WILLIAM C. HINDMAN
Mr. Hindman was born in Pennsylvania on April 30, 1821, being the son of
Samuel and Sarah (Manning) Hindman. His father was a native fo Pennsylvania,
where his ancestors settled prior to the Revolutionary war, in which struggle
they participated, while his father fought in the war of 1812. He was a
millwright and followed his trade in the summer and taught school in the
winter. Our subject's mother was a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and her
ancestors came over with Lord Baltimore and settled in that city. Her father
was a soldier in the Revolutionary war and was present at the memorable time
when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. She was born three years before
Washington was elected for the first time.
Our subject received his primary education in the public schools, and after
he was twenty-one years of age wrought his way through a good academy. His
parents came to Ohio when he was but a child and from that state he went to
Iowa and farmed near Council Bluffs for a time, and then came overland with
ox and horse teams to Baker county, in 1863. For two years subsequent to his
arrival he freighted and then embarked in cattle raising, taking a homstead
and buying enough more land for this enterprise, and to the successful
prosecution of this business he has devoted his entire energies, with the
result of almost unbounded success. He is also interested in mining and owns
some valuable city property. In 1867 he was called from private life by the
ballots of his fellows and charged with the responsible duties of representing
Baker and Union counties in the state legislature, which he did with display
of ability and rigid faithfulness to the interests of his constituents.
The marriage of Mr. Hindman and Miss Sarah Kyle was celebrated in Iowa in 1853;
she was a native of New Brunswick, but reared in Ohio. They became the parents
of seven children: Clara; Phila; Agnes, deceased; Homer; Grace; Frank; Willard.
His sons, Frank and Homer, have charge of his cattle. In 1883 Mrs. Hindman was
called from the duties of her position on earth to the regions beyond.
On November 25, 1897, Mr. Hindman was married a second time, on this occasion
Mrs. Tollie Mounts Douthitt became his wife. Mr. Hindman was brought up under
the teachings of the Presbyterian church, but he has never united with any
denomination, although his life is one of the strictest integrity and
exemplification of the principles of truth.

"Centennial History of Oregon" --
HON. WILLIAM C. HINDMAN is one of the most, if not the most venerable citizen in Baker county, having passed the ninety-first milestone on life's journey. His honorable, upright life and his unfaltering activity have commended him to the confidence and support of the general public. He has today what Shakespeare terms "the blessed accompaniments of age--honor, riches, troops of friends." Because of the length of his years and his prominent connection with Baker county no history of this part of the state would be complete without
extended reference to him. He was born in the town of Ketanning, on the Allegheny river in Pennsylvania, in what was then Armstrong but is now Clarion county, April 30, 1821. His paternal grandfather, David HINDMAN, came from County Donegal, Ireland. He was licensed to preach as a minister of the Presbyterian church and he also figured prominently in the public life of his adopted state as judge of the court of Franklin county. At about that time it was necessary to swear allegiance to the King of Great Britain but he changed the oath so that it would read: "As long as the colonies retained their allegiance to the British crown." One of his brothers went to Virginia and eighty-three years later, when W. C. Hindman was teaching school in Racine, Ohio, an old man one day approached him and asked him if he had relatives in Virgina, telling him of a certain Thomas HINDMAN who had a wife and four children, three daughters and a son. The Indians surprised them and killed the parents and knocked the children on the head, but they were saved by neighbors. The eldest daughter, however, was scalped and ever afterwards wore a cap to cover her head. This Thomas HINDMAN, William C. HINDMAN discovered was a brother of his grandfather. His [Wm.C's] father, Samuel HINDMAN, was also a native of Pennsylvania, in which state his ancestors had settled prior to the Revolutionary war. Representatives of the name participated in that struggle and Samuel HINDMAN was a soldier of the War of 1812. He married Sarah MANNING, a native of Baltimore, Maryland [see her notes for more].
. . . Wm. C. HINDMAN pursued his education in the public schools and in an academy, through which he made his was after attaining his majority. His parents removed to Youngstown, Ohio, when he was but a child and there he was apprenticed as a millwright and also taught school. From that state he went to Iowa, in 1850, engaging in farming near Council Bluffs for a time. He then made the overland trip with ox and horse teams to Baker county, where he arrived in 1863. For two years he engaged in freighting from Umatilla Landing to points in Baker county and then turned his attention to cattle-raising, entering a homestead and adding to this property from time to time . . .
In 1853, Mr. HINDMAN was united in marriage to Miss Sarah KYLE, of Iowa, who was a native of New Brunswick but was reared in Ohio. They became the parents of eight children: Clara, now the wife of Daniel CARN, of McEwen, Oregon; Ida, who died at the age of eight years; Phila B., who is the wife of H.P. KAIZER, of Idaho; Agnes, who became the wife of Leander DAVIS and died at the age of forty-two years, leaving three children; Homer, who died at the age of forty-two years, leaving a widow and four children; Grace, who is located in San Jose, California; Frank, who is living in Alberta, Canada; and W.W., a practicing attorney of Spokane. In 1883 Mr. HINDMAN was called upon to mourn the loss of his wife, and on the 25th of November, 1897, he was again married, his second union being with Mrs. Tollie (MOUNTS) DOUTHITT, a daughter of Noble and Scirilla Thereas (DRAKE) MOUNTS, natives of Virgina and Kentucky respectively . . .
. . . He [Wm.C.HINDMAN] is a man of remarkable memory at the age of ninety-one years. It is said that his mother was a woman of particularly wide knowledge and she stimulated in her son a desire for learning . . .

