Generation No. 1

1. JOSEPH C1 MAYBEE was born 06 Dec 1796 in Otsego, Otsego, New York, and died 13 Apr 1864 in Parish, Oswego, New York. He married (1) SARAH HOUSE Abt. 1820 in Parish, Oswego, New York. She was born 09 Jul 1798, and died 04 Dec 1834 in Oswego, New York. He married (2) MARIAH HARRINGTON Abt. 1835. She was born 10 Nov 1816 in New York, and died 17 Aug 1890 in Parish, Oswego, New York.

Notes for JOSEPH C MAYBEE:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoswego/towns/parish/1895landmarks.html

The first town meeting was held in the "Parishville school house," near the residence of Simeon Adams, on the first Tuesday in May, 1828, and the following officers were chosen:

constables; Joseph Maybee

Several other settlers arrived prior to the war of 1812, mainly from the counties of Herkimer and Otsego. Among them was the Hatch family, of whom Jarvis Hatch, born in 1806, subsequently resided in Mexico. The exact date of the coming of many others cannot be determined. The war and the celebrated "cold season" of 1816, materially checked immigration and caused much suffering, while the miasma arising from the marshes added to the general discomfort. Those who had arrived, however, braved the privations of frontier life with fortitude. Among the settlers during this period and down to the year 1825 were Jacob J. Miller, Luman Brockway, Benjamin Whitney, Joseph Maybee, William Avery, J. W. Scriber, Simeon Adams, John Miller, Joseph Edick, Abram Hoose, Erastus Fyler, Milo M. and Asahel Coan, James David, C. Edick, Daniel Edick, J. H. Miller, G. Rider, and J. Sampson

Will of Joseph Maybee, of the Town of Parish, Oswego County, dated 6/2/1862, states that Joseph was 66 years old at the time the will was written, mentions wife Mariah , daughters Nancy and Alice (both unmarried) daughter Calarissa, wife of Harley Surgent, daughter Sally, wife of Horace Hays, son Joseph and son Charles. An interesting provision of this will is that the inheritence of son Charles was contingent upon his returning to Parish within ten years of Joseph's death. A parenthetical expression notes that Charles was "supposed to be in California now"

From schedule at end of this will his daughter was named Clarissa Orr even though in the body she and her husband Hurley Sergeant were left two pieces of land in the town of Parish. Sarah and husband Horace Hayes were left two pieces of land in the town of Parish, NY. From schedule at end of his will it shows her living in Grand Rapids, MI

Notes for HARRIET JOSEPHINE SMITH:

The death certificate for Harriet Josephine (Smith) Maybee (1874-1939) indicates that her body was transported from North Bend, Coos Co., OR to Weston (the Maybee's family home) for burial. "Judge" Charles Maybee died in Marion Co., OR on 03 May 1945 and I presume he's buried with his wife in Weston.

Thanks,

Karen Davis

Notes for ALTA MAYBEE:

Hi - its been a while since we were in contact and I thought you might want to post a litt tidbit about Alta Maybee.

First off, she's buried in Masonic Cemetery, Grants Pass, Josephine Co., OR. Her tombstone reads her death occurred 25 Apr 1902.

I have a letter written May 8, 1902 by her mother Hattie that the baby lived only 4 days. Her birth was brought on by Hattie having taken a bad fall. Her husband's mother "Mother Maybee" was there to help out.

Can't thank you enough for posting info on families of the area - its been very helpful.

PIONEER REUNION QUEEN -- Mrs William S Price (Alice Maybee)

has been selected as queen of the Umatilla County Pioneer association reunion May 25 and 26. She has lived in the county for 73 years. (Eagle-Times photo, Davison engraving)

Alice Maybee Price is Weston Pioneer Queen

WESTON-- Mrs William S. Price has been selected as queen of the Umatilla County Pioneer association reunion, May 25 and 26.

"Queen Alice" was born near Emporia, Kan., October 4, 1874, the eldest daughter of the late Charles and Mary Maybee. In May, 1877, the family started west by covered wagon to "the land where the big red apples grow."

They arrived in the Willamette valley in September and later Mrs. Maybee said that most of the way she had carried the baby, Janet, and 'dragged' Alice, then almost three.

Came in '78

In 1878 the family came to Weston and in 1870 Maybee homesteded near Pendleton. In 1895 they moved back to Weston, which since has bee Mrs. Price's home. her residence in the county has been for 73 continous years.

October 10, 1897 she and William Price were married in the United Brethren Church, with the lat Rev. Homer Gallaher officiating. Attendants were Miss Adda Shaw and Marvin Price. It was intended to be a quiet wedding with only the wedding party present but the news had leaked out the church was filled and some interestd neighbors and friends looked in the windows. Mrs. Price believe this was the first public wedding in Weston.

