Page 4 of Early History of Milton-Freewater:

An Ireland came and stayed. When the three Ireland brothers left California’s gold fields for some place north, one of them, James, saw opportunity in the sage covered flats and rolling bunch grass hills of the Walla Walla. He settled there in 1860 on a section of land, later titled under a land grant patent, and began raising cattle. The tract of land in Ireland ownership began where the Milton library (former) now stands, extending East and North one mile in each direction. It is notable that part of that section has remained in Ireland ownership for 100 years.

James and his wife, Sarah (Ingle) Ireland, at one time operated the Cowl place as a way station to serve the stream of travelers moving between the mines of Eastern Oregon and Walla Walla. Quarters were often crowded and prices were high and paid in gold. The place was known as Ireland’s Crossing.

Three children were born to them, a girl, Elzora, and two boys, Ellis and George. The third generation of Ireland’s register as follows: Elzora married Charley Armstrong; to them was born a daughter, Grace, now Mrs. Mathewson of Walla Walla. Ellis married Clyde Crockett; their children were Pansy, Eldred, and Darrel Ireland.

George and Edith (Renick) were the parents of Dee, George, Howard, and Robert Ireland. Dee and Edith (Patton) Ireland had one child. George and Lorraine (Rogers) had three children. Howard and Daglin. Robert and Neva (Packard).

Excerpt from the Democratic State Journal 1883-1884, Dayton, Oregon

James Ireland pioneered Milton. He saw California before the gold rush after coming from Illinois. He came to where Milton now is in Oregon to establish a roadhouse at a point on the Oregon Road known as Ireland's Crossing. After an adventurous life, he settled down in the early 60's. He acquired much property. First names of his family are prominent markings on various roads thereabouts.

Sarah E McIntyre, Pioneer Woman Tells Experience

Milton-Eagle (1929)

Milton Eagle - May 22, 1924

Mrs. Sarah E. (Ingle) McIntyre

It is striking to think that in braving the dangers and hardships of the pioneer west, that it is not alone to the men of brawn and grit that we must lay our tributes of honor and praise, but the the gentler, and sometimes those considered of the weaker sex, tho this is only from a physical point of view for the women were often as courageous, resourceful and persistent, and to them an equal measure of the praise for the wonderful achievements is due. Mrs. S.E. McIntyre was born in Edgar County, ILL, in 1862. When 18 years of age she came with her parents, by ox team, in a train of 800 wagons to the west. The toilsome journey required six months for completion, and her father, Elijah Ingle, settled 62 years ago on the state line on the well known Ingle place.

She was married to James Ireland in 1864 by whom she had three children; Ellis, George T. and Mrs. Elzora Armstrong. Her husband took a homestead of 160 acres of what is now the greater part of Milton city limits, which he used as pasture for his extensive herd of cattle.

Mr. Ireland died in 1882 and Mrs. Ireland remained a widow for ten years and was then married to L.J. McIntyre in July 1892. In those early days they had many scares from the Indians, and only the large size of the train saved its members from the horrors of Indian depredations, as trains both before and behind them of lesser importance.

She lived in Milton in 1878 during the war scare here when the people of Pendleton and that vicinity all fled to the fort at Walla Walla. At that time she lived near the bridge at Miller's Mill and day and night she could hear the wagons rumbling over the bridge on their way to the fort. Many nights the men stood guard on the hills south and west of Milton fearing at any time that they might see the marauding band. Mrs. McIntyre well remembers when the old Methodist parsonage, which has been moved near the river on George St., was used for school, church and public gatherings. She now lives at her beautiful home on George St. in peaceful retirement and cultivates her flower and vegetable gardens, the limits of which diminish as the years draw on.

4. GEORGE THOMAS2 IRELAND (JAMES1) was born 05 Dec 1870 in Milton Freewater, Oregon, and died 22 Sep 1949 in Umatilla, Oregon27. He married EDITH MAY RENICK 27 Dec 1896 in Pendleton, Umatilla, Oregon, daughter of ALEXANDER RENICK and VERLINDA RAY. She was born 29 Feb 1876 in Healdsburg, California, and died 21 Apr 1941 in Walla Walla, Washington28.

Notes for GEORGE THOMAS IRELAND:

June 1933

Native of Milton Has Seen Many Hair-Raising Incidents

Himself native-born and the son of one of the very first comers to the Milton country, George Ireland; more familiarly known as "Paddy", is in every sense a pure-blooded Oregonian of pioneer stock. Today, in his native town, county and state, he can look back and muse on past history with appreciation and understanding which can come only to one who has lived his life in that community.

Born in Milton in 1870, Ireland is thoroughly familiar with the town's development, and lived through the transition from a village of more saloons than churches to its present atmosphere of culture and law observance. He witnessed gunfights in which bad hombres "got their man for breakfast; and has seen the gruesome aftermath of vigilante lynching.

