An illustrated history of Umatilla County, page 453
NELSON SWAGGART -- In the person of the subject of this sketch we have presented to us one of the oldest inhabitants of the county, and one whose life has been of constant activity and enterprise. During his long and useful career he has noted many of the most wonderful changes that the world has ever seen, the transformation of steam and electricity. He saw the first steamboat that ever plied on the Father of waters during its initial trip. He has ever been in the van of civilization, his parents being pioneers before him, and now after having passed four and a quarter score of years he is weaving out the golden web of life on the front side of the foremost nation on the globe, where his hands have toiled so faithfully to bring about this pleasant time in a well developed land of plenty.
He was born in Illinois on January 17, 1817, where he received a rudimentary education and remained the earlier years of his manhood. There he was married, on June 24, 1847, to Miss Adaline, daughter of George and Louisana (Higgins) Harper. In 1853 the family came across the plains to the Willamette Valley and Mr. Swaggart took up a donation claim, remaining there until 1878. At this date he removed to this county and took up government land where he now lives, two and one-half miles north from Athena. here he has given his attention to tilling he soil and stock raising continuously since.
To Mr. and Mrs. Swaggart have been born fourteen children, as follows: George, living in Heppner; Louisana, wife of William Matlock and living in Pendleton; Alice, wife of Wilbur Keith and living in Colfax, Washington; Benjamin, married and living near Heppner; Mary Keeny, deceased; William Edward deceased; Charlotte, deceased; Lincoln, married and living near by; Olive, deceased; Rosetta, wife of Carl Wheeler and living in Pendleton; Milton, married and living on the home place; Lester, married and living in Pendleton; Wilber and Gracie, deceased. Mrs. Swaggart has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church since 1853, having spent nearly one-half century in the service of her Divine Master, being still active in that work. She was born in Hancock county, Illinois, on October 228, 1829. To these aged and worthy pioneers we most gladly do honor, and where is the land that is so blessed as that where the ripeness of age mingles with the energy of youth, giving wisdom and discretion to direct its impetuous force, and where the "hoary head that is the crown of glory" is respected and honored by all.

Jones-Harper Shootout in Lexington Saloon
Story given to Inez Erwin by Kathleen Hisler
Prepared by Helen Currin
1986 Morrow County Chronicles, Volume V
Pages 35-42
Morrow County Historical Society
Edward Jones, age 22, was killed on Thanksgiving night, November, 1889, during a savage brawl which broke out as a result of an argument which took place in a card game at the Lexington Saloon. The man who killed Jones was Hiram Harper, a young ranch hand who developed no permanent roots in the community. In the early days of the West, poker games often led to the kind of trouble that no one really wanted. This poker game surely did. In the group of players at the gambling table were Jones, Harper and Art Minor.
Art, the son of Ellis Minor, a pioneer stockman of Morrow County, was barely 21 at the time of this incident. He had a considerable distance to travel yet before he arrived at the respectability he later earned. The card game was terminated when the argument reached the intensity that made it impossible to continue the play. Apparently, Ed Jones was the loser of the argument, and in a rage. Jones left the saloon. It was to his own undoing that he returned a few moments later.
When Ed came back to the saloon, he had with him his younger brother, Newt Jones. Newt was not yet 21, be he could pass for 21. Newt was already building up a reputation as one who should be given a wide berth. Hiram Harper was standing at the bar when the two men entered the saloon. Ed Jones ordered drinks for his party, and in due course, spoke to Harper. Harper's reply was most likely an expletive that would have been deleted in print. Whatever it was that Harper said, the reply was definitely not satisfactory, as both Newt and Ed suddenly attacked Harper in a savage manner.
Harper was knocked forward against the bar as the two rained blow after blow upon Harper's head and face. Harper then covered his head with both arms, while burying his elbows on the bar. Ed swung himself to the top of the bar, and while standing above Harper, proceeded to kick his victim in the face, while Newt continued the attack from below.
Harper, badly beaten, and who was one bloody mess, managed to break away from his assailants for the brief instant it took to draw his revolver. Harper held the gun on both men, and ordered them to back away and stop the fight, or he would shoot. The brothers ignored the warning, and jumped Harper a second time. Harper pulled the trigger. A slug struck Ed in the left groin, knocking him out of the way. Bystanders carried Ed to a chair in the saloon where he soon gave up the ghost.
