=============================
OBIT - January 1943 Joe E. (Dad) Kelly Passes - Early Day Stockraiser, Wild Horse Wrangler, Dies at Age of 90 Years.
Joseph E. (Dad) Kelly of Stateline, a stockraiser nearly all his life who came to Walla Walla county in 1878, died Saturday in a local hospital at the age of 90 years.
He had just recently passed his birthday, as he was born January 14, 1853, at Merrickville, Ont. Canada. Except for the first nine years of his life and last 10 or 11 years of his life and the first 10 or 11 years, his life has been given over to stockraising.
Leaving Canada for Kansas in 1869, he became a cattle dealer and cowboy and had two years of thrilling, grinding hardships herding over the vast distances from all parts of Texas to railheads in Kansas. In 1871 he moved to California and spent most of several years breaking wild horses before he came in 1878 to Jim Ford's island in the Snake river, now known as Sheffler station, and founded a ranch with the 2-K brand.
When the Republic gold rush started he went there in 1897 and operated a stage and freight outfit between Republic and Grand Rapids, B.C. Driving with a jerk line became one of his accomplishments, as was evidenced in that early day on the streets of Walla Walla when he would handle 20 mules with the same ease and certainty an ordinary horseman excercises in driving a four-horse hitch.
In 1901 he located near Lowden where he followed farming and stock raising until 1929 when he retired.
Shortly after coming to Walla Walla county he married Nellie Adkins, in 1863 and they raised a large family. Several members have died and survivors that are living; Roy and James Kelly of Lowden, Harlind Kelly of Prescott; two daughters, Mrs Ben Hector of Eureka and Mrs. Will Crumbak of Lowden; a brother, John H. Kelly of Walla Walla; two brothers-in-law , Dell Adkins of Walla Walla and Harley Adkins of Colville, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Kelly was a member of the I.O.O.F. and Knights of Pythias Lodges.
Funeral services have been arranged for 11 am Tuesday from a local funeral home with the Rev. George Scofield officiating and interment in the I.O.O.F. plot of Mtn. View Cemetery.
