William 'Bill' Johns

Athena, Oregon native, William "Bill" Johns, 83, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 2004) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.

At his request, there will be a private graveside service in Athena at a later date.

Bill was born in Pendleton, OR Nov. 28, 1920 to Flint and Eleanor Johns. After graduation from Athena High School in 1938, he attended the University of Oregon graduating with a Master of Science in Geology. On April 19, 1942 in Portland OR, he married Miriam Wood, who survives.

During World War II, he served as a B-17 pilot, and later, a B-29 pilot. Following his discharge, he worked as a geologist on the Reactor Testing Station near Arco, Idaho. When his job completed, he returned to Athena to farm with his brother and two brothers-in-law. Later, he and his three partners became feedlot operators, in addition to their farming. This became so successful they had feedlots in Athena, OR, Ontario, OR, and Idaho. After he retired from farm activities, he continued feeding cattle in Santa Maria, CA, Vancouver, WA, and Independence, OR.

Mr. Johns was involved with the Umatilla and Oregon Cattlemen's Assoc., Oregon Beef Council, and served on the National Cattlemen's Assoc., as a Feeder Representative. The NW Livestock PCA was a favorite organization he served for many years, and he had served as its President before retiring. He was a past commander of the Athena American Legion, PGG board, and belonged to BPOE and UCHS.

After moving from Brookings to the Rogue Valley Manor Plaza, he became a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife survivors include, his son, Tom Johns of Walla Walla, WA; daughter, Sharon Evans of Athena, OR; hs brother, Maurice Johns of Althena; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Smith and Althadel Beamer, and his parents.

ATHENA - Maurice Roscoe Johns, 86, of 78627 Third Street, died Feb. 24, 2009, at his home.

Visitations will be 1-5 pm and 7-9 pm Sunday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862. The funeral will be 11 am Monday at Athena Christian Church. Burial with military honors will be in Athena Cemetery. A lunch for family and friends will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Athena.

Memorial contributions may be made to Athena Public Library, Athena Christian Church or a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.

Mr. Johns was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Athena to Flint Nye and Eleanor Chapman Johns. He grew up and attended school in Athena. He was an outstanding athlete and was named a Little All-American football player by Boys Life Magazine in 1939.

He attended the University of Oregon, returning home to farm at the beginning of WWII.

On May 24, 1944, he entered the U.S. Navy. On Aug. 23, 1947, he married Donna Jeanne Hodgen in Pendleton.

He had a passion for farming, and had farmed for over 70 years. Along with his father, he helped start the green pea industry. Mr. and Mrs. Johns and son, Bob Johns, started Johns Ranch, Inc. in 1974.

Mr. Johns was a member of Athena Christian Church, Pendleton County Club, Oregon-Washington Pea Grower Association, Oregon Wheat Growers League, served as supervisor for the East Umatilla Soil Conservation District and on the Pendleton Grain Growers Board. He was an avid University of Oregon Duck supporter and received the OSU Diamond Pioneer Award.

He coached Little League, was an honorary member of Weston-Athena School Board. He helped establish the Athena Field Day and was involved in the consolidation of the Athena-Weston School District. He enjoyed sharing his farming heritage with his grandchildren.

Mr. Johns is survived by his wife, at the home; a daughter, Nancy Shawyer of Eugene, OR; a son, Bob Johns of Athena; and six grandchildren, Jeff, Jason, Sara and Lisa Irving and Maurice and Meghan Johns. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Johns; and two sisters, Helen Smith and Althadel Beamer.

THOMAS HODGEN

PENDLETON - Former Athena rancher Thomas M. Hodgen, 56, died Jan. 29, 2005, at St. Anthony Hospital.

A celebration of life will be 1 pm Saturday at Pendleton National Guard Armory. A private gravesite serivice with military honors will be in Olney Cemetery.

Mr Hodgen was born July 30, 1948, in Pendleton to Kenneth "Tuk" and Jean Cronin Hodgen. He graduated in 1967 from Pendleton High School, earned an associate degree in drafting from Blue Mountain Community College and attended Eastern Oregon College, La Grande.

While serving at Camp Casey, South Korea, he was a Redeye Missile Technician with the U.S. Army.

On March 31, 1973, he and Barbara Beamer married in Athena. He worked at Hodgen Distrubuting and ranched eight years near Anhena at Johns, Smith and Beamer.

Since 1984 he was a John Deere salesman with Pioneer Implement in Pendleton, now RDO Equipment. His job often took him to the Walla Walla Valley. He received an achievement award and company trips to Monte Carlo and on a Baltic Sea cruise.

He was a fan of Pendleton High School athletics and University of Oregon Ducks and was a Buck Booster.

In Pendleton, he was a member of Prebyterian Church, Elks 288, City Club, Kill Care, Dinner Dance and was a volunteer and participant in Happy Canyon.

He was on the BMCC Agriculture Advisory Board and at Christmas played Santa for local schools and his granddaughter.

He enjoyed reading and golfing; family trips to the beach and mountains; collecting John Deere memorabilia; and special functions for family and friends.

Survivors include his wife at home; daughter and son-in-law, Teri and Bob Rosselle of Adams; son Josepy "Tuk" Hodgen with the U.S. Air Force at Royal Air Force Croughton, United Kingdom; brother Greg Hodgen of Portland; sister Judy Shultz of Portland; aunt and uncle, Donna and Naury Johns of Athena; and a granddaughter.
