Dear Mr. Dupuis:
For the past 12 years I have done extensive research on our DUPUIS lineage, for eventual publication. Since my great grand-mother, Hermine Dupuis, was a sister of your father Nicolas Joseph Dupuis, I am respectfully turning to you for whatever ancestral data you might care to share with me.
You will, I believe, be interested to know that I have established our Dupuis line, step by step, back to the pioneer immigrant ancestor who came from France to Canada in 1687. His name was Louis Dupuis (called "the parisian") who was born in 1658 in St. Suipice parish of Paris, France. Louis married on the 18th of January, 1688, Miss Marie Barbe Dubeau, in Quebec City, Q. P., Canada.
Your paternal grand-mother was, as you know, Julienne Modeste Demers (who married your grand-father Nicholas Dupuis on 6 February, 1838 in Napierville, Q. P., Canada). I have also traced our DEMERS ancestry in an unbroken line, with full documentary evidence, back to the immigrant Canadian colonist, Andre Demers. Andre was born in 1631 at St. Jacques of Dieppe, France. He married on the 7 January, 1654, Marie Chefdeville in Montreal, Canada.
I would deeply appreciate your expert assistance in preserving an accurate record of your own branch of the family, as a tribute to the memory of our forebears. Therefore I am enclosing a Dupuis family questionnaire and a stamped, self-addressed envelope for your convenience in replying.
I would particularly welcome the names of all your brothers and sisters in their order of birth; their birthdates (including your own); and the names of the persons each one married. It would also be especially nice to have the death date and place of death (county and state) of your father, Nicolas Joseph; and of your mother, Louise LaReine Gagnon. The book Mantle of Elias by Nichols, pub. 1941 in Portland, states that your maternal grand-father, Francois (Fas) Gagnon died in Calif. between 1849-52, during the gold-rush. His widow (your grand-mother) born Angelique Marcellais, later married Edward Bellanger, 11 Oct. 1852.
I descend through Hermine Dupuis' son, the late Edward William Suiste of Pendleton, Ore. My husband Loren and I have lived for the past 27 years in Baton Rouge, La., where he is professor of music here at the State University.
Please know that I shall be happy to share with you, or anyone interested, the tremendous amount of ancestral data I have carefully compiled. I look forward with pleasure to hearing from you; and send every good wish for your health and happiness. With much gratitude, I am
Cordially yours,
Doris Reimann Davidson
(Mrs. Loren D. Davidson)

JULIUS A. L. Suiste -- It is with pleasure that we accord this memorial to the prominent and talented gentleman whose name is at the head of this article, whose active Christian life has been a potent influence for good not only in this county but throughout the entire Pacific coast as well as many other portions of the globe. His was a masterful mind, combined with lofty moral integrity and a noble purpose to lift up and assist humanity, which purpose he faithfully carried out in many ways during his varied career of worthy activity.
His native place was Paris, France, and the date of his birth September, 1830. At fourteen years of age he started to travel and visited many portions of the globe, constantly studying the customs and languages of the people, until about the middle of the century, when he settled at Vancouver, Washington. Here he was occupied in teaching, especially among the Indians, and also with attending to the duties of justice of the peace, to which office he had been elected, and practicing law. In those primitive days he was arbitrator, advisor and instructor to the natives and also to the whites, who soon recognized and respected his ability and uprightness. After fifteen years here he went to California, teaching among the Indians, and in 1885 came to Umatilla county, locating near Vinson post office, of which office he was the incumbent for a number of terms. His brightness is manifested as a linguist, when we mention that he could speak, read and write seven different languages, besides many inferior Indian tongues. He could also speak fluently the language of the natives of the Sandwich Islands.
He was married, at Vancouver, Washington, in 1860, to Miss Hermine Depuis, a native of Canada. To them have been born the folowing children: Albert, Joseph, Charley, Edward, Thresa, Maria and Nellie, deceased. He was well known and respected by all, and has left behind that riches of all legacies, the bright example of a faithful, kind, Christian life. He died at the residence of his youngest son, near Pendleton, on February 18, 1901, and was buried at Pendleton.

