3. WILLIAM CHARLES2 PAINTER (PHILIP CHARLES1) was born 18 Apr 1830 in St. Genevieve, Missouri, and died 04 Dec 1900 in Walla Walla, Walla Walla, WA. He married CAROLINE MITCHELL 24 Dec 1863 in Touchet, Walla Walla, Washington16,17, daughter of ISRAEL MITCHELL and MARY ARNOLD. She was born 09 Jan 1845 in Linn County Iowa, and died 08 May 1934 in Walla Walla, Walla Walla, Washington.
Notes for WILLIAM CHARLES PAINTER:
An illustrated history of Walla Walla County, state of Washington, Pg 327-331
WILLIAM C. PAINTER – Walla Walla county may well be proud of the number of men of spotless integrity and sterling character who have been attracted to its territory, and of the part these have borne in the affairs of county, state and nation. Dr. marcus Whitman is of course the brightest star in the constellation of Walla Walla valley heroes, but around him cluster a great number of stars of but little less magnitude, who in their own spheres and environment were equally entitled to a rank among heroic men. The man whose name initiates this brief and necessarily incomplete review was one in whose life and career the county and state may find reasonable cause for exultation. Mr. Painter’s title to be long remembered by the people of the state of Washington in general and of Walla Walla and vicinity in particular rests not so much upon his achievements in advancing the material interests of his community, though they were very considerable, nor upon his political record, though that was a clean one and of no little importance, but rather upon the pure and lofty patriotism which formed the dominating trait of his character, and upon the work which that ennobling sentiment led him to accomplish.
Mr. Painter was born in the old French settlement of St. Genevieve, St. Genevieve county, Missouri, April 18, 1830, and there the earliest years of his life were passed. His father was a member of the Painter family of mercer county, Pennsylvania, and his mother was Jean (Moore) Painter, daughter of Major Robert Moore, a veteran of the war of 1812, and well known in the early history of Oregon. In 1850 his father and the family started for Oregon, but when the Little Blue river was reached the head of the family and two of the sons succumbed to cholera, and the mother and surviving children continued their journey westward with sore hearts. They finally came to a halt in Washington county, Oregon, where donation land claims were secured, and where William C. lived until 1863. When the Indian war of 1855 broke out, Mr. Painter was one of the first to enlist, becoming a member of Company D, First Oregon Mounted Volunteers, which, it will be remembered, fought the Indians for four days near Walla Walla City, finally routing the redskins, who retreated to the Palouse country. In this and many other fights of that war, Mr. Painter distinguished himself for coolness and bravery. He continued to follow the fortunes of his company and to share its hardships and dangers until the close of hostilities. In 1855 certain young ladies of Forest Grove Academy (now Tualatin Academy and Pacific University) presented the company with a flag; comrades in arms voted that Mr. Painter should become its bearer, it finally came into his exclusive possession and is still carefully preserved in the Painter household as a family relic and heirloom. The flag was designed by Dr. S. H. marsh, first president of Pacific University, and "Grandma" Tabitha Brown, on e of the founders of that institution, and was executed by Misses Jane Kinney, Sarah A Ross, Caroline Brown, Mary J Stott, Mary McGhee, Jane Robinson, Mary Ellen Reed, Georgia Reed, Ellen Robinson, Gus. Mulkey (now wife of U.S. Senator J. N. Dolph) and Mrs. Kitchen. It has only twenty-one stars, and upon its field in large letters are inscribed the words, "Co. D, First Oregon Volls. 1855-6." In the war against the Bannock and Pah Ute Indians, in 1878, Mr. Painter again assumed the role of the Indian fighter. Governor Ferry appointed him captain of a company of forty-two men, and he was assigned to duty on the gunboat Spokane, under the command of Major Cress of the regular army. The first engagement in which he participated was at Long Island in the Columbia River below Umatilla, in which the whites were successful. Major Cress, in a letter written to Mr. Painter from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, dated April 15, 1897, speaks very flatteringly of the assistance rendered him by Colonel Painter. After this engagement, in recognition of his very valuable services, our subject was made aid-de-camp on the staff of Governor Ferry with the rank of lieutenant-colonel and placed in command of fifty-two men. He sent to eastern Oregon to assist in defending the people of that region against the onslaughts of the Indians recently defeated by General O.O. Howard, and passed south of the retreating bands of Camas Prairie with a view to intercepting their retreat. The hostiles, being advised of his position, got around him by a circuitous route and escaped, but the colonel brought back with him to Walla Walla captured horses enough to pay the entire expense of his command. Although no battle was fought in this campaign, it was considered so hazardous that an offer of ten dollars per day for guides was not sufficient to induce any to run the risk. In his official report, General O.O. Howard, quoting Captain John A. Cress, says: "Captain Charles Painter and the forty-two volunteers from Walla Walla deserve praise for good conduct and bravery, not excepting my Vancouver regulars and Captain Gray with officers and crew of the steamer Spokane, who stood firmly at their posts under fire."