Gunfight Was Fatal

Of one breakfast gunfight, he is much aware. He had been sent, as a lad, to market for breakfast meat when he stumbled into a gun battle. The victim was hastily jammed into a much-too small wooden box and carried to a nearby field for burial without the aid of clergy. Ireland remembers the details of that episode to this day.

On another occasion, while riding a stage from Pendleton, the driver wheeled his horses off the beaten trail near Adams and drove to a nearby field where Ireland and the passengers were allowed to behold the gruesome consequences of a combination of things like a wayward man, a rope, a vigilante gang and a fence-rail tripod.

Father Was of Early West

His father, James Ireland, was one of the men who saw California before the gold rush of '49. He had come out from Illinois, tarried in California and come to where Milton now is to establish a road house at a point on the Old Oregon Trail known as Ireland's Crossing where Det Harris' home now stands; caught the lure of the Idaho gold rush in the early 60's; returned to Milton and there settled down after an adventurous life on trail and in gold fields. The senior member of the family acquired considerable property, both stock and lands.

Ireland's addition to Milton was once owned by him, and it is fitting that several streets of Milton are named after children of the Ireland patriarch, and friends of him. Elsora, Ellis and George streets, as now known were named for the James Ireland children. In recent months, it may be stated here, Elanora Armstrong, long a resident of Ferndale, and Ellis Ireland, a resident of Seattle, have passed on, leaving only George.

Jackson Street was named after a cousin, who was one of the first deputy sheriffs of Umatilla County. Martin Williams is another member of the family honored by street names. Martin was both County Judge and Sheriff at early dates.

Of the youth, George remembers well his unsuccessful attempts to learn the printer's trade in early newspaper offices, and he knew and "deviled" under the late Winn Brown.

Helped Build Blalock Flume

Another venture of his early life was when he helped build the now historic but once important Blalock Flume. That undertaking was rated then, much as some vast irrigation project might rate now. It was 21 miles long, with a branch leading up the mountain side of seven miles, and transported lumber, logs, wood ties from the Blalock Mountain district into Milton; there to be distributed to the trade. Walla Walla patronized it heavily. Skidway and flumes carried the material down the mountain site to the river bottom where a big head of water was turned into the V-shaped wooden flume. On the swift current the logs wound be carried with great speed to their destination. Some, there were, who got thrills out of riding the timber down the flume at top speed. Sim Barnes of Weston is one who recalls the sport he and his pals frequently enjoyed. Water had to be plentiful to do that trick; often the "head" was insufficient and material moved slowly or piled up in jams. It was around 1881 or shortly thereafter that Ireland worked on the construction and J.M.P. Snider was the foreman in charge. The flume was operated but a few years.

First Train Trip Taken

To have ridden on the first train which ran from Milton to Blue Mountain Station, and to have partaken of the picnic dinner which followed the excitement of that adventure, are also among his cherished episodes.

Ireland married Edith Renick, whose mother was in the famous "Donahue Party." Mrs. Ireland's mother's family wagon was pulled out of the Donahue train to hurry on ahead, and this escaped the fate which befell the main Donahue train.

Four Children in Family

Mr. and Mrs. Ireland have reared a family of four children; George, now a printer on Mare Island; Dee Ireland of Milton; Howard Ireland of Portland, and Robert, a 1937 graduate of Mac-Hi. Robert's school career completed a 27-year span in which a member of the Ireland family has been continuously in the Milton Schools.

During a long and active life Ireland has been socially and commercially associated with a group of men, who like himself, having been born either in Milton or came there at approximately that time - the early 70's. The group have been neighbors, pals and cronies down though the years, and the list includes such pioneers as William and James Frazier, Charles Spence, G.A. Cowl, Bennie Osborne, William Miller, Charles Demaris, John and Joe Irons, Eli Tolen, John Ross, Bob Chapman, Sam Atkins and many others.

50 YEARS AGO - December 9, 1937

The art exhibit sponsored by the grade schools of Milton-Freewater will be held in the banquet room of City Hall Dec. 13-15. The exhibit consists of 150 reproductions of the works of famous artists and promises to be one of unusual merit.

Last week Mr. and Mrs. Dee Ireland moved into their recently completed home on George Street. It is interesting to note that the land on which the house stands is a part of the original Ireland Homestead which was filed by James Ireland, Dee Ireland's grandfather. Dee is the third generation to own the property and has in his possession, the original deed to the property, dated May 20, 1862, and signed by Ulysses S. Grant, President of the United States.

The homestead claim was the 32nd to be filed at the La Grand Land Office and is recorded in Volume One, Page 31 of the last office records. The document is in a splendid state of preservation and though the paper is somewhat yellowed with age, the ink is not faded.
