Suicide - On Saturday last, Robert Hendricks, Jr. assistant on the Plains Dealer, received a telegram conveying the sad intelligence, his father, R.J. Hendricks, had commited suicide on his farm near Oakland on Friday. Mr. Hendricks had been affected for some time with affections of the head, and it is thought he commited the deed while in a fit of temporary insanity. He was about forty-eight years of age.
The Western Star, November 5, 1880, page 3 col. 4
R.J. Hendricks a respected citizen of Elkhead, commited suicide on the 29th nlt. by shooting himself in the head with a pistol. Mr. Hendricks was 48 years old, and was a man of extra good mind, well posted on all the current topics of the day. A close student no one new (sic) the bible better than he. But a few days before his death he was noticed to be sad and he was closely watched by his family for a while, but on Friday last he succeeded in slipping a gun and pistol out and walked ever a mile from home to an old barn, and killed himself. His son and other friends found him there on Saturday morning, cold in death.

LEN OWEN2 HENDRICKS (ROBERT JACKSON1) was born 04 Jul 1857 in Dallas, Polk Co. OR, and died 17 Apr 1919 in Portland, Multnomah Co. OR7. He married MARY HATTIE MARKHAM Abt. 1882, daughter of JOHN MARKHAM and MARY EMERSON. She was born Jan 1861 in Kansas.Notes for G
LEN OWEN HENDRICKS:HISTORY OF OREGON pg. 172 GLEN OWEN HENDRICKS (no further publication information)
Glen Owen Hendricks spent the latter part of his life in Portland, where he passed away on the 17th of April, 1919. For a number of years before, however, he had been identified with fruit raising in the northwest. He was born near Dallas, Oregon, in 1857, a son of Robert J. and Mary Jane (Sherwood) Hendricks who came across the plains with ox team and wagon at an early day. Arriving in Oregon they settled on a farm near Dallas and afterward removed to Walla Walla, Washington. At a later period, however, they returned to this state, taking up their abode in Douglas county where the father purchased a large tract of land which he developed into a good home and thereon spent his remaining days, becoming prominently identified with the upbuilding and improvement of that section of the state.
Glen O. Hendricks acquired his early education in the district schools and afterward continued his studies at Oakland, Oregon, and also in the University of Oregon. He later took up the profession of school teaching which he followed for several years and during that period carefully saved his earnings until his industry and economy enabled him to start out in the live stock business on his own account in eastern Oregon. He operated in Harney county and successfully followed the business for several years, continuing active along that line until 1913 when he sold out and removed to Washington. There he purchased a fine fruit ranch;, but owing to failing health he was forced to retire from active business and in 1917 took up his abode in Portland where he passed away on the 17th of April, 1919.
Mr. Hendricks was married in 1882 to Miss Mary Hattie Markham, a daughter of J.S. and Mary Jane Markham, the former a native of Missouri and the latter of Indiana. In 1875 Mr. Markham came to Oregon with his family and resided in this state until 1883, when he removed with the members of his household to Washington where he still resides at the advanced age of eighty-six years. His wife, however, passed away April 29, 1920, at the age of eighty years. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks, namely: Charles Francis, who is living at Puyallup, Washington; Vivian Viola, the wife of W. E. Gray, of Emmett, Idaho; Vera Antonia, the deceased wife of H. H. Gay, of Centralia, Washington; Bessie, who died in infancy; Lillian Lucretia, a nurse who resides at home; Mary Hattie, who was graduated from the Normal School in 1917 and is now teaching; and Glen Owen, Jr., who resides in Portland.
Mr. Hendricks was a republican in his political views and his religious faith was indicated by his membership in the Christian church. His life was guided by high and honorable principles and the sterling worth of his character was acknowledged by all with whom he came into contact. He was a reliable and progressive business man and a faithful friend and those who knew him entertained for him warm regard.

