Ballou, Volney James (deceased). The subject of this sketch, whose portrait appears in this work, was born in Saratoga county, New York, May 20, 1827. Here he attended the common schools. In 1839 his parents emigrated to Cuyahoga county, Ohio, where Volney finished his education, after which he sailed around the world, and was absent form port thirty three months, on a whaling voyage. During the California gold excitement in 1849, he returned to Ohio, and being possessed of more than an ordinary advanturous spirit, and enured to the hardships incident to a roving life, he at once emigrated to this State and commenced mining in El Dorado county, continuing in this pursuit until the Fall of 1853, at which time he settled in Santa Rosa valley, on the farm where he died. In 1864, he returned to the East, enlisting in the Subsistence Department, and was detailed as clerk in the commissary depot at Johnsonville, Tennessee, serving in this capacity for nine months, when he was honorably discharged, returning to Du Page county, Illinois. On March 29, 1867, he married at Naperville, in that county, Mrs. Michael Leonard, whose maiden name was Rosia A Mayer. She was born in Northampton county, Pennsylvania, November 2, 1839. Immediately after their marriage, they returned to this State. During his long residence in this county -- from 1853 to the time of his death on June 4, 1877 -- it can be truthfully said of Mr. Ballou that he was an honorable, upright gentleman. Starting out in life as he did, fro himself when quite young, he has achieved all his successes single-handed, and in the presence of obstacles which only the most indomitable energy and courage could have surmounted, has given him an honorable position among his fellow Men.

He married (1) JULIA H BARNARD 17 May 1865 in Du Page, Illinoiis5. She was born 17 Nov 1845 in Naperville, Du Page, Illinois, and died 17 Sep 1869 in Naperville, Du Page, Illinois. He married (2) ELIZA A NORTON 12 Jan 1875 in Du Page, Illinoiis, daughter of MICHAEL NORTON and MARY FITZGERALD. She was born 24 Mar 1848 in New York, and died 12 Aug 1924 in Naperville, Du Page, Illinois.
Notes for SYLVESTER ALLEN BALLOU:
SYLVESTER ALLEN BALLOU FAMILY
Sylvester A. Ballou was a direct descendant of Maturin Ballou, one of the founders of Rhode Island. He was born in Galway N.Y. in 1828. His father, Isaac Albee Ballou, and family moved to Breckenridge, Ohio, in 1832 where he was a farmer and maker of shoes. "Ves," as Sylvester was called, taught school from 1848-9, when he and his brother Volney, sailed around Cape Horn to try their luck in the gold fields, where they arrived in August, 1850.
The brothers walked to Cold Springs, El Dorado Country, "a teeming hive of gold seekers", where Ves became a leading citizen. He founded a Lyceum and the first public library in California in 1853. That year he was elected to the State Assembly in Benicia and made chairman of a committee to investigate sites for a permanent capitol. Ballou’s 7-page document recommending Sacramento, as well as many bills he sponsored, are in the California Archives.
In the summer of 1854 he returned to Naperville where his father had purchased a farm, south of the second bridge along the DuPage River In the spring of 1855 he and his brother Orlando returned to California, living near Quincy where they prospected along the Feather River and packed supplies to the miners’ camps. He was the first teacher in the Pioneer school there, now a California landmark.
In 1858 Ballou was elected to the Assembly again. Newspapers praised him as a hard-working and principled legislator, a capable committee chairman, an effective orator and the best parliamentarian in the house. He was famous for his unflinching stand on the question of statehood for Kansas, emphasizing popular sovereignty rather than his anti-slavery convictions.
In 1859 Ballou was elected to the Senate from Butte and Plumas Counties. His speeches, significant for their intelligent and moral reasoning and also popular for their witty and ironic cast, were often printed on the front pages of the Sacramento and San Francisco papers.
