An Illustrated History of Klickitat, Yakima and Kittitas Counties, Interstate Publishing Co., Chicago, IL., 1904

ARKELLAS D. HARTLEY. Among the progressive farmers and stock raisers of Klickitat county, the man whose name initiates this article must be given a place. He resides on his farm of 160 acres eight miles east of the city of Goldendale, in rural free delivery district No. 1. He was born in Franklin county, Illinois, March 1, 1860, the son of David and Amanda (Dollans) Hartley, the father a native of the Blue Grass state, born in 1837, to Scotch parents. The older Hartley, a farmer and gardener by occupation, crossed the Plains to Oregon in 1865, came thence to Klickitat county in 1879 and now resides in Goldendale. His brother is a Civil war veteran. His wife, the mother of our subject, is a native of Illinois, born in 1839. Arkellas D., whose life record it is here our purpose to outline, was but five years old when he came to Oregon with his parents. He grew to the age of twenty on the parental farm in Alarion county, attending the local common schools. When old enough to shoulder the responsibilities of life, he chose farming as his occupation and he followed it in Oregon until i888, when he came to Klickitat county and homesteaded a quarter section of land. No sooner had he acquired an inchoative right to the property than he began energetically the task of improving it and he has resided on the place continuously since. He raises grain, wheat, oats, and other farm products very successfully fruits of various kinds and stock.

Mr. Hartley was married first in J883. the lady of his choice being Miss Rachel Clymer, who died, leaving one child, Mary Wenona, born in Linn county, Oregon. His second marriage occurred October 6, 1886, when Miss Winnie Parrott, a native of Missouri, born in 1869, became his wife. She is the daughter of George and Martha (Ewell) Parrott, the former a native of Cook county, Tennessee, born February 10, 1833. Mr. Parrott is an early pioneer of Klickitat county, to whom more extended reference is made elsewhere in this volume. Mrs. Hartley's mother, who was born near St. Joe, Missouri, January 3, 1859. still lives near Goldendale. Mr. Hartley's sisters and brother are: Mrs. Laura Shank, living in Umatilla county, Oregon: Mrs. Nellie Mosier, in Klickitat county; Mrs. Ella Mosier, a resident of Oregon City. Oregon; Mrs. Anna Current, in Goldendale; and Frank, on the Nez Perce reservation, in Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Hartley have no children of their own, but have one adopted son, George. They are both members of the Christian church in Goldendale, and of the Grange in school district number six. In politics, Mr. Hartley is a Democrat. He is a member of the school board and is doing all he can, in his locality, for the amelioration and extension of educational opportunities. An energetic farmer, a good citizen and a genial, approachable man of strict integrity, he stands high in the esteem and regard of his neighbors and associates.

He married MARY MYRTLE GLEASON Nov 1900 in Forest Grove, Washington, Oregon, daughter of JOHN GLEASON and HARDENIA NAYLOR. An Illustrated History of Klickitat, Yakima and Kittitas Counties, Interstate Publishing Co., Chicago, IL., 1904

HARVEY H. HARTLEY, M.D., a physician and surgeon in the city of Goldendale, Washington, is an energetic, progressive young man who enjoys the confidence of his fellow men and those in his own profession. He was born in Washington county, Oregon, near Forest Grove, September 12, 1871, to the union of James C. and Martha (Givens) Hartley, pioneers of Oregon. James C. Hartley, who is still engaged in farming near Forest Grove, is a native of Illinois, born July 10, 1845. He is a veteran of some of the Oregon and Washington Indian wars and took part in quelling the Klamath Indian outbreak. He came across the Plains in 1864 and has spent most of his western life in Washington county. Mrs. Hartley was born in Indiana in the year 1850. She first crossed the Plains as a child only three years old, and twelve years later made a second trip, both times riding in wagons drawn by oxen. Mrs. Hartley has one brother, Doctor Givens, superintendent of the insane asylum at Blackfoot, Idaho. The father is of German descent, the mother of Welsh. Dr. Hartley attended the public schools of Washington county and in 1897 was graduated by Pacific University, at Forest Grove; three years later he received the degree of Master of Arts from this well known institution. After graduation he matriculated in the medical department of the University of Oregon at Portland, and from it he received the degree of M. D. During the next fourteen months he practiced in the hospitals of Multnomah county, Oregon. He came to Klickitat county in May, 1900, locating first at Centerville, then in Goldendale, and since that time has built up a most satisfactory and lucrative practice in the community.

Dr. Hartley married, at Forest Grove, Oregon, in November, 1900, Miss Mary M. Gleason, a native of Washington county and a daughter of the well known pioneers, John E. and Hardenia (Naylor) Gleason. Mrs. Gleason was born near Forest Grove in 1850, her parents being among the earliest settlers in that locality. Dr. Hartley has two brothers, Joseph J., residing at Banks, Oregon, and Clarence, who recently graduated in dentistry, and is now practicing his profession in Portland. His sister, May Hartley, is a student in Pacific University. Dr. and Mrs. Hartley have one child, Frederick, born Christmas day, 1901. Dr. Hartley is a member of several fraternities, the Masons, 0. E. S., Order of Washington, Woodmen of the World and Modern Woodmen of America. Politically, he is a Democrat. A popular member of the community, highly esteemed personally and an excellent physician, he is sure to win unusual success in the profession he has chosen.

Victims Of Car Accident

----------

A coroner's hearing on the death of Mrs. May Blades, of Maryhill, who was struck by an automobile and instantly killed at Centerville last Thursday night, was held at the courtroom in Goldendale Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The jury, composed of Frank Branton, E. Bruner, E.O. Shipp, C.H. Knosher, Roy Walker and Paul Hause, acting on the testimony of ten witnesses, brought in a verdict of accidental death. This completely exonerated Otis Anderson, of Centerville, driver of the car which struck and killed Mrs. Blades and injured her companion, Miss Doris Rudolph.