He married (1) GLORIUNDA GIESY Abt. 1885 in Aurora, Marion Co., Oregon, daughter of JOHN GIESY and BARBARA ?. She was born Abt. 1863 in Aurora, Marion Co., Oregon, and died 10 May 1886 in Fossil, Wheeler Co. OR. He married (2) MARY M. MCKENZIE 25 Nov 1887 in Fossil, Wheeler Co., OR. She was born Oct 1859 in Wisconsin, and died 07 Jan 1939 in Wheeler Co., OR16.Notes for H
AMILTON HAMLIN HENDRICKS:History of Central Oregon, Pub. 1905
"H.H. Hendricks, a leading attorney of Wheeler County residing in Fossil, was born in Polk County, Oregon on February 26, 1861. He has gained good success in his profession and made himself one of the substantial and capable men of this part of the state and to his credit it may be said that he has accomplished it all through his own efforts, being entirely a self-made man. His father, Robert J. Hendricks was born in Knox County, Illinois, in 1832 and crossed the plains in 1852. After that, he resided in Yamhill County a time, then went to Polk County, thence Umatilla county, and died in Douglass county in 1880. In Yamhill county in 1854, he married Mary J. Sherwood, who was born in Fulton County, Illinois, in 1838 and crossed the plains with her parents in 1850. She is still living in Cottage Grove, Oregon. In 1868, the family came to what is now Olex, Gilliam county then a wilderness, and a year later, settled in Umatilla county. In 1873, they moved to Douglass and in these various places our subject gained his primary education in the public schools. When fourteen, he left home and learned the printers trade in Roseburg, Oregon. Two years later, he attended the Wilbur Academy and the next year taught his first term at school. Then following a year of newspaper work, he entered the state university at Eugene and graduated in 1883, receiving the degree of B.S. He practically earned his way through, working during vacations as compassman for the government survey in Lake County. After graduation he took a position on the Daily Statesman at Salem, Oregon, as city editor and business manager. This was to finish paying his college expenses and to gain his support in the study of law. Then he entered the law offices of Ford and Kiser in Salem, where he was continuously for eighteen months. Then he moved to Glliam county continuing his law reading and on the creation of that county in 1885 he was appointed superintendent of the county schools. At the next election, he was chosen by the people to fill that office; and in 1887 he was admitted to the bar and began his practice of law at Fossil that same year. For several years he maintained an office at Condon in partnership with H.B. Hendricks and later in partnership with Jay Bowerman. Mr. Hendricks is achieving splendid success in his profession and shows himself a man of ability and integrity. His library shows skill in selection and is up to date. The brothers of our subject now alive Glen O., a stockman in Harney county; H.B., an attorney and real estate man at Grants Pass; R.J., Jr., manager of the Salem Daily Statesman; John R., a stockman in Harney County; David A., a newspaperman in Montana.
In 1885, Mr. Hendricks married Gloriunda Giesy, who was born in Marion County, Oregon. She died at Fossil a year after her marriage, leaving an infant son, William Giesy Hendricks, who is now attending Portland Academy. At Fossil, on November 25, 1887 Mr. Hendricks married Mary M. McKenzie, she was born in Wisconsin and raised near Kansas City, Kansas. The children of this union are: Robert H., sixteen years old; Ford H., fifteen years of age; Carl H., aged thirteen; Winlock H, eleven years old; and Mary E., nine years old.
Mr. Hendricks belongs to the Masonic fraternity, the K.P., the W.W., M.w.a, and the Eastern Star. Politically, he is a Republican, while in religious persuasions he is identified with the Unitarians"

HENDRICKS, Robert Jackson
R. J. Hendricks Signs '30' to 63 Years of Editing.
Veteran Editor Served Widely.
Work for University, YMCA, Church, City, Recognized.
Word of the death Tuesday afternoon of R. J. Hendricks came as a surprise to men over the state who had worked for and with the veteran newspaperman and civic leader. To The Statesman on Tuesday came these expressions:
"For the past 50 years R. J. Hendricks had given unsparingly of his time and talent in the support of every movement for civic betterment. He was a charter member of the Salem YMCA and served continuously on the board of directors from the beginning of the work in Salem. He was a valued and untiring worker on the board of trustees of Willamette university. In his death Salem has lost an ardent advocate and loyal friend." - Paul B. Wallace, President YMCA board of directors and pormer president Willamette university trustees.
