Generation No. 1

1. JAMES1 MANSFIELD was born Abt. 1797 in Kentucky, and died Bef. 1870 in Oregon. He married ELIZABETH CHAMPION 01 Jul 1819 in Washington county, Kentucky. She was born 17 Nov 1797 in Kentucky, and died 20 May 1884 in Umatilla county, Oregon.

Notes for JAMES MANSFIELD:

Name: James Mansfield Sex: M Birth: 1796 in Lincoln county, Kentucky 1 Death: 26 NOV 1862 in Lane county, Oregon 1 Burial: Linn county, Oregon, Muddy Creek cemetery 1 Note: 1 1

James is found in the 1850 Illinois census, Knox county, Henderson township. He is a farmer, age 53 with $3000 in real estate.

James Mansfield, his sons Isaac, John C., Samuel and Philologus & Amanda (Mansfield) Ely and Thomas & Sarah Keys arrived together in eastern Oregon late Aug. 1853 and arrived to north Lane/ south Linn county Oregon the 8th, 9th and 10th of September. All of the above mentioned took out Oregon Donation Land Claims.

The other 4 Mansfield sons that came to Oregon with James Mansfield but did not have DLC's were twins Benjamin and DH, William and George. One son Thomas stayed in Knox county and has a write up in History of Knox co.

Umatilla, Oregon register 1853 roster below?

Aug. 18, 1853 Mansfield J w 5 sons = James and Elizabeth (Champion) Mansfield

.......Key, C, wife, 1 son - mostly likely a son of Thomas & Sarah

Aug. 19, 1853 Ely, P.L., w, 1 son = Philologus Ely wife Amanda Mansfield, infant son Charles

Aug. 20, 1853 T. Keighs, wife, 1 son 1 daughter = likely to be Thomas Keys & Sarah Fountain - the daughter is likely the one that later is living with Isaac & Sarah Mansfield

....Mansfield, J., wife, 1 son = John C. Mansfield & Sarah Frakes.

By the early to mid 1870s, land was opening up in Umatilla county, and the Christian Church was expanding to Athena OR. Most of these people moved on to Echo, Weston or Athena by the mid 1870s. James Mansfield died in 1864 and left a piece of land to William so William and his wife stayed behind. William died I believe in the early 1870s.

Council Bluffs, April 29, 1853. The Knoxville Journal, Galesburg,

Illinois, May 31, 1853, p.2:

We clip the following extracts from a letter written to the Editors of

the Oquawka Spectator, by Thomas H. Hutchinson.

Council Bluffs, April 29.

We reached this place on the 18th instant. We had a fine trip ˆ roads

good ˆ grain on the first part of the road, from 21 P to 25 cents per

bushel, on the latter part (patt?) 50cts. (at which price we laid in our

supply,) but now it is selling from $1.50 to $2.00 per bushel.

Our train now consists of 20 wagons. Messrs. Whitney & Adams, of Michigan,

and John Ferris, of Galesburg, joined our train. The number of persons is

62. ˆ30 men, and 32 women and children. When I was at Oquawka, I omitted to

mention the names of Samuel North, Calvin Wallace, George M. West, Jacob

Codington, and Joseph Hawkins, also T. G. Richmond (not Hickmond.)

Major Frakes & co., Mansfield & co., of Knox county, and William McCoy, of

Warren county, have all arrived in this place. The emigration is not as

large this year as common. The number of wagons variously estimated ˆ from

2 to five thousand, but that is much above the number, that have come under

my observation.

Provisions and goods are selling at reasonable prices. Flour $3.00 per

hundred, sugar 7 P cents per pound, bacon 10, coffee 10 to 12.

Notes for AMANDA MANSFIELD:

Obituary of Amanda Mansfield Ely, from Athena Press, Athena, Umatilla County, Oregon, 3 February 1905

MOTHER IN HEAVEN.

BY HER CHILDREN.

Our dear mother, Mrs. Amanda Ely, departed from us in Seattle, Wash., January 27, 1905, at the age of 80 years, eight months and 16 days.

She was a devoted mother-our best earthly friend-and a faithful Christian; a member of the Christian church at Athena, Oregon, her home for many years, and where we have buried her body by the side of the graves of our dear father, P. Ely, and our sweet spirited sister, Lizzie Ely. The grave of our dear brother, J. F. Ely, is at San Bernardino, California.

The loving and faithful soul, or spirit, our real mother, has gone into the great beyond where all are going, and from whence none has ever returned. She has left four children and three brothers. Two sons, C. M. and G. W. Ely, and one daughter, M. A. Bamford, are residents of Seattle, Wash., and one daughter, Mrs. R. L. Price, resides near Farmington, Wash. Two brothers, F. M. and B. F. Mansfield, reside at Athena, Ore., and one brother, T. J. Mansfield, resides in Illinois.

Mother has been an invalid for over ten years. A very patient sufferer; never known once to complain or find fault.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their (her) eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying; neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things have passed away." (Rev. 21:4.) "Rejoice ever-more." (1st Thess. 5:16.)

No word that we can say or write, or even our thoughts, can express the full meaning of the word mother. Therefore we will only add what our dear sister said of "Heaven;" and let us all think of "Mother in Heaven!"
