Generation No. 1
1. BOLIVAR BRADLEY1 BISHOP was born 11 Mar 1826 in Winsted, Litchfield, Connecticut, and died 22 Mar 1897 in Salem, OR. He married LUNA PALMER 28 Mar 1852 in Lower Cascades, Skamania County, daughter of NORMAN SR PALMER. She was born 25 Apr 1829 in Danville, Vermilion, Illinois, and died 19 Jan 1908 in Prosser, Benton, Washington.
Notes for BOLIVAR BRADLEY BISHOP:
An Illustrated History Of The State Of Oregon :, The Lewis Publishing Company, 1893, Pg 1258
BOLIVER B. BISHOP, a highly respected citizen of Pendleton, Umatilla county, Oregon, and a man who is ranked with the Forty-niners of this coast, was born in Winsted, Litchfield county Connecticut, March 11,1 826. He was the sixth of the ten children born to Harry and Sophia (Granger) Bishop, both natives of Connecticut.
The subject of our sketch was educated in his native town, attending school about three months each year until he was sixteen. Then he went to New Jersey and taught school two winter terms, spending his vacation at home. It was about this time that the California gold fever spread over the country, and as it reached the Atlantic coast young Bishop was among its first victims. Taking passage on the bark Canton from New York, he set sail for the new El Dorado of the West, making the voyage via Cape Horn, and six months later, in the fall of 1849, sailed through the Golden Gate into harbor at San Francisco.
Mr. Bishop spent one year in the gold mines of California, and in February, 1851, came to Oregon, stopping first at the cascades on the Columbia river. There he contracted with Captain Vanbergin to chop 200 cords of wood, at $4 per cord, and when his work was completed received $800. Then, in company with P.F. Bradford, he built a flatboat and freighted from the Cascades to The Dalles. With the money he made in boating, he commenced buying cattle and horses from the immigrants and in the spring sold his stock. In 1852, in company with D. F. and P. F. Bradford, he engaged in salmon fishing at Cascades on the Columbia, catching and barreling 500 barrels of fish, which they sold at a nice profit. During this time they continued their flatboating successfully, building a steamboat and carrying both freight and passengers. In 1854 he, in company with the Bradfords, built the steamer Mary, to run between Cascades and the Dalles, and established thoroughly a line of steamers to run between Portland and the Dalles, they doing all the freighting for the Government from Vancouver to the Dalles. They had the first railroad that was ever built in Oregon, about one and a half miles in length, operated by mule power, and across this road all the goods were hauled between where the steamers connected, at what was called the Middle landing, and the Upper Cascades on the Washington Territory side.
In 1856 he sold his interest in the steamboat, store and freight lines, and in connection with his brother-in-law, C.J. Palmer, opened a store at The Dalles. Next spring he sold out and removed to Tygh valley, and entered extensively into farming and stock-raising. The Indians troubled him so that he had to remove to The Dalles; in 1860 he engaged in freighting from Dalles to Lewiston. We next hear of him in Boise City, where he was the first Postmaster appointed by Abe Lincoln. From there he took a position as clerk for the Oregon Steam Navigation Company, a position he held for five years. We next hear of him in Pendleton, Oregon, where he now resides.
In 1878 he was elected by the people of Pendleton to the office of Justice of the Peace, which position he has held continuously ever since, with the exception of two years. His present term of office will expire in July, 1894. May 12, 1891, he was admitted to practice law in the Supreme Court of the State of Oregon.
Mr. Bishop was married in 1852, to Miss Luna Palmer, a native of Illinois, who came to Oregon with her parents in 1851. They have five children, namely: Edward R., cashier of the National Bank of Heppner; Sophia, wife of John Bean, residing in Pendleton; George, engaged in the warehouse business at Heppner; Emma, wife of Thorp Roberts; and Miss Belle, the youngest daughter, who is with her parents. Politically, Mr. Bishop is an Independent, casting his vote for the man rather than the party. During the war of the Rebellion he was strongly in favor of the Union. When the Indian wars raged here in the West he was among the brave volunteers who went forth to stop the hostilities of the red men and protect the settlers from depredation. In 1855-’56 he was under Phil. Sheridan at the Cascade massacre, who was at that time a Lieutenant.