"Forty years ago Mr. Hendricks joined the first Congregational church. During the past half century he contributed freely of his time and his ability toward leadership and Christian work. The members of the church, young and old, knew him and loved him. His death will be mourned be all who have felt the warmth of his friendly guidance." - Dr. Egbert S. Oliver, State moderator, Congregational church.
"Long a member of the Salem Rotary club, Mr. Hendricks was faithful in attendance. All of us, the younger men as well as those older ones with whom he was most closely associated have missed him in his favorite place at the front of the room.: - Tinkham Gilbert, former president, Salem Rotary club.
"Mr. Hendricks will be long remembered for the constructive work he did for the state of Oregon and the city of Salem, and by the legion of those who were privilege to serve with him in those efforts." - Robert C. Notson, managing editor of The Oregonian, whose early reporting experience was with the Statesman.
"I was associated with 'Bob' Hendricks for 10 years and have never known a kinder man. He was an entertaining conversationalist, read widely and thought deeply. Age crept upon him slowly, due, I think, to two things, an unflagging industry and his never-failing interest in young people." - Stephen A. Stone, former Statesman managing editor and now city editor of The Capital Journal.
"No one ever had a better boss or a finer man to work for. He was generous to a fault. You might say he was his own worst enemy: He did so much for the community to his own detriment." - Ralph Glover, for 25 years in The Statesman business office, now, H. L. Stiff company credit manager.
"Mr. Hendricks unfailing cheerfulness and courtesy, his unequaled diligence and his sincere devotion to the best interests of the community and humanity in general, were and inspiring example to all who were associated with him in newspaper work." - Ralph C. Curtiss, state editor, The Statesman.
Oregon Statesman 20 Jan 1943 1:1.
Polk Native Dies; Rites Thursday
R. J. Hendrickson, editor emeritus of The Statesman, with which newspaper he had been associated for 58 years, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of his son, Paul R. Hendricks, Salem attorney.
Five weeks earlier he had sent his last "Bits for Breakfast" column to the printers, admitted feeling unwell and had gone home and to bed with pneumonia, which next day sent him to the hospital. Two weeks ago, he was able to return to his son's home, but the anticipated convalescence did not follow.
Funeral services are to be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday from the Clough-Barrick chapel, with interment in the Odd Fellow cemetery.
Seventy nine years old at the time of his death, Mr. Hendricks had not limited his working years to the newspaper profession, although he had always swung back to his desk in The Statesman office. He was from 1892 to 1896 the first superintendent of the state training school for boys, then situated east of Salem, spending his evenings there studying law.
For a year after his return to the city to make his home he practices law here. At the time of the Spanish American war he was called to 'Portland to serve for 18 months as "US appraiser of customs." In 1910 he was director of the census for a large portion or western Oregon, filling the same position in 1930, when the census area had been cut considerably in size.
Robert Jackson Hendricks was born May 6, 1863, on a farm in Cooper hollow, Polk county, between Dallas and Monmouth, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Russell Hendricks. He had his early schooling at Jacksonville and Athena and served his apprenticeship to the printer's trade at Roseburg and Eugene.
At the age of 16 he began his newspaper career, and a year later became editor and manager of the Roseburg Plaindealer. While a student at the University of Oregon, he utilized his spare time operating a Washington hand press, doing job printing and setting type for the Oregon State Journal, published by Harrison R. Kincade in Eugene from 1864 to 1909.
In 1884, after serving as a hand compositor in the old Standard office, Portland, Hendricks came to Salem with $900 in earnings as a printer and proceeds from sale of a piece of property he had purchased while yet a university student.
With George A. Saubert, also from Roseburg, he bought the interest of W. H. Odell in The Statesman, and became editor and manager of the paper, continuing at that post for 44 years. Otheres bought and sold interest in the newspaper, but Mr. Hendricks continued as the head of the institution.
The enterprising young owners of The Statesman in 1893 bought the second and third linotype machines in the state, were firmly optimistic not only about the future of the then - new labor saving devices but about the state as a whole and the Willamette valley in particular.
