SUICIDE OF A PROMINENT FARMER NEAR VANCOUVER
Vancouver, W. T., April 21. - Jacob Proebstel, an old Clark county pioneer of 1852, committed suicide about 6 A.M. to-day, at his farm, six miles from here, on the Fourth Plain road. He got up early, and said "Good morning" to his hired man, who went out doors. Mr. Proebstel returned to his bedroom, where his wife was sleeping, secured a revolver, came to the washstand on the porch and while looking in a glass which hung there shot himself, the bullet ranging from the right to the left temple. Death was instantaneous. The man came in and found him lying dead. The wife and daughter had not heard the pistol's report and were terribly shocked when called to see their husband and father cold in death.
Mr. Proebstel was a greatly respected citizen, a prosperous farmer, and an honored member of the Masonic order. He leaves a wife and nine children, all grown. He has been unwell for some time, and during the last six months has been engaged in litigation, resulting the taking of some property by some of his neighbors, at great expense and trouble. That preyed upon him constantly, and together they unsettled the old gentleman's mind and he put an end to his troubles.
He was born at Bingen-on-the-Rhine, November 17, 1817. He will be buried by the Masons at 2 o'clock Monday. He has two brothers in Grand Ronde valley, Oregon

The Proebstel Brothers
From the Columbian, date unknown.
German brothers named Proebstel, their wives and offspring made up one of the largest families settling in Clark County [in Washington state, USA] in the early days. A community east of Orchards was named for the family, and a church still carries the Proebstel name.
Four brothers arrived here from Missouri in time to take donation land claims in the early 1850s. Andrew took out a claim just northwest of Orchards, and John, Valentine and Jacob Proebstel settled near what is now Proebstel. Andrew departed in several years for the Midwest, and his land was purchased by Jacob Proebstel.
At least two other Proebstel brothers also lived in Clark County in the early days.
J.C. Proebstel, born in 1854, a son of John Proebstel, remembered that the family residence was a log cabin chinked with mud and moss to keep out skunks, wood rats and bad weather. Indians were the nearest neighbors, and wolves, bears and cougars prowled the Proebstel area.
J.C. Proebstel also recalled:
Our roads were pack trails. We subsisted chiefly on game and fish and berries. Our stock fed on the grass and the native meadows. To establish our livestock we would exchange pigs for calves, colts for cows, and cow and a calf for a horse.
A visitor to the Proebstel area in 1876 reported Jacob Proebstel Sr. was growing grain and clover. At the nearby John Proebstel farm, the owner had cleared a large amount of brush and logs. He told the visitor 'there is no country in the world' he preferred to that area.
A post office named Proebstel was established in 1886 with Francis and Herman Proebstel, two sons of John Proebstel, in charge at the start. Several other postmasters also were on duty before the office was discontinued in 1907.
Although farming was the Proebstels' main occupation in the earliest days, some of the family eventually went to Vancouver. William W. Proebstel was proprietor of the Exchange Hotel on Main Street between Third and Fourth streets in the 1880s, and the Reception Saloon in the same vicinity in the '90s. Andrew J. Proebstel, son of Jacob Proebstel Sr., also was active in the business district.
He worked for a while for his brother, Jacob Jr., who owned a general merchandise store, and later was in business with partners at several stores. He aided his son-in-law, Frank Wilcox, in establishing an auto company in 1907 and spent much time in that business in later years, in addition to serving as bailiff at Clark County Court.

ILLIAM FREDERICK PROEBSTEL:http://www.rootsweb.com/~ormultno/People/PNW/Proebstel.htm
DR. WILLIAM PROEBSTEL.-- Few among our early residents have been more serviceable to society than the gentleman whose name appears above. He was born in Germany in 1829, and is the son of a wine-grower. He received his primary education in the old country, and at the age of thirteen migrated to America, locating in Missouri, remaining there ten years, and receiving from the common schools the rudiments of an English education. He also took a course in dentistry.
In 1852 he crossed the plains to Oregon, locating at Portland. The next spring, with two brothers, he purchased the present site of Albina. In 1855 Mr. Proebstel was one of a party of independent scouts who figured in Clarke county during the Indian troubles of 1855-56, after which he removed to The Dalles, engaging in the grocery business, which he conducted eighteen months. In the fall of 1857 be bought a section of land six miles from Vancouver, and engaged in farming. In 1861 he married Miss Lucinda F. Nessly, who crossed the plains with her parents in 1852, and made her Oregon home at Scappoose.
He removed to the Grande Ronde valley in the fall of 1863, and located a mile north of La Grande, where he has resided ever since, and now owns five hundred and twenty acres of land well improved and stocked. He made a speciality of stock-raising until the range was eaten out, varying the monotony by practicing dentistry. He has five children; and his present home is one indicative of refinement and happiness. His numerous friends are always entertained in true pioneer style.