But to return to the more ordinary pursuits of life, picking up the thread of the narrative with Mr. Painter’s advent into Walla Walla county in 1863, we have to record that for four years from that date he was a clerk in the employ of Flanders & Felton, of Wallula. When the senior member of that firm was elected to congress in 1867, Mr. Painter took charge of the business, becoming also postmaster at that point and the agent of the Wells Fargo Express Company. Eventually he removed to Walla Walla; that he might the better discharge the duties of an important position, that of deputy collector of internal revenue for eastern Washington, to which he had been appointed. He resigned this deputyship in November, 1870, but his resignation was not accepted until the following May. After retiring from the position, he made some unfortunate investments in mill property, the result of which was that he found himself at the foot of the financial ladder, but his courage and force made him master of the situation. He went cheerfully to work and continued a wage-earner until 1876, when fortune again favored him and he was appointed receiver of the United States land office. This position he retained until September, 1878, and in November of that year he was elected to the office of county auditor. So faithful and efficient were his services that the electors retained him as their choice for that office for four consecutive terms. Speaking of his final retirement, the Waitsburg Times of March 11, 1887, says: "After filling the office of county auditor for four consecutive terms and giving better satisfaction than any of his predecessors -- in fact making the best auditor Walla Walla county ever had – W. C. Painter steps out with clean hands and a good record to make room for L. B. Hawley, a Walla Walla bred young man fully capable of the duties of his office." The Walla Walla Statesman of the same date has this to say concerning him: "Auditor Painter has given up the office of auditor of Walla Walla county, that he has held so many years. As a Republican he has proved capable, efficient and honest, and has been very instrumental in saving the country from being imposed upon on numerous occasions. We do not candidly believe that a dishonest dollar has stuck to his fingers in all the years of his administration. He has been particular to a fault, but goes out of office with the reputation of being an honest man. ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things.’"
Upon retiring from the county service, Mr. Painter devoted his attention to farming his fifteen-hundred-acre ranch on Eureka flat, though he continued to reside in the old home on South Third street, where the family still live. Farming was his occupation until about two years before his death.
It is recorded that every public demonstration of a patriotic nature saw Mr. Painter somewhere in the lead with his battle-scarred Indian war flag. When the volunteers went to the Philippines, when they returned, on Memorial day and other similar occasions, he and his flag were in evidence, and should he be detained by any cause from participation in any such celebration, it was a sore disappointment to all. His patriotic sentiments led him to take a prominent part in the Pioneer Association of Oregon and he always made a special effort to be present at every meeting of the organization. He was also active in the Indian War Veterans, of which he was first grand commander, and he belonged for years to the A.O.U.W. In politics, he was a stanch Republican, prominent in the councils of that party and an important factor in the political affairs of eastern Washington.
On January 7, 1864, Mr. Painter was married to Miss Caroline Mitchell, the only daughter of Judge I. Mitchell , of Multnomah county, Oregon, and their children are Philip M., deceased, Joseph E., Charles S., Maude M., Harrie M., Bonnie Jean, Marguerite M., Roy R., Rex M., Caroline M., and Bruce I.
