"History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps & Dent Counties, Missouri, from Earliest Times to the Present" Published by Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889.

John W. Kyle. Among the prominent men of Texas County, MO., who embarked on the sea of life with little or no capital, but who are now considered among the wealthy citizens of the county, may be mentioned Mr. Kyle, who was born in Westmoreland County, Penn., July 24, 1837, his parents being Samuel and Diana (Kelley) Kyle, who were natives of Pennsylvania, and there lived and died, the father's death occuring at the age of fifty-two years, during the cholera epidemic, and the mother's in 1872, when seventy-three years of age. They were members of the Missionary Baptist Church, and the father was a Whig in politics, and a shoemaker by trade, and followed this occupation until a few years before his death, when he turned his attention to farming.

John W. Kyle is the third of their six children, and after his father's death made his home with his mother until nearly eighteen years of age, when he was apprenticed to a blacksmith, and served three years for $100. At the end of this time he entered the employ of the man for whom he had been working, receiving for his services $3 per day. He then worked for some time in Pittsburg, Penn., but in July, 1861, he enlisted in Company F, of the Twelfth Pennsylvania Reserve Corps, serving with credit nineteen months, participating in all the battles in which the Army of the Potomac took part. At the second battle of Bull Run he received a very severe wound in the head from a bursting shell, which confined him to the hospital for over two months, after which he was honorably discharged. Shortly after he went to Rockford, Ill., and then came to Rolla, MO., and worked in the Government shops for nearly three years. In 1866 he came to Texas County, MO., and in 1877 put up a shop in Houston, where he worked at his trade for fourteen years, since which time he has been engaged in farming and stock trading, his efforts in this line meeting with good success. July 3, 1864, his union with Miss D. L. Barber was consummated. She was born in North Carolina, a daughter of T. Y. Barber, and she and Mr. Kyle became the parents of ten children: Lilie May, Mary J., James W., Charles A., John H., Elizabeth M., Caroline L., Ethel C., Cecily and Florence K. Mrs. Kyle is a member of the Christian Church, and Mr. Kyle is a Mason, and a Republican in politics.

[Since the above was written Mr. Kyle has been the victim of a sad and fatal accident, one which has thrown gloom upon the community, and occasioned a loss sincerely felt. On February 14, Mr. Kyle left his home, some two miles south of Houston, to attend to some business in town. While returning he fell from his horse, striking upon his head, and causing almost instant death. The wound which he received during the war had caused at times dizziness and unconciousness, and it is supposed the fall occurred during one of these spells. He was buried by the Houston Masonic Lodge, of which he had been an honored member.]

Obituaries for the week of June 21 to June 25

Published: June 25, 2004

Barbara Sturgill

Barbara Ann Sturgill, 82, of Baker City, died June 20, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 2130 Second St. The Rev. Dick Toll of Milwaukie will officiate. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at the church.

Visitations will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave.

Barbara was born to L.D. and Neva Chidsey Clabough on Aug. 12, 1921, at Heppner. She moved with her mother, Neva, and her sister, Dorothy, to Baker City in 1927 when she was 6 years old. She has been a continuous resident of Baker County until her death. She was assimilated into the McCord pioneering family legacy when her mother married Robert McCord in 1932.

Her teen-age years were marked with her characteristic qualities of independence, strong will, exuberance, compassion and tremendous energy. She was active in sports, school activities and summer fun. She often championed the underdog and social misfit, and often exhibited a streak of roguish behavior in the form of prankish, but harmless, practical jokes.

Her headlong charge into life was slowed a bit when, at age 19, she was stricken with the dreaded crippling poliomyelitis. The disease left all her muscles paralyzed from the waist down.

After two years of almost constant hospitalization, surgeries and treatment in Portland, she was released, with her physician's dire predictions she would never walk again, would never be able to bear children and would, in effect, be restricted to a comparatively sedentary lifestyle.

Through sheer grit and determination, Barbara defied all the odds. With the aid of leg braces, laced corseting of her upper body, and a cane for balance, she did learn to "walk" again, swinging her legs by using her upper body muscles. Eventually over the years, she was forced to use two canes, then crutches and finally a wheelchair and electric cart. For the las year and a half she was confined to bed, first at home, then at the St. Elizabeth Health Care Center where she finished out her days.

She married returned World War II Navy veteran Kenneth W. Sturgill on April 21, 1946, in Baker City. She subsequently bore and nurtured two sons, often relying on her far-reaching cane or well- trained dog, Fawn, to retrieve active little boys when they were sure they had outfoxed their mother.

She was an active farm wife, during the first year of marriage sometimes cooking for as many as 16 hay hands, all before electricity or indoor plumbing were installed.

Life became a little more convenient when the family moved into a modest, electrically wired and plumbed house in Baker City in 1952. More convenient, maybe, but only encouraging her to become more involved in family, neighborhood and community affairs.

She actively supported the World War II effort by serving as a volunteer in the local United Service Organizations. She communicated regularly with local servicemen abroad, keeping them apprised of happenings on the home front.