WILLIAM PROEBSTEL -- In the word, pioneer, is wrapped more real substance and genuine meaning than perhaps in any other word of the English language. Its pronunication brings vividly before us weary days of marching throught the trackless wastes of western desert, enduring the pain of hunger, thirst and waning strength, although courage was never less to the pioneer and the buoyancy of hope never shone dimmer than when first its vision lured him to turn his face from civilization and begin the pilgrim journey toward the setting sun. What scenes of herculean struggles when the destination was reached, when from the wildness of nature there was a rude home carved to shelter the hardy subjects until little by little the comforts of life could be added. What days and nights of anxiety were spent in watching and fighting the savages who roamed but to destroy. All this, and much more were the experiences of these noble men and women, who gave to us this good land of plenty and peace. As a leading figure and worthy representtative of this class, stands the subject of this sketch, and what more could we say, and surely he deserves no less, than that William Proebstel was a pioneer in every true sense of the word and in the place where he wrought with such indefatibable energy and true integrity, there he has grown venerable and now enjoys the proper fruits of his toil.
In Germany, in 1829, our subject was born and there acquired his education and spent the years of his childhood until 1842, when he accompanied his parents to the United STates, settling in Clay county, Missouri. Some time after their arrival, in the year 1852, it is stated, the mother with her little flock of eight children, gathered their substance together and undertook the long and wearisom journey to the land of the Pacific coast. Hardships of the arduous journey were easy to bear when they were all together, and day after day they steadily pursued the journey westward having no particular accident nor trouble until one day the mother sickened. All that her loving children, eight sons, could do was done but all to no avail for the disease refused to be checked and the messenger of death rudely stepped into their midst and snatched away the beloved mother. Words can hardly portray the unutterable sadness and loneliness that settled on that little group of broken hearted children when they were forced to lay in the grave by the old emmigrant trail the remains of their cherished and dearly beloved mother. The rude instruments of burial improvised for the occasion, the cheerless plain with its desert waste of loneliness and above all the sickening pain of death itself, were things never to be forgotten. It was a bowed heads and breaking hearts that they tore themselves from the sacred spot and slowly took up the cheerless journey to the west. In due time they reached the Willamette Valley and the older sons later took land near Portland, which has since become the Proebstel addition to that flourishing city. Our subject remained there four years and then went to Clark county, Washington, and brought a section of land where he labored until 1863, then came to his present place in Union County. He has given his attention to farming and stock raising here continuously since. His farm consists of five hundred and twenty acres, all well improved and skillfully handled. He now rents the land, having retired from active labor, and lives in a home on his farm, whence he attends to the oversight of his estates.
In 1862, Mr. Proebstel married Miss Lucinda Nessley, a native of Ohio, whose parents were pioneers to the west. To them have been born five children: Emory, Frank F., Hattie, Wendel P., and Molly. Mr. Proebstel is one of the highly esteemed citizens of the county and has always labored faithfully for the interests of the county and the welfare of all.

FREDERICK PROEBSTEL.-- This pioneer of the Wallowa valley was born in Germany in 1829, and with his parents emigrated to America in 1842 and located in Missouri. In 1852 he made the crossing of the plains to Lewis county, Washington Territory, locating on Fourth Plain. Mr. Proebstel, belonging to the family of this name, a number of whose biographies arc found in this volume, shared many experiences in common with the others, and was one of the Indian fighters of 1855-56, and wishes to bear special testimony to the liberality of the Hudson's Bay Company during the hard winter of 1852, when many must have suffered without their assistance.
Of the many stories which he tells with feeling and humor in regard to the early settlement of the Wallowa valley, the following are specimens: His niece, returning home from the log schoolhouse one evening, was met face to face by a panther. Being near home, she called to her father, and meantime struck the animal with one of her school books. The stroke and the scream caused the panther to slink away; and the father, coming quickly with his gun, secured a fine skin. In 1879 Mr. Proebstel drove his herds to the Imnaha, a portion of the Wallowa country, in order to obtain open range. There he stayed for four years, and while there was much annoyed by grizzly bears and panthers. The grizzlies were frequently disposed of by setting fifty-pound steel traps in a pen, wherein was fresh meat bait, and also a large hog at the opening. The bear usually put his fore foot into the trap as he attempted to gain the bait, or was lured on by the hog. Occasionally panthers were caught in this way; and one is mentioned, both of whose hind feet were thus pinioned, so as to make it impossible for him to tear open the dogs' bodies, as he could have done without this hindrance.

