Subject: Your research re children of Moses Ferguson
To: seadogor@casco.net
I was conducting an internet search and happened across your reference to William Ferguson and Margaret Henry (your notations as William being son of Moses). While your references do not seem to match our family history exactly, I was intrigued by the similarity of reference to "Gidion" as one of the sons. So, I thought that I would provide you with what our family book states about a (the?) William Ferguson/Margaret Henry marriage:
‘William Ferguson married Margaret Henry of the famous Henry family in Virginia. To this union was born seven children: Marion, Samuel Huston, William Tell, Gideon Blackburn (1826-1877), Joan who wed Elisha Alexander, Mary, and Martha who wed William Kates. The family moved on into what later became West Virginia, where Gideon Blackburn Ferguson was born. The family had slaves, and were therefore unpopular in their new home and we find them moving on to McMinn County, Tennessee.
Gideon Blackburn Ferguson, here in McMinn County, Tennessee, met and married Frances Marian Hankins (1823 – 1906)(See Hankins Family). They moved to Holden, Missouri, where Albert Commodore was born in 1857. Here the family continued their sympathetic attitude with slave owners, but slavery was not popular in Holden, so the good people of Holden burned the Ferguson home and escorted them to the Kansas State Line and told them to keep moving. This they did, settling in Greely, Kansas. To the Union of Gideon Blackburn and Francis were born seven children. Three died in infancy – Laura, Janet, and Theodore, who were buried with their father in Greely; John was a victim of white swelling and died in Montpelier, Indiana, and is buried with his brother, Albert, in Ossian; Jeannette who married James Fryback is buried at Murray, Indiana; Nancy who married Paul Lamb is buried at Peru, Kansas. The mother, Frances Hankins Ferguson is buried at Union Town Cemetery in Wells County (Indiana). In 1882 the family moved to Uniondale, Indiana.
Albert Commodore Ferguson went back to Kansas and returned to Uniondale, Indiana in 1885. How he met Nellie Dailey we do not know, but they were married October 5, 1887. To this union was born five children: Gladys, Dale (my grandfather – born 12/23/1891), Wayne, Dule, and Jess
-------
I will stop with the family line here. I thought you might be interested, as your tree referenced the William Ferguson/Margaret Henry marriage and seemed to mention "Gidion". Your tree indicates that William’s father was Moses. Our family book indicates that William was the son of William Tell Ferguson, but my grandfather’s notes are not truly convincing in that regard…his reference to William Tell Ferguson states: "We know that a William Tell Ferguson came from County Clair Ireland with his wife and settled in Lancaster County, Virginia, in the early part of the 18th century. We know that there was at least one child, William, born in Lancaster County, Virginia." If William Tell came to Virginia in the early 18th Century, then it does not seem reasonable that William Tell was the father of William, as William (married to Margaret Henry) was father of Gideon Blackburn....born 1826. The family book is very direct with respect to the children of William Ferguson and Margaret Henry….it seems a little sketchy with the dates on earlier lineage.
Anyway, thought that you might be interested.

This was one of the first twonships organized, being the last one of the four that included all the county in 1835, but it may be said it is about the latest township in the county, for, of all the improvements and general wealth, none, comparatively speaking, existed before the war. no settlers crossed the Blackwater previous to 1830, an the family of Fergusons were about the first to cross and settle in what is now the wester part of Madison twonship.
In 1855, there were no setlements beween the present site of Holden and Isaac Hanna's, which latter place is about fifty or a hundred yards south of the southern township line. Most of the settlers lived north of the present site of Holden and a few west. These settlers lived near the two branches of Pin Oak and were very few in number.
Among the early settlers may be mentioned: Samuel and Aaron Ferguson, James Bradley, William Davidson, Squire A. B. Hamilton, P. H. Ray, Archy Ray, and their father Hugh Ray, Moses Tapscott, August Demasters, Squire J. G. Doyle, Matthew Cummings, William Cummings, Sanford Cummings, Joseph Mason, John Windsor, Reuben Fox, John Utt, Thomas Tapscott, G. Hays, Joseph Christian, Jacob Sahms, Jacob Beck, Charles S. Pleasant Ferguson is engaged in general farming and stock-raising on section 31, township 46, range 27, Johnson County, and his broad fields comprise something over five hundred acres, located in on of the most fertile and beautiful farming districts in the state. The place is well improved with good buildings, fences and other accessories, which make it a model farm of the period. The proprietor is a progressive and practical agriculturist, keeping in touch with the latest improvements and methods of conducting farm. Within his hospitable doors the stranger and friend alike always find a warm welcome, and it is ever with regret that they turn away.