When the legislature was over in 1860, Ballou, convinced that war was imminent, returned to Naperville. He joined the Union Army, became a. major serving in Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee, and won praise as being "not only wise, active and efficient, but thoroughly honest."
In June 1865 he married 20-year-old Julia Barnard and they returned to San Francisco to fulfill his appointment as Chief Commissary Officer of the Army, Department of California. They came back to Naperville in 1866 and their son, Ray, was born the following year. Julia died of pneumonia in 1869.
In 1871 he rented his farm and went to Indian Territory where he engaged in building the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad. In 1873 he returned to California by train (5½ days) and wrote articles for the Naperville Clarion on the great changes in that country. In 1874 his father, Isaac Albee, went to live with his brother; Volney in Santa Rosa, California.
Ves proposed to Eliza Norton in a 6-stanza poem. She was the daughter of Mary and Michael Norton of Irish decent, a beautiful 26-year-old school teacher in the Ellsworth School, with a lively personality. They were married on Jan. 12, 1875. The only time they were separated during their 24 years was when Ves joined the silver rush to Leadville, Colorado, in 1879, an unsuccessful mining venture. They had 4 children, Ralph, Mary Eloise (May) and the twins, Alice and Edith. May married Bernard C. Beckman Oct 24, 1900. Their 3 daughters were Bernice (Mrs. Stuart S. Ball), Eleanor (Mrs. Albert R. Martin) and Sylvia (Mrs. Robert Warner).
Ves enlarged the home he had built for Julia into a fine house, still standing, surrounded by numerous tall condominiums. He bought a second farm adjoining his to the north, running up the road of the second bridge. (The children attended the little red school house that stood across the river to the north.) He found many arrowheads when turning over those fields for the first time. The tenant farmer lived on this farm and there were hired hands when extra help was needed. He kept a journal noting the weather and planting of crops.
The Ballou family had a merry life with games, spelling bees, and constant reading. There was a pleasant social life between the Ballous and other gentlemen farmers south of town, the Greens, the Barnards and the Royces. They moved to Naperville about 1890, the corner of Brainard and Highland Ave.
The Martin Mitchell Museum has the canvas covered truck that Ballou took around Cape Horn, his tall silk hat that he wore to the legislature in California, and the field desk that accompanied him throughout the Civil War

He took his bride to Lisle Township, Ill., then to Naperville, Ill. In 1872 the family moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., where their seventh child was born. Then the family moved to San Francisco, Calif., from which plac, in 1878, they first went to Portland, ORe., then by boat to Wallula, thence to Walla Walla, and finally settled on what is now the old homestead, "Brooklands". From letter of Florence(Ballou) Brown, Spokane, 1032; "Oour original farm was called 'Birch Brook', where I was born in 1880. Father bought it in 1878 and moved the family up from California. Then he found the title was not quite clear and had to use his homestead rights to prove up on it. He bought more land until he had 388 acres of the best land in Walla Walla Valley, containing four streams and fifty-two springs. In 1889 he sold 'Birch Brook Farm' and 80 acres, and moved to another house on the place, which we called 'Crystal Springs Farm'. There he had a large dairy, 20 acres of pears, and an apple orchard. He sold baled timothy hay to the goverment for cavalry horses. In 1899 he sold this place and a hundred acres and built 'Brooklands'. I was married here in 1903."

Historical encyclopedia of Illinois, and History of Du Page County, Munsell Publishing Company, Chicago, 1913 page 952a
Mather, Samuel. The question of supply and demand has been further complicated during recent years by the requirements of pure food laws, which necessitate the production of articles of consumption according to rules proviced for in the various acts passed. Some of the most aggressive business men of Du Page County have found it to their advantage to embark in enterprises having for their object the manufacture of wholesome food products, which because of their purity command good prices in any market. One of these men is Samuel Mather secretary and treasurer of the Naperville Co-operative Co., manufacturers of high grade butter and cheese. He was born March 7, 1847, at Whallonsburgh, Essex County, N. Y., being a son of Joshua E. and Maria (Frisbee) Mather. Joshua E. Mather wasz a mechanic who at one time was engaged in manufacturing iron articles. He came to Illinois in 1852, becoming a farmer, and dying upon his property in 1880. His wife survived him until 1891. They 3were farming people all their lives.
