ORAL HISTORY by LLOYD CHAPMAN - 23 Febuary, 1971.

Robert R. Chapman came from Sidney, Iowa with his parents Mr. & Mrs. David D. Chapman in 1875. They settled on the South Fork of the Walla Walla River, 7 miles from Milton, on the place now owned by Dr. Jack Woodhall, known as the Snow Storm House. His father raised horses.

They lived there until 1888 when Robert's father was struck in the chest and killed by a horse, while he was putting out salt. His mother and family later moved to Milton, where Robert met and married Eva Gordon in 1893, and they lived in Milton where their first two children were born; Lloyd and Earl.

After a few years they moved up the Walla Walla Rriver buying some land near the Forks of the river, on the South Fork, where they built a house, which is still standing; now owned by Burris Elliott. Their daughter, Iola, was born there in 1908. After a few years they bought a place about 3 miles farther up the South Fork, where he spent the rest of his life. Robert saw many changes on the river in his lifetime. In his days he could go out and watch a mess of trout in a few minutes and in the spring the river would be alive with Salmon. Now most of our fish is planted and hardly ever see a Salmon. He saw two power plants built on the river; one by the P.P.& L.CO., which he helped to build; and contracted and built the City Power pipe line from Milton Intake to Power Plant where the Dorion Park is now being built.

Their children, Lloyd, Earl, and Iola are all still living on the river.

Prominent Fruit Grower, 76, Dies

MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore.-- Robert R Chapman died Saturday night at his home on the south fork of the Walla Walla river where he had lived since 1875. He was born April 23, 1874, and came across the plains in an open wagon with his family when he was one year old.

Chapman was a prominent fruit grower in the valley and was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Christian church.

He is survived by his wife, Evelina; sons, Earl and Lloyd of Milton-Freewater; a daughter, Mrs. Don Harsch of Milton-Freewater; sister, Mrs L Chapman of Portland; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 28 at the Christian church with the Rev Russell Myers officiating, assisted by the Rev Harry Baird of Walla Walla, Interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
