OHN WESLEY THORNBURY:Served with the Alabama Militia in the Mexican War, participating in the battles of Tobasco, Vera Cruz, Palo Alto, Buena Vista, Cerocordo, Churubusco, Chapultepec, and San Pascual.
He went west in 1851, serching for gold. He worked as a Wagon Master on pioneer wagon trains for a time, finally settling in French Prarie, OR. He later moved to Gervais, Marion Co., OR, where he farmed and raised cattle and hogs.

A.B. ROTHROCK.
Among the highly esteemed residents of Wa.lla Walla is A. B. Rothrock, who is now renting his large farm and is living retired after many years devoted to agricultural pursuits. He was born in Marion county, Oregon, June 5, I870, a son of A. B. and Lucretia C. (Cox) Rothrock, natives respectively of North Carolina and Kentucky. The father's birth occurred in I816 and in I839 he removed to Illinois, which at that time was still largely unsettled. In I863 he once more moved westward, going to Iowa, and two years later he was again numbered with the pioneers, crossing the plains in that year to Oregon. He engaged in farming for some time in Marion county, that state, but in 1868 removed to Umatilla county, where he developed a large herd of cattle, becoming one of the leading cattlemen of that section. When the country became so thickly settled that the free ranges disappeared, he turned his attention to wheat growing and in that connection, too, won prominence and prosperity. He was a man of such energy and such unusual soundness of judgment that he gained a position of leadership in whatever he undertook. In his later years he removed to Weston in order to give his children better school advantages and there his death occurred in 1891. His widow survived for many years, dying in 1912.
A. B. Rothrock was reared at home and after attending the district schools continued his education in the Oregon State Normal School at Weston. He received practical training of great value under his father, as from boyhood he homesteaded the latter in his extensive farming operations. After reaching mature years he continued to work with his father until he was about twenty-five years old, when he began farming independently, renting the home farm of four hundred acres. In I902 he purchased three hundred and sixty-nine acres of land In Umatilla county, which he farmed in connection with the home place, the successful management of the seven hundred and sixty-nine acres of land requmng his undivided time and attention. He continued to reside upon the home farm until 1909, when he removed with his family to Walla Walla in order to the better educate his children. He continued, however, to give personal supervision to the cultivation of his farm in Umatilla county, Oregon. In I905 he purchased the homestead and now owns about eight hundred acres of land, which he is renting, as he feels that he has earned a period of leisure. The success which he gained as a farmer was due to the same qualities of foresight, energy and close application to his work that characterize the prosperous business man and he has always felt that agriculture should be recogmzed as having the same status as other industries.

On the 25th of August, I897, Mr. Rothrock was married to Miss May Steen. a daughter of Milton Steen, one of the pioneer farmers of Umatilla county. To this union have been born four children Velma S., who was graduated from the Walla Walla high school with the class of I917; Forrest B. and Arthur, who are attending the Sharpstein school; and James S. Mr Rothrock gives his political allegiance to the democratic party but hats never cared to take an active part in public affairs. JOHN MILTON CULBERTSON
Although not yet forty-one years of age, John M. Culbertson, head of the firm of John M. Culbertson & Company, is the pioneer real estate dealer of Hood River, Oregon. He was born at Fort Worth, Texas, in 1879, a son of Elijah and Helen (Curtner) Culbertson, natives of Indiana in which state their families had been pioneers as they themselves were of Texas. An early member of the family, John Culbertson, was among the first settlers of Indiana, locating in that state when the Indians were giving considerable trouble to new settlers. He was engaged in the mercantile business and built the first store in Fort Worth, Texas, the store being afterward used as the first courthouse of Tarrant county for the transaction of legal business.
John M. Culbertson was educated in the schools of Fort Worth and the university of that city, from which he was graduated. On the completion of his university course, he engaged in the mercantile business with his brother until 1904, when the state of his health caused his retirement. Coming to the Pacific Coast, he visited Hood River, and liking its situation and climate, he decided to make his home here and has since been a resident of this city. In partnership with his brother, he started a real estate, loan and insurance business, which has grown to be the largest in the Hood River valley. After a few years his brother removed to Portland and is there engaged in the same business on his own account.
John M. Culbertson has sold more valuable land and has been the means of bringing more settlers to Hood River than any other man in the county, and in the matter of making loans, the funds at his disposal have more than once saved many a farmer and orchardist who might have gone under had it not been for the financial assistance rendered by Mr. Culbertson. His own land holdings in the Hood River valley comprise some six hundred and ten acres of fine land, laid out to orchard, hay and strawberries, the produce procuring a ready market at all times.
In civic matters Mr. Culbertson is as prominent and practical as in business life. He is a director of Hood River Commercial Club, in the affairs of which he takes a warm interest. He was an excellent worker in all the bond and Red Cros drives during the World war, and in other directions gave of his time and ability to further the public welfare. He is an earnest member of the Congregational church and fraternally is identified with the Elks, the Masonic order and the Sons of the American Revoultion, being entitled to the last named honor through one of his ancestors being an officer in the war of the Revolution.
In 1910 Mr. Culbertson was united in marriage to Miss Mary Rothrock, a nation daughter of Oregon and a graduate of University of Oregon. They are the parents of one child, Mary Alene, not yet of school age. Mr. and Mr. Culbertson are prominent in the social life of Hood River and give their practical support to all movements having the welfare of the community at heart.