Mr. Painter died of paralysis December 4, 1900. He was a pioneer, a soldier, a western nobleman—above all he was a true friend. During all that time when the crude model nature made was being remoulded and recast as the demands of progress and civilization dictated that it must, he was known throughout all the great northwest as the personification of loyalty and honor. In the memory of his friends, and he had many, he will live forever.

History of the Pacific Northwest, Oregon and Washington, 1889
WILLIAM C. PAINTER. - William C. Painter was born in St. Genevieve county, Missouri, April 18, 1830. His parents, Philip and Jean, lived on a farm; and the early years of William's life were passed in that home. In 1850 his father started for Oregon with his family of wife and seven children, but died of cholera on the Little blue river. Two of his sons had been buried as they camped by that stream two days before; and only the mother, with her two daughters, Margaret A. and Sara J., and three sons, William C., Joseph C. and Robert M. were left to continue their sorrowful journey to the Pacific coast. Upon the family's arrival in the Willamette valley, they took up several Donation claims in Washington county; and the one taken by William was retained by him until his removal to Washington Territory in 1862.
When the Indian war of 1855 broke out, he was one of those who enlisted for that campaign as a member of Company D, First Regiment, Oregon Mounted Volunteers, continuing to follow the fortunes of his company until it was mustered out of service late in 1856. It was the opportune arrival of this command upon the scene of action that caused the Indians at the battle of Walla Walla, in December, 1855, to give up the struggle and retreat into the Palouse country. He participated with credit to himself in all the battles and skirmishes of that war east of the Cascades, prior to the disbandment of his company.
Mr. Painter was chosen by his comrades as the bearer of a flag made by young ladies at the Forest Grove academy, and still retains the colors, after having borne them through the Indian wars of 1855-56 and 1878. Mr. Painter's services in the latter war were important, and may be mentioned here. When the hostile Bannacks and Piute Indians were being pursued into Washington Territory by General O.O. Howard, a company of men enlisted in Walla Walla under W.C. Painter for active service; and their brief campaign on the Columbia river received the following mention by Captain John A. Kress, which was made a part of General Howard's official report of that war.
"Small bands of Indians, with large numbers of horses passed to north side Columbia simultaneously, at daylight this morning, at point near North Willow creek, at Coyote Station at head of Long Island, and just above Umatilla. I caught one band in the act at Long Island, as reported this morning. Have attacked and dispersed these bands at different points during the day. Had two very lively skirmishes, landing after firing form steamer, and charging Indians successfully up steep hills; no casualties known except wounding one Indian, killing five horses in the attack on one of the bands. Captain Charles Painter and the forty-two volunteers from Walla Walla deserve praise for good conduct and bravery, not excepting my Vancouver regulars and Captain Gray with officers and crew of steamer Spokane, who stood firmly at the posts under fire."
A week after the close of service on the river, he was made aid-de-camp on the staff of Governor E.P. Ferry, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and immediately took charge of fifty-two men, who crossed over to assist the people of Eastern Oregon in defending that region against the onslaught of the hostile savages, recently defeated by General Howard. He passed south of the retreating bands to Camas Prairie with his little force to intercept their retreat; but the hostiles, learning his position, avoided a collision by a circuitous route; and the Colonel returned to Walla Walla with captured horses as his only visible trophy of that campaign. These horses were sold at auction; and money enough was received by this means to pay the entire expense of his command. Although no battle was fought in this last expedition, it was considered so hazardous that ten dollars per day was offered for guides without its inducing anyone to undertake the duty.
But let us return to the more ordinary pursuits of his life, and pick up again the thread in Oregon. In 1861 and 1862 he left the farm in the Willamette valley and became a miner in the mountains east of Snake river, and in 1863 came to Wallula, and clerked for Flanders & Felton for four years. When the senior member of the firm was elected to Congress in 1867, Mr. Painter took charge of their business, and became postmaster and agent for Wells, Fargo & Co. at that place. While there, he was appointed deputy collector of Internal revenue for Eastern Washington Territory. On receiving this last appointment, he removed to Walla Walla City, and has lived in that place since. He resigned as deputy in November 1870; but the resignation was not accepted until the following May. He then made an unfortunate investment in some mill property that proved his financial Waterloo, and was forced to commence at the foot of the ladder for a business climb. He then went to work for wages, and continued this until 1876, when the wheel of fortune turned in his favor again; and he received the appointment of receiver in the United States land-office. This position was held by him until September, 1878; and he was elected auditor of Walla Walla county in November of that year, and re-elected in November, 1880.
