Henry Eiffert, Former Wagon Freighter, Is 'Super Booster' Of the Walla Walla Valley
STATLINE-- Although nurturing a desire to retrace the Idaho and Montana trails he helped blaze as a wagon freighter 64 years ago, Henry Eiffert, 85-year-old Stateline pioneer, is still a "super-ardent" booster for the Walla Walla Valley.
"You can't beat this valley," says Eiffert. "Why, look at this past winter. It's been wonderfully mild. I've been right here almost 80 years, and more than two-thirds of the winters have been as good or better than this one."
While on one of his first freighting trips over the earth and corduroy roads of Idaho, Eiffert saw and tasted some of the beautiful apples that had been produced in the Walla Walla valley. On asking an Indian companion about the region that could produce such fruit, the Indiana replied:
'punkin' Grows Big
"Punkin grow all same horse sleeps" -- indicating the comparative case and size of teh crops in the "valley they liked so well they named it twice."
"The apples and what the Indian said certainly made me want to settle in the area," said Eiffert. "It was about 15 years before I was able to do so, but I found the valley just Like the Indiana had described it."
Eiffert was born in Moline, ILL,. in 1866, and spent his childhood days in Northeastern Missouri.
Came to Northwest
"From 12 to 21 I had a pretty easy time," he said, ". . . then I decided to come West and landed in Helena, Mont.-- which was the toughtest town in the Pacific northwest," he said.
Shortly after arriving in Helena, Eiffert joined an outfit that had a contract for supplying 250,000 railroad ties for the construction of the Northern Pacific from Helena to Seattle.
"It was about this time that I developed great pleasure in meeting bears," he said.
Once while inspecting a road that had been chopped from a forest, Eiffert jiggled the end of a long timbert that extended into the brush. Folloing the disturbance, a large bear, walking on the log, strolled out of the brush towards Eiffert.
Asks Bear to Stop.
"I asked him to stop, and for a minute he did. Then he stood up on his hind legs and I saw he was quite a bit taller than I. He stepped off the log and walked around me two or three times. I had a gun, but I remembered that an old timer had told me never to shoot at a bear unless you had an excellent opportunity of getting away. I held my ground, and didn't shoot. Finally, the bear strolled back into the brush."
On another occasion in Montana, Eiffert had parked his supply wagon near a river while he journeyed on foot to a nearby lumber Camp. On his return to the river, he saw a bear methodically making designs on t he ground by pouring flour from torn bags. "I didn't have to speak to this bear,:" he said "because he left as I approached."
Eiffert became a partner in the Eiffert-Gilson Freighting company when the N.P. railroad contract was fulfilled. The route of the wagon-freight-train developed by the company ran generally from Kootenai and Sandpoint to Spokane and supplied the Northern Pacific railroad crew and the miners in the British Columbia area near the international line.
Stage Robbed on Schedule
"At one time we had 110 mule teams, and since I was the only one who stayed sober, I carried all the cash and valuables. The stage was running over the same route on schedule -- and it was robbed consistently on schedule. Although I took no special precautions, I was never bothered with robbers, and I think I know why7.
"One Saturday night in Kootenai-- shortly lafter I started the freighting business-- the word got around that I had a lot of money on me. Towards the end of the evening, my partner and I headed for the livery stable. We noticed that we were being followed by three men -- so we set up a reception. We went into the stable, and waited 'til the first man approached the door. When he stuck his head inside, we grabbed him, messed him up pretty badly, and tossed him into a corner. We had a long and loud discussion on various methods we could use to eliminate the fellow, and he looked pretty scared. Finally, we hoisted him out into the street with a warning that he better never come back. From that time on, I was never bothered on the road or in any of the towns. I guess the word got around", said Eiffert.
The pioneer illustrated that the wagon roads of the early days were a far cry from the "super highways" of today. "Most of the roads were super-imposed ruts," said Eiffert. "I remember one time on the Pack river near the Idaho-Montana line we had to corduroy a six-mile stretch in order to get through. Another time, our wagon train wandered off the roadway just before dcawn and we had 100 4-mule teams mired in mud and quick-sand. To add to the confusion, another wagon train coming from the opposite direction blundered in among our train. We broke plenty of wagon tongues -- but we finally made the grade: he said.
Farmed in Missouri
In 1892 Eiffert went to Missouri and was married to the former Henrietta Rickenberg. Even after 11 years of farming in Missouri, where the family prospered, Eiffert still retained his desire to settle in the Walla Walla Valley. In 1902, he sold out and moved to Oregon, settling just across the state line on the old Milton highway.
"Our neighbors begged so, that we decided to move into Washington -- about two blocks -- the following year," he said. The pioneer realized the ambition created in him by the simple statement of the Indian 15 years before, and went into the production of all types of apples and prunes. "This is great dairy country, and I had 20 to 30 of the finest milk cows in the area.
In the last four or five years, we converted the orchard land for the production "of sugar beets," he said.
While he was engaged in dairying, Eiffert utilized a 100-acre range in the Blue mountains near Tollgate during the summer months. During this period, he participated in the legendary search for Cecil Brittain, 8 year old boy who was lost in 1907.
Still Likes Valley
Except for six years spent in Seattle when three of his children were attending the University of Washington, Eiffert has lived on his farm since 1903.
Children of Mr and Mrs Eiffert are Ruby, Stateline; Charles, Freewater; Esther, Honolulu; Lewis and Everett, Seattle; MRs Mabel Devin, Walla Walla: Raymond, Stateling, and Mrs Dorothy Hayword, California. Eiffert's brother, William, now 87, resides in Kirksville, Mo.
"Yes, I would like to retravel the old wagon trails in Idaho and Montana -- but I still want to live in the Walla Walla valley," said Eiffert.
