HERMISTON — Marion "Bud" Clifton Leathers passed away on Oct. 9, 2006 in Hermiston. Bud was born in Ione, Oregon on May 22, 1926, to Lloyd and Rose Leathers. He joined two older brothers, Lloyd Alonzo and Jack Stevens Leathers.
The early years of his life were spent in Morrow and Grant Counties. Following the death of an older brother, he and his brother Jack moved into the home of his grandmother Dillie Leathers, who was probably the most important person in his younger life. He also formed close attachments with aunts and uncles while there. He attended school in Monument and as a young man, he worked on his uncles' ranches and for neighboring ranchers. He also learned the art of shearing sheep from his father, brother Jack, and Uncle Arch.
In World War II he served his country as a member of the United States Army in the European Theater in Belgium and Germany. Following the war he worked as a truck driver.
On Nov. 1, 1951 he married Evelyn B. Robison Rice and to this union were born three children — Wesley Ervin Leathers and Lloyd Leslie Leathers and Cheryl Dean Leathers Christian.
Bud, as he was known to most of us, had a deep love for each member of his family. Especially precious to him were his grandchildren Keith, Jared, Jamie, Alexis, and Wesley James, all of whom lived nearby.
Bud spent 42 years in the Hermiston area. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 20 years before retiring. For the past 27 years, he was an active member of AA, sponsoring and mentoring a number of people. In doing this he formed treasured friendships.
Bud is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Evelyn Leathers, Hermiston; his children Wesley Leathers of Umatilla; Lloyd L. and Cindy Leathers of Umatilla and Cheryl D. & Rick Christian of Elgin; grandsons Keith and Christina Leathers, Hermiston; Jared Stilwill, Tri-Cities, Wash.; Wesley James Leathers, Umatilla; Rich Christian, Ontario; granddaughters Jamie Stilwill, Tri-Cities, Wash.; Alexis Leathers, Umatilla; Christine & Wilyam Sabri, Hermiston; April Christian, Goldendale, Wash.; sisters: Alita Henslee, Long Creek; Anita Griffith, Long Creek; nieces Janet Awe, Boring; Carolyn Chapman, Roseburg; Renee Miller, North Powder; Janel Hunt, Pilot Rock; Jennifer Senio, Nampa, Idaho; Suzanne Calzada, Anchorage, Alaska; Shannon Krummel, Union,; Roberta Kuhn, Portland; Mona Anderson, Elgin; nephews Rick Henslee Long Creek; Russel Henslee, Pendleton; and Jim Neal, Augusta, Maine. There are also a number of great nieces and nephews, and one surviving aunt, Grace Duncan, Portland.
Preceding him in death were his father Lloyd L. Leathers and mother Rose E. LaMon; grandfather Hollie Leathers; grandmother Dillie Leathers; brothers Jack Leathers; Lloyd Alonzo Leathers (died in early childhood); and Earl James Leathers (died in infancy).
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Hermiston. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Long Creek Cemetery, Long Creek.