From 1864 to 1865, Mr. Mather attended the Naperville Academy, then returning to the farm, conducted it until 1873. He then had some experience as a ranchman in California from 1873 to 1880. In 1883, he came to Du Page County from Will County, locating in Lisle Township. In 1888, with William King and J.P. Rickert, he organized the Naperville Co-operative Co., with himself as secretary and treasurer. The creamery has a capacity of from 2,700 to 30,000 pounds of milk per day, according to the supply. The business has steadily advanced, and the product is kept up to a high standard of excellence.
Mr. Mather was married November 21, 1866, at Lisle, Ill., to Malvina Ballow. The children born of this marriage werer: Glen E., deceased; Zillia A., deceased; Roy a., Fred E., Roscoe, deceased, and Ethel M. Roy and Fred were educated at Champain, Ill., the latter being with the St. Paul Railroad as civil engineer, while the former is with the American Bridge Co. at Ambridge, Penn. Zillia died when twenty-two years old, after graduating from the Northwestern College at Naperville. Ethel married Dean D. Gross, and her husband is a merchant of Yankton, S.D.; Daniel, their son, is ex-postmaster of this place.
Mr. Mather has always been active in Republican party matters, serving as Alderman from the Third Ward of Naperville during 1907, 1908 and 1909, and in 1910, he was elected Mayor. During his administration, the people enjoyed a businesslike administration, and a number of improvements were inaugurated and carried out. He is a Past Master of Euclid Lodge, No. 65, A.F. & A. M., and Past High Priest of Euclid Chapter, No. 13, R. A. M. While not affiliated with any religious denomination, he believes in the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man. Mr. Mather was Postmaster here for six years, filling a part of this time as assistant.

P. A. BUELL -- born on a farm near Cleveland, Ohio, Park Arbington Buell, generally known as P.A. Buell, was the son of Sidney Buell and Amelia W. (Ballou) Buell. After his father's death, his mother brought her little family to California, and built a home at Santa Rosa.
P.A. Buell remained at home until he was grown, receiving his education in the public schools. he came to Stockton in the early '80s and entered the employ of the White & Thomas Planing Mill Company, remaining with them until he went into business for himself. He organized the P.A. Buell Planing Mill & Lumber company, with office at Center and Sonora streets. The mills covered an area of 50,000 square feet, and the yards occupied over ten acres on the south bank of Mormon channel.
After establishing himself in Stockton, Mr. Buell married Miss Ada Moore, the daughter of H.H. Moore, a well-known pioneer resident and businessman of the city. Three children were born to Mr and Mrs. Buell: Leon Moore, Henry H. and Amy. The eldest son died at the age of eight years. Henry H. is a graduate of Stanford University, and an electrical engineer by profession. He married Miss Rheda Ridenour, and they have two sons, Warren Henry, and Robert Allen. Amy graduated from Miss Head's school in Berkeley, and received her degree from Mills College. She is the wife of John Stewart Greaves and they have one daughter, Nancy Jane.
P.A. Buell was a stanch Republican in politics, and fraternally a knight Templar Mason and a member of Charity Lodge, I.O.O.F. He was prominently identified with many affairs which were beneficial to the public good. He was the organizer and president of the Commercial Association which was instrumental in having the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad built from Stockton; was identified with the building of the Sierra Railroad; was a director of the Jackson, Sutter & Amador Railway Company, whose line was then in course of construction. He also visited Washington in the interest of waterways of California. His last prominent work was the organization of the San Joaquin Valley Association, embracing the twelve counties forming the low lands and slopes of that fertile valley. he was also the president of the Bown Mining Company of Tuolumne.