Two more shots were fired as Newt wrestled with Harper for possession of the gun. One slug was fired into the floor; the other into the ceiling. At this point Art Minor entered the fight. He picked up a chair and struck Harper over the head with it. Harper was dazed and fell back into the stove with such force that it was knocked from its base. The stove pipe came clattering to the floor. The chair was shattered.
Art Minor's contribution enabled Newt to gain possession of the gun. Newt attempted to shoot Harper, but the gun did not fire. During the scuffle for possession of the gun, the cylinder pin had fallen out, thus making it impossible for the cylinder to revolve. Newt then proceeded to beat Harper over the head with the butt of the gun until he was stopped by bystanders.
Attention was then given the lifeless body of Ed Jones. The slug which had entered his left groin had come out through his right hip.
Harper was beaten very severely, and blood was streaming from his many cuts and bruises. He made his way through the rear door of the saloon, climbed over a board fence, and got to his hotel where he was washed and was treated for his injuries.
Colonel C.C. Boon, the town constable, was summoned, as Harper wanted the protection of the law. Harper was placed under arrest by Boon when he arrived at the hotel. Meanwhile, Harper was tracked to the hotel by the trail of blood. A crowd of angry young men gathered in the street in front of the hotel. They wanted to finish the job on Harper.
So far as is known, this was Lexington's only chance to stage a lynching, and they blew it. In the confusion that followed, while Colonel Boon held off the crowd, Harper was left unattended. Fearful for his life, Harper fled the hotel and "took to the hills". The angry crowd that formed in front of the hotel had overlooked the possibility that Harper might escape through the back door.
After it was discovered the Harper was gone, a manhunt was undertaken. The search was give up after daybreak when it became apparent that Harper was nowhere in Lexington. Harper had gone up Blackhorse Canyon and headed for Ben Swaggart's ranch seven miles northeast of Lexington. He knew Ben, and he felt he would be safe in Ben's protection. More than likely, Ben could have held quite a crowd at bay with that old black snake he used to wear coiled around his neck.
Ben knew what it was to kill a man. Ben had taken a man's life in a Weston saloon prior to taking up his homestead near Lexington. This circumstance in Ben's life many have been the reason for his intense dislike for the saloon, a fact which was reported in The Bunchgrassers. Not reported in The Bunchgrassers was the certainty that Ben had once been a participant in a killing. At the time the material for The Bunchgrassers was being gathered, the writer was unsure of his facts in this regard, and not locating historical evidence upon with to base an assertation, the matter was glossed over as the reader might correctly assume. Lawrence Reaney, a friend and admirer of Ben Swaggart, has since confirmed the story of that event in Ben's life.
Hiram Parker experienced great difficulty in reaching the Swaggart ranch. It took Harper the better part of 24 hours to travel those seven miles. He wandered around the bunch-grass hills, sometimes in circles. He had endured quite a beating the Lexington Saloon, and the effects of this beating left him dazed and unsure of this route. Ben put Harper up for the night, and on the following morning the two men rode to Heppner where Harper placed himself in the care and custody of Sheriff Howard.
On Monday, December 2, 1889, a preliminary hearing was held in the court of Justice William Blair in Lexington. The court found there was not sufficient evidence to hold Harper for the grand jury, thus the case was closed. It may well be that Harper reasoned the case might be reopened at any time should he by chance run into Newt Jones or any of his friends, so Harper shook the dust of Lexington from his boots, taking up residence elsewhere.
Edward Jones was 22 years of age at the time he met his death in the Lexington Saloon. His funeral and burial took place in Heppner the same day as Harper's preliminary hearing in Lexington. Jones had lived the previous two years on the ranch one mile below Lexington which was to become known as the Andrew Reaney place.
Jones left a wife and child. He was married to Rose Donaldson, a daughter of Samuel Donaldson, after whom Donaldson Canyon was named. Rose was 16 when she became the bride of Edward Jones in1887. The couple moved to the Lexington ranch at that time. The widow Jones later married Walter Richardson at Heppner. Their daughter, the late Josephine Mahoney Baker, was a well known resident of Heppner for many years. At the time of her passing, Rose was the wife of Hank Howell, a one-time sheep tender and shearer in the Heppner area.