In 1864, January 7, he was married to Carrie Mitchell, the daughter of Israel and Mary Mitchell, of Washington county, Oregon. Their children's names are as follows: Philip M. (deceased), Joseph E., Mary Maud, B. Jean, Roy R., Carrie M., Chas. F.S., Harry M., Daisy M., Rex M., Bruce I.
Of Mr. Painter it may be said truthfully, that in his active life no private or public transaction of his has left a shadow or taint of dishonorable motive or dishonest act; and those who know him best esteem him most.

WILLIAM CHARLES PAINTER.
The days of chivalry and knighthood in Europe cannot furnish more interesting or romantic tales than our own western history. Into the wild mountain fastnesses of the unexplored west went brave men whose courage was often called forth in encounters with hostile savages. The land was rich in all natural resources, in metals, in agricultural and commercial possibilitaes, and awaited the demands of man to yield up its treasures. But its mountain heights were hard to climb, its forests difficult to penetrate and the magnificent trees, the dense bushes or jagged rocks often sheltered the skulking foe, who resented the encroachment of the pale faces upon these "hunting grounds." The establishment of homes in this beautiful region therefore meant sacrifices, hardships and ofttimes death, but there were some men, however, brave enough to meet the red man an his own familiar haunts and undertake the task of reclaiming the district for purposes of civilization. The rich mineral stores of the northwest were thus added to the wealth of the nation, its magnificent forests contributed to the lumber industry and its fertile valleys added to the opportunities of the farmer and stock raiser; and today the northwest is one of the most productive sections of the entire country. That this is so is due to such men as William Charles Painter, whose name is inseparably interwoven with the history of the region. No story of fiction contains more exciting chapters than may be found in his life record. He was one of the most prominent of those who engaged in Indian warfare and for many years he was also a leading figure in the agricultural development of this sectaon of the state. Walla Walla numbered him among her most honored and valued citizens and his death was the occasion of deep and widespread regret.
William C. Painter was born in St. Genevieve, Missouri, April 18, I830, and there the earliest years of his life were passed. His paternal ancestors came from Mercer county, Pennsylvania. His mother, who bore the maiden name of Jean Moore, was a daughter of Major Robert Moore, a veteran of the War of 1812 and well known in connection with the early history of Oregon. In 185 the father with his family started for Oregon, but when the Little Blue river was reached the father and two of the sons died of cholera. The mother and the surviving children continued the journey westward with sore hearts but with undaunted courage and finally reached Washington county, Oregon, where donation land claims were secured.
There William C. Painter resided until I863 and was prominently identified with the early development of that section. At the time of the Indian war of 1855 he was one of the first to enlist, becoming a member of Company D, First

Schnebly Family
The descendents of pioneer Ellensburg newspaperman David J. Schnebly constitute a literal "Who's Who" of the Ellensburg Rodeo and Kittitas County Fair history. This respected Kittitas Valley family boasts among its ranks no less than five rodeo and fair board members and ten rodeo queens and princesses. Since the Ellensburg Rodeo's 1923 beginning, the Schneblys have served the Ellensburg Rodeo in jobs ranging from chute boss to pickup man, Arena Director, Rodeo Board members, PRCA competitors, and rodeo court royalty.
David J. Schnebly (b. 1818) was a Marylander whose ancestors had migrated to America from Zurich, Switzerland in 1750. The Maryland Schnebly's were successful businessmen, physicians, journalists, and tobacco planters, several of whom held college degrees. Upon graduation from Franklin and Marshall College (PA) in 1854, David J. Schnebly worked his way out West as a newspaperman, landing in Oregon City, Oregon in 1850.
