MICHAEL B. WARD -- In this compilation it is signally consistent that we incorporate a brief review of teh career of the honored pioneer whose name initates this parargraph, and such a memoir can not but prove of interest to the readers of this volume. Mr. Ward was a native of the old Buckeye state, born near Zanesville, Licking county, Ohio, on the 11th of June, 1818. He remained in his native county until he was about nineteen years of age, when he accompanied his parents on their removal to Squaw Grove, DeKalb county, Illinois, where he continued his educational discipline and grew to maturity. He had grown up under the sturdy and invigorating discipline of the farm, and to the basic art of agriculture he continued to devote his attention after attaining his majority, continuing on the paternal homestead in Illinois until 1842, when he engaged in farming on his own responsibility, in the same county, his father having deeded him a quarter section, to which he added, by individual purchase, another tract.
He continued his operations in this line until 1851, when he crossed the plains to California, making the trip with horses. he remained until December of the following year, when he returned to Illinois and purchased another farm, of which he disposed at the end of a year and again essayed the long overland journey to the Pacific coast, ox-teams being utilized at this time. He located in Linn county, Oregon, where he arrived in November, 1852, settling on a tract of three hundred and twenty acres, one-half of which he had purchased, while the remaining quarter section had been taken up in the name of his wife, the privilege of thus holding having been at that time accorded by the land laws. Mr. Ward here engaged principally in the raising of live stock, cultivating sufficient land to provide fodder for the stock.
In the fall of 1861 Mr. Ward came with his family to Walla Walla county, arriving in November, with a drove of cattle. The winter proved to be one of exceptional severity, and Mr. Ward lost the greater portion of his stock by reason of this condition. The winter in question was passed on the farm of Lewis McMorris, and the following spring Mr. Ward returned to Oregon, disposing of his interests there and bringing the remainder of his stock to Walla Walla county, where he bought a half interest in the farm of Mr. McMorris, purchasing the remainder of the place two years later. To this tract he added by subsequent purchase until he was the owner of a valuable place of seven hundred acres. The family remained on the farm until the centennial year, 1876, when they took up their abode in the city of Walla Walla, locating in a beautiful home, at the head of Poplar street, where our honored subject continued to reside until the hour of his death, which occurred on the 12th of April, 1893, at which time he had attained the venerable age of seventy-four years. He was a man of strong intellectual and physical powers, and it is worthy of note that his final illness was of but two hours duration. He passed away in the fullness of years, secure in esteem and affection of the community where he had lived and labored so long.
The home place in Walla Walla comprised originally a tract of ten acres, but of this several lots have been since either sold or deeded to the children of the family. Mr. Ward never aspired to political preferment, though such was his popularity and such the confidence reposed in him by the public, that he was called upon to serve in the important office of county commissioner, of which he was the incumbent for a period of six consecutive years. he was a man of inflexible integrity in all the relations of life, and as one of the worthy pioneers of the northwest his name will be held in lasting honor.
In DeKalb county, Illinois, on the 20th of October, 1842, was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Ward to Miss Amelia E. Harmon, a native of Wilkes county, North Carolina. In early childhood she accompanied her parents to Illinois, where she was reared and educated. her father was by trade and occupation a gunsmith and blacksmith, and it was in his shop that she made the acquaintance of Mr. Ward. She accompanied her husband on his second trip across the plains, and during all the years of their married life she proved his devoted helpmeet and companion. Mr. and Mrs. Ward became the parents of one child, Agusta M., who is the widow of Major R. R. Rees, the pioneer newspaper publisher of Walla Walla, in which city she still maintains her residence. Mr. Ward was a devoted member of the United Brethren church, as is his widow, both having contributed liberally to the support of religious work and all other worthy causes.
Mrs. Ward is a woman of refinement and gracious personality, and has been prominent in the social life of her home city for many years. She is a member of the Ladies' Relief Association of Walla Walla and was one of the lady commissioners to the world's fair at New Orleans, in 1885, she and her husband remaining in the Crescent city for a month, in the interests of the Walla Walla Valley. mrs Ward contributed five hundred dollars to the building fund for the boys' dormitory of Whitman College. She has at all times had a lively interest in the welfare of the city and county.