Both ladies were teachers in the Centerville school, and at the time of the accident, were on their way to a Christmas entertainment being staged in the school house that evening.

According to the testimony of Anderson, who was questioned by prosecuting attorney C.W. Ramsey, he was driving his car, a Model A Ford roadster, between 20 and 25 miles an hour, on his way to the Christmas entertainment at the high school. With him were Mrs. Henry Wiidanen and daughter Ruth.

The car lights were good, but the windshield of the automobile frosty, according to Anderson; also, he said, there were no street lights, and this, coupled with the fact that the ladies were dressed in dark clothing, prevented his seeing them until it was too late to avoid the collision. He was driving in the center of the road, and the women were walking a little to the left, it was disclosed.

Applying his brakes, Anderson said, he leaped from the car and ran to the side of Miss Rudolph, who was lying in the road. When questioned as to the position of the body of Mrs. Blades, he replied that at the time he was unaware that he had hit another person. He carried Miss Rudolph to the Red & White store nearby, returning to find that there was another body - that of Mrs. Blades, who was dead. It was established later that Miss Rudolph had fallen toward the center of the road, while Mrs. Blades had been hurled to the left.

That witnesses, who were called into the courtroom one by one, corroborated Anderson's testimony in every detail, also swearing to the fact that he was not intoxicated. Those personally acquainted with the young man stated that they had always found him to be a safe driver, Sheriff C.T. House and Patrolman L. M. Kenedy, testified that Anderson's report of the accident was entirely in order, and that their findings at the scene tallied with those given in the other testimonials.

Also, they testified, he had never been reported on a reckless or drunken driving charge, to the best of their knowledge.

Witnesses called at the hearing were: Howard Masters, Dr. F.G. LeFor, Matt Jacobson, Mrs. Henry Wiidanen, Kenneth Marquiss, Ruth Wiidanen, Eddie Walman, Sheriff C.R. House, Patrolman L.M. Kenedy, and L.W. Cooper.

Reports on the condition of Miss Rudolph, the other victim of the accident, indicate that she has a good chance to recover. She was removed to the hospital at Yakima Friday, for X-ray and further treatment, examination revealing that her neck was broken. Her injuries were also in the nature of a scalp wound, several cuts above the ears, and several bruises on her lower limbs. She was placed in a cast and was moved to her home at Seattle Monday evening, Mrs. James Rudolph, the injured girl's mother, was called to her bedside and remained with her until she was resting comfortably, then came on to Goldendale Monday to gather together the young lady's belongings. She returned to Yakima that afternoon and accompanied her daughter to Seattle.

Dr. F.G. LeFor, county health officer, who examined the body of the dead woman, reported that she had suffered a possible fracture of the base of the skull, cuts above the left eye, several crushed ribs, and severe bruises from the knee up on her left side. He also reported that her neck was considerably swollen, indicating that it was broken.

Immediate survivors of the deceased woman are her daughters, Mrs. Claude Miller, of Goldendale, and Miss Hazel, student at Cheney Normal School; a small grandson; also her brother, County Commissioner H.H. Hartley, of Goldendale.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, at the Chapman Chapel, Rev. W.T. Jordan, of Maryhill, officiating. The remains were taken to Forest Grove Monday for the service and burial there.

VEACH, Dale B. -

Passed away at home on December 27, 2005, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Rosie Veach; the light of his life, his daughter, Vikki Mattis and her husband Steve; granddaughter, McKall Mattis; a grandson, Jaeger Mattis; his beloved sisters-in-law: Mary

Hill and Annette Saccomanno and her husband, Mario; brother, Norman Veach; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Dale was born in Lewiston, ID on January 1, 1929, and moved to Spokane, WA when he was about ten years old. He attended Audubon Grade School, Haver-male Junior High School, Rogers High School and Eastern Washington University. Dale played basketball as a sophomore on the Rogers team that first won the City Basketball Championship. He was also selected that year to the All City Basketball Team. He then went to Eastern Washington on a basketball scholarship and played at Eastern until a knee injury ended his college basketball career. After graduating from Eastern, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1955 as a Captain and went into the insurance business in Spokane. Dale was a chartered life underwriter and during his insurance career he occasionally taught insurance classes at Gonzaga University. He was a member of the Downtown Exchange Club, serving one year as president. Dale was an insurance broker until his retirement in 1997 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. After retirement Dale and Rosie took many trips to Boise to visit the grandchildren and spent two months in the winter in Palm Springs, CA. Dale had many hobbies during his lifetime. One of his favorites was fly fishing. He took many fly fishing trips with friends to

Alaska, Canada, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. He was president of the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club in 1976, and was named Fly Fisherman of the Year in 1978. Dale was also an avid golfer. In 1984 Dale and Rosie bought a condominium on the second fairway at Twin Lakes Village Golf Course. They would spend many summers at Twin Lakes and commute to work in Spokane. Dale was also a supporter of WSU's athletic program. Dale and Rosie had season football tickets for over 25 years for Cougar football. They traveled to many "away games," including bowl games in San Antonio, El Paso, Tucson, and twice to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA in 1998 and 2003. Dale also enjoyed playing bridge with friends and having "coffee" with his coffee group downtown. What he enjoyed absolutely the most was making trips to Boise,

Idaho to spend time with his grandchildren and watching them play soccer, basket ball and baseball. Visitation will be Thursday, December 29 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, December 30, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 330 E. Boone. Entombment will be private at Holy Cross Cemetery.
