In reading a letter received by Hiram Shangle in 1951 from a cousin Kermit, it mentions that his older brother Homer (Eugene) married Lizzie (Elizabeth), daughter of John Shangle, his uncle. Also listed were brothers of his father Nelson and Stephen. ----
Years ago I visited some of the Shangle group in New York and preached one time while up there. I had a great time. My oldest brother, Homer, married years before this to Lizzie Shangle, daughter of Uncle John Shangle. Both dead now. No children. Nelson Shangle and Stephen Shangle were all brothers of my father, all of them living in the state of New York.

Description:
The following letter received today by Rev. J.D. Crooks from Rev. H.S. Shangle of the Corbin Park M.E. church, south, at Spokane, was given to The Star-Mirror today:
Spokane, Aug. 19. --Rev. J.D. Crooks, Moscow, Ida., Dear Brother Crooks:
At the regular meeting of the ministerial association of this city this morning, I was instructed to express to you the sincere sympathy and sorrow of the association in this hour of your great misfortune. They wish you to know that they do not believe you guilty of the awful crime of which you are now accused, and to assure you that we do not forget you in our prayers. We trust that the evidence at the trial will clear up the whole mystery and show your innocence.
Brother Crooks, if I can be of any service to you, please remember that I shall be only too glad to do it. Let me know if in any way I can be of benefit. You do not know how many times we have expressed our deep sorrow at your situation, and how every day we remember you at a throne of grace. May God have mercy.
If you care to write me, I shall be glad to hear from you.
Your friend and brother, H.S. Shangle

In a letter dated February 13, 1951:
My dear Kermit - Your very interesting letter came last evening. It was a pleasant surprise. 1) Let me speak of cousin William King of Chicago. We visited him more than once. Norma and her mother were also exceedingly cordial and hospitable. Norma afterwards visited us in Oregon. Cousin presented us with a copy of his family tree which we appreciated very much, but unfortunately lost it in moving. We miss it a great deal, and want another, if we can get it. We have lost sight of them, and that for years past. 2) As to my father, let me say that he was born and reared in New Jersey. For some reason he went south when he was a young man. He never mentioned his father or mother in my hearing. He spke of going to college in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Afterwards he went to Virginia and married there. I was the third child of this marriage. I have never tried to trace my ancestors, I shall write today to your uncle and enclose a copy of my letter to him to you. 3) Yes, I wrote to Dr. Roy L. Smith, Publishing Agent of the Advocate, when I renewed my subscription never dreaming mt fe lines would ever be printed. That is what you saw in the paper. I have been a Methodist minister for more than 71 years, 61 of which have been in this N.W. country, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and West Montana but mostly in Oregon. I am now a superannuate member of the Oregon Conference. I had a severe stroke six years ago which has greatly disabled me, especially in my writing, making it necessary to do all my writing with my index finger on my left hand on this machine. Hence the mistakes that mar the page. I am real well now, but very frail and weak. My wife is fairly well and for 66 years we have had a happy life in the ministry. Have had several important pastorates, 25 years Dist. Supt. and 8 years Pres. of College. Up to last Sept. I have preached occasionally but likely no again possibly. We have five children, Bruce, the oldest, lives in Blythe, California, in the desert, but the finest farming country I have ever seen. In the mail yesterday with yours was one from him. He writes that his melons now need thinning. He has 900 acres this year in melons. They pland the seed in Dec. and first part of Jan. About 700 acres in lettuce, some 1200 or more head of cattle. They cut alfalfa hay three times a year. Paine, our next, is supt. of schools in Belling [Washington?] and the other son, Lovick, has his office in the Portland City Hall. Our two girls are married and live in Portland. 12 grand children and 14 great grand children. But "Nuff said". Several years ago I got an invitation from the Iowa Shangle tribe to attend a great gathering of the Shangle clan to a reunion there but could not attend. Have lost track of them since that time. But I must close. I have almost stopped writing because of my deficiency. Excuse blunders. Write again and tell us of your family. God bless all of the Tribe. I am glad some of them are Methodists, and ABOVE ALL ARE CHRISTIANS. Yours now and ever, H. S. Shangle
--------------
Hiram wrote a letter to Gilbert Shangle, dated February 13, 1951:
Portland, Oregon February 13, 1951
My dear cousin Gilbert,
You see I call you COUSIN, whether you are or not we are. Let me explain. Yesterday I received a fine letter from your nephew, Kermit. He gave me your address. My father's name was Jospeh Smith Shangle, born and reared in New Jersey, but went south when in his early manhood, and married in Virginia. I am a third child from that marriage, and have been a Methodist minister for nearly 72 years. Have lived in the N. W. since 1890. I never heard my father speak of his father and mother, and hence know but little of his people. If you can tell me anything of him or his family, please do so, and I will be glad. I have heard him speak of his three brothers, Nelson, John and Stephen. I went up for a short visit to some of them in 1883. My brother had married his first cousin, daughter of John Shangle, all dead now. They were living (some of them) at Five Corners. New York state. Please write me of my father and his father's family, if you know anything. If I live until next month (March 19, 1951) I shall be exactly 95 years old. My health is good and the doctors say I am good for the hundred years. Maybe so and maybe not. But my faith in Christ, my Lord and Saviour, is firmly fixed and my wife and I are not afraid to die. I trust this is true of you also. God bless you now and always. Kermit writes that you were about 75., not quite my age. Trusting that you can help me to know something of my ancestry and thanking you in advance for your pains I subscribe myself devoted yours. H. S. Shangle
-----------
In another letter, Hiram writes:
Portland, Oregon April 16, 1951
My dear cousin - Just now, I am having two of my booklets printed in one volume for some of my friends and relatives. The booklet will have to do with my boyhood and early manhood, and with some of my experiences as a minister in this northwestern country after 60 years. I think it will have some interest to you as well as to others whom I have known and loved. It will likely be last of May or even later before you will get yours. I would like for you to send me names and P.O. addresses of about five or six of my cousins in different parts of New York and New Jersey, on my father's side of the house. Those you think will have some interest in a far away relative now past his 95 birthday. No hurry about this at all. We shall go to the southern part of California, about 1500 miles from Portland, the first of May to marry a Granddaughter of mine. We shall likely visit with them for a week or more. Hastily, but truly yours in love and interest, H. S. Shangle
---------
In another letter, Hiram writes:
Portland, Oregon June 2, 1951
My dear Kermit - Thank you nice letter just received. A brief reply, as it is difficult for me to write at all anymore. No, I did not go to California to tie the knot for my granddaughter, as I had hoped to do, the youngest girl of our oldest son. I was not physically able for the 1500 mile trip, as I had planned. They live in the desert, Blythe. The most productive country I ever. He and his son in law have 2200 acres of that rich soil. 900 acres in melons this year. They are now shipping melons to New York, Chicago, etc. 1300 head of cattle, after shipping a large lot of cattle away. But I did not intend to write only a few lines, and nothing of this. But now I will add, they have 150 Mexicans to do the field work.
I wrote months ago to your relative in New Jersey but to date no reply. The printers are behind with my work, but notifies me that they will have them ready next week. Please print or write very plainly the names and addresses of your sisters in New York and elsewhere. The eyes of both my dear wife, now 86 yrs, and mine 95, are not so good as formerly. Hence mistakes in my writing. Since my stroke 7 years ago I am growing more frail and weaker every day. Near 9 months ago I preached my last sermon to date and perhaps the last in a ministry of 82 years. But I await patiently and willingly my Transfer to my eternal inheritance. "And that will be glory for me." My prayers and best wishes for you and your dear family. God bless all of you now and forever. H.S. Shangle
In another letter:
Portland, Oregon October 28, 1951
My dear Mr. Shangle, (sent to Mr. K.P. Shangle in Sycamore, Illinois)
Did you see the notice in the Christian Advocate of the death of my husband, H.S. Shangle, who passed away August 6. Drop me a card and i will send you one of his booklets. Your name is on the mailing list which he left me. The address must be correct or you would not get the booklet. Mrs. H.S. Shangle

