From a 1917 obit for James W. Smith in a Milton Oregon paper: "The Civil War broke out when he was scarcely more than a boy, but as soon as he was old enough he entered the Union Army and served for three years, until the end of the conflict. He was with Company F,124th Illinois infantry..."