Lyman's History of Old Walla Walla County - 1918
RAYMOND RINGOLD REES.
A man who has contributed to the upbuilding of a city in one line of development is considered worthy of honor, but that man who has a part in the promotion of his city's interests in many fields of activity has a still greater claim upon the gratitude of his fellow citizens, and such was the record of Raymond Ringold Rees, pioneer newspaper man, prominent merchant and man of affairs.
He was born in Reily, Ohio, June 17, 1833, and was taken by his parents to Delaware, that state, where he remained until he was twenty-one years old. During his youth he served an apprenticeship to the printer's trade and in 1854 he came west with a brother by way of the isthmus of Panama, their destination being Portland, Oregon, in the vicinity of which a third brother lived. After a short time Mr. Rees of this review secured work as a typesetter on the Christian Advocate and as he had the distinction of being the only man in Portland who could set book type, he did that work on McCormac's Almanac, the first book published on the Pacific coast. He was also employed as a typesetter on the first issue of the Daily Oregonian, Portland's famous newspaper. With the exception of eighteen months spent with a brother in the Colville mines, he was identified with newspaper publication in Portland until 1861, when he came to Walla Walla, reaching here on the 21st of November.
Mr. Rees formed a partnership with Nemiah Northrop and established the first newspaper in this section - the Washington Statesman. The firm sent to Portland for a press, which arrived on schedule time, and the first issue of the newspaper appeared on November 27th. The publishers therein made the following announcement to the public: "We send forth this morning with our congratulations the first number of the Washington Statesman, and respectfully solicit the attention of the people of Walla Walla and county to its pages . . . That a weekly publication devoted to the various interests of the country, containing all the news which may be gathered from different quarters, is essentially needed in the Walla Walla valley we premise no permanent resident will deny. This admitted, we have no misgivings as to the disposition of the people to come forward and promptly sustain an enterprise so materially calculated to further their interests as a community." In the meantime the firm of Rees & Northrop learned that two brothers named Smith intended starting a democratic paper in Walla Walla and had sent to Portland for a press, which, however, reached The Dalles just as the Columbia river, at that time the only highway, froze over, with the result that it could not be delivered for three months. Mr. Smith desired to become a member of his competing firm and his wish was granted. The first subscriptions did not come in to the new paper as readily as had been expected. Accordingly Mr. Smith made a tour on horseback of Walla Walla county and Umatilla county and succeeded in obtaining two hundred subscriptions at five dollars per year, the circulation list containing the names of practically all the men of the two counties. The Statesman was the first newspaper established in eastern Washington, then known as the "upper country," and was a factor of great importance in the early development of this region. Mr. Rees was one of the owners of that journal until November, 1865, when he sold his interest therein to W.H. Newell, and the following five years were devoted to farming in connection with his father-in-law. In 1870 he returned to Walla Walla and formed a partnership with H.E. Johnson for the conduct of a mercantile business under the style of Johnson & Rees. Two years later W.P. Winans bought into the firm and the name was changed to Johnson, Rees & Winans. With Mr. Johnson's subsequent retirement from the business the firm became Rees & Winans and so remained until 1887, when the business was sold. In the meantime a two-story building was erected where now stands the Farmers Savings Bank. Plans were subsequently made for the erection of the Rees-Winans building but before construction work was begun Mr. Rees was called by death. His widow, with Mr. Winans, however, carried out the plans already made and the building was erected in due time and was an important addition to the downtown section of Walla Walla. As a merchant Mr. Rees was enterprising, progressive and sound of judgment, managing his affairs carefully and giving much thought to anticipating the demands of his customers. He based his success upon the firm foundation of the best service possible and full return for all money received.