Mr Buell continually and unselfishly devoted a large proportion of his time and best effort aiding and encouraging any worthy enterprise which he felt would redound to the advantage of his community. In his sudden and premature death on April 4, 1900, Stockton lost a stalwart supporter of every civic movement for the welfare of his adopted city.

DR Y.C. BLALOCK, physician and surgeon in the Rees-Winans building, was born in Mitchell county, North Carolina, August 3, 1859. He was early taken by his parents to central Illinois, where he resided until 1873, attending the public schools. He then started across the plains to Walla Walla, driving a four-mule team all teh way from Macon county, Illinois. For a number of years after his arrival he worked on his father's farm during the summer months, attending school in winter, and at last, by dint of hard, patient effort in the face of difficulties which would have overwhelmed a less resolute man, he prepared himself for entrance to Jefferson Medical College.
Immediately after graduation Dr. Blalock began practice in Walla Walla, opening an office on April 1, 1884. Since that date he has devoted his energies assiduously to his profession, building up a large practice, and attaining a high standing among his fellow practitiioners. At present he holds the office of county coroner, and for four terms he was health officer of the city. his interest in the welfare of WallaWalla is manifested in many ways, but finds more particular expression in his activity in connection with the Volunteer fire department, of which he has served as chief for six years. The Doctor is very active in politices. In 1898 he was elected chairman of the Republican County Central Committee, and in the present year he was again chosen to fill that office.
In fraternal circles the Doctor is intensely active. He has held many high offices in the Masonic order, both in the grand and subordinate lodges, and is also very prominent in the K. of P., and a member of the I.O.O.F. He was married, in April, 1883, in Walla Walla, to Julia Sanderson, a native of that city, who died in October, 1885, leaving one son, Jesse N. In 1890 he again married, the lady being Lillian Ballou, who resided just across the Oregon line from Walla Walla, and to this marriage was born one daughter, Phoebe I.

Marriage Notes for BERTHA BALLOU and WILLIAM CHURCH:
Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1948 > November > 14, page 12
Golden Wedding of Churches Will be Observed November 21
Fifty years ago, minus a week or so, W. Dement Church of Walla Walla and Bertha Ballou were married at the bride's home-- known as Chrystal Springs farm -- in the Ballou district, north of Freewater.
The bride was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orlando R Ballou, pioneers of the Freewater district since 1878.
An informal golden anniversary of that marriage will be observed next Sunday, November 21, though the precise anniversary date is the following Tuesday.
The Churches will be at home with open house next Sunday from 3 until 6 o'clock. They live in the former Baunmeister residences on South Second. Mr. and Mrs. Church extend a general public invitation to their friends to call during the open house.
Walla Walla Always Home
Walla Walla has been home for the couple through this half-century of married life and both have contributed much to the development of their community in several fields.
The Church-Ballou romance had its inception at a charity ball, which in that day and age was the ultimate in Walla Walla society. The young man lost no time in pressing his courtship. Sometimes he walked the several miles from his home to the Ballou place, but he soon acquired a cayuse to replace the bicycle on which he customarily "went acourtin". There was either a lot of dust or a lot of mud to contend with.
The cayuse eventually came to know the route so well that the rider frequently enjoyed a deep sleep in the saddle on the return trip.
Dr. Penrose Officiated.
The wedding took place November 23, at the bride's home. She wore white silk organdie over taffeta. The wedding gown will be worn next Sunday at the open house by Mrs. Church's daughter, Mrs. Bert Edwards.
The late Dr. Stephen B. L. Penrose was the officiating minister. Dr. Penrose, by the way, officiated at the wedding of Ruth Church and Bert Edwards in 1936.
Portland Best Man
The bridesmaid was Florence, sister of the bride, now Mrs. David Brown of Spokane. Dr. Edwin Labbe of Portland was best man.