Samuel ferguson, the father of our subject, was born in Lincoln County, N. C., in 1791, being the eldest of fourteen children, whose parents were Moses and Elizabeth (Cox) Ferguson. All of the brothers and sisters live to maturity and all married and reared families with the exception of one daughter, who remained single. Shortly after his marriage with Sarah Moonie, Samuel Ferguson, with his bride, removed to Rhea County, Tenn., and for fourteen years made his home in that locality, his occupation in the mean time being that of brick-laying. At the expiration of that period he decided to move to Missouri, and in 1831 settled in Lafayette County, where he remained only a short time, thence coming to Johnson County. He located on a farm about one mile west of our subject's present home, and was numbered among the few pioneers then to be found in this region. The nearest market of any size was at Lexington, about forty-two miles distant. When the first court convened, April 13, 1835, there were hardly enough men in the county to properly conduct affairs. Judge Amos Horn presided, with Uriel Murray and Dr. Robert Rankin acting as Associate Judges. The Court was held on the old Nicholas Houts Farm, at Columbus, under some elm trees, one of which is still standing. Samuel Ferguson continued to dwell in this county until his death, which occurred in 1857. His wife came of one of the first and most wealthy families of North Carolina, they being slave-holders. She was born in 1795, and lived to the good old age of fourscore years. Moses Ferguson, the father of Samuel, was the yougest of four brothers, who, with true loyalty to the Government, fought in her defense during the Revolutionary War.
The birth of our subject occurred in this county, October 8, 1833. he is one of ten children and is now one of three who survive, the others being Charles S. and Mary. His early training was a practical and thorough one, his hardships only serving to bring out the latent manliness of his character. He lived with his parents until he was twenty-seven years of age, giving his assistance to the management of the farm.
March 4, 1859, our subject and Jane, daughter of William and Lucy (Hill) Harmon, all natives of Virginia, were united in marriage. the Harmon family had moved to Cooper County, Mo., about 1835, and later came to this county. mrs. Ferguson is one of six children, three of whom are still living. Her grandmother, Lucy Hill was an own sister of Thomas Jefferson, and her mother, whose maiden name was Lucy Hill, was a cousin, three or four times removed, of Daniel Webster, and has spent many a happy hour with him.
Soon after his marriage Mr. Ferguson moved to his present farm, and since that time has been engaged in its development. He can recall many interesting experiences of life on the frontier during his boyhood, when these prairies abounded with wolves, wild cats, panthers, deer, turkeys, and bear. Though he commenced his independent career on an humble scale, he prospered, and, as his means increased, added to his original farm various tracts of land, until it has reached its present large proportions. His sons, Charles P. and James F., are still at home, and are of material assistance to him on the old homestead. They are both promising young men, and each received a good education, which was completed at the State Normal. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson have lost two children, and the others are Naomi A. and Mary J. Naomi is the wife of J.L. Kirkpatrick, a prominent farmer of this county, and they have two bright boys. mary J. attended the Christian University at Nevada, Mo., and afterwards was a student at St. Celia College at Holden, MO.
On Political questions Mr. Ferguson is always found to be on the side of the Democracy. His membership with the Methodist Church South dates back to 1845, and he is justly considered one of the pillars in the congregation.

13. JAMES MONROE3 FERGUSON (AARON2, MOSES1) was born 04 Apr 1844 in Johnson county, Missouri, and died 09 Apr 1921 in Pendleton, Umatilla, OR. He married MARY M. MARQUIS 14 Dec 1865 in Lawrence, Kansas. She was born Oct 1850 in Missouri, and died in abt 1962.
Notes for JAMES MONROE FERGUSON:
An illustrated history of Umatilla County was found on page: 407
JAMES M. FERGUSON – One of the largest real-estate owners, a leading agriculturist, and prominent citizen of Umatilla county. Mr. Ferguson has a reputation for industry and uprightness, together with good financial ability, which he justly merits in every respect, while socially he is pleasantly distinguished.