In 1851, David Schnebly married Margaretta Painter of Linn City, Oregon. Margaretta's parents had migrated from Missouri over the Oregon Trail in 1850. Their cattle were branded with the "Bar Balloon," now the oldest registered brand in Washington State. Upon marriage, the Schneblys divided their time between cattle raising and newspaper publishing in the state of Oregon and Walla Walla, Washington Territory. They moved to the Kittitas Valley in 1871 and ran cattle on the northeastern Kittitas Valley range and the Columbia Plain. In 1883, David returned to journalism, starting the Ellensburg Localizer, a paper whose lineage extends to today's Ellensburg Daily Record. They raised a family of four children---Philip, Mary, Charles, and Jean.
The four children of David and Margaretta Schnebly, upon marriage, began family lines that run deep through Ellensburg Rodeo history. Eldest son Philip H. married Eliza P. Cooke (ERHOF '99); daughter Mary married Frederick F. Adams; Charles Schnebly married Louise Koepke; and youngest daughter Jean C. Schnebly married Judge John B. Davidson.
Throughout the entire history of the Ellensburg Rodeo, the descendents of the four children of David and Margaretta Schnebly have shouldered the work of rodeo and fair volunteers. The first Schnebly family Rodeo Board member was Philip Adams (1924-29), who also served as Arena Director (1925-29). Fred Adams was a Rodeo Board member (1940) and Rufus Schnebly served as Rodeo Board member (1945-50) and President (1947-49). Frank Schnebly served on both the Rodeo Board (1946-50) and Fair Board (1938-58) and as Fair President (1939-58). Gene Barnhart was a Fair Board member (1952-90) and President (1971). Indeed, one of the most important facets of the Schnebly legacy is the family's dedication to the alliance and friendship of both Fair and Rodeo Board members.
Meanwhile, Hank Schnebly was the Ellensburg Rodeo's first chute boss (1923-37) and later a pickup man for Ernie McEwen. Robert Schnebly and his twin brother Rufus were both charter members of the Ellensburg Rodeo Posse.
The Schnebly family's contributions have not been limited to volunteer work. Schnebly family cowboys have competed in both roughstock and timed events. Schnebly cowboys include bronc rider Fred Adams and five PRCA ropers---Ken Barnhart, Kevin Barnhart, JR Barnhart, and team-ropers Chuck and John Schnebly.
Finally, there are the Schnebly family Rodeo Royalty, direct descendents of all four children of David and Margaretta Schnebly. Royal Court members were Princesses Lorraine Schnebly (1927), Edna May Schnebly Sadler (1939), Peggy Kern Brown (1966), and Bobbi Jo Burke Broderius (1986) and Queens Billy Lou Schnebly Parker (1939), Helen McGranahan Baker (1945), Sally Jo Schnebly Eckert (1946), Mary Adams Larkin (1957), Sandy Kern Bryan (1964), and Patti Burke (1981).
Thus, the Schnebly family has left a great legacy to the Ellensburg Rodeo---a legacy that their descendents carry on this day.

D. J. SCHNEBLY."'
_DEATH OF D. J. SCHNEBLY
_"David J. Schnebly, so well known throughout the valley as 'Grandfather Schnebly', passed away peacefully on Saturday last (January 5, 1901). He was the editor of this paper up to 1898, completing a term of fifty years in active journalism.
"Mr. Schneblv was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, February 6, 1818. \Vas a graduate of Marshall College, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. After lear- _ing college, he bought the 'Mercersburg Journal,' which he edited for about fo:.r 3;ears. He moved to Peoria, Illinois, where he was engaged in editorial _work on various papers of that city. In the Spnng of 1850 he crossed the plains to Oregon and located at Oregon City, where on August 12, 1850, he took charge of the 'Spectator,' then owned by Maj. Robert Moore, purchasing it the following year and publishing it until 1855. In 1850 Mr. Schneblv was publishing the only newspaper in the state of Oregon. This pioneer paper had been founded by the missionaries when Oregon was almost a wilderness, and the red man formed the major part of her population.