Mr. Rees was married March 12, 1865, to Miss Augusta Ward, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Michael V. Ward. She was born near Chicago, in De Kalb county, Illinois, in 1843 and in 1853 accompanied her parents to Oregon, the journey being made by ox team. The family settled near Lebanon, in Linn county, but the long wet season proved unhealthful and Mr. Ward developed serious throat trouble. On the advice of a physician he removed to Walla Walla county, bringing with him three hundred head of cattle. That winter, however, there was an unusually heavy snowfall and owning to the unfavorable weather conditions he lost all of his cattle but forty-four. However, the increase in prices enabled him to realize so much from the remaining cattle that his net loss was inconsiderable. He bought the Lewis McMorris ranch a few miles south of Walla Walla and operated that place for some time but at length disposed of it. He then removed to Walla Walla and erected there the most pretentious home in the city at the corner of East and Poplar streets. At the time of the visit of President Hayes and party the president and his wife were entertained at the home of Mr. Ward, as there were no suitable hotel accommodations to be found in the city. Mrs. Hayes insisted in helping with the house work and at her request fried apples were served at breakfast. The democratic spirit manifested by the president and his wife made their visit a genuine pleasure as well as an honor. To Mr. and Mrs. Rees were born three children: Frank W., a well known dentist of Walla Walla; Elma R., the wife of H.H. Turner, cashier of the Baker-Boyer Bank of Walla Walla; and Lora R., the wife of Paul Compton, of Los Angeles, California. Mr. Compton is a son of General Compton, who for years had command of the garrison at Walla Walla.
Mr. Rees was a prominent democrat and for many years took an active part in politics. He represented his district at two different times in the state legislature; for several years served as county treasurer, and his record as an official was highly creditable alike to his ability and his public spirit. He was always called upon with a certainty of response for aid in carrying out projects for the development of Walla Walla city and count and his demise, which occurred July 12, 1889, was recognized as a great loss to his community.
His widow survives and resides in one of the handsomest residences of the city, in which she takes great pride, for it was built in accordance with plans drawn by herself. After the death of her husband she carried on the business of the estate. She is one of the honored pioneer settlers of Walla Walla and her reminiscences of the early days when the present rapidly growing city was a little frontier settlement are much appreciated by the younger generation, who find it hard to realize that conditions have changed so radically within a half century. When she came to this region there were not more than twenty white women in the valley and she is one of the very few of the number now living.

RAYMOND R. REES is one of the old and successful merchants of Walla Walla, senior member of the firm of Rees, Winans & Co. He was born in Butler Co., Ohio, in 1833, and emigrated to Oregon in 1854. In 1864 he went to Walla Walla and became one of the founders of the Washington Statesman, having been a printer for a number of years. In 1865 he abandoned journalism and entered the mercantile business, being now one of the leading merchants of the city. He served two terms as County Treasurer, and in 1880 was chosen to the lower house of the Legislature. In 1855 he was one of those who, seeking gold, found themselves in the Colville mines, when the Indian war broke out, cutting them off from the settlements; and with a few comrades he remained during the winter in that section of country. We have learned little of Mr. Rees except in an indirect way through the general public, as he was in San Francisco at the time we were investigating for biographical notes. Through sources such as were at our command, we learned that he was a member of the Board of Trade, a front rank man in all matters of a public nature either political or financial, a free thinker with a philosophical turn of mind, a liberal Democrat, a genial companion, and a gentleman of generous and honorable instincts.

Raymond R Rees learned the printing trade in Hamilton, Ohio, and went to Oregon in 1854, where he worked on "The Standard and Christian Advocate" of Portland. He set the type for the first almanac printed in Oregon. In 1861, he moved to Walla Walla, Washington, where he founded "The Washington Statesman," the second paper printed between Portland and the Rocky Mountains-- the first being "The Dalles Mountaineer." He sold the paper in 1865, and was engaged in mercantile business until 1887. He was twice elected to the Washington legislature, and for six years was treasurer of Walla Walla county.

Rees, R. R. Major
The following data is extracted from Union County, Oregon Obituaries
On last Thursday morning Dr. C.H. Day received a telegram from Walla Walla announcing the death of Major Raymond R. Rees at that place. Deceased was an uncle of Mrs. Dr. Day and well known by many in this vicinity. Mr. Rees came to Walla Walla in 1861 and was one of the original owners of the Statesman published in that city. He leaves a wife and three children. The Walla Walla Journal says of him:
He was always called major, from his boyhood up and the title stuck to him all through life with becoming modesty. Politically, he was a staunch old democrat. Religously, he was a free-thinker, with a philosophical turn of mind; a genial companion, full of charity; in a word, a gentleman and a scholar, of generous, lofty and honorable impulse.

Mansion may relive its heyday by Vance Orchard
A Walla Walla residential showplace when it was built 70 years ago may soon be restored tot he turn-of-the-century vintage.