The father of Edward Jones was James Jones, a pioneer landholder on Willow Creek. In addition to the Lexington property, James Jones owned land southeast of Heppner. It was about 1890 that he inaugurated Heppner's first milk delivery from the ranch known in later years as the Frank Monahan place which Terry Thompson owned and then sold to the Corps of Engineers so that Willow Creek Dam could be built. The milk wagon was nothing more than a buckboard which carried five gallon milk cans on the back. The milk was measured out in bulk to those Heppner customers who did not keep a family cow.
Newt Jones lived in and around Heppner until sometime after the turn of the century. By occupation he was a horse trader. Using information based on stories told by old timers, Newt was an expert horseman, and not in actuality the rough and tough hombre the reader of this article may envision. Newt, like many others who grew to maturity during the early days of this country had his moments when youthful brashness led to extremes in behavior. According to his birthday, October 22, 1869, as given in his obituary, Newt had just turned 20 when the saloon fight took place.
Newt's widow was the late Josie Jones who returned to Heppner to make her home after Newt's passing. Josie was the charming date for Les Matlock when the two long-time friends attended public functions. Her daughter was the late Venice Stiles.
--------------
The killing of Edward Jones in a saloon fight at Lexington in 1889 was reported in The Bungrassers in an abbreviated manner since the many facts required for a good story were unknown at the time the book was published. The historical notes that were available to the writer at that time suggested that here was a killing that seemed truly typical of the portrayals one sees so often in Westerns, both on the screen and on television. Continuing research to make the full story come to life was made through the facilities of the University of Oregon, the Oregon Historical Society, and the Morrow County Museum. Thus, we now have the story as it was known to the people of Lexington and Morrow County in 1889.

A. LINCOLN SWAGGART
Among the prominent farmers in Umatilla county is A. Lincoln Swaggart, who is a native of Oregon, his birth having occurred in Land county, August 15, 1862, a son of Nelson and Mary A. (Harper) Swaggart. Nelson Swaggart was born in Pennsylvania, while his wife was a native of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. When a young man Nelson Swaggart removed to Illinois, where he followed farming and was here married. In 1852 he decided to come west and joined an emigrant train, making the journey by way of the old Oregon Trail. Arriving in Oregon, he settled near Eugene in Lane county, where he took up a section donation claim, on which he built a log house and there resided until 1875. At this time he removed to a ranch near Athena, where he raised stock. This ranch was situated on Lamar Gulch and consisted of one hundred and sixty acres. On this land he built a box house and remained here for three years, bringing his land to a high state of cultivation and bing quite successful with his stock. From this ranch he removed to the Willamette valley, where he remained for two years at the termination of which time he returned to his stock farm, to which he gradually added until he had six hundred acres, part of which was sown in wheat. nelson Swaggart retired from active life some years before his death and purchased a home in Pendleton, where he became a prominent and well known citizen. His death occurred at the advanced age of ninety-six years and his wife passed away at the age of eighty-six, having survived him for a number of years. Throughout his life Mr. Swggart gave his allegience to the democratic party, in the interests of which he took an active part.
A. Lincoln Swaggart spent his boyhood on the old farm and received his education in the schools of that vicinity. Until reaching man's estate he was engaged in assisting his father on the farm, but at that time he purchased some cattle and removed to Morrow county, where he remained three years, when he returned to Umatilla county and took up his present ranch of one hundred and sixty acres adjoining his father's. He built a box house on this land, hauling the timber from the mountains, and he brought his farm up to a high state of cultivation. He has added eighty acres to the original tract and now has a well improved farm with all modern conveniences. In 1900 he commenced the breeding of Poland China hogs and in this venture has achieved more than a substantial amount of success.
In 1885 Mr. Swaggart was united in marriage to Miss Mary Vancleave, daughter of marion and Caroline (Krupp) Vancleave, and a native of Des Moines, Iowa. mr. Vancleave was born in Indiana and his wife was also a native of that state. After their marriage they farmed in Indiana for some time and then came west as members of an overland emigrant train. In 1865 they located in the Willamette valley and there the father took up a homestead, which he operated a number of years, and then sold and removed near Weston. He then took up a ranch of one hundred and sixty acres, which he improved and operated, finally selling it and moving to the home of his son, William, in Spokane, Washington, where he passed away in 1898. mrs. Vancleave died six years previous. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Swaggart four children were born; Mrs. M. L. Akers of Pendleton; Frank, Blanch and Wayne.