I was just looking at papers written by my Aunt about Joseph Blanchet. He married Hermine Demers Dupuis Suiste after my great grandfather Julius Ange Leon Suiste divorced. He was my grandfather's stepfather. I have photos etc. of Hermine, Joseph and Julius. Just read where after Hermine died from childbirth Joseph remarried a woman who tried to poison him. Are you familiar with that story? I live near Hermine's gravesite and have photos of it if you are interested. There are more stories and history I plan on getting together to do my book. Don't have who Joseph Blanchet's parents were but think I can find out for you. Will let you know. Marjorie

ILLIAM HOLT BREWSTER:An Illustrated History of the State of Washington, by Rev. H.K. Hines, D.D., The Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, IL., 1893, pages 432-433
WILLIAM HOLT BREWSTER, one of the representative and progressive business men of Vancouver, was born in England in 1844, a son of John and Hannah (Holt) Brewster, the former a native of Ireland, and the latter of England. William, the third of six children, left school at the age of twelve years, and accompanied his father to Australia, where the latter died in 1858. Mr. Brewster then returned to the land of his birth, but two years later came to America, becoming an American citizen within twenty-four hours after landing. He enlisted in Company M, Thirteenth New York Cavalry, for the late war, and served until 1865. Although Mr. Brewster was not a direct participant in any of the noted battles, he is none the less entitled to even greater distinction. His command was always on scouting duty, as the advance guard of Sheridan's Army of the Potomac, and all old soldiers will know the danger of that branch of service, and few have a relish for the constant moving and hardships connected with scouting, or, in other words, spying upon the movements of the enemy. While at Loudoun Valley, Virginia, Mr. Brewster was captured, but by taking desperate chances made his escape to the Federal lines, thereby, if not saving his life, at least avoiding the dreaded Libby Prison. After the close of the struggle he was employed as clerk for Lee, Bliss & Co., New York city, but six months later went to St. Louis, Missouri, and joined the Third United States Cavalry. Having a knowledge of pharmacy, which he had made a special study some years before, he was enlisted as a Steward, serving on the frontier three years. After returning to St. Louis he became a commercial traveler, next went to San Francisco, California; later engaged as clerk in a dry-goods store in Portland, Oregon, and at the breaking out of the Indian war we find him at the front, and later in charge of the post at Colville. Mr. Brewster was discharged in 1879, and for the following twelve months was employed as clerk for Captain Ainsworth, of the O.S.M. Company. In 1880 he established his present business, which is one of the largest general merchandise houses in Southwestern Washington. His stock consists of choice and fresh fruit, groceries, and delicacies of all kinds. He also carries a fine stock of hardware. Mr. Brewster was elected to the City Council in 1891, and has always taken an active interest in the general development of the city and county. Socially, he is Post Commander of the G.A.R., Ellsworth Post, No. 2, and is a member of the A.O.U.W., K. of P., and the I.O.O.F., having passed all the chairs in the last two orders. Our subject was married at Vancouver, Washington, February 25, 1879, to Lucy L. Dupuis, and they have two children, Robert N. and William H. Mrs. Brewster had five children by a former marriage.