Walla Walla Union Bulletin 1953 February 20
Shangle Gets Rotary Honor (Picture)
District 162 of Rotary International has just chosen Bruce Shangle of Blythe, Calif. its governor nominee for the year starting july 1, according to word reaching Walla Walla.
Shangle, many years a resident of this valley, helped organize the Rotary club at Milton-Freewater in 1928 and again was an organizer of the club at Blythe, in 1947.
There are 62 clubs in District 162, with about 4, 000 members. By attaining this distinction, Shangle has brought to the 10 clubs in the "Desert Council" their first district governor.
Shangle retired from active personal business February 1, 1952. He had spent the previous 10 years in and near Blythe. He left Milton-Freewater country in 1940 to engage in the produce business in California
As a young man Shangle did newspaper reporting in 1906 and 1907 on the Walla Walla Union and was its city editor in 1908. From 1909 to 1915 he owned and published the Milton Eagle and later engaged in the fruit and produce business in the Twin Cities until the move to California was made.
In Blythe, as well as in this valley, Shangle has been active in Church, fraternal and community affairs. His father, the Rev H.S. Shangle, for many years occupied pulpits in Walla Walla and the Twin Cities and he, at one time, headed Columbia College at Milton.

HISTORY OF YAKIMA VALLEY
WAPATO
_This vigorous little city is in the very heart of the 50,000 acres of fruitful land which is watered from the great canal that we noted in coming out of Pohotecute. That area is but a minor part of what is to come. For the government plans contemplate the irrigation of 120,000 acres from the gravity system and an additional 80,000 from the pumping plant. When this quarter of a million acres is in actual productivity, it will certainly support several large cities. Wapato will without doubt be one. The name of this town signifies "potato," though the original native word applied to a bulbous root growing in shallow ponds, especially west of the Cascade Mountains, a root which w.a one of the prime articles of food for the natives. The town was laid out by George S. Rankin and Alexander McCreadv in 1903. These enterprising and intelligent builders took up this matter as one among a number of large undertakings, perceiving clearly the sure development of the country. The), bought the land of the Indians under the townsite law.
They also inaugurated the first bank and the Wapato Development Company.
The town now has nearly 1,000 inhabitants. Ther, is a well edited weekly paper, the "'Independent," founded in 1906, now owned and managed by V.rilliam Verran, who took charge in 1909. There is a first-class school system, with high school and grade schools, with an enrollment in the high school of 89 and in the grades of 625, an enrollment truly surprising for the size of the town, until we learn from the officers of the school that the adjoining region just outside the town furnishes a strong contingent. The value of the school property is estimated at $100,000, also a surprising aggregate for a town of less than 1.000, a good many of whom are of the Indian race.
The high school was founded in 1910, at which time A C. Kellogg was superintendent and S.A.. Ness was principal, assisted by Mrs. C. R. Duncan.
At the present date the teaching force is as follows:
C. Paine Shangle, superintendent.