The funeral of Frederick Proebstel, who died Monday at his home, 1680 Peninsula avenue, was held yesterday. He had been a resident of Oregon for the past 59 years, and had lived most of that time in and near Portland. He was born in Germany,
December 29, 1829, being the youngest of a family of 10 children and came to the United States when 11 years old, living in Missouri until 1852, when with a number of pioneers he crossed the plain to Portland. He had lived in Multnomah,
Wallowa and Union counties, and the last ll years were spent on Columbia Slough. He is survived by a widow and three children - Andrew and Lester Proebstel and Mrs. O. Clearwater, of Portland. The funeral was held from the family residence
and the burial was made in Riverview Cemetery.

MARY E. PROEBSTEL
MARY E. PROEBSTEL. - Among those who have displayed ability to handle successfully a stock raising business and general farming stands prominently the lady whose name is at the head of this article, and it now becomes our pleasant privilege to outline her life's career wherein she has ever manifested both graciousness and capability, ever showing forth those priceless qualities of noble womanhood and faithfully performing the portion alloted to her hands during her pilgrimmage.
Mrs. Mary E. Proebstel was born in 1835 in the state of Ohio, and remained in the place of her infancy but five years. Her parents then revmoed to Iowa, and upon the prairies of that progressive commonwealth she spent the days of her girlhood, receiving a good education from the public schools there existing, and ever manifesting the graces and wisdom so characteristic of her entire pilgrimage. In September, 1865, she came to the Grande Ronde valley, and there met and married Mr. Frederic W. Proebstel. To them were born the following children who are living: Dolly R., now wife of Thomas R. Rich; Ida, wife of James Estes; John: Minnie C.: and the oldest daughter, who died when they lived in Colorado. About 1870 they removed to Wallowa county, taking a homestead four miles east from Joseph. Here they settled down to general farming and stock raising, and success has attended their industrious efforts, and their real estate holdings have doubled, and in addition to that they have eighty acres of timber, while their herds and flocks have multiplied. It is pleasant to see the success attendant upon efforts of industry and untiring care that has been the lot of our subject to enjoy. Mrs. Proebstel is one of the highly esteemed ladies of the county, and her wise procedure and kindly character have made her beloved to all.
Mrs. Probestel is the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Hull, who were old pioneers of the Grande Ronde valley and there died.

Mary E. Proebstel
The funeral of Mrs. Mary E. Proebstel was held in Joseph Monday afternoon with Rev. J. Fred Stilwell officiating. Mrs. Proebstel, one of the earliest settlers of Wallowa county, died in Pendleton some time ago.
It has often been stated that she was the first white woman to come to the valley and make her home. In the History of Union and Wallowa Counties, published about twenty years ago, a short sketch of Mrs. Proebstel's life up to that time is given, and the following account is extracted therefrom:
Mrs. Mary E. Proebstel was born in 1835 in Carroll County, state of Ohio, and remained in the place of her infancy for five years. Her parents then removed to Iowa and upon the prairies of that progressive commonwealth she spent the days of her girlhood, receiving a good education in the public schools there existing. In September 1865, she came to the Grande Ronde valley and there met and married Frederic W. Proebstel. To them were born the following children: Dolly R. (Mrs. Thomas Rich, deceased); Ida, wife of J. C. Estes; John, deceased; Minnie C., wife of D. G. Tucker.
About 1870 they removed to Wallowa county, taking a homestead four miles east of Joseph. Here they settled down to general farming and stock raising. Success attended their efforts until their real estate holdings were doubled, and addition to that they acquired eighty acres of timber.
Mrs. Proebstel was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Hull, old pioneers of the Grande Ronde valley. She was 89 years, 11 months and 26 days of age at the time of death, lacking but four days of reaching the 90th milestone. She was a typical pioneer, braving hardships experienced only by those who fought their way into a new country ahead of the advancing civilization. Before an accident which left her crippled for the balance of her life there were none who sought refuge at Mrs. Proebstel's home but who obtained it. She was ever ready to assist the needy, and it was in pursuit of a mission of kindness that she was thrown from her horse and received a broken arm and a broken hip. For years in the early history of this valley Mrs. Proebstel was doctor and nurse to many of the pioneer families.
Thus passes another respected pioneer mother.