John Charles Burgy I
Of French descent, the Burgy’s came to the United States from Herrlisheim, Alsace Lorraine, France, where John Charles Burgy, his wife Mary Ann and their two oldest children were born. John was born on December 6, 1823, and was married at Herrlisheim ca. 1842/43 to Mary Ann Steffen who was born on January 16, 1826.
The family immigrated to the United States aboard the ship Susan in 1851, arriving at New Orleans, Louisiana. Their third child, Joseph Hubert, was born at sea on November 2, 1851, three days from their destination. In 1852 they joined the westward movement and on October 28, 1854, settled on a Donation Land Claim of 320 acres in Clark County next to the claims of John Bird and Peter Bersch. Although John was a carpenter by trade he also engaged in farming. He did not fulfill the requirements to receive the patent and the claim was later cancelled by the Land Office.
In 1855 the increasing hostilities involving the Indians developed into all out war and every able bodied man was recruited for defense of the settlers. The women and children were sent to the block house at Ft. Orchard for protection. John Burgy and a number of his neighbors joined Company "A" of the First Washington Territory Regiment of Mounted Rifles under the leadership of Captain William Strong. Her served for 63 days and later served with Captain Hamilton J.G. Maxon’s Company, Second Regiment of Washington Mounted Rifles. Some years later he received a pension from the State of Oregon for his Indian War service.
At the beginning of the Civil War, on December 20, 1861, John enlisted with Company "C", First Oregon Cavalry at Fort Vancouver. He served until April 19, 1865 when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He is described in the military records as: 5’10" tall, fair complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes. John received a Relief Bond from the State of Oregon in the amount of $180. The state gave its soldiers $5 per month over and above the pay of regular army troops to offset the depreciated treasury notes with which they were paid.
After moving to Barberton, the Burgy children were students at St. John’s Catholic School. Their son Joseph was a master pilot on the Columbia River for forty-seven years, working aboard the Caliope, Traveler Ione, Undine and numerous other ships. He also towed sailing ships for the O. R. & N.
John passed away on October 31, 1901 and was buried in the St. James Catholic Cemetery at Vancouver. Although Mary Ann had been ailing slightly for some time, her sudden death was a great shock. She had retired at her usual hour with no indication of the on coming attack and when her daughter went to her room to look in on her. She found her quite ill and within a half hour she expired. Mary Ann died on April 1, 1905 and was buried beside her husband at St. James Catholic Cemetery.

LOWELL and MINNIE ROGERS 1871
Lowell Lester Rogers, the founder of the Rogers Canning Company was born in Silverton, Oregon in 1869. Rogers attended school in Weston. His father owned a farm near Weston and at one time had worked as a miner. Because of the death of his fahter when he was only ten years old, Lowell was educated by his mother along with the rest of the children.
In 1893 Rogers married Minnie M Dupuis. The young couple moved to a famr near Adams, which his mother had paid $3,000 for 160 acres of land.
The canning company was started in 1935. Rogers was president of the company until his death in July 4, 1954.
Minnie Dupuis Rogers was born in 1873 in Vancouver, Washington to Catherine and John Dupuis. Her father was a saddle maker and owned a harness and stagecoach shop at Weston. Stage coaches were used between Pendleton and Walla Walla before railroads were built in the area. Her father's shop was destroyed by a fire in Weston. Added to the bad luck, her father suffered a stroke.
To support the family, her mother ran a furniture and undertaking parlor. Minnie, the oldest child of eight, attended schools in Weston, later passing a teacher's test of the Oregon State Board of Education. She was the youngest person at the time to teach school in Oregon at the age of 16.
She died in 1950.