She worked as a secretary to the appeals panel of the local Draft Board. She was an active and creative Cub Scout den mother and helped organize and support PTA, Little League and Babe Ruth.

She was an advocate and strong supporter of all sports and school extracurricular activities. She was a tireless and dedicated 4-H worker in numerous ways, for both her own sons and a multitude of other participants. She either organized or solicited funds for yearly fund-raisers of the National Polio Foundation, Cancer Society and American Heart Association.

She served as a Sunday school teacher and in other positions in her church, was a longtime working member of the popular Me 'N' You dinner/dance club and was active in Lady Elks and CattleWomen for many years.

She unselfishly served as "physician," "counselor," and "second mother" to many, feeling free to chip in with some homespun advice, whether solicited or not, but fondly recalled and appreciated in the recipient's later years.

In addition to nurturing her own family, she often baby-sat the children of friends and neighbors, with or without pay. Periodically, she worked outside the home for KBKR radio station, Leo Adler Magazine Distributors and Realtor Lyle Laeger.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Kenneth W. Sturgill; sons, Blair, and his wife, Carolyn, of Roseburg and Robert and his wife, Peggy, of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters and their husbands, Dorothy, and Melvin Durgan of Baker City, Shirley and Robert Clemens of Salem, and Sharon and Joe Hindman of Pullman, Wash.; a brother, Oliver McCord, and his wife, Kay, of Cheney, Wash.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church or to the charity of one's choice through Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

Kenneth William Sturgill

Age at Death: 86

Birth Date: 4 Apr 1919

Death Date: 3 Sep 2005

Newspaper Title: Baker City Herald

Newspaper Location: Baker City, OR, US

Obituary Publication Date: 10 Sep 2005

Kenneth Sturgill

Kenneth William Sturgill, 86, a lifetime Baker County resident, died Sept. 3, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 2120 Second St. Deacon Connie Boone will officiate. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at the family home.

Visitations will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave.

Kenny was born on April 4, 1919, to Cecil and Jessie Sturgill at the old St. Elizabeth Hospital in Baker City. He was educated in the 5J school system, and was a 1937 Baker High School graduate. He served four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Harris, completing 13 invasions in the South Pacific during World War II.

A descendant of a wagon train pioneer family that settled in Baker County in 1868, Kenny was steeped in the philosophical spirit of "can do, make it do, do it over, or do without." Kenny spent his entire life just "doing it" for his family, his friends, his community and his country.

After returning home from the Navy, Kenny married Barbara Clabough. They raised two sons in Baker County.

The pioneering heritage of the Sturgill family served Kenny and Barbara well as they began their married life on the family farm in a three-room house with no electricity, no telephone and no indoor plumbing — just a well-worn path to an outside hand pump, and another to the outhouse. Starting at an early age, they instilled in their two sons the same pioneering "can-do" spirit and neighborly helpfulness.

When the boys were still quite young, Kenny took a job with Production Credit Association, where he worked for 28 years, and the family moved into a somewhat more modern house on the corner of Chestnut Street and Valley Avenue.

Later, in order to have room to accommodate 4-H animals, they moved to Cedar Street, which became the family home as long as he and Barbara were able to care for themselves. Since Barbara's death in June of 2004, Kenny had been living in elder care centers, most recently Meadowbrook Place.

Kenny was an active member in many aspects of the Baker County community, including the Baker County and Oregon Cattlemen's Association, which honored him in 1964 as Baker County Father of the Year and Oregon Father of the Year.

The honor was due in large part to his dedicated service in the Baker County 4-H and FFA programs, in which both his sons were involved for as many years as they were eligible. He willingly arose each day at 5 a.m. to drive his sons to the outskirts of town where their animals were kept to help feed, water and work them. He then returned home for breakfast before heading off to work.

He willingly spent endless Saturdays and several evenings a month instructing, coaching and mentoring dozens of youth, including his sons in raising show animals. His dedication was clearly evident in his scheduling vacations around 4-H Show and Sale Week so he could be there from dawn to all hours to lend a supportive hand and to do every chore connected with the annual Baker County event.

During his sons' youth, there wasn't a sports or extracurricular activity in which the boys were involved that Kenny, his wife, Barbara, his parents Grandpa and Grandma Sturgill, and his sister, Cecille, were not front and center to cheer and encourage all the youth to do their best.

Being involved in his sons' lives was very important to Kenny. He served as a dedicated and innovative Cub Scout master and was an active member of the PTA, where he was known to be a willing worker at special activities. He helped with the Youth Hunter Safety program and taught his sons how to handle a gun properly and then took them pheasant hunting on the family farms.

For many years, after spending the day at his regular job, Kenny would faithfully attend to the various night janitorial jobs he performed to supplement the family income. An important side bonus to these night jobs was having one or both boys accompany him, thereby teaching them honest work ethic and how to earn and manage money.

Kenny also served in the community of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church where he was a teacher, Sunday School superintendent and a lay reader. He served as the treasurer of the vestry for more than 20 years.

After his sons were grown and away from home, Kenny became involved in the Elks Lodge, the Lions Club and other organizations where he willingly assisted in any area where he was needed. He also was active in the Me n' You Dinner/Dance Club and his expertise in handling livestock was put to use in establishing the petting zoo at the Baker County Miners Jubilee.

