Notes for SAMUEL F GRAY:

History of Montgomery County, Kansas

SAMUEL F GRAY -- November 4, 1868, Samuel F. Gray, of this sketch, was born on a farm in Boone county, Missouri. The next year his parents came to Kansas and settled in Wilson county, temporarily, and in 1870, took up government land in Montgomery county, where they still reside.

While our subject is not a native of the soil of Montgomery county, his life has been practically spent here and all he is he owes to the influences and environment of this county. In childhood life, his daily associates were the aborigines of White Hair's band and between tehm a mutual and lasting attachment sprang up. He communed with speechless nature and drank deep draughts of ozone from the fresh and healthful air. Body and mind expanded simultaneously and the rural exercise developed a strong physique and laid the foundation for an active and vigorous life.

The limit of parental control was reached at twenty-one years and Mr. Gray married and set up for himself. He spent the first three years in Neosho county and then returned to his home neighborhood in Montgomery county. In 1897, he ceased to be a tenant and became a land owner, buying an eighty in section 16, township 31, range 16, where he maintains his present home. The old family homestead he also cultivates and is employed witht he raising of grain and stock.

Samuel F. Gray is a son of Jackson Gray, mention in a sketch elsewhere in this volume. He is the third child of his parents and married, first, Martha, a daughter of William and Sarah Hausley, of Wilson county, Kansas. His wife died in 1894, leaving two children, Edward and Howard. For his second wife Mr. Gray married Rosella Beathe, born in Highland county, Virginia, and a daughter of Joseph and Louisa Beathe.

Mr Gray's disposition leads him to a strict attention to business. He is conscious that labor has its reward and that there is no excellence without it, and his substantial position today has resulted from a close adherence to the spirit of these truths.

Notes for WILLIAM HOWARD BEATHE:

Walla Walla Union Bulletin November 25 1851

Spout Springs Lodge Caretaker is Baskett Mountain Veteran

by Jo Daniels

Pop, caretaker of the Spout Springs Ski lodge in the Tollgate area, is a little man with hair as white as the snows around him, but a heart as warm as the lopsided oil-drum stove he tends.

A puckish guardian of the winter snowland, Pop's full name is William Howard Beathe. He's proud of his Irish ancestry. But his Irish pugnacity doesn't show until you threaten him as being of Norwegian birth, then Saint Patrick watch o'er you.

Pioneer Type

Rather, his sturdiness is of the quiet, deep-rooted pioneering kind that comes of winters of struggling against snows and storms. Sometimes, when the last car has started down the pass, Pop sits by the oil-drum stove with his calico cat, rolls himself a cigarette, and thinks back on those winters and his homesteading days.

He remembers his childhood in Umatilla county and how, as a young man, when the pioneering urge led him to move, he took up a homestead of 410 acres in the Basket mountain area. Times were not easy then, and especially during the snowbound winter months. The only contact with the outside was by mail. and even then Pop had to ski three miles cross country to the mailbox to pick it up. And when during the winter Pop's 17-year-old son was taken with peritonitis, no doctor could be reached and his boy died. Times were not easy then.

Happy Times, too.

But there were happy times too. Some stormy nights the ranch house would be filled with the music of the guitar, or the violin and the piano. Other times, folks would come across the snow from miles away to spend the night dancing. leaving only after the sun had come up in the morning. And it was always a special occasion when the circuit-riding minister came on a Sunday to preach at the schoolhouse or one of the ranches.

Pop thinks of these things now as he sits by the stove with the odor of the burning alder logs in the air and his calico cat beside him. He sits and rocks, and occasionally he goes to the window of the lodge and peers out into the snow and the night. . . and remembers.