At his editorial desk Mr. Hendricks felt the pulse of the community as he, an ardent worker for the state's advance, knew it. For many years, up to the time of his death, he was a member of the board of trustees of Willamette university, serving much of that time on the important faculty committee. Long active on the directorate of the Salem YMCA, he had served as president of that body and was an interested participant in the work of not only his own church, the First Congregational, but of other denominations as well. He was for a number of years a member of the city library board.
As a newspaperman, he made the force of his publications felt outside the area of its actual circulation by employing numerous young men from the university here and from nearby institutions of higher learning who, under his tutelage, became outstanding in the field of journalism over the nation.
In 1928, he and his partner of 25 years, Carl Abrams, sold the publishing company to Earl F. Brownlee and Sheldon F. Sackett, who later, at separate intervals, sold to Charles A. Sprague, present owner. But Hendricks remained as editor emeritus and columnist, devoting consistently longer hours to the task of delving into the sources of history of the Oregon country.
First major result of this work was his book, "Bethel and Aurora," dramatic story of the settlement of Aurora. In recent years his research material had been published in smaller booklets and much of it had been woven into a sequence of radio programs which he was in the process of marketing at the time of his death.
On January 25, 1888, he married Emilie Geisy of Aurora, who had attended Willamette university for two years just previous to their wedding. To this union were born three sons, of whom Paul Hendricks, now serving as city defense commander, survives.
On May 10, 1942, four days after men of the city and former employees from over the state had honored the veteran publisher at a large birthday dinner, he and Mrs. Hendricks were involved in an automobile accident, that resulted in her death on June 3.
Mr. Hendricks made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hendricks after leaving the hospital last summer but had never regained full use of his injured leg.
Survivors include, in addition to the one son, two brothers, John Ray Hendricks of Cottage Grove and Hamilton H. Hendricks of Fossil.
Oregon Statesman 20 Jan 1943 1:2
We bow in silent tribute this morning to the memory of Robert J. Hendricks.
For nearly three -score years he was identified with this newspaper, most of the time as its editor and principal owner; and since 1928 as contributor through his historical column "Bits for Breakfast." He was revered by all of the Statesman family, and those of us who have been associated with him bore him close affection. We have been saddened to see his powers wane, and feel now a genuine grief that the companionship as friend and fellow-workman is sundered.
A native of Oregon and educated in its common schools and state university, Mr. Hendricks in his career linked the Oregon of pioneer days with the modern state. He recalled Senator Joe Lane as a resident of Douglas county and knew the prominent men of Oregon from the early 70's onward. Always a builder, he threw his abundant energies into the task of developing his newspaper, his business enterprises, his city and his state.
It was on August 18, 1884, that Mr. Hendricks joined The Statesman as editor and manager. With George H. Saubert, another printer, who still lives on the Siuslaw near Cushman, he had bought the half interest in the paper from W. H. Odell, one-time surveyor general. In 1885 they bought the other half from W. H. Byars, state printer, and incorporated the business as The Statesman Publishing company. Through various associations in the ownership of the corporation Mr. Hendricks continued as its executive head until his retirement in 1928. Even then The Statesman remained his great interest and here he kept his desk and continued his literary work.
Mr. Hendricks was a dreamer, and many of his dreams did not come true. But out of his vision many substantial enterprises developed - The Statesman is itself largely his monument for he directed it for a much longer period than anyone else. Many of the civic and industrial enterprises in Salem were fostered by him; the old street car lines, the woolen mill, the old 12th street cannery, the Salem Y.M.C.A. For him there was no standing still; always there was work to do. In his last illness he was impatient to be back to his office to resume his work.
His mind was a veritable storehouse of information. A new reporter could always turn to him to identify name and get local connections. He adhered to a true printer's standard of accuracy in fact and typography.
Reared in the republicanism of the post Civil war period, he was staunch in his political faith, and wrote effectively on political matters for his editorial columns.
In the fullness of his years he came like a shock of corn ripe for the harvest. And we who saw him in strength of mind and body, who knew the rich gentleness of his nature would not grieve that, weary from his work, he lies down in quiet sleep.