The Prices were parents of a son and daughter, the former of whom died in infancy. The daughter, Mrs Lisle (Ruby) Webb of Granger, Wash., is the mother of Mrs F.M. Burns of Seattle.

Regular Attendant

"Queen Alice" has attended all Pioneer Reunions, and for several years was a member of the Weston Ladies' band, which always contributed much to the programs. When the Sons and Daughters of Pioneers were organized she was elected secretary and held that office until the group disbanded.

Mr. and Mrs. Price observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1947.

Mrs. Price is a member of the Crescent Chapter No 47 O.E.S., and assisted that organization in observance of its 50th anniversary in 1946. The chapter sponsored her as queen. She also is a member of the Saturday Afternoon club, a federated club.

George Maybee Martin

(June 18, 1906 – February 21, 1994) Spokane, Washington

Martin actively supported organized philately both nationally and in his Pacific Northwest. He served the many stamp clubs that make up the Northwest Federation of Stamp Clubs, which include clubs in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and in Western Canada. He was active in its annual Pacific International Philatelic Exhibition (PIPEX).

For his long service to the area, Martin was named NFSC Distinguished Philatelist in 1962. He was elected to the Washington State Philatelic Hall of Fame in 1966. In June 1986 the Yakima Valley Stamp Club honored him by calling its exhibition MARTINPEX, with a special post office cancel that described him as author, historian, philatelist and philanthropist.

Martin was a specialist collector of U.S. postal cards and edited the first U. S. Postal Card Catalog (1955) for the United Postal Stationery Society. He worked on subsequent editions for the next decade. Martin served the APS in many posts, including the Expert Committee, Recruiting Committee and the Speakers Bureau. He also was an accredited judge, and participated on many juries. He served as APS Counsel (later Senior Counsel) from 1965 until his death.

He was a founding member of American Philatelic Research Library and served as trustee for 14 years, until 1983. He also was a founding member of the APS Writers Unit 30 and served as its president from 1969 to 1973. In 1973, in recognition of his work with young collectors, the Junior Division of the Writers Unit presented him with a special Silver Medal bearing the Writers Unit logo. Martin wore this with pride at many philatelic events. He received the Luff Award in 1974 for Outstanding Service to the Society.

Notes for LEIF NESS:

Esther E. Ness, brother-in -law to our President, George Maybee Martin and grandfather to Elizabeth Sevy, sent this, " Leif Ness was born October 4, 1901, in Wapaton, North Dakota and almost at once his childhood adventures started. At age one, the family moved to Petersburg, Territory of Alaska. After his Mother's death in 1906, they returned to the States. Leif was taken into the home of Oscar Rindal at Miller Bay for a year. He had his first ice cream cone in Poulsbo, Washington, a tiny village in those days.

At his father's remarriage, he moved to Seattle where he graduated from the 8th grade. His father, Per, bought a farm at Edgecomb, Washington where Leif spent his high school years, graduating from Arlington High School.

The next ten years were an adventurous kaleidoscope. He was a high rigger in the virgin forests of Washington; worked in the apple orchards in Eastern Washington; went fishing on our coastal waters; had his ship go to the bottom during a storm in Grays Harbor; raised blue foxes for a year on an island in Alaska and bought and operated a service station in Port Orchard.

At this time Leif met and married Esther Eileen Martin. They had hardly settled in their first home when they sold the station.

In 1932 Leif and Bjarne, his brother, bought the old feed store in Poulsbo and spent the next 30 years -- during the great depression -- building it up to a big business and raising a family of two daughters, Janet Eileen and Sonya Karen.

Leif was active in the growth of the little town, serving seven years on the City Council, many years on the Port Commission, taught first aid classes all during World War II, and 30 years with his real love -- the Poulsbo Volunteer Fire Department.

When he retired, he was assistant Fire Chief. In between, he built about 10 homes in Poulsbo; spent several seasons fishing in Alaskan waters; built a beautiful fishing boat, The High C. When they closed the feed store and retired in 1960, we bought a motor home and started spending the next 20 winters in travel. We covered over 150,000 miles, from the Arctic Circle to Guatemala and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Leif was a fantastic traveling companion, and always ready to explore a strange road or to stop and smell the flowers. We also flew to distant places: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii.

At age 85 we found the time had come to give the motor home #2 to the kids and turn our attention to enjoying our grandchildren. Leif enjoyed a close companionship with many of you. I'm sure you all join us in wishing him well in this, his last great adventure.

Internment will be with four generations of Esther's family in Weston, Oregon, at the foot of the lovely Blue Mountains