After a wedding breakfast the newlyweds came to Walla Walla and caught the 2:30 N.P. train to Tacoma where they spent their honeymoon. The station was then at Palouse and Main.
On their return they set up a temporary home in a little cottage previously occupied by Dr. J. F. Cropp, on East Rose, before he erected a larger and more imposing home.
First Law Stenographer
Mrs. Church has the distinction of being Walla Walla's first law office stenographer -- in fact there was only one other girl of that profession then employed in town.
To acquire an education, she first attended the very old and historically important Ford school, which stood at one time near the Ford cemetery. a short distance west of the Milton-Freewater highway at Ballou road.
When 12, she came to Walla Walla to attend Baker school, living with a sister who was a teacher. She attended Whitman academy, and from there went to the Stubblefield business college, located on the second floor of a building on Main street between First and Second streets.
Her first job was with the law firm of B.L. and J.L. Sharpstein. At the outset, the elder partner thought the idea of a woman around a law office was not in good taste, but he soon capitulated.
Ingram First Reporter
Oscar Ingram was court reporter at the time. Mrs. Church states that her salary was $35 per month, with five-day weeks, but she earned as much or more some weeks by doing public stenography.
Her employers reached the conclusion that Bertha Ballou should study law and attain the status of a law clerk. Judge Sharpstein later commented: "She was making great headway toward a brilliant career in law, when she foolishly fell in love."
Mrs Church has personal knowledge about a great deal of the march of progress in the valley. her parents came from Santa Rosa, where she was born in 1878 and bought the Teale place on what is now Ballou road, near the highway to Freewater.
Orlando R. Ballou was an apostle of diversified farming. He brought the first purely-bred jersey cow to the area, introduced new alfalfa types, started a diversified orchard. He converted milk to butter and cheese, and brought his goods to Walla Walla on Saturdays.
It was Orlando Ballou who led the struggle to get a highway into Freewater, and it was laid out on the present grade. To reach Freewater or Walla Walla, six gates had to be opened in either case. The Walla Walla trip involved fording the Walla Walla river and the Yellow Hawk.
It was also Ballou who fought against great odds for a right-of-way for the interurban road. The third attempt was successful.
Flower Fancier
Mrs. Church's parents were great lovers of flowers, and their lovely home in the Ballou district soon came to be a valley show place. Apparently Mrs. Church inherited that trait. She headed up the first P.T.A. in the Washington School, and with Mrs. Alfred Jones founded the Washington school flower show which has enjoyed an uninterrupted popularity. She has been president of the Walla Walla garden club, has been a member of the Iris club and the Offner Garden club.
Her devotion to blooms was exemplified in her success with the flower show at the Walla Walla fair, which she directed after the excellent and protracted service in that capacity by the late Fred Hedger.
Besides all these activities she has been actively associated with the D.A.R. and many other fields where cultural development is an objective.
Remembers Indian Troubles
The Indian troubles of 1878 broke soon after the Ballous arrived, though the warring warriors got no nearer than Pendleton and Umatilla.
Most of the countryside bivouacked in tents at the fair grounds in Walla Walla. The Ballous, however, joined with he McCoy family of their district in protecting the women and children in the McCoy home at night. The men stood guard. To a girl of tender years, the excitement was something not soon forgotten.
Fostered History Moves.
Dement Church has been particularly attentive to the development and advancement of greater appreciation of history values. There is good reason for this trait because his grandfather, William C. Dement, was one of those who came to Oregon with the first train of immigrants in 1843.
William C. Dement later married the daughter of Hezekiah Johnson, who came to Oregon City in 1845 as the first Baptist minister in that community.
To that union was born Julia Dement., who married Charles Church of Oregon City. William Dement Church is the son of that couple.
Church came to Walla Walla from Oregon City in 1890 to serve as accountant for the flour mill owned and operated by his uncles, the Dement brothers. He later became a member of the firm and was the corporation's secretary when it was sold in 1918. He continued in the grain-buying business.