William C. Hindman

By PEARL JONES
For the Baker City Herald
If we can just dig deep enough into the biographical materials of Eastern Oregon and explore the deeds and accomplishments of our early settlers, we will find that Baker City and County are rich in fascinating history.
We may also find descendants of those same early pioneers still living in Eastern Oregon proudly aware of their heritage and busily participating in the preservation of our past and the development of our future.
This chapter relates the life story of William C. Hindman, the part he played in the early development of Baker City and County and gathers his many descendants into the ongoing saga of the Hindman Family.
William Conley Hindman was born in Pennsylvania on April 30, 1821. His parents were Samuel and Sarah Manning Hindman, who raised a family of four daughters and six sons, some of whom came to settle the West. The family moved to Ohio when William C. was only a child but he received a good education with training as a millwright and a teacher.
In 1850 William moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he took up farming, married Sarah Kyle and fathered five children. In those Iowa years he evinced great interest in local government and served in various positions for development and progress.
In 1863 William captained a wagon train that brought his family to Auburn. Not pleased with that location, William soon relocated to the valley where Baker City was arising on the banks of the Powder River and prime farm land was readily available.
He homesteaded land in the Pocahontas district and became the first farmer to plant potatoes. For the next two years he ran a freight line between Umatilla Landing and Baker County in partnership with his brother, McClure Hindman.
McClure had followed his brother west in 1864 bringing his family to settle in the Durkee area, and his story needs telling also, for his son was Henry Albert, more commonly known as Albert, one of the developers of the Durkee area and an integral figure of that history.
Looking now to the future, the brothers left the freighting to others and took up the profession of stock raising, William in Pocahontas and McClure at Durkee.
They pioneered the industry that is yet today an ongoing and vital industry of Baker County. Two other brothers, Jesse and Samuel, settled at Elgin and Sisters, extending the Hindman name over much of Eastern Oregon.
William had now added three more children to his family, making a total of eight who needed schooling. He built a home at 1931 Fifth St.. in Baker City, just west of the then boundary of Baker City, the location showing on one of the early Sanborn maps of the city.
This home was probably demolished when the stone high school was built in 1916, for it was located in what is today the recreation yard of the junior high annex.
William C. Hindman was a great asset to the growth and development of Baker County especially in the agricultural field. I found this quote in one of William's biographical accounts:
"He is a man of remarkable memory at the age of 91 years. It is said that his mother was a woman of particularly wide knowledge and she stimulated in her son a desire for learning. Throughout his life he has remained a student, reading widely and thinking deeply, and to him has been preserved the precious prize of keen mentality.
"Moreover, in business affairs, his career has been one of strictest integrity and an honorable, upright life has gained for him the confidence and high regard of all and made his example well worthy of emulation."
Always interested in his civic duties, William C. Hindman cast his first presidential vote in Ohio for President Polk. In Baker County in 1866 Hindman was elected as State Representative for his district, comprising Baker and Union counties.
Several years before those official duties began, William had campaigned for and won 11 votes for Pocahontas as the choice for Oregon's state capitol — but Salem won.
His term as representative earned Hindman even more acclaim for his dependability and diligence in working for the people as well as his cooperation with his fellow legislators.
William's lifelong companion and helpmate, Sarah Kyle Hindman, died in 1887, but the close knit family life weathered this loss. The only other death in the family had been in 1864 with the loss of eight year old Ida.
William remarried in 1897 to Tollie Mounts Douthitt. William died in 1917 in California where he had just recently gone and his wife, Tollie, in 1924.
The name of William Conley Hindman is firmly ensconced in the annals of Baker County history and his descendants are still here today keeping his memory alive unto each succeeding generation.
The current telephone directory of Baker City and La Grande with their respective counties gives 36 Hindman names, 19 of them from Baker County. William C. is represented by descendants of his son Homer and his wife Grace Oakes, followed by grandson Richard Conrad and wife, Grace, then to great-grandson, Richard John and wife, Joyce. The great-great-grandson is Richard Christian and wife Chrissanne, but now we can also add a great-great-granddaughter, Kerri Hindman Smith and husband, Sherwood.
These third and fourth generations seem to be satisfied with the land that William C. Hindman chose back in 1863, and they still make their homes here in Eastern Oregon. Richard, Sr., is retired, Richard, Jr., is manager of the family business, Cashway Lumber and Kerri as superintendent of schools in North Powder
But the story doesn't end there. We have a fifth generation of great-great-great grandchildren to continue this Hindman saga. They are Richard, Jeremy, Emily and Katy, children of Richard and Chrissanne Hindman with Breonne, Dylan and Kelsey, children of Kerri and Sherwood Smith.
What will this proud heritage mean to them?

