to send his family to Walla Walla.  He himself remained on his farm.

Our subject has long been one of the representative men of his neighborhood, taking a very deep interest in everything which promised to promote the general welfare.  His interest in the cause of education is evinced by the fact that for nine years he was director in the Couse creek district.  He was married, in county, July 3, 1873, to Miss Eliza P. Kinney, a native of Minnesota, whose parents were pioneers of 1859.  They have seven children living: Eva, wife of J.L. Rogers; Myrtle, Willie, Louis, Elizabeth, Josephine, and one born January 16, 1901, not yet named; also four deceased, -- Edwin, Dora, Millie and Bessie.

Mr. Clark’s mother, Mrs. Cyntha Clark, was born in Madison county, Kentucky, January 7, 1811, and is still living and in good health, though over ninety years old.  At present she is residing with her daughter, Mrs. Mildred Swaggart, at Heppner, Oregon.  She is one of the earliest and most highly and uniformly respected pioneers of this section and is affectionately called “Grandma” by all her acquaintances far and near.  When the Methodist Episcopal church, South, she, though she had been reared in that denomination, withdrew her membership and joined the Baptist church, of which she has ever since been a faithful and consistent member.

Former Resident Dies in Spokane

Mrs. Alvia Valeria Kinney, former resident of Walla Walla who had been living in Spokane, died there Sunday. She was 69.

She was born Jan. 27, 1888 in Kansas.  Her husband, Lester P. Kinney, died Nov. 21, 1954.

She was the sister of Mrs. Anna Byers of Coal Valley, Ill., Mrs. Dan c. Putman of Spokane, Mrs. Minnie Peterson of Swedona, Ill., Mrs. Bertha Brinn of Rock Island, Ill., and of E. W. Fehr of Pendleton.  Also surviving are 20 nieces and nephews.

Funeral plans are not decided but services and interment will be in Walla Walla.

Mrs. Phelps of M-F is Stricken

MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore -- Mrs. Myrtia Corliss Phelps of Milton-Freewater died unexpectedly at her home Friday afternoon.  She was born in Rochester, Minn., and had been a resident here 51 years.

She was a member of the Christian Church and the Order of Eastern Star, Loyalty Chapter 65; the chapter's Past Matrons Club and the Elizabeth Bixby Chapter of the D.A.R., Vashon Island.

She is survived by a son, Donald Corliss Phelps of Olympia; a duaghter, Theo W. Evans of Oakland, California; a sister, Mrs. Josephine Corliss Preston of Vashon Island; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Christian Church with the Rev. Truman Robbins of the Christian Church and the Rev. Fred Greene of the Baptist Church officiating.  Loyallty Chapter, O.E.S. will conduct rites in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Mrs. Eva Rogers, Of Local Pioneer Family, Passes

Mrs. Eva Rogers, 937 Carrie, died at her home Monday. She was 78.

She was born in Milton April 2, 1878, a member of an old pioneer family in Walla Walla Valley. Her mother settled in College Place in 1859, and her father in Weston in 1865. Her mother's family, the Clarks, at one time owned much of the land in present-day College Place, including that where the Walla Walla College now stands.

Mrs. Rogers and her husband were married Dec. 4, 1898, in Weston, and farmed all their lives in the northwest and Creston, B. C. They moved to Walla Walla 13 years ago. There was a large family gathering for their golden anniversary in 1948, with family and friends present from Pendleton, La Grande and Twin Falls, Ida.

Mrs. Rogers was formerly active in lodge work, but had given it up in late years. She leaves her husband, Jared at home; a son, Jared Jr., of Milton-Freewater, two daughters, Mrs. William (Opal) Priest of Venice, Cailf. and Mrs. Stanley (Evelyn) Workman of St. David, Ariz; three sisters, Mrs Myrtle Bishop of Jerome, Ida., Mrs. Josephine Boyer of Baker, Ore., and Mrs. Florence Zerba of Milton-Freewater; two brothers, William Clark of Baker and Louis Clark of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Death Takes Jared Rogers

Jared Lot Rogers of 937 Carrie died in a local hospital Saturday.  He was 78 and had lived in Walla Walla for 13 years.

Born in Weston, Ore., on May 16, 1878, Rogers was a son of J.L. and Melissa Dudley Rogers, pioneers who both came to the West in 1851. He was the youngest of seven children raised on a farm near Weston.

he was married to Eva L. Clark of Milton-Freewater in Weston on Dec. 4, 1898.  Rogers was a business man and farmer, known familiarly to many in this area as "Lot" Rogers.  He and his wife moved to Walla Walla 13 years ago to retire.

The Rogers' golden wedding anniversary was celebrated here in 1948 and friends and members of the family came from as far as West Virginia for the occasion.  Mrs Rogers died Oct 1 of last year.  Rogers formerly was active in lodge work but had given it up in recent years.

Survivors include a son, Jared C. Rogers of Milton-Freewater; two daughters, Mrs. William (Opal) Priest of Venice, Calif., and Mrs. Stanley (Evelyn) Workman of St David, Ariz.; one sister, Mrs Ed (Linnie) Sauze of Walla Walla; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday from local chapel with interment in the family plot, Mountain View Cemetery.

Florence Zerba

MILTON-FREEWATER -- Florence Zerba, Route 1, died Wednesday at the Milton-Freewater Nursing home at the age of 75.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel in Milton-Freewater with the Rev. Richard Davidson of the First Christian Church officiating.  Concluding services and interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Friends may pay their respects prior to the funeral hour at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home.  Those who wish may make memorial contributions through the funeral home to the First Christian Church.

Mrs. Zerba was born Jan. 16, 1901, in Milton-Freewater, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Clark.  She has lived in the area all her life, attending schools in the Ferndale area and graduating from Walla Walla High School.

She was married in Clarkston to Everett Zerba Sept. 3, 1920. Zerba died in 1956.

Mrs. Zerba was a member of the First Christian Church was a charter member and past worthy matron of the Milton-Freewater chapter of the Order of Eastern Star; a member of the Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington and of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son, Clark Zerba, Milton Freewater; her daughter, Zona Dial, Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Josephine Boyer, Portland; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Family reunion honors Waitsburg woman

WAITSBURG – Olive M. Follett, Route 1, recently was honored at a family reunion held to celebrate her 88th birthday.

Mrs. Follett was born Oct. 15, 1888, at Juniper, Ore., one of 15 children born to Thomas and Louisa Conrad.  She was educated at Umapine.  The family reunion was held Sept 19 at Rieth, Ore.

Hosting the reunion were her son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Louise Forth of Rieth.  Those honoring her at the reunion were her children, Naomi Williams of Portland, Pat Lammey and Ila Parr of Pendleton, Glora Scott of Waitsburg and Bill Kinney of Walla Walla. Also attending were 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs Follett’s other two daughters, Gladys Williams of Lakeview, Calif., and Mildred Baker of Spokane were unable to attend.