GEORGE W. PROEBSTEL.--The subject of this sketch was born upon a farm in Missouri in 1842. When ten years old he crossed the plains with his father, Jacob Proebstel, driving an ox-team and experiencing the usual hardships attending such a trip. On one occasion he saw his mother pay a dollar a pound for flour, which was hard to secure even at that price. It was the Fourth of July that his party reached Independence Rock, and found there a large train celebrating the holiday with music and dancing. The behavior of the cowboys whom he saw made a lasting impression upon his mind. Arriving in Clarke county in November, the family was obliged to put up with the usual privations of that early day, living on boiled wheat and going barefooted through the rain and snow of that severe winter.
George W. was a participator in the Indian war of 1855, belonging to Captain KellyĆs company; and upon his discharge he found himself in debt fifteen dollars for the clothes which he had worn out in the service. In 1863 he endeavored to find his fortune by repairing to the Idaho mines, and remained as much as five years. Returning to Clarke county in 1868, he married and located a homestead on heavily timbered land, forty acres of which he cleared within ten years. In 1878 he selected a new home at Weston, Umatilla county, and engaged with his brothers in a flouring mill, which was burned four years later. After this he clerked in a store for one year; and, being careful of his earnings, he was enabled to embark in business upon his own account, buying out an extensive hardware business, and establishing a store, which he is at present successfully conducting. Mr. Proebstel is one of the most successful citizens in that locality

HON. GEORGE W. PROEBSTEL -- To this esteemed and patriotic citizen and successful business man we are pleased to accord representation in this volume, both because of his personal ability and achievements in the industrial world, as well as for his prominence in the political arena, having also maintained throughout his long career in this and adjacent counties of life of unsullied reputation and a high standing for morality and integrity.
his birth occurred in Clay county, Missouri, on March 16, 1842, being the son of Jacob and Margaret Proebstel. Ten years later he came across the plains with his parents, who settled in Clarke county, Washington. Their trip from Missouri to this state was attended with much hardship and danger, their oxen giving out, which necessitated much traveling on foot, and then their rations became shortened. However, they reached their destination without the loss of life or limb. In the Indian uprising of 1855-6 our subject did active service in the Washington Rifles, equipping and feeding himself, and has never received a cent for this service from the government. In 1863 he turned to the mines in Idaho for five years, and then came back to his home and took up a homestead, giving himself to tillin and improving the same until 1878, when he removed to Weston. At this place he became interested in a large flouring mill, which burned to the ground four years later. After this heavy loss he entered the hardware business, in which he has achieved a fine success, having gained by his honest and upright methods of business, as well as his geniality, a large and continuoously increasing trade. He has ever taken an active interest in the affairs of the county and the town, serving frequently in public office, where his ability and faithfulness have endeared him to his constituency. He is also director and vice-president of the Bank of Weston, having given invaluable service to that institution.
His marriage occurred on August 10, 1865, when Miss Mary A Dauphoofer, who crossed the plains with her parents in 1854, became his wife. To them have been born the following children: George, married to Miss Jennie Thompson and living in Weston; Lillian, widow of W. S. Fredericks; Lewis C and Cahrles A., members of Company D, Second Oregon Volunteers, who did valiant service for their country in the Philippines during the late Spanish war; Christine; Margaret; Albert; Grace. Mr. Proebstel was called by the people to act as state senator in 1898, serving through the special session of that year, the regular session of 1899 and also the present session. That faithfulness, wisdom and enterprise, so characteristic of the man, were brought out in this excellent service which did credit to the incumbent of the office and was a delight to the constituency. He is a member of the Blue Lodge of Masons, the A. O. U. W. ad the Pioneers of the Pacific. By way of reminiscence, it is well to state that during the first winter in the west Mr. Proebstel distinctly remembers that their diet consisted of wheat straight, such were the hardships of early pioneers. His educational advantages were very small, but what was lacking in opportunity he made up in diligence and applicatin, both during those short days and subsequently. From the courageous boy, without either capital or education, by dint of hard work and pluck has arisen the lawmaker and the business man of affluence.

George participated in the Indian War of 1855, serving with Captain William Kelly in the "Clark County Rangers", Second Regiment of Washington Volunteers. In 1863 he endevored to find his fortune in the Idaho mines, but returned to Clark
County within a short time.

OHN WILLIAM SCHRIEVER:"John William Schriener(sic) was born November 4, 1856 in Santa Claus, Indiana. He came to Kansas in 1883 and married Annie K. Proebstel in 1884. She was born Jan 13, 1863. John left Kansas about 1900 with four wagons and a carryall. They had five boys and three girls and another child was born in Geddis, South Dakota. They had many hardships; hostile Indians gave them trouble but there were some good indians who helped them. Another child was born at Geddis SD. At Cheyenne Crossing on the White River, one wagon came loose and floated downstream. It was stopped at the bend in the river and was repaired and ready to go again. John and two of his brothers worked on the railroad and in lumbercamps in the Black Hills of SD. John's half-brother joined him there and came to North Dakota with the Schrieners. They got to Valley City in 1901. John and his sons worked in the woods in Minnesota in the winter and in the spring they moved to a farm south of Sanborn where three children were born. Mrs. Schriener passed away on April 22, 1910. In 1917 John had an auction sale and then moved to Missouri where he died Feb. 25, 1930. There are still two boys and four girls living."