"Mr. Schnebly was married at Linn City, Oregon, November 20, 1851, to Margaretta A. Painter, daughter of the late Hon. Philip Painter, of St. Gene- x'ieve, Missouri. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. George Atkinson, at the residence of Miss Painter's grandfather., Maj. Robert Moore. 1r. and Mrs. Schneblv moved to \Valla \Valla in 1861. During his residence in that city he was connected at different times with the 'Union,' 'Statesman,' and other papers.
"In 1871 he came to Kittitas Valley where he purchased the 'Localizer.' In 1898 he sold the paper to F. D. Schnebty, the present editor. Notwithstanding

HISTORY OF YAKIMA VALLEY 591
EARLY ELLENSBURG
FIRST NEWSPAPERS.
The very first newspaper in Ellensburg was the "Kitt!tas \Vau \Â¥au,' I published by an early pioneer, Harry Bryant. It was a typewmtten sheet, and it cost nothing, so could scarcely be called a regular newspaper, though it contained all the news and advertisements of the town. papers at an issue.
The first real newspapers were owned by Mr. D. J. Schnebly and Mr. lv. A. Chadd. Mr. Schnebly owned "The Localizer" and Mr. Chadd "The Stand They turned out only forty or fifty _ard." Each man said his paper was the first. Mr. J. R..Wallace wrote for both papers. He would writen an item for one paper against the other, then would go to the other and write something against the one he had written just before. It was a long time before Mr Schnebly or Mr. Chadd knew this.
With this view of the beginmngs of the Kittitas as seen with the eyes of the children we shall be prepared to close this chapter, taking up the continuation of the story with the establishment of the new county in 1883. That date may very smtably be taken as the dividing line between the pioneer era and the later history.

History of the Pacific Northwest, Oregon and Washington, 1889
DAVID J. SCHNEBLY. - Among all the editors whose lives are sketched in this volume, Mr. Schnebly yields to none the priority, since in 1850 he was conducting the only newspaper then in Oregon.
He was born near Hagerstown, Maryland, in 1818, and from that state drew the physical completeness and mental energy for which her people have been distinguished. As a youth of seventeen he removed with his parents to Illinois, but there was greatly afflicted by the loss of his father by death. In 1840 he returned to his native state in order to pursue a course of literary study, and spent some years thereafter at Marshall College.
In 1850 he felt the impulse to give his life to the establishment of a new state on the Pacific coast, and arriving in Oregon found scope for his native abilities and for his literary acquirements as editor of the Spectator. That was the first paper established on the Pacific coast, and the only one published in Oregon in 1850. In the year following Mr. Schnebly, having gained the confidence of the people, and being well assured by all of his fitness for the position of publisher and censor of the ideas and opinions of the people of the state, purchased the establishment, and was editor and proprietor until 1854. reference to the old files of that journal show the success that attended his efforts. He sold out, however, in the latter year to W.L. Adams, M.D., now at Hood River, who changed the name to the Argus. In the meantime Mr. Schnebly had been married to Miss Margaret Painter, of Linn City. Seven children have been born to them, of whom, Phillip H., Charles P. and C. Jean are living. The eldest daughter, Mary V., the wife of Mr. F.F. Adams, died in 1887 at San Diego, California.
After leaving the Spectator, Mr. Schnebly assumed the arduous labors of rancher, taking a Donation claim of six hundred and forty acres, which, however, he disposed of in 1860 and gathered a band of cattle to begin in the stock business in the Walla Walla valley. He drove thither a large herd; but the winter following was that terribly severe season which old pioneers still remember with a shiver, and he suffered the loss of all except two horses. By this disaster he was financially stranded, but in a certain hopeless way, feeling that there was more use in action of some kind than passive acquiescence, he bought on credit six yoke of oxen and a wagon, and began freighting, employing as one of his teamsters, Ed . Ross, who subsequently became the talented editor of the Walla Walla Union. Success followed this endeavor; and in 1865 he went up north to the Spokane river, and built a toll bridge nine miles above the Falls. Meeting with a good sale of this property, he returned to Walla Walla, and in 1870 erected the flouring mill which is now owned by Dement Bros. By the failure of fortune in other respects, this enterprise proved a disaster; and he was again forced to the foot of the financial ladder.