Association Leader
He has given much time and support to the Walla Walla County Pioneer association, of which Dr. N.G. Blalock was the first president. This was more than 50 years ago. Ben Bergunder was the second president, followed by Will Clark, Dement, and Frank Lowden, incumbent.
The late Marvin Evans was secretary under Bergunder, and Church succeeded Evans, serving 14 years. He then took the presidency for a nine-years service.
Not Reunion
Mr and Mrs Church will not be favored with the presence of the entire family during the anniversary. Instead, they enjoyed the homecoming of their sons and daughters during the past summer -- save only their son Robert D. of Medford. To complete the anniversary year contacts, the Walla Wallans visited their son at his Medford home during the summer.
Sons and daughters other than Robert, are: Elizabeth (Mrs. Wendell T.)Fitzgerald, San Francisco; Donald B., Stewart, Va.; Jean (Mrs. Robert K.) Blair, Fort Hamilton, N.Y.; Ruth (Mrs. Bert) Edwards, Walla Walla.

Notes for FLORENCE PERDITA BALLOU:
The Ballous in America, Pub. by Ballou Family Assoc of America, Boston, Mass, Sept 1937 pg 65
He is interested in real estate developments, constructing a beautiful section of Spokane, where he had the privilege of planning with the cooperstion of Olmstead Bros., nationally known lanscape garderners of Brookline, Mass. One of the streets he named Ballou Street, another, Garfield Road. He is a director of the Hazelwood Creamery Co., Spokane, and much interested in fine blooded and short horn cattle. The Ballou Family Assn. is much indebted to Mrs. Florence (Ballou) Brown, his estimable wife, for a great deal that has been recorded along genealogical lines of this interesting Balloou branch. We can easily see what her sister, Myra Ballou, of 'Brooklands', Freewater, Ore., means when she says, 'She is the genealogical sister.' Their home is at the 'Farm', seven miles west of Spokane, at the intersection of the Sunset and Columbia Highways. Members of this family belong to the Association.

Notes for FANNY B MCLACHLAN:
Email: Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2007
Great ancestry research! I found a couple of errors:
1. Daniel W. Ballou was married twice, not three times. His second wife was Sierra Ella Meek (Sierra E. Ballou), but she also went by Ella S. Ballou. So your third person is the same as the second.
I have a photo of her, but haven't found anything more about her than what you have. One story about her--when my sister had twins, it was thought that there was no history of twins in the family tree. However, a great aunt explained that there was one pair of twins--Sierra and Nevada. I can't imagine there's another Sierra in the family, so I've looked for a "Nevada Meek" but have found nothing. Could have even died in infancy.
2. Daniel W. Ballou's son Percy (my great grandmother) married Fanny McLachlan (spelling is off in your article. I knew her--she died in 1974 at the age of 95). Her father was Peter McLachlan (not J. S. McLachlan), born in Scotland and came through New York to live in California. I have a photo of him.
Daniel W.'s son Percy was my great grandfather.

Mr. Bert R. Edwards
1135 Alvarado Terrace
Walla Walla. Washington 99362
Dear Bert,
The account of your wife's family as it appeared in last night's Bulletin reminded me that the Ballou name is closely tied to the development of the Milton-Freewater.
I am sending you a copy of the July 24th Valley Herald which relates to the project which W.S. Caverhill has spear-headed in development of the "Trail of Pioneers".
The response to the sale of steps has been tremendous, and I feel we should draw your attention to it. In each case we are using the family name and the year of arrival to the valley, and are having this information sandblasted onto each step.
Each family is paying $35.00 for a step, and although Mr. Caverhill and I signed a Contract with Romie Kemp to develop the site and set the steps, it appears that we will have enough step sales to practically cover the cost. Any deficit he and I will make up or will pick up local contribution for the difference.