Since age co0nferred upon Mr. Swaggart the right of franchise he has been a member of the democratic party, in the interests of which he has taken an active part, although he has neith sought nor desired public office. His fraternal affiliations are with the Odd Fellows and the Masons and he is director of the Poland China Breeder's Association. In the financial circles of Athena Mr. Swaggart is prominent, being vice president of the Athena State Bank.

Clarence Leroy Andrews was named for Clarence B. Bagley, Secretary of the Department of Public Works of the City of Seattle. Clarence B. Bagley's mother, Susan R. (Whipple) Bagley, was the sister of Clarence Leroy Andrews' maternal grandfather, Albert Whipple.
He lived on the farm of his stepfather, Alexander Brandon, at Ward's Butte near Plainview, Linn County, Oregon from 1867 to 1882. He completed his education at Philomath College in PhiIomath, Oregon, where his stepfather was a trustee. He is listed as a member of Alexander Brandon's household in the 1880 federal census for Shedd, Linn County, Oregon. In 1882 he went to Seattle, Washington. There he accepted a position as mailing clerk, filling it eight months.
In 1883, Clarence Andrews removed to Heppner, Morrow County, Oregon. He was elected Morrow County Clerk in 1886 as a Republican and reelected in 1888.
Much of Clarence Andrews' life was spent in Alaska, which became the subject of most of his writings. He first visited Alaska in July 1892. He was with the party of the Duke of Abruzzi in his pioneering ascent of Mt. St. Elias in 1897. For the next 12 years, he worked for the U.S. Customs Service in the District of Alaska. In this capacity, he obtained an intimate knowledge of the territory.
For two years, Clarence Leroy Andrews worked for the "Alaska-Yukon Magazine." This was followed by five years of newspaper and photography work in Alaska. As a result of his intimate knowledge of Alaska, he was selected to work with the Alaska Department of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at Seattle in 1909.
Clarence Andrews is listed as a boarder in the Ossian J. Carr residence in the 1910 federal census for Seattle enumerated April 22, 1910. He is male, white, age 47, a widower, born in Ohio, his father born in Ohio, his mother born in Pennsylvania, a clerk in the post office.

He is a male, white, age 57, a widower, can read and write, born in Ohio, his father born in Ohio, his mother born in Pennsylvania, can speak English, a clerk working at home.
From 1923 to 1929, he was again active in Alaska with the Bureau of Education and Reindeer Service. He engaged in a campaign of many years to protect the Eskimo-owned reindeer herds.
"Clarence Leroy Andrews" is listed as a lodger in the 1930 federal census
for Seattle enumerated April 5, 1930. He is male, white, aged 67, divorced, first married at age 24, born in Ohio, his father born in Ohio, his mother born in Pennsylvania, occupation 'none."

His principal work was "The Story of Alaska," a complete history of the territory. He also wrote the "Story of Sitka, Wrangell and the Gold of the Cassiar, Nuggets of Verse Panned from the Gravels of the Past," as well as many articles for newspapers and magazines. Collections of his photographs and papers, including his manuscript biography of Alexander Baranof, are located at the University of Oregon Library at Eugene, the University of Washington Library at Seattle, and the Andrews Library at Sitka, Alaska.

Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1952 > August > 10, page 8
Mention of branding irons will sooner or later come around to what is the oldest iron still in use. It fell to the lot of the late A. W. "Nelly" Neson to record on these pages the account of what could well be the oldest for the area covered by this newspaper. Nelson's "Random Observations" column of May 1947 reported the following story:
The Swaggarts of Eastern Oregon employed a branding iron which has been used since 1812, and that beats anything in old brands this corner has heard about. The facts about this 135-year old implement came to light after this page published an article about the remarkable collection of branding-iron imprints gathered and used as "mural" material by the Krouse Machine Shop of Pomeroy. Frank Swaggart of Athena immiately mailed a description and history of his family brand to the Krouses after reading the article.
The brand is a numeral "2" over a bar. Of it. Frank Swaggart told the Krouses: "Nelson Swaggart used this brand in Kentucky in 1812: then to Illinois in 1846; then to Eugene, Oregon and from there to Weston, where it was used on the Swaggart homestead in Lamar Gulch. It was used by Link Swaggart, and Milt and Ben. I have used it 50 years.
"It is recorded in Morrow County where it is used by my son Gerald and in Grant County by my son Murl. I use it on my race horses here at Athena. My thirteen grandchildren say the will continue its use."
