Notes for PHILO HOPSON:

A handwritten letter in file dated Aug. 1, 1969

Dear Russell,

Am enclosing a check for $35.00 for a step for "The Hopson Family". As near as Maree and I can determine the family moved to Milton in 1879 from Weston. We don't know how long they were in Weston or when they arrived in Oregon. They did come from Missouri by Wagon Train.

Perhaps Mr. Caverhill would be able to get more information if needed. I do know Mama had a book (sort of Who's Who of Umatilla County) that she loaned during the Centennial and it was not returned to her. It had an article about Dad's father in it. Would sure like to have had it.

Would also like to do something about Grandpa Edwards; have contacted Arline (Mrs. Kelly Sheldon) and she is interested also.

I think they came to Milton from Echo in the 1890's. Could you hold a step for them until we can find out more? Would appreciate it if you would let me know.

Dad remains about the same but being in a rest home is miserable for him. He gets so lonesome and lives in the past a great deal. He was very interested in your project and that if anyone could get information it was Mr. Caverhill.

Thanks for remembering us.

Sincerely

Bethene

Notes for WILLIAM CECIL HOPSON:

In file at museum, WHO'S WHO IN THE WALLA WALLA VALLEY - CA.1914

H.PC. HOPSON

He was born in Oregon (!878) and educated partly in Milton and partly in Quincey, ILL. He is owner of a beautiful 60-acre commercial orchard south of Milton, and a 32-acre tract largely devoted to his nursery business three miles north of Freewater.

On his home tract he has ten 45-year old apple trees which are bearing an average of 30 to 50 boxes each, annually, one recent crop from one tree selling for $77.00.

Mr. Hopson has in the past been a prize winner in the Walla Walla and Pendleton fairs, and his orchard is a well known beauty spot.

He is possessed of qualities which brought him a large circle of friends and well wishing acquaintances; is of the highest personal standing, successful in business, and public spirited. At one time he was manager of the Fruit Growers' Union, and his high business qualifications have caused him to be regarded as one of the foremost of the younger men devoted to horticultural pursuits.

Bank of Milton Robbery - November 1893

HOPSON TELLS OF EARLY DAY BANK - by W.C. Hopson

In file; and later a condensed story of the article in the Valley Herald as follows:

FEBRUARY 22, 1973

IT HAPPENED . . . In Old Milton-Freewater - Published by request.

About 1890 a bank, the Bank of Milton was opened for business. It was owned by a private banking group composed of N.A. Davis, E.J. Davis, and a man by the name of Williams who came from Kansas. N.A. Davis was the first cashier.

By 1893 the bank was incorporated under the same name with Adelbert Hopson Pres.; Henry L. Frazier Vice Pres.; Directors Wm. Nichols, William Talbert and A.M. Elam; Cashier N.A. Davis; Clerk Wm. Hopson.

On Friday, November 13, 1893 at 3 p.m. in a heavy fog, two men entered the bank for money. They didn't draw checks on the bank. They drew six-shooters on the bankers and fired two shots without warning. N.A. Davis wen down from concussion; A. Hopson with a bullet through his left arm and side. The young clerk, Wm. Hopson was ordered to "shove out the money." He did. The robbers were in a hurry and Hopson was nervous. In the confusion that followed, the bandits got away with $874.25, mostly gold, but left $110.00 in 5 and 10 dollar gold pieces scattered on the counter and floor. A third man was holding the horses in the alley. All three got away. They were never caught, but their horses were found later in a barn near Echo. At the time of the robbery, there was less than $12,000 on deposit in the bank. After the holdup, there was $1,200 left in fold and currency to carry on the business.

Umatilla County OR Archives Biographies.....Killgore, J. R. November 8, 1873 -

Author: Colonel William Parsons

J. R. KILLGORE

This prominent and gifted young business man, although but just

beginning the years of life, has already achieved a success that speaks in the

highest terms of his ability, both in the executive and the financial line,

having thus early demonstrated his fitness to take rank with the leading

business men of this part of the state.

He was born in Missouri on November 8, 1873, to J. F. and Mary J.

Killgore, but was removed when a child to this county by his parents, and

received here his educational training and business discipline, thus being,

practically, a product of Umatilla county and a son of which she may well be

proud. After finishing his scholastic training he entered the Farmers’ Bank

of Weston as assistant cashier, in which capacity he showed such marked

industry and insight into the intricate details of financiering, together with

sterling worth and integrity, that he soon made himself indispensable to the

institution and was installed as cashier, which position he now fills with

efficiency and faithfulness, displaying an acumen and keen foresight

accompanied with a fine practical judgment, that basis of all genuine

financiering. He is also stockholder in the bank and owns three hundred and

twenty acres of fine land close to town.

His marriage occurred on October 10, 1900, when Miss Elsie M.,

daughter of Adelbert and Roxie Hopson, became his bride. Mr. Killgore

affiliates with the I. O. O. F., and the Woodmen of the World of Weston. He is

popular among his fellows and has frequently been urged to enter politics, but

thus far has positively refused to allow his name to be used in that

capacity. If intrinsic worth and past success, achieved by wisely directed

effort, are sufficient to prognosticate the future of a business man, then we

predict a brilliant career for this rising and worthy representative

financier.

CALTECH ALUMNI REVIEW

Dear Mr. Editor: I am enclosing several news items about Cal-Tech alumni in Colorado which I thought you might like to print in the next issue of the Alumni Review. I wish to call particular attention to the news item in regard to the election of Cecil Killgore as Secretary-Treasurer of the Colorado Chapter of Cal-Tech Alumni. Will you please see that he is listed on the alumni records as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Colorado Alumni Chapter? His ad- dress is "U. S. Bureau of Reclamation, Denver, Colorado." He succeeds the writer in the office of Secretary-Treasurer; I have held that office for the past several years. Mr. Killgore is very capable, and I predict that he will be a good man for the job.