With good courage and faith in a new country, he came in 1872 to the Kittitass valley and engaged for several years in farming. In 1883 the Kittitass Localizer was established at Ellensburgh, Washington Territory, with himself as editor and J.M. Adams as proprietor, but within eleven weeks he became sole proprietor and publisher, and has remained such to the present time. In this field Mr. Schnebly finds scope for his still unwasted vigor, and for his virile ideas. Although the senior in point of reckoning as pioneer, and also in years, of all the editors on the coast, he is still hale and active at seventy-one. Blest with vigorous health, and retaining to a marked degree his physical powers, he belies his years by the freshness of his countenance, and the activity of his movements. The facility of his pen and the strength of his views are well known to the public; and his paper is also widely read and much sought after for its well-filled local columns.

Schnebly, Philip Henry
Kittitas County, Washington Obituaries
The Kittitas Valley lost another of its well known pioneers Sunday [October 17, 1926] when Philip Henry Schnebly passed away after an illness that extended over a period of more than three years. Death came at 7 o'clock Sunday, morning but was not unexpected, as Mr. Schnebly had suffered an acute sinking spell Friday.
Coming here from Oregon, his birthplace, in 1872, Mr. Schnebly became one of the most important growers of beef cattle in the state, both stock and acreage mounting into the thousands. For a number of years, however, his livestock interests have been handled by his six sons. He retired in 1909.
The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the family residence at Eighth and A streets. The Rev. E. Leslie Rolls, rector of Grace Parish, will officiate, and the pall bearers will be friends of the deceased of long standing. They include: John J. Sharp, John N. Faust, Ben Shelton, D. W. S. Ramsay, J. C. Sterling, and C. C. Churchill.
The lives of Mr. Schnebly and his family have been closely associated with the development of the Northwest. Mr. Schnebly was born October 8, 1852, near Oregon City, Ore. He was a son of David J. and Margaret (Painter) Schnebly, who were married in Oregon after crossing the plains by ox team. David J. Schnebly purchased from the founder and published the Oregon Spectator, the first newspaper in the Northwest, and years later when he came to Ellensburg he published the Ellensburg Localizer, which has been succeeded by the Evening Record.
In 1861 the elder Mr. Schnebly moved his family to Walla Walla, where he farmed, and also operated a toll bridge across the Spokane River. He died in Ellensburg in 1901 at the age of 84 years.
Philip H. Schnebly came to Ellensburg in 1872 after having been a student at the Forest Grove Seminary, Oregon, and at Whitman College. He immediately became interested in the livestock industry, taking up government land, and with the other pioneers of that day drove cattle across the Cascades to Seattle to market. As the valley developed he became known as one of the foremost stockmen in the state, with more than 2,000 head of cattle, 2000 acres of Meadow land and many thousands of acres of range land.
On November 12, 1877, Mr. Schnebly was married to Miss Eliza F. Cooke, who also is a pioneer, having been born at Independence, Ore., a daughter of Charles P. and Susan Cooke. She is a descendant of a prominent Colonial family that was represented in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
Six sons and four daughters survive Mr. Schnebly in addition to his wife; Fred C. Schnebly, Miss Lillian Schnebly, J. J. Schnebly, P. D. Schnebly, Mrs. John Paul, Frank Schnebly, Mrs. Chester C. McGranahan, Rufus and Robert Schnebly, all of Ellensburg, and Mrs. John Howell of Yakima; a brother, Charles P. Schnebly, and a sister, Mrs. John B. Davidson, also reside in Ellensburg. There are 19 grandchildren.

HISTORY OF YAKIMA VALLEY
PHILIP HENRY SCHNEBLY.
