MARIE DORION AND THE TRAIL OF THE PIONEERS
Two German immigrants were married in Peoria, Ill., and little did they know that their lives were to be pervaded by the pioneer spirit and the dangers of the frontier west and Midwest. Charles William Harder, born in Mechlenberg, Germany and his wife Margreta of Alsace Lorraine-Wegenheim, homesteaded land where the Yates Center now stands in southeast Kansas, and while there, Margreta bore ten children.
The family, fearing the much-dreaded disease of malaria and the extreme lawlessness existing during Reconstruction after the Civil War, left for the west by wagon train in 1877. It was an exciting journey for the Harder family, as the wagon train, comprised of more that 60 vehicles, picked up Chief Yellow Hawk of the UmatillaTribe and took him into hiding. It was during the period of the Bannock-Umatilla Indian Wars and travel for the wagon train was quite hazardous. When the party arrived in the Walla Walla Valley, it was found that black diphtheria had set in among the residents and the pioneers had to turn around and make a circular route to the north through Waitsburg, Washington and settle in Idaho near where the Potlach Lumber Company now stands. An eleventh child, Benjamin, was born to the Harder family, while in Idaho.
Due to extreme winter weather conditions, the group settled in Huntsville, Washington, where they were instrumental in building the town’s first flour mill in 1880.
Feeling restless once more and partial to the Milton-Freewater area, the Harder family traveled to Dry Creek in 1883. Charles farmed land in the area until his death. A grandson, Harold Harder, now resides in the original Harder home

HISTORY OF ALLEN AND WOODSON COUNTIES, KANSAS. 671
CHARLES F. HARDER.
CHARLES F. HARDER, of Yates Center, was born in the village of Jagzow, Kreis, Anklam, Germany, November 18, 1844. His father, Charles H. Harder, was also a native of the same country and in early life was a shepherd but afterward became proprietor of a hotel. He spent eight years in Kansas in the latter portion of his life and died in 1883, at the age of eighty-four. In his family were thirteen children, those now in the United States being William, of Milton, Oregon; Ferdinand, a resident of Portland, Oregon; Albert, of Iola, Kas.; Henrietta, the wife of August Meyer, of Lake View, Ia., and Charles F.
The subject of this sketch acquired a good education in the schools of Germany, and at the age of twenty years he left home, starting out to make his own way in the world. Believing that better opportunities were afforded young men in America, he sailed for the United States in 1864, and located first in Livingston County, Ill., where he remained until coming to Kansas in February, 1869. Taking up his abode in Woodson County he was at first employed by the month as a farm hand, but afterward secured a homestead of his own which he owned until the time of his marriage, when he disposed of that property and removed to his wife's farm. He has since engaged in the raising of stock and grain and in his pastures are seen good grades of cattle, horses and hogs, while his fields give promise of bounteous harvests.
In September, 1869, Mr. Harder was united in marriage to Mrs. Theresa Stockebrand, a daughter of Marquis Brockmann, whose family numbered five children, only two of whom came to the United States. Her people resided in the city of Kiel, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Mrs. Harder was first married to August Stockebrand, a brother of William and Ernest Stockebrand, and by her first union she had five children, August, Mary, the wife of Louis Brodmann; Henry; Annie, wife of John Donnerberg, and Emil. All are residents of Woodson County. Five children grace the union of Mr. and Mrs. Harder, namely: Augusta, the wife of William Lauber; Martha, wife of Henry Kruger; Franz and Lizzie, at home, and Pauline, wife of William Toedman.
Since becoming an American citizen Mr. Harder has supported the Republican party when questions of state and national importance have been involved, but at local elections, where no issue is before the people, sometimes votes independently. He is a local preacher and a member of the Evangelical association with which his family are also connected. For more than thirty years he has resided in Woodson County and is thoroughly identified with his region, its interests and upbuilding, ever lending his aid to all measures for the public good. From the little German home he came to America, and in the land of the free he found the opportunity he sought to work his way upward to a position of affluence.

An illustrated history of Umatilla County, page 468
ROBERT G STILL—The prominent agriculturist and esteemed citizen whose name initiates this paragraph, and who has wrought with wisdom and enterprise in the industrial development of this county for nearly twenty years, has achieved an enviable success and demonstrated his abilities and worthiness in a most satisfactory manner.
His birth occurred in the Dominion of Canada on July 9, 1861, and in that land he was educated and passed his minority. In 1870 he came with his parents, Jonh and Agnes (Turnbull) Still to Texas, remaining there but three years, when he continued west to this county. Here he selected and purchased four hundred acres of fertile land, where he now lives, four miles souithwest from Milton. To the cultivation and improvement of this fine estate he has devoted himself with energy and assiduity ever since, receiving the proper reward of his thrift and wisely directed efforts. His farm is well improved, wisely laid out and carefully kept. He has good substantial buildings and an elegant residence. He practices the diversified plan of farming, believing it to be the best. In addition to the care of his estate he operates a steam thresher during the harvest season, and has charge of the Bates warehouse, in which he owns a half interest.
Mr Still was married to Miss Margaret, daughter of C. W. and Margaret Harder, on December 21, 1887. To them have been born the following children: Edith L., Claude R. and Lloyd W. Mr Still and wife are members of the Frist Congregational church in Milton, being active in the interests of their faith. He is also affiliated with the A.O.U. W. and the Pioneers of the Pacific, both at Milton. Mr Still is a man who has gained and holds the esteem and confidence of his fellows having shown himself worthy of the same in his entire career in this county.

MARIE DORION AND THE TRAIL OF THE PIONEERS
Robert George Still came to the Dry Creek area with his family in the 1880’s, where two of his older brothers had homesteaded in 1881.
His family had lived at Orangeville, Canada on land purchased for a Scottish settlement.
In 1883, Still purchased land on Dry Creek. During the same year, he married Margreta Harder. Still later served as president of the Valley National Bank between 1932-1944. He died in 1948.
His wife, Margreta, had ridden beside her father’s wagon trail in 1878 when she was 12 years old. She was the daughter of Charles W. Harder another early pioneer of the area.
The couple raised 3 children; Claude, who died in the 1st World War, Edith Gray, who resides at her home at 1221 South Mill, and Lloyd Wilbur, living in Oroville, CA.
The name ‘Still’ comes from a gaelic name in Scotland – Stewart Claw.