He was born in Johnson county, Missouri, on April 4, 1844, where he lived until after he had attained to his majority, receiving a good education in the public schools of that place. His father was a prosperous farmer and he was occupied in general farming and stock-raising with him until he enlisted in the Twelfth Kansas Infantry, Company E, under Captain A. J. Jennings, on August 10, 1863. From this time until the close of the war he was in continuous service, participating in the battle of Jenning’s Ferry and numerous skirmishes with bushwackers and Indians, being stationed much of the time on the border of the Cherokee Nation. He was mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas, on June 30, 1865, with the rank of corporal. He immediately went to Lawrence, Kansas, and rented a farm for two years. At this place on December 14, 1865, he was married to Miss Mary M. Marquis, a native of Missouri. In 1867 he returned to the old home place and rented it for two years, after which he moved to Bates county in the same state and purchased one hundred and twenty acres of land, which he farmed until 1878, when he sold it and came west across the plains with teams, in a train of twenty-three wagons. It was during the time of the Indian outbreak so well remembered in this county, but the train was not once molested, although the citizens were all in arms when they arrived at Adams, where they located. August 7 was the date of his arrival here and soon after he bought a quarter section on Wild Horse creek, later adding a section more, to the cultivation and improvement of which he devoted his attention with assiduity until 1893, when he sold it and purchased his present fine domain of over one thousand acres of fine wheat land, situated near Adams. Since this he has moved into Pendleton, owning a tasty and comfortable home at the corner of Lewis and Long streets, where he lives, being occupied with superintending his estate.
He has five children: William S., on the farm; Elmer E., a physician and surgeon at The Dallas; Ida E., married to George E. Peringer, of Pendleton; Laura A., wife of Thomas A. Lieuallen of Adams; May, at home with her parents. Mrs. Ferguson and the four elder children accompanied her husband in their trip across the plains. The oldest son is a graduate from the law department of the University of Michigan and has practiced for six years, but finds an agricultural life more congenial to his tastes, being occupied at the present with the oversight of his father’s large estate. Elmer E. graduated from the Rush Medical College, of Chicago, later taking post-graduate courses in Chicago, Philadelphia and New York, since which time he has been achieving a brilliant success in the practice of medicine.
Mr. Ferguson is a member of Adams Lodge, No. 74, I.O.O.F., and of the Kit Carson Post, G.A.R. In the quiet retreat of his cosy home, with the vista of an active and faithful life brought into relief by the bright memories of the past, with the oversight of his estates to give zest to his enjoyment, surrounded on every hand with friends, cherished by a loving family, this worthy veteran is passing the golden years of his life in ideal happiness and enjoyment, beneath the flag he bravely defended on the fields of blood, when rank treason’s hand would have torn its unsullied folds from Freedom’s staff.

Taking charge of 20 wagons, J. M. Ferguson arrived in July of 1878 in Pendleton. He and his wife then took up homesteading near Adams, raising primarily a wheat crop. In 1893, Ferguson retired and sold his holdings.
Five children were born to the Ferguson’s. Two grandchildren are currently living in the area. They are E. L. Ferguson of Milton-Freewater and Otis Lieuallen of Adams.