No history of Ellensburg would be complete without extended reference of Philip Henry Schnebly, who has resided in Kittitas county for more th.an forty-six years and has always made his home in the northwest. He has contmbuted much toward the upbuilding of this great.western, empire .and has for many years figured as one of the foremost representatives of its ranching and stock raising .interests. He was born near Oregon City, Oregon, October 8, 1852, a son of David J. and Marg.aret (Painter) Schnebly, who we.re natives of Maryland a.nd of Missouri respectively. The father crossed the plains in 1850. and took up his abode at Oregon City. The moth.er was a da.u.ghter .of Joseph Painter, who st.arted on .the long trip to the far west m 1850 but died whale en route, and two of his sons died of cholera on the trip. The mother of Mr. Schnebly of this review, together with the others of the family, continued the journey and they, too, took up their abode in Oregon, settling at Linn City, not far from Oregon City. It was in that state that the parents of Philip Henry Schnebly were married. The father was at one time owner and publisher of the Oregon Spectator, the first newspaper established in the northwest which he purchaser from the founder. In 1861 he removed with his family to Walla Walla, Washington, and there he took up the occupation of farm.ing but always continued to write for the papers. Later he conducted a toll bridge across the Spokane river and in 1871 he removed to Ellensburg, where he took up government land and turned his attention to the live stock business on a small scale. Later., however, he once more became an active factor in journalistic circles, owning the Localizer, which was the first newspaper published at Ellensburg. This he conducted until three years prior to his death, which occurred on the 5th of January, 1901, when he had reached the age of eighty-four years.
In his youthful days Philip Henry Schnebly attended school with Professor D. Lyman in the Forest Grove Seminary. Becoming a resident of Ellensburg 1872, he, too, took up the live stock business in a small way and he had to drive his cattle over the Cascades to Seattle to make sales. He entered land from the government.and in the course of years, as the country became re.ore thickly settled, his business interests developed and he became one of the prominent stockmen of the state. He and his sons today have over two thousand head of cattle and over two thousand acres of meadow land, together with more. tha.n forty thousand acres of range land. This is now owned by Mr. Schnebly and his six sons. For the past ten years, however, Mr. Schnebly has lived in Ellensburg, where he is most comfortably situated. As the years have passed he has built up a fine herd of cattle and is today recognized as one of the most prominent stockmen of the state. He has developed his herds along progressive lines, has exercised the utmost care over his stock and has done much to improve the grade of stock raised in this section of the state. His opinions concerning all problems of stock raising are largely accepted as authority, for it is well known that his long experience in this line enables him to speak with accuracy and sound judgment on all questions relating to the business.

In his political views Mr. Glafke is a stalwart republican and he has served for many years as a member of the board of education of Walla Walla but does not seek office along strictly political lines. He stands for everything that tends to advance the public welfare, however, and his aid and cooperation can always be counted upon to further measures and movements for the general good. NOTES:
"Prudence was born in 1909 in Salem. Her paternal forebears, the Painters,
were overland pioneers of 1850 from Missouri. Her great grandfather, Philip
Painter, having died on the trail, left his widow, Jane Moore Painter, and son
William to take up separate land claims which they settled in 1852 in
Washington County. Prudence's grandparents were Robert M. and Ella (Zeiber)
Painter. Her father, Philip Zeiber Painter (1863-1924), a nephew of Asahel
Bush, moved with his parents to Salem at a young age and became a farmer. He
married Clema Jane White (1878-1970), daughter of Waldo Hills pioneers James
F. and Elizabeth K. (Heater) White. Philip and Clema had twelve children, nine
of whom lived to maturity and of whom Prudence was the youngest daughter.
Demure, courteous, and kind, she was married first to Eugene R. Flesher of
Salem. Her only child, Prudence Jean, died in infancy in 1931. She was later
married to Frank Johnston, a professional golfer. The Johnstons lived in
California until Johnston's retirement in the 1970s, at which time they
relocated to Salem to be nearer Prudence's older sister, Phyllis, and other
family members. Prudence Painter Johnston was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal
Church. Following her death in January, 2005, she was buried in the Painter
family plot in Salem Pioneer Cemetery." Information from Betty Kurtz and