Notes for LUNA PALMER:
http://www.enthuz.com/friends/family/skamania/palmer/index.html
Norman Palmer came to the Cascades of the Columbia by the overland route better known as the Oregon Trail. He and five of his children had departed Illinois in two ox drawn wagons in March of 1851. They had left Danville, Illinois as part of a company of hardy pioneers and after six months of arduous travel halted their progress at the lower landing. The Palmers at the Cascades in 1851 consisted of Norman D. Palmer Sr., two daughters, Luna and Helen and three sons, Cornelius, Gurdon, and Norman, Jr. Another daughter, Emily, will arrive in 1853. This Palmer family is not closely related to the more famous Joel Palmer nor with any other Palmers who came earlier or later to Oregon or Washington.
Six months after arriving at the Cascades the two daughters who accompanied Norman married two prominent local men. In a double ceremony performed by the above mentioned Francis A. Chenowith on March 28, 1852, Luna M. Palmer married Bolivar Bishop and Helen Palmer married Putnam Bradford who was also mentioned in the census. At this point our story gains in scope because Bishop and Bradford were business partners in several lucrative endeavors in the area. Bolivar Bishop had come to the Cascades just after the 1850 census and after working in the gold mines in California; he was originally from Connecticut. The Bradford brothers along with a few fellow Massachusetts natives had bought a sailboat and sailed themselves around the horn to San Francisco and then to Oregon.

Notes for HARRY WHITNEY FISK:
In 1894 Harry left his boyhood home in Adrian, Lenawee Co., Mich. to seek his fortune in Washington Territory. He found employment at the Kelso Bros. Ranch in the Yakima Valley. The Kelso Brothers' ranch appears on the 1888 tax list for Yakima County, Washington for which their tax liability was $1,874. According to the list the Kelso Bros. were based in Wallula which is several miles downstream on the Columbia River from its junction with the Yakima River. Harry later went into partnership with William L. Dimmick. Together they leased 2,000 acres of farm land on the Horseheaven Hills south and east of Prosser, Washington, which they put into dry-land wheat. Two of Harry's sisters soon came out from Michigan to share in his successes. Harry's sister, Gertrude Fisk, married Harry's partner W. L. "Bill" Dimmick.
In the 1910 Benton Co., Washington census Emily, Ernest, Grace, Harry, Luna, and Roy are living in house 248. Their surname is spelled Fiske. House number 248 is presumably in the immediate vicinity of house 249 in which live the Thorpe Roberts family. Thorpe married Luna's mother, Emma (Bishop) Burk.
In an effort to discover the reason his son's middle name is Welch: Rollin is nearby in Lenawee Co., Michigan. MR. WELCH - d 25 Nov 1868, shot accidently at turkey shoot in Rollin. Son in law, MR JAMES SPEAR

1920-2005
Former McMinnville resident Herschel Lewis Yates died of cancer in his home in
Meridian, Idaho, on Wednesday, June 1, 2005. He was 85.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by
the Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise.
Born April 10, 1920, in Reed Point, Mont., he was the son of E. Jack and Josephine
Yates. He grew up mainly in Sunnyside, Wash.
In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He chauffeured officers around England and
North Africa. Upon discharge in 1945, he returned to Sunnyside and married Anna Rose Fisk.
He worked as a builder and welder in various locations for 20 years before returning
to run his parents' farm in 1967. In conjunction with that, he opened his own shop,
Herschel's Welding and Repair, on the family spread.
Mr. Yates had an inventor's mind and the skills of a master craftsman, his family
said. Whenever a problem presented itself to anyone, he was always there to help, it
said.
In 1992, the couple sold the farm and shop in order to move to McMinnville, wanting
to be closer to daughter Victoria Jepson. She has since moved to the Boise suburb of
Meridian, and Mr. Yates spent the last three years of his life in that area, where
he continued to weld, build and invent.
In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by five grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Yates, and sister,
Lorraine Anthony.