AROLD REED BARNETT:Harold Barnett
Harold Barnett, president of Rogers Walla Walla Inc. and a pioneer in the Blue Mountain region pea farming and processing industries, died in a Pendleotn hospital last night, just five days before his 80th birthday. He had been in the hospital several weeks.
barnett, whose home was in Pendleton, had headed Rogers Walla Walla since the Rogers and Walla Walla canning companies merged in 1961. He was a founding director of the Rogers firm in 1934, first known as the P.J. Burk Co., and become its president after the death in 1954 of L.L. Rogers his father-in-law.
Barnett was an active, large scale farmer in Umatilla County in addition to his prominent role for nearly four decades in the food processing industry. His farming experience extended from the mule era in Walla Walla and Franklin counties in Washington to personal experimental work in his Umatilla County farm shops toward development of a pea combine. He recalled nostalgically that he drove one of the first tractors on a farm in the Washtucna-Kahlotus vicinity as a young man.
He was recognized as a leader in experimenting with new farm machinery ideas. He also was credited with being one of the first two farmers to raise peas in Umatilla County in 1933 and the first cannery came at Athena a year later. The Rogers Company expanded with another plant's construction at Milton-Freewater in 1935.
Barnett was born Nov 12, 1893, at colton, Wash., south of Pullman. The family later farmed in Walla Walla County. His mother was Anna Green Barnett, and the farm of her family side was at the present site of Green Park School here.
Barnett attended school here and was a football player in his Walla Walla High School years. The main family farming operations were on Dry Creek. Known at the Garver farm for many years.
Barnett is survived by a brother, Lindon, in Walla Walla; a daughter, Mrs Quenton (Joan) Rugg of Athena, and two granddaughters. His wife died eight years ago.
Barnett was a long-time member of the Pendleton School board, served on the Oregon State Fair Board, and was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Presbyterian Church in Pendleton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Turesday at Folsoms' chapel in Pendleton.

HILIP REMILLARD:Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1967 > September > 10 Pg 10
Athena Mayor Son of Pioneer of This Area
ATHENA -- Mayor Philip Remillard was born at old Frenchtown (subject of these pages Aug 27) to Philip and Leona (Bergevin) Remillard in 1901.
"Father was the first Remillard in the Walla Walla Valley" the mayor says " He came here from Ontario as a young man.:
All of Mayor Remillard's schooling was obtained in Walla Walla County Schools. First was at the old St Vincent Academy and the La Salle School for Boys. He attended Prescott High School but didn't finish as he enetered farming with his father in that area instead of completing school.
But, then during those World War I days, more youngsters probably went into jobs of one kind or another than went to higher schooling, the mayor opined.
Remillard moved to Yakima and was there until 1928 with his parents. Here he was a mechanic and auto parts man. In 1928 the family moved to Athena where the father and son partnership again came into being on a farming venture for some 10 years.
Braden Store
"Clarence Braden (of Walla Walla) opened a branch store here in Athena and I went to work for him.: said Remillard. After a year he became manager and served in that capacity for 15 years.
"Then I sort of free-lanced a little in machinery," he said, 'buying and selling around the area."
The last three years before he decided to retire (a year ago) he was bookkeeper and office manager for the A & A Elevator Co.
In 1934, Mayor Remillard was married to the former Francis Dupuis of Adams. The couple has twin daughters, now 21.
Remillard was active in the Lions Club when it was formed here and is a member of the Athena Chamber of Commerce and the Umatilla County Roads Advisory Committee.
Long a Hunter
Big game huntin in the Blue Mountains has been a pursuit of many years for Remillard. . . "never miss a season.: His favorite area has been from Tollgate to the Washington State line. A custom (where possible of course) of killing his deer or elk at a point above him earned for him the nick'name of "Shot-em-down-the-hill.:
"The late herb Clark gave me that name." said Remillard.
Now at 66, Remillard admits the 1966 season might have been his last. "It comes a bit hard now," he says.
He might be abanding big game hunting but not some other aspects of outdoor living. now owning a pleasure boat, Remillard finds many occasions to get out on the Snake, Columbia or other lakes in the region for steelhead and salmon fishing.
The steelheading are out of the Umatilla Boat Marina is a favorite spot of his and he has also been casting eyes up toward the Grande Ronde and Renaha Rivers around Troy.
Elected in 1962
Remillard was elected mayor the first time in 1962 and has since been re-elected in 1964 and 1066. He succeeded Cal Hanlon who had been mayor for many years here. Remillard had served two terms on the council before being named mayor.
Councilmen include: Charles Simpson (he is also superintendent of schools here), Don Weber, melvin Schmidtgall, A. J. Wernsing and Mrs. Lyle Hinkins. Recorder is C.B. Dugger; Dean Pinkerton is city treasurer and George Miller is marshal and maintenance man for the city.