HARLEY COLEMAN ROTHROCK
Harley Coleman Rothrock, residing on his farm three miles north of Adams in Umatilla county, was born on this place on the 8th of September, 1883, a son of Lewis and Ida (Bolin) Rothrock. The father was born in 1850 in Springfield, Illinois, while the mother is a native of Willamette valley. Lewis Rothrock lived with his father and stepmother in Iowa and when he was fifteen years of age they crossed the plains in ox drawn wagons, joining a wagon train at Springfield, Missouri. The train followed the old Oregon Trail and the settlers experienced many Indian scares. Their horses were driven off and likewise some of their cattle but they managed to escape massacre. An incident of this journey which nearly resulted in destruction of the entire wagon train occurred when a member of the train shot an Indian squaw. The Indians demanded the surrender of this man and he was turned over to them, concession to this demand being the only way in which the other members of the train could save their lives. On reaching Wyoming the train divided and the Rothrock family continued on the Oregon Trail, finally settling near Salem. Here Lewis Rothrock resided with his parents for two years, at the end of which time he removed to Umatilla county and engaged in freighting from points in that county to Boise, Idaho. For one year he followed this line of work, in which he achieved a substantial amount of success and he then followed packing from Walla Walla, Washington, to Boise, Idaho, for one year. For some time he resided near where Athena now stands but he later took up a timber culture claim which is Harley Coleman Rothrock’s present ranch. This tract consisted of one hundred and sixty acres and on this land he built a substantial box house. He ran large numbers of horses for some time. Before taking up this claim Lewis Rothrock had worked for George Bernhardt on a ranch near here for a period of six years and received much of his practical experience while in his employment. Lewis Rothrock added to this claim until he had nine hundred and ninety-six acres, which he improved and finally brought to a high state of cultivation. Lewis Rothrock and Lee Mitchell were the only white people who remained on their ranches during the Indian war of 1878. They built a cave fort for protection in case of attack. Lewis Rothrock operated this land until 1898, when he rented it to his sons and went to Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Rothrock are now, however, residing in Los Angeles, California, prominent and highly respected citizens of their community. Mr. Lewis Rothrock has always maintained an interest in the Democratic Party and is a firm believer in the principles of that party as factors in good government.
The boyhood of Harley Coleman Rothrock was spent on his present ranch and he received his education in the country schools of the community. He assisted his father on the farm until he was eighteen years of age, when he rented a farm and in 1917 bought a half section. In the fall of 1919 he purchased one hundred and sixty acres more and is now operating a large acreage, as he leases additional tracts. He uses only the most modern and up-to-date machinery and has put up all new buildings and made many other improvements.
In 1904 Mr. Rothrock was united in marriage to Miss Blanche Bailey, a daughter of Joseph and Ella (Hay) Bailey, and a native of Forest Grove, Oregon. Two children have been born to this union: Ralph and Robert.
Since age conferred upon Mr. Rothrock the right of franchise he has been a stanch supporter of the Democratic Party, in the interests of which he has taken an active part. The only fraternal affiliation of Mr. Rothrock is with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Although the greater part of Mr. Rothrock’s time has been devoted to his agricultural pursuits he is prominent and active in the business circles of Adams, being a director as well as vice president of the Inland Mercantile Company store in that place. Mr. Rothrock thoroughly understands every phase of farm work and his close application, energy and enterprise are dominant elements in whinning for him his present-day success. He has kept in touch with the trend of modern progress along agricultural lines and has a well equipped and highly developed ranch three miles north of Adams.