Most recently the quarters of the Colonial Funeral Home, 260 E Birch St, the structure was erected in 1906 as the home of Augusta Ward Rees.
It was retained in the family until its sale in 1966 to Colonial Funeral Home Inc. Another funeral home had been located there for about 30 years previously.
Purchasers of the home are two Tri-Cities bachelors. Adrian Phipps and Jack Laughery, owners of Adrian's Supper Club in Richland. Sellers are Bill and Margaret Watson, officers of Colonial Funeral Home Inc.
Purchase price was $80,000. The transaction was handled by Jefferis Agency Inc., Second Avenue and W. Main Street. Sales representatives were Mike Dobbins and Ted Johnson.
Phipps and Laughery are moving here from the Tri-Cities in to make the home their residence.
Phipps lived in Walla Walla in the 1930's and attended Green Park School. Laughery was born and raised in DAyton where his parents still live. The two men have been business partners for 18 years. Each has been in the restaurant business for several years.
The new buyers will start immediately on an extensive program to restore the home to its appearance in both decor and furnishings as the year it was completed.
Both are interested in antique furnishings and enjoy doing refinishing of such items, planning to do much of the restoring work themselves. Dobbins said.
He said the buyers have looked in many parts of the Northwest for a place to which they could retire, and the Rees mansion fulfilled their wishes.
Besides the interior, the buyers plan to do extensive landscaping of the grounds, including possibly an orchid house.
According to Imogene Turner, who now resides at 127 Whitman St., the house was the home of its builder, Augusta Ward Rees, until her death in 1920. mrs. Turner's husband, Howard, was a grandson of Mrs. Rees.
The mansion lay vacant for a few years until it became the home of Howard and Imogene Turner until 1923.
The house was again vacant for about three years when it became the residence of Elma Rees Turner, mother-in-law of Imogene Turner.
In the early 1930's the house was leased to the MacMartin and Chamberlain Funeral Home. This firm was dissolved about 14 years ago and again the house was vacant until leased in 1964, then purchased by the Watsons, who started Colonial Funeral Home in 1966.
Mrs. Rees built the home following the death of her husband, publisher of "The Statesman", an early Walla Walla newspaper. Rees was also active in politics and was speaker of the House of the Washington Territorial Legislature.
Mrs. Turner inherited the house on the death of her husband in 1951.
While Mrs. Rees lived alone in the house much of the time, many servants cared for the house, including a gardener who had his own house at the rear of the property.
"A lot of Chinese help was available at that time." Mrs. Turner said. "Mrs. Rees must have had five or six servants in the house, including cooks, as well as a Chinese gardener to care for the big yard.
"The bathroom was a huge room; the circular bathtub was so big our two daughters could easily swim around in it when they were small children.
"The fixtures for the big tub came out of the center of the tub, set away from the wall but not in the middle of the room."
Daughters of Mrs. Turner are Nancy Turner, who resides in Walla Walla with her mothers, and Jeanne Creighton, of Thomaston, Maine.
The house had five fireplaces, one int he living room, one in the dining room, one in the library and one in each of the two front bedrooms, Mrs. Turner said.
The house was heated with hot water. Special piping carried the heated water through the big china closet in order to protect the crystal and china stored there, she said.
Even when Mrs. Rees dined alone, she enjoyed having full, seven-course meals served, Mrs. Turner said.
A bell-button, implanted in the floor at her feet, provided a signaling device to the kitchen when she was ready for the next course, Mrs. Turner said.
While the Turners made the house their residence, Turner had a magnificent billiards room built in the basement.
Turner was considered one of the finest billiards players in the Northwest, Mrs. Turner said. He was the manager of the Seattle-First National Bank when he died in 1951, mrs. Turner said.
While the house had been a showplace since Mrs. Rees built it, it certainly was that during the occupancy by the Turners.
Mrs. Turner recalled a dinner-dance hosted by her and her husband on the occasion of the wedding of Tom Gose and Jane Ankeny.
"We had all the silverware and dishes necessary and had 125 people in attendance," she said.
Mrs Turner has been asked by the buyers of the Rees mansion to act as an adviser for them as they go about returning the home to its 1906 grandeur.
