History of the Pacific Northwest, Oregon and Washington, 1889
HON. JAMES H. KOONTZ. - It is a mistake to suppose that all the fortunes are made in the large places. Many of the most considerable competences on the coast have been gained from trade in the small towns. The career of Mr. Koontz is to the point.
Born in Belmont county, Ohio, in 1830, young James, upon coming to his physical strength, learned the trade of a carpenter and joiner, thereby acquiring a foundation for a life of independence. Living a time at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, he joined the Ellis train, and in 1862 came across the plains to Oregon, settling the following year at the little town of Umatilla on the desolate shore of the Columbia, - a heaving, driving bank of sand upon the rocks. The place has improved since the old times. Mr. Koontz had but seventy-five cents in his pocket on his arrival; and the stories which he now relates of his first days of work and semi-starvation seem curious and amusing.
By diligent application to his trade, fining employment for a time with George L. Hibbard, he soon had money and built a store at Umatilla, buying for a site ten feet of frontage for two hundred and fifty dollars. Here he remained seventeen years, doing a large forwarding and commission business. In 1864 he was appointed postmaster, and held that office seventeen years also.
In 1880 he established a branch store at Echo, Oregon, and built a large hotel at the same point in 1883, transferring all his business thither. In 1886 he made a further enlargement by building a gristmill of a capacity of eighty barrels of flour per day. This, however, was burned in1886 with three hundred barrels of flour and thirty-two thousand bushels of wheat, at a loss of nearly forty thousand dollars on a n insurance of twenty-three thousand dollars. Although thus unfortunate he was not seriously crippled, but still conducts his tore and hotel with accustomed energy, and follows up the interests of his real estate. He owns a thousand acres of land near the town. Mr. Koontz hopes to rebuild his mill, and is already forming a stock company to that end.
His first wife, Elizabeth Williams, dying at Pleasant Plains, Iowa, he is now living with Cynthia N. Hyatt, whom he married in 1856. They have three children, - Mrs. Elizabeth A. Hendley, Mrs. Flora B. Malcom, and Miss Echo L. Mrs. Koontz merits much of the reward reached by her husband, since it was by her help that his prosperity has been attained.

JOSEPH A. KOONTZ
Joseph A. Koontz, who now resides four miles south of Chewelah and who is one of the most prosperous men of the valley, blessed with good holdings, has manifested in his labors in this county,a tenacity of purpose and energy which are quite rare.In 1883 he selected the place where he now lives and hither he brought his wife and seven children. When they finally arrived after the trying journey, which was full of hardships, they found themselves on a wild tract of land with snow over a foot deep, no human habitation within reach, and night coming on. They camped as best they could. In addition to all this, the fact that Mr.Koontz had not a penny in his pocket nor an allowance of cash from any sources makes us a picture that would have discouraged and disheartened the ordinary man, without doubt. Mr.Koontz went to work and he has kept at it from that time to the present and he has the happy faculty of dispelling his labors with a wisdom and skill which makes them count to the best advantage. He now has a nice band of stock, well improved estate, and a competence for the days to come.
Joseph A.Koontz was born on June 9,1844,in Henry county,Ohio, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (King) Koontz. They remained in Ohio until the time of the death of the father in 1853. Four children were born to them:J.A.William, deceased,John, and Rebekah, deceased. Joseph was educated in the district school but on account of his eyesight failing he was unable to pursue his studies farther. At the age of nineteen he began to work for wages and in 1862 he crossed the plains to Portland. The following spring he and his brother opened a merchandise establishment in Umatilla where they operated for twelve years. The next twelve years were devoted to mining and in 1883 he came to Stevens county as mentioned above.
In 1871 Mr.Koontz married Mrs.Elizabeth Fobb, the widow of Calvin Fobb. She was born in Warsaw,Missouri,February 29,1848, and her parents were natives of Kentucky. The father died in 1850 and the mother moved to Colorado in 1853,where she now lives. Mr. Koontz is a Democrat and holds the office of road supervisor, constable and school director.
To Mr.Koontz and his wife the following children have been born:William H.,Hattie, and Mattie. The last two are deceased.

Oldest Resident Honored in Town Named for Sister
ECHO -- Echo's oldest resident Mrs Elizabeth Hendley, 90, was honored with a surprise party given by friends at the Methodist parsonage recently.
Mrs. Hendley, witty and spry, entertained the group with several piano numbers. Among the songs which she skillfully coaxed from the keyboard was her favorite -- "The Land Where We Never Grow Old."
Does Own Housework
In addition to her talented piano playing, which is only slightly dimmed by her age, Mrs. Hendley does all her own housework and spends much of her leisure reading books.
She was born Elizabeth Koontz, January 13, 1859, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Koontz, of Pleasantplains, Ia.
Though she does not recall teh trip, she crossed the plains at the age of three in a covered wagon. Her parents spent their first WEstern winter at Portland and traveled up the Columbia river to Umatilla in the spring.
Landing with only 75 cents in his pocket, her father soon found employment in the frontier river town and eventually established himself in business.
The family remained in Umatilla for several years until the arrival of the railroad, when they moved to a site near the present city of Echo.
Koontz built a store near where Brick's place now stands and for a time the family ran a hotel in which they also lived. The old store building burned, to be replaced by another structure, but the present hotel is the one built by Koontz.
Her father was one of the first residents of the area to become interested in securing a church and erected the present building, to which rooms have been added as the congregation grew.
Built Home about 1873
About 65 years ago Koontz built a large home for his family. The structure is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Fullerton and still used as a residence.
Mrs. Hendley has survived her parents and two sisters, Flora, who became Mrs. Malcom, and Echo, who married Charlie Miller.
According to Mrs. Hadley, the name of the present city of Echo was decided on the spur of the moment by her father and Lee Moorehouse.
The men were trying to decide on a name for the town which they had just laid out, when Mrs. Koontz stepped to the door of the house and called Echo to come in the house.
"That is what we will call the town -- Echo," Morehouse said. Mrs. Hendley recalled.
Mrs Hendley married Fred Hendly in 1877. The couple operated a store in Umatilla for a short time before coming to Echo to assist Koontz in his store.
Later the couple moved to Pendleton where Hendley was county recorder for two years and then bookkeeper at the state hospital until his death. Mrs. Hendley then returned to Echo where she has since made her home.
She has two daughters, Mrs. Edna Mathis, living with her, and Mrs. Deena Earl, of Mission.

CHO L.3 KOONTZ (JAMES HENRY2, HENRY1) was born 05 Nov 1877 in Umatilla, Umatilla, OR, and died 18 Aug 1908 in Echo. Umatilla, OR51. She married CHARLES H. MILLER.Notes for E
CHO L. KOONTZ:http://echo-oregon.com/history.html
Emigrants began leaving the trail and settling the Echo area c. 1860, making the Echo Meadows one of the first agricultural sites in Umatilla County. Hand dug irrigation ditches insured water to grow alfalfa, corn and other crops during these early years. Later, the Echo area became the center of a huge sheep ranching area. While settlement began in the 1860's, a town was not platted until 1880. JH Koontz and W Brassfield platted the town in 1880 and named it for Koontz' 3-year old daughter, Echo. The railroad which was built through Echo in 1883 brought prosperity. By 1907 the town was a major shipping point for wool, cattle and sheep with a thriving business district. The town was incorporated in 1904.