Notes for SAMUEL M W HINDMAN:
http://www.fredbecker.org/News%20Letter/SistersHist.htm
During 1879, Samuel M.W. Hindman and his family homesteaded the Camp Polk site. In 1875, Hindman established a post office and a store and became the community's first postmaster. At this time, the area between the Cascades and the Deschutes River was virtually uninhabited, but destined to bustle with the future movement of cattle and sheep over the Santiam Pass.
City of Sisters
While Hindman was developing Camp Polk, the nearby Sisters site was being transformed from a ranch to a town. During the 1880's, large flocks of sheep were driven past the town site to summer pastures in the high Cascades. Sisters was the last settlement between Prineville and the mountains and consequently early entrepreneurs did a brisk business in the summer months

Historic Camp Polk barn "going south"
By Martin Winch
The old Hindman barn is leaning 12 degrees to the south.
What remains of the old barn near the Camp Polk Cemetery is leaning south. In May, the lean was 9 degrees. By this month it has increased to 12 degrees.
Preservationists fear this could be the winter it goes down, as the lookout tower on Black Butte fell last winter during an ice storm.
The barn is believed to be the oldest structure still standing in Deschutes County. Samuel Hindman built the barn around 1870 as part of the first homestead in today's Deschutes County.
The barn also served travelers coming to Central Oregon on the first wagon road to cross the mid-Cascades. The Hindmans operated a road station at the site, with temporary lodging for travelers and their wagons and stock.
The barn stayed in the Hindman family until 1940, and was actively used into the 1960s. Maintenance did not keep up with the barn's gradual deterioration. People began taking barn boards for picture frames and mementos. In 1990, a windstorm badly damaged the roof. Today only the core structure remains.
In 2000, the Deschutes Basin Land Trust acquired the Hindman barn and the site of Camp Polk. This was part of a larger acquisition: the meadow along Squaw Creek. The Land Trust acquired the meadow in order to restore and protect riparian habitat along Squaw Creek in preparation for restoring anadromous fish runs across Lake Billy Chinook and up Squaw Creek.
The barn hardly looks like a barn today. It is missing its roof, and the standing timbers outline only the center section of the original structure. Sixteen posts, roughly 10 inches square by 14 feet tall, stand on equally massive sills and support top plates 64 feet long made from single logs.
Up close, one can see that all of these timbers were hewn by hand with a broad ax. It is post-and-beam construction, each mortise, tenon and wooden peg fashioned with a few simple tools and a lot of time.
The remains of the historic Hindman barn stand close to the site of an Army camp where 40 men from Polk and Benton counties were stationed from September 1865 into May, 1866. It is possible that some of the barn timbers were originally felled by these soldiers for their camp buildings.
Time and the weather have taken their toll on the old barn. The sills and top plates, especially, have deteriorated badly, cross bracing is missing and the foundation (flat rocks at key points under the sills) is insecure.
Opinions are mixed about what can be saved, and for what

Among the earliest settlers of this county may be named JEROME LaFOLLETTE and Samuel M. W. HINDMAN, who took up claims on Squaw creek in about 1869. Hindman kept a station for several years and still lives on the tract of land upon which he settled over thirty years ago. Willow Creek was one of the earliest settled portions of Crook county. JAMES BLAKELY, PERRY READ, CAN. MONTGOMERY and S. G. WOOD were among the first settlers there. BLAKELY was the first elected sheriff of Crook county, and served in that capacity two years.

ALBERT HINDMAN
This honored pioneer and esteemed citizen of Express was born in Council Bluff, Iowa, on May 14, 1855. When nine years old he accompanied the remainder of the family to Baker county, Oregon, where they again engaged in farming, their location being four miles west of Baker City. Our subject received only a very limited education, the largest portion of his time and energy being devoted to the development and improvement of the parental homestead, upon which he wrought until he became twenty three years of age.
Mr. Hindman then took a homestead about fifteen miles east of Baker City, and engaged for himself in the business of farming and rearing cattle, apparently achieving excellent success therein, for he is now the owner of eight hundred and forty acres of land. A part of this has been laid out into town lots, streets, alleys, etc., and upon it the town of Express is springing up. Our subject is the owner of quite a herd of cattle and horses, including some very choice Shorthorn and Hereford males and a Percheron stallion.
Mr. Hindman is one of the leading farmers and stockmen in the county, thrifty, energetic and progressive, while as a man and citizen his standing is one of which he has every reason to be proud. His benevolence was manifested in his having donated the ground for a union church in Express, and in his liberally contributing to the same, but it has also found expression in many other ways. A public spirited man, he takes an active interest in all affairs of general concern in town, county, and state, though he has never displayed any special ambition for political preferment or personal aggrandisement.
Our subject married, at Baker City, Oregon, on December 10, 1882, Miss Addie, daughter of E. R. and Annie Powers, and the issue of their union is five children, Claude O., Elmer C., Fannie E., Edgar I. and Amy E.