Personal Records, Maureen (Molly) McGUIRE COLSON:
During World War I Grandpa had the only assay office between Portland, OR, and San Francisco, CA. At first he operated it in Grants Pass, then built an assay office very near the log home he built on Laureldale Lane. It can be seen in the older photographs of the house and in the painting by Louis J. Arnold.
****************
When Grandpa was a boy in White Salmon, WA, a traveler came to town with a phonograph. It was the first one anyone had ever seen and the traveler charged admission to listen to it.
************
Grandpa wanted to learn how to play the fiddle, but couldn't afford to buy one, so he built his own. Later when he had more money, he bought one from the Montgomery Ward Catalog.
**********
Grandpa & Grandma had lots of livestock over time, cows, etc. The last pair of hogs they had were about 1945-46, named Ham and Bacon, so noone would forget what their ultimate purpose would be.
**************
THE CROUCH FAMILY by Pearl Crouch Rice
My father, Ernest Roy Crouch had been a chemical engineer and assayer in Southern Oregon. He studied at home and passed the State examination. Gold fever had been the lure which brought his tall, portly father, Oscar, his three brothers, Earl, Erwin, and Edwin (Ted), from the Portland [Oregon] area around 1900. They must have had a roistering good time, fishing and hunting with no licenses or limits and few bounaries or fences. They took only what was needed for food, however, using deer hides for leather, bear hides for rugs, goose down for pillows, and rendered bear grease for their hair and boots.
Mother's family settled in the Grants Pass area about the same time, coming from Tillamook, Cottage Grove and Roseburg. Her father, Hugh Bell Hendricks, had been an early day teacher near Roseburg. He had fallen in love with his star pupil, Nancy Jane Gilkison, a tiny, winsome fifteen year old, and married her.
My Hendricks grandparents raised their family of two boys, Cassius and Robert, and one girl, Daisy Bell (my mother) in the Grants Pass area where other members of their family, the GHkisons, lived. Grandpa Hendricks was also an attorney and real estate entrepreneur in the burgeoning community. A plat of Grants Pass shows an "H. B. Hendricks" Subdivision.
Mother was a beauty and the darling of her handsome uncles and brothers. She loved to dance and play the piano. Besides working in her father's law office, she received some training at the St. Mary's Academy at Medford. Here she remembers leaming that a young lady does not spread her butter with a fork.
Grandma Hendricks became a "divorced" woman, a rarity in those days especially in the strait-laced Gilkison family. Grandpa sought greener pastures and sued for divorce. He never remarried, however, ending his days living in a cabin up Louse Creek, a recluse and poet.
Grandma, independent as a "hog on ice," five feet two of determination and grit, picked hops and packed apples with her daughter, Daisy, for a living. Later, with her son, Cash, she opened THE SPA, a candy and confectionery store, first on Sixth Street where Boyko's Stationery [between E and F Streets, on the NW corner of the alley] was and later on "G" Street about where the Rogue Craftsmen is located [in the 100 block on the Southwest side of the Street]. She also operated rooming houses at 310 West "L" Street and at the old Hollowell house on the corner of Seventh & F Streets.
My impulsive mother answered an ad for a cook at the Alameda Mine near Galice which employed over one hundred men. She was hired immediately by my father, the foreman. He set about straightaway wooing her for the more permanent position as his wife. They were married for over fifty years.
Daddy also worked as a mine foreman at the Boswell Mine, the Ashland Mine, the Golden Note Mine; had an assay office on Sixth Street and traveled over Southern Oregon and Northern California during the first World War assaying chrome for the government. However, finding the assay work too confining, he first rented, and later
owned a fruit orchard (Laureldale Orchard) located about three miles from town. At the time, it was one of the largest peach orchards in Jackson and Josephine County. This is where he raised his family, but all that is another story. From Pearl of the Peach Orchard by Pearl Crouch Rice.
****************
From Daily Courier, Grants Pass, OR--Week of May 15, 1914
"E. R. Crouch is fitting up an asssay office in the Paddock Building and wil lbe ready for business May 15. Mr. Crouch has 10 years experience in assaying and chemical work."
