John Luhrs
A man of marked activity and pronounced ability, which has been manifested throughout a long and successful career, the man whose name heads this article is now one of the prominent and leading citizens of our county and it is with pleasure that we accord to him a place in this record of its history. Like so many of America's most thrifty citizens, he was born in Germany, Hanover province, on April 4, 1836. There he resides on a farm with his father until 1851, when they came to the United States, where he engaged as clerk in a grocery store in New York, continuing therein for five years. His father, Herman A. Luhrs, always followed farming and lived to a good ripe age, passing away in 1893, in the month of May.
Our subject was much impressed with the beauty of the Atlantic voyage, having passed an especially fine trip, and after his five-year stay in New York came to San Francisco. It was in 1856 when he landed in the Golden state, and after a few months on the seaboard he turned his attention to mining in the interior, continuing at it for three years. After this he bought some mules and operated a pack train for twelve years in various portions of the west, finally coming to Umatilla county in 1863. It is worthy to relate that the place where the thriving city of Pendleton is now was but a prairie at that time. After considerable time spent in traversing the country and viewing many places, he at last selected his present home place, and purchased it in 1872. His holdings of realty aggregate sixteen hundred acres, three hundred of which is planted to wheat and barley, the remainder being utilized for grazing land. Mr. Luhrs is handling a great deal of stock, of sheep, two thousand, five hundred, and of horses and cattle and hogs, large bands.
On August 1, 1872, he was married to Miss Julia I. Pomery, daughter of Walter Pomery, a resident of this county. To this union were born the following children: Lillie A. born July 17, 1873; John W., born December 11, 1874; Glenn M., born May 18, 1886. Lillie was married to L. A. Spicer, a sheep man and farmer of this county; John W. married Miss Lizzie Ready, daughter of Joe Ready, in October, 1900, and is now living in Union county. During the Indian trouble Mr. Luhrs was confined to a sick bed and unable to take an active part. He has been the choice of the people for county commissioner for eight years, which office he has acceptably filled, manifesting in his care for the welfare of the citizens that interest that has made him so successful in his own financial affairs, and he enjoys the confidence of the people, being held in their esteem commensurate with his own ability and meritorious qualifications.

LUHRS, JOHN, of Pilot Rock, was born in Germany, April 4, 1836. HE came to Oregon in 1858 and settled in Umatilla County in 1863. Mr. Luhrs is an active Republican, and was a delegate to the county conventions to 1884, 1888, and 1890. In 1886 he was elected County Commissioner and served six years, and in 1892, was the nominee for Sheriff.

Leslie Spicer came in last week for a visit with his mother, Mrs. Lillian Spicer, before leaving for the army. He has been at Weber, and has enlisted for special service, which will call for a course of preliminary training at the University of Idaho at Moscow.

Mrs. Jackson Abel of Echo Hears Last Call
ECHO-- Mrs. Jackson Abel, aged 57 died Sunday morning at St. Anthony's hospital in Pendleton. She had been ill for several months.
Mrs. Abel was born at Taunton, Mass., and came to Oregon at the age of 10 and made her home in Echo for the past 10 years. Mrs. Abel leaves her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Janet Skoubo of Pendleton; three sons, Clude Luhrs of Echo, John Luhrs of La Grand and Jim Luhrs of Dallas. Also nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 from the Echo Methodist church. The Rev. Joel Roork will officiate. Roy Smith will sing and the pall bearers will be Steve Spike, John Pedro, Ed Leisegang, Antone Cunha, Ben Gaskill and Frank Spear. The Rebekah lodge will have the graveside services. Buriel will be in the Echo cemetary.

Enterprise Farmer Dies
ENTERPRISE -- Wynne Spicer, about 50, died Saturday morning following an illness of several months. He has farmed in the Alder slope area for many years and was active in farm affairs. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon. Survivors are his widow, Nellie, and two children, Betty and Larry.

Ruby Itha Pratt, 75, of Enterprise died Dec. 18 after a long illness. The funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Enterprise Christian Church.
Mrs. Pratt was born Feb. 6, 1928, to Arthur and Ruby Wright in Moscow, Idaho. She graduated from high school in Genesee, Idaho, and attended both the University of Idaho and later a nursing school in Spokane. On Nov. 11, 1955, she married Delbert W. Pratt at the family farm on Alder Slope.
She was a homemaker and took great pride in the display of flowers in her yard. She led a 4-H group for handicapped children for 19 years. She was given the Helen Keller Award by the Enterprise and Joseph Lions Club.
Survivors include her husband of Enterprise; children and their spouses, Lillian and Doug Edmonds of Philomath, Beverly Pratt of Salem, Susan and David Chriss of Anchorage, Alaska, Joyce Pratt of Enterprise and John and Rebecca Pratt of Salem; and nine grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Enterprise Christian Church or the Emmanuel School of Religion in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.