Two Lucky Men
On the 17th of October this paper announced that lightning had struck in Vancouver, or the same thing, a streak of luck that made some excitement. In September M.C. Harell, a laborer on J.C. Proebstel's farm, bought one-twentieth of ticket No 46,755 in the Louisiana State Lottery, and that number drew the big $300,000 prize on October 9. J. C. Proebstel owns, half of this Harell ticket, which entitles the holder to $15,000. The ticket was deposited for collection with Wells, Fargo & Co.'s express Company, at Portland, Oregon. The collection was promptly honored by the Louisiana State Lottery at new Orleans, and the money, gold coin, is now in Portland ready to be paid over upon proper receipt for it. Both the lucky men are honest grangers, and, as their heads are level, will know just where to put their unexpected wealth to do them the most good. -- Vancouver (Wash. Ter) Independent, Nov 7.

THOMAS F. RICH
THOMAS F. RICH. - In many industries in this western country as well as prosecuting excellent labors in the east before coming here, the subject of this sketch is especially deserving of mention, as he is today one of the leading men of the county, having displayed commendable effort in all of his undertakings, manifesting good qualities in every line and achieving success in every department, while his uprightness and integrity have shown forth constantly. In Worcester county, Massachusetts, Thomas F. was born on January 14, 1838, being the son of Thomas and Prudence (Kinney) Rich, natives also of Massachusetts. The father was a lumberman and farmer and in 1848 went to Wisconsin. Our subject received a good education in the schools of his native place, and clerked in a store until he was twenty-one years of age, then went to Minnesota, thence to Oregon, landing in this state first in 1860. He taught school in Umatilla county, then in 1861 went to Idaho, taking part in mining in that territory for two years, following which he returned to Wisconsin for a visit. Soon after this, he went to Montana and there sought for the hidden treasure for two years more, then returned to Wisconsin, remaining there until the close of the war. Many of the families were destitute at that time, the husbands and older sons being in the conflict of the Civil war, and until that struggle closed, our subject did the commendable work of seeding and attending to the gardens and fields of different families. One season he seeded four hundred acres, all being in small plats. When the war was over, he went to Neosha county, Kansas, and farmed for four years. Then he started to Oregon, but on account of an outbreak of the Indians he decided to await a peaceful settlement before entrusting himself to their attacks. Therefore he settled in Summer county, Kansas, and for ten years farmed. For two years he was fated to see the loss of all of his crops by the grasshoppers and then he went into mercantile business at Wellington, and when he left the town, seven years later, it had grown to the size of two thousand five hundred people, it being but a hamlet when he first went to it. He sold out and came to Oregon, landing in this state in 1880. He at once came to Wallowa county and opened a store at Prairie creek, east from Joseph, continuing there for five years. He and F.D. McCully opened establishments about the same time. In 1885 he sold out and came to Imnaha and took up land, but could not use his homestead right until some ten years later when it was surveyed. Mr. Rich has steadily been improving his property since his settlement and now has one of the best farms in the vicinity of Fruita. It has one of the largest orchards in the country and it produces abundantly. Mr. Rich has also given much attention to stock raising.
Mr. Rich married Miss Sarah M. Martin, a native of Wisconsin, in that state, in the fall of 1865 and they have become the parents of five children, three of whom died in infancy. Those living are Thomas and Jennie, the last one now Mrs. Page. Thomas married Dottie Preobstel on March 23, 1884, and on November 16, 1890, she was snatched by death, and her remains lie buried at Fruita, Colorado. Two children, Edward and Edith F., were the fruit of that union: Mrs. Rich, the wife of our subject, was born April 30,1839, in Pennsylvania. Mr. Rich is a member of the Masons, Wallowa Lodge, No. 82 and of the I.O.O.F., Enterprise Lodge, No. 153. He is highly esteemed by all and is one of the leading men of the county today, being well worthy of the confidence that is generously bestowed on him.
The parents of Mr. Rich came to this county in 1883, and both lie buried in the cemetery near here. The father died February 3, 1888, aged seventy-nine, and the mother died December 13, 1887, aged seventy-eight. Mr. Rich was the first settler in this part of the county, being the first one to bring a family to the park. He had to cross the mountains without roads, and they were nine days in going thirty miles.
