1. BERNARD¹ KEENAN was born 01 May 1840 in Ireland, and died 21 Nov 1924 in Sherman, Oregon¹. He married (1) TRIPHANE WILDER 27 Sep 1874 in Weston, Umatilla, Oregon, daughter of HIRAM WILDER and JERUSHA ?. She was born Abt. 1857 in Minnesota. He married (2) LYDIA EMMA WILDER 02 Apr 1876 in Weston, Umatilla, Oregon, daughter of HIRAM WILDER and JERUSHA ?. She was born Jul 1860 in Minnesota, and died 19 Aug 1924 in Pendleton, Umatilla, Oregon.

Bernard Keenan came to America from Ireland about 1853, possibly with older siblings Ellen and Patrick. This was the time of the potato famine in Ireland.

Bernard resided in Iowa until 1857 when he crossed the plains to the gold fields of California. In 1860 he followed the gold trail to Boise Idaho. He drove a stage coach between Boise, Walla Walla and Pendleton until 1863-64, then moved to Walla Walla or Pendleton. He came to Weston Oregon about 1870, married Triphane Wilder and had a daughter, Bertha. After Triphane's death he married her sister, Lydia Emma Wilder, and had Grace, Arthur and Alvin. Bernard and Lydia removed to Biggs Oregon about 1906 where he died November 21, 1924. He is buried in the IOOF Cemetery at The Dalles Oregon.

Weston

Weston is the second oldest town in Umatilla County, after Umatilla. Lieuallen erected the first two houses, a dwelling and a blacksmith shop. Rube Baskett, lawyer, and R.A. Steele, notary public, were the dispensers of law and justice. Charles Patterson drove the first stage coach from Walla Walla through Weston to Pendleton. Barney Keenan, a farmer, was the second man to hold the reins of the stage coach. S.F. Neff was Weston's first schoolmaster.

PIONEER IS DEAD

Bernard KEENAN was a Stage driver between Walla Walla and Pendleton in the early days. 84 years and 6 months of age, a resident at Biggs for the last 18 years and a well known pioneer of Oregon died at his home last night.

Mr. KEENAN drove stage between Walla Walla and Pendleton for a number of years prior to 1870, having come west from Iowa where he settled as a boy in 1857.

Born in the county Cork (Kork) Ireland in 1840.The deceased came to the United States in 1851 and resided in Iowa until 1857, when he went crossed the plains to the gold fields of California.In 1860 he followed the gold trail to Boise, Idaho where he drove stage until 1863-4, moving to Walla Walla and Pendleton.

He moved to Umatilla County in 1870 and resided there for 36 years after which he took residence in Biggs,Oregon.(about 1906) where he lived for the rest of his life.

Mr. KEENAN survived by two daughters and two sons, named as follows, Mrs. Grace SHEARER of Biggs, and Mrs. Bertha NEAGLE of Pendleton, Alva KEENAN (Alvin) of Biggs, Oregon and Arthur of Hoquiam, Washington.

He was predeceased last August by his wife who died in Pendleton, August 19 and was buried in the IOOF Cemetery at The Dalles, Oregon. Funeral Service will be held at the Burget and Calloway Funeral Chapel at 3:00 Saturday afternoon. Rev. FISH will officiate.

Early Blacksmith, Frank Neagle, Dies in Pendleton

PENDLETON -- Frank Neagle, 84, a pioneer resident of Pendleton, died here Wednesday after an illness of two years. He was born in Melbourne Australia, on August 5, 1861, moving to Canada with his parents when he was nine years old.

Later he went to New York, coming here when he was 21. Having learned the machinist's trade, he was employed by Folsom's blacksmith shop. In 1898, he established his own wagon and implement store and shop in partnership with his brother, James.

Also in 1898 he was married to Bertha Keenan, who survives him.

Other suvivors are a daughter Mrs. Nell Olsen, and a Grandson, Forest. he was a prominent member of the Masonic order and the W.O.W.

Bertha Lydia Spletzer, 98, a resident of The Dalles, died Saturday,

November 16, 2002 at a local care facility.

She was born July 11, 1904 in Weston (Oregon) to Harry and Grace Pearl

(Keenan) Shearer and grew up there. Following high school she moved to Spokane

(Washington) and worked in food service at the veterans hospital there until her

retirement.

She married Albert Spletzer in 1947; he preceded her in death in 1971 and she

moved to The Dalles to be near family.

She was a member and past president of the Eagles Auxiliary, and loved to

play bingo and pinochle. She loved animals and was preceded in death earlier this

year by her 22-year-old cat, Sheba.

Survivors include her niece Joyce Bates, The Dalles; and numerous great-,

great-great-, and great-great-great-nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2002 at The Dalles Eagles at Seventh and Walnut streets.

The family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance as her ashes are laid to rest with her husband at the Fairmount Cemetery in Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Home At Last Animal Friends, P.O. Box 390, The Dalles, Oregon 97058.

Arrangements were by Columbia Cremation & Burial.

Ella Erline Ohlegschlager (Huston)(Prince)(Cooper), 82, a resident of The Dalles, OR. died at her home Friday, Mar 2001.

She was born May 10, 1919, in The Dalles, the older of two children, to Roy Harold James and Mary Emma (Shearer) Ohlegschlager. She grew up in Shaniko and Heppner, until moving to her uncle Walts homestead(one of Great grandma Keenans properties) on Upper Mill Creek near The Dalles in 1933. During the great depression many families had to double up and make do.

Ella's father, Roy, was my dad's half brother, Ella's mother was my mothers sister,Mary Emma (Shearer). This threw four young females together. we became, like sisters, Ella being the oldest, me, then my sister, Edwina, then Joyce the youngest. She and her sister Joyce went to the Mill Creek school and on to The Dalles High school with Edwina and I.

Ella married "Bud" Houston first and had a daughter Joyce Marie White) Joyce proceeded Ella in death in 1981,(Joyce Marie was murdered in her bed by an ex husband or boyfriend.)

Ella married 2nd Sam Prince and they had a son, Samuel Prince. She later married her 3rd husband, Whitey Cooper, had n/i, lived in Idaho. When Ella and Whitey were coming from Idaho to attend my parents 50th wedding anniversary at their home on Upper Mill Creek ... an accident happened that changed Ella's life completely ... a deer jumped out in front of the car ... throwing Ella out onto the pavement where she slid on her head doing much damage to her head .... she was never the same, she retired back to her mothers and her Aunt Bertha's home at 905 Case St. The Dalles, She and Whitey were divorced in 1967. She worked as a bartender at the Liberty Club and the Legion Club for many years. She enjoyed storytelling, hunting, fishing, bingo and shuffleboard.

Survivors include her son, Samuel Prince, her aunt Bertha Spletzer, her sister Joyce, all of The Dalles along with 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several neices and nephews.