Kenny's greatest contributions to people in Baker County might best be described as that of selfless humanitarian. He was a dedicated helpmate and caregiver to his wife, Barbara, and he was always there to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors. He was a great role model to his own sons, numerous other youth, friends and neighbors. He was truly an inspiration to all who knew him.

Kenny was selected as Baker County Unlimited 2002 Legacy Man of the Year.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his parents, Cecil and Jessie Sturgill; and his sisters, Cecille Sturgill and Lettie Higgins.

Survivors include his two sons, R. Blair and his wife, Carolyn, and Robert W. and his wife, Peggy; grandchildren, Kirsten Sturgill Murphy, and her husband, Brian Murphy, Kathy Sturgill Carter and her husband, Sam Carter, Robert Sturgill Jr. and his wife, Debbie, Jenny Sturgill, Brett Sturgill and his wife, Hailey, Christopher Sturgill and his wife, Kira, and Michael Sturgill and his wife, Danielle; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth Christine, Madison and Makaila; a sister, Fran Chaves; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice through Gray's West & Co., P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

Maxine Roberts, 95

Pioneer Alaskan and longtime Anchorage resident Maxine Roberts, 95, died Jan. 22, 2005, at the Anchorage Pioneers' Home of natural causes.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 616 W. 10th Ave.

Mrs. Roberts was born Nov. 4, 1909, in Prairie City, Ore., to Anna and Henry Beckius.

After graduating from nursing school, she accepted a position at Seward Methodist Hospital and came to Alaska on the S.S. Yukon in spring 1935. She immediately began caring for quarantined colonist children who had come down with the measles.

She married Seward dentist A.R. Roberts in 1936 and lived in Kodiak until 1942. They lived in Anchorage in the same house on Barrow Street for 50 years.

Mrs. Roberts took great joy in gardening and serving her own vegetables, pies and preserves. Her raspberry bushes were shared with many friends, who grew them elsewhere.

Her family wrote: "Maxine's faith in Jesus Christ was very strong. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 60 years and was active in the Lillie Berry Circle.

"Other organizations she joined were the League of Women Voters, Anchorage Pioneers of Alaska, World War I Ladies' Auxiliary of Jack Henry Post 1, and FISH.

"Maxine was especially hospitable to those who (enjoyed) a home-cooked meal. She invited young military couples, old bachelors and people coming in from the villages. She was definitely the nurturing type, and she watched out for the underdog. She loved Red Foley's song, 'If I Can Help Somebody.'

"She was well-known for her love of animals and she had many throughout her life, especially a black Lab named Beauty."

Notes for CHRISTOPHER EDWARD JAY:

The following Christmas Letter was given to the museum to be added to this site by Chris Jay with his permission.

Christmas Letter 2005

2005 was a year of transition for this family, and we arrive at the end of it happy to be with one another for the holidays. We began with a goodbye to our beloved aunt, Maxine Roberts who died in January.

Margie and Chris attended the Inaugural festivities of Thomas Hochstettler as the new president of Lewis and Clark College. It was beautiful March weekend in Portland, and brought to a full circle Chris’s role as part of the presidential search committee for Lewis and Clark College.

Hope graduated in May from the University of Southern California, she finished her career at USC in three and a half years. Margie’s brother Quincy* hosted a lovely and unforgettable evening dinner at his home in Bel Air. Hope began work with Capital Guardian Trust Company, the parent company of American Funds Group. She currently is with the institutional side of the business in their headquarters office in downtown Los Angeles.

Christopher was our next graduate, and his big day was on Margie’s birthday in June. After four years as Culver Military Academy cadet, he graduated as the coveted "four year man." He was Drum Major of the marching band, a big honor at Culver; and co-captain of the crew team as well. Graduation weekend at Culver is full of tradition and reunions and parties, and last over three days. It is quite the occasion. He is now near completion of his first term at Seattle University, and enjoying it very much.

Our oldest Po continues to work at the mortgage company Ditech at their Costa Mesa, California Center. He and very special friends came home for Thanksgiving, and wanted to have it here in Anchorage with snow and cold weather. Some memories are very strong for Alaska kids, no matter how old they are, or where they may eventually live and work.

Margie was honored with some other "pioneers" of aviation at a very special event in the fall in New York City. She was honored at a dinner sponsored by Northwest Airlines and the Black Flight Attendant Association of America for helping to break the color barrier for women and men of color in the industry. She and others invited there were typically the first black flight attendants hired by their perspective carriers. Alaska Airlines provided transportation and lodging for us, and also sent a delegation from the company too. It was a quite the honor, and recognition by her peers and former employer.

Chris will mark his 30th year at Merrill Lynch a few days before Christmas, and is very grateful to all of those he has known as clients, friends and coworkers during these three decades. The contact with so many splendid people has been a great gift.

We have lost some very close friends this past year to illness, some expected, and some completely by surprise. Our hearts have been saddened each time, but Christmas is the season for the birth of hope. We continue to believe in that thought, and pray that you do as well.