If you are interested, it would be in order for you to make a check to S.W. Caverhill, Pioneer Trail Fund, and give us the first name or initial of the earliest settler and his wife, and the date of arrival in the valley.
We have had one or two who have not had full information, and they have used just the Family name and the year date.
Having known Mrs. Florence Brown as well as we did, I am sure that historical information is available in your families. If you have any questions, please give me a quick ring.
Yours sincerely,
RB:ekk
(Hand written note on letter: Church and Bertha Ballou was married Nov. 23, 1898. Her parents had come here in 1878 and purchased proplerty that became Ballou Road.)
===========================
August 3, 1969
Dear Bert,
I was glad to get your letter of July 31, and the copy of the Valley Herald. I was very much interested in the article about the "Trail of the Pioneers". It would be fitting indeed to have the Ballou family on one of the steps.
Of course, the whole Ballou Family was in the group, but our grandparent's names were:
ORLAND RALPH BALLOU
ELIZABETH BOYD BALLOU
The date of their arrival in the Walla Walla Valley was 1878.
He had been up the previous winter to look things over, but the family arrived 1878 and remained as permanent settlers and developers of the valley.
Other members of the Ballou family arriving in 1878 were:
Lillian 18 yrs old (Phoebe's mother)
Myra 16 yrs old
Grant Albee 14 yrs old Buried in Ford Cemetery near Ballou Road
Clarence Orlando 12 yrs old
Harry Euberto 7 yrs old (Pauline and Allen's dad)
Bertha Amelie 4 yrs old (Our mother)
Aunty Florence was born in 1880 in Oregon Birch Brook Farm.
Aunty Lillian said the outgoing occupants of the cabin on Birch Brook Farm told them there were just a very few bedbugs in the cabin.
Of course, according to the very best authorities on the subject, and believe me, I have talked to some real first class authorities, there is no such thing as a very few bed dugs, even as there is no such thing as a very little, or a "trace" of garlic.

Grandma Ballou was 41 yrs old. B. May 12, 1837.
As far as the other members of our family are concerned, you have probably heard many times that our Great Grandfather, Wm. Clement Dement arrive in the valley in 1843, probably stopping at the Whitman Mission, and at the Fort Walla Walla for sure (Where our ferry was on the Columbia). He went on to Oregon City, or near it, on the Willamette.
Our Grandfather Charles Pratt Church passed through the valley in 1862 on his way to the gold diggings at Florence, near the Salmon River in Idaho. He returned by boat down the Snake and Columbia to the Willamette (Harrisburg).
When the Dements came to Walla Walla I don't know - -Catherine probably has the record. Grandpa Church began buying wheat in the valley about 1880, according to his journal.
I think it is a wonderful thing to have the Ballou names on one of those steps. Thanks a million for your interest.
Love and best wishes to all
Don

Dear Russel:
Here is a check for $35.00 to Mr. W.S. Caverhill to make possible a step in the "Trail of Pioneers" for:
Orlando Ralph Ballou
Elizabeth Boyd Ballou
1878
Donald Church, a grandson of Orlando and Elizabeth Ballou, has written me a very interesting and factual letter about his grandparents and about others of his family who arrived in these parts in the nineteenth century. Donald Church is fast becoming a very eligible replacement for his father W.D. Church who was one of the Valley's renown historians. I thought you might be interested in a copy of this letter.
Best Regards,
Sincerely yours,
Bert R. Edwards.

Dear Bert:
I am mailing you a couple copies of the current Valley Herald which has more information regarding the Dorion Park.
Sorry I missed you when you cam by.
The steps had just been poured when, I am sorry to say, we have had a couple of vandalism episodes up there. The damage to the steps is being repaired, however, and the contractors are going ahead with the development.
We are having a big redwood sign made, but will not hang it until after the project is completed.
Thought you might want to send one of these issues to your brother-in-law.
Yours sincerely,
RB:ekk