Jasper N Ferguson, County surveyor; section 3, Jackson township; postoffice, Kingsville. Mr. Ferguson is a self-made man, having battled on to success, an honored and highly respectable citizen, through his own unaided abilities an what he is he owes to his unerring perseverance. He was born April 15, 1823, in Ray county, East Tennessee. When but six years of age he moved with his parents to Lafayette county, Missouri. In 1830, some four years prior to the organization of Johnson county, his father moved into the territory now known by that name, and settled in the region then termed the Blackwater county. His father, John C. Ferguson, in 1830, erected what he said was the twelfth house in the county. In 1854 he moved eight or nine miles father westward to a farm known as the old James farm, of 180 acres, which he bought, and lived there until his death which occurred August 10, 1857. His wife died September 1861. He was born, June 21, 1797; his wife January, 1798. The were both natives of North Carolina, Lincoln county. Her maiden name was Sarah Falls and they were married in 1820. They had ten children, of which our subject was the second, and their births respectively occurred in regular alternate order, commencing witht he year 1821 and continuing to 1839. Our hero commenced life for himself about the year 1844, when he was twenty years of age. He commenced by learning carpentry and wagon making. In 1846 he took a trip on horseback with his father to East Tennessee, and extended thre trip to Lincoln county, North Carolina, his father's birth place. When he came back he attended the common schools for a time, and after attending a grammar school taught by Rev. David Hogan, of t he C.P. curch, at Blackwatertown, he commenced the career of teacher. He taught both in Johnson and Lafayette counties. In 1848 he attended Goshen's male and female academy, at Pleasant Hill, Cass county, Missouri. In 1850 he attended high school, at Chapel Hill, taught by A.W. Ridings. Thus he continued going to school and teaching until 1852, when he married Miss Mary E. Cheatham, a native of Adair county, Kentucky. She was born January 15, 1829. By this union seven children were born, as follows: Emma A., Sarah J., Thomas E., Alice M., Mary E., John B. and Nanna. In 1852 mr. Ferguson was appointed surveyor of Johnson county by the governor, to fill a vacancy in that office, caused by the resignation of John Givens, surveyor elect. Served as deputy surveyor under A. M. Perry from 1856 to 1860; also Gallaher was successor, under whom Mr. Ferguson served as deputy surveyor. In 1872 Mr. Ferguson was elected by the democratic party surveyor of Johnson county, an re-elected by the same party in 1876 and 1880, which office he now holds in connection with that of ex-officio road and bridge commissioner.

WILLIAM S. FERGUSON
William F. Ferguson, who throughout his life has successfully engaged in farming and is now living at Athena, was born near Holden, Johnson county, Missouri, July 1, 1867, a son of James M. and Mary M. (Marquis) Ferguson. The father was born on the 4th of April, 1844, in Missouri, and the mother was a native of Lawrence, Kansas. The boyhood of James M. Ferguson was spent in Missouri, in which state his marriage later took place. In 1862 James M. Ferguson enlisted in the Union army, in Company E, Twelfth Kansas Volunteer Infantry, under command of General Steel, and he was active in many of the important battles of the war throughout Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. In 1865 he was mustered out in Missouri. He then went to Kansas, where he was married in December of the same year, and he engaged in farming for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson later removed to Bates county, Missouri, where they farmed until 1878, when they came west, arriving in Umatilla county on the 8th of August, that year. They settled four miles from where Adams now stands, this location being at that time a wild open prairie. It was all stock country and Pendleton was the trading point. James M. Ferguson obtained some land on the Northern Pacific branch, squatters rights, which he improved, later sold and removed to near Adams, where he purchased one hundred and sixty acres, to which he added until he had eight hundred acres of well improved land. In 1893 he sold his ranch and moved to Pendleton and here lived retired until he was seventy-seven years of age, when his death occurred on the 9th of April 1921. The mother is living, being seventy-two years of age. mr Ferguson was a stanch republican and maintained an interest in all of the community affairs. He was a representative citizen of Pendleton, as is his widow.
William S. Ferguson left Missouri with his parents when he was but ten years of age and received his education in the public schools of Umatilla county. In 1888 he entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he took a two year course, and after putting his textbooks aside he returned to Umatilla county and leased land. but in 1898 began buying. He is now in possession of twelve hundred and eighty acres of wheat land in the vicinity of Athena and throughout Umatilla county.
Mr. Ferguson has been twice married, his first marriage having taken place in 1895, when Miss Josephine Harrington became his wife. Two children were born to this union: Geneva and Lynn. In 1910 Mr. Ferguson was married to Mrs. Minnie Andre, daughter of Albert H Robie of Boise, Idaho.
Since age conferred upon Mr. Ferguson the right of franchise he has given his allegiance to the republican party, in the interests of which he has taken an active part. Fraternally he is affiliated with the Masons, being a Knight Templar and having attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite. He is likewise an Elk. mr Ferguson was at one time prominent in the financial circles of Athena as vice president and director of the First National Bank, but his interest inthis organization he has sold and devotes his entire time to his agricultural interest.

GEORGE EDWARD PERRINGER
George Edward Perringer, deceased, was for many years prominent in the agricultural circles of Umatilla county as a successful rancher and wheat man. He was born February 17, 1867, at Ft Scott, Kansas, a son of John W and Caroline (Falkner) Perringer, the former a native of Kentucky, while the latter was born near Nashville, Tennessee. John W. Perringer removed to Ft Scott, Kansas, at an early day and there engaged in farming until 1877 when, with his family, he removed to Umatilla county, near what is now the town of Adams and there took up government land, during the Indian wars. This farm consisted of one hundred and sixty acres and he operated it until 1889, when he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he retired and is still living, at the advanced age of ninety-six years. The death of his wife occurred when their son, George E., was but ten years of age. Mr Perringer has always taken an active interest in political affairs and he is a stanch supporter of the republican party.
George Edward Perringer was but ten years of age when his father removed to the vicinity of Adams and there George E received his education. After completing his common school course he took a business course in a college at Portland, after which he returned to his home near Adams and there engaged in farming. Later he bought a farm of four hundred and eighty acres, adjoining the home place, this he improved and resided on for a period of six years. Selling this land he rented land on the Indian reservation, which he operated in connection with the old home farm. In 1896 he went to Pendleton and built a fine home on Lewis street. he did not retire from active farm life, however, but purchased land on the Indian reservation which he improved and to which he added until he had three thousand five hundred acres and in addition owned valuable land in Alberta, Canada. he also had a two thousand acre ranch two miles from Pilot Rock, Umatilla County, and on all his land he had fine outbuildings equipped in an up-to=date manner. On the 21st of November, 1919, Mr Perringer was shot while in a hotel in Porltand and his death, which came as a severe shock to the community in which he had long resided, left a void which it will be hard to fill.
On the 30th of September, 1890, the marriage of Mr. Perringer and Miss Ida Ferguson, a daughter of James and Mary (Marquis) Ferguson, was celebrated. Mrs Perringer was born in Missouri but was one of the early settlers of Umatilla county, having come here with her parents in 1878. They settled in the vicinity of Pendleton where the father took up government land, improved, built a fine home there and resided for four years. He then bough land near Adams, Umatilla county, which he operated until 1893, when he removed to Pendleton and bought a home. In recent years he built another home, where he resides retired, at the age of seventy-six years. Mrs Ferguson is also living and is seventy-one years of age. To the union of Mr and Mrs Perringer two children were born; Carl; and Muriel, now the wife of John Dolph of Pendleton. Mrs Perringer is residing in the home in Pendleton and is a highly respected citizen of the community, prominent in social and club circles.
The political allegiance of Mr. Perringer was given to the republican party, in the interests of which he always took an active part, although he never sought nor desired public office. In fraternal circles he was well known as an Elk and an Odd Fellow and his religious faith was that of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr Perringer was the largest wheat rancher in eastern Oregon and a shrewd businessman. His business dealings were always conducted on the most honorable basis and he won the confidence and good will of all with whom he came into contact. In the passing of Mr. Perringer, Umatilla county lost one of her most prominent, successful and representative citizens.

Her daughter, Bessie Manfred of Prosser, recalled in a 1990 interview how her mother married at age 15, and raised her family on a dryland wheat ranch.
"She used to drive 35 horses on a big header - - When she wasn't in the fields, she had a cookhouse on wheels where she used to fix meals for the crew," Manfred said.)

Dorothy Straughan Lieuallen
Birth: Feb. 14, 1906
Pendleton
Umatilla County
Oregon, USA
Death: Mar. 16, 2000
Pendleton
Umatilla County
Oregon, USA
The youngest of nine children born to Elwood Fremont and Arizona Hotchkiss Straughan. She spent her early days on the family farm at Birch Creek, south of Pendleton. She graduated in 1924 from Pendleton High School and in 1928 from the University of Oregon where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi.
She taught several years each at the Adams and Heppner high schools and did graudate work during the summers at Stanford University.
In April 18, 1934, she married Otis M. Lieuallen in Pendleton, moved into the farm home south of Adams, and lived there for more than 65 years.
The Lieuallens enjoyed playing bridge, attending sports events and were active in Wildhorse Grange. Mr. Lieuallen died in 1986.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Pendleton, Adams Ladies Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Lieuallen's home and yard sported many plants and flowers. She enjoyed corresponding with relatives and in later years extensively researched the genealogical lines of her family and that of her husband.
As an English teacher, her words were chosen with care - she said exactly what she meant. It was very unusual for her to say a word even remotely unkind about anyone or anything.
Survivors include three sons, Donald and Russell Lieuallen, both of Adams, and Robert Lieuallen, of Pendleton; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and seven step great grandchildren.
