GEORGE W. EBBERT
Sixty year's have elapsed since George W. Ebbert, with his three brothers, arrived in Oregon, and here he has since made his home. His birth occurred in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, on the 12th of August, 1829, his parents being James and Eliza (DeVickman) Ebbert. In 1851 the family residence was established in Van Buren county, Iowa, where the parents passed away. Unto Mr. and Mrs. James Ebbert were born twenty-two children, all of whom are deceased with the exception of four sons and two daughters.
Being a member of a large family of small means, the educational advantages of George W. Ebbert were very limited. At a very early age he assumed his share of the responsibility connected with the maintenance of the family, remaining under the parental roof until he was twenty-three. In 1852, the year after the family located in Iowa, he and three of his brothers, James, who lives in Lane county, Oregon, William, who is a resident of Gilman county, this state, and Harrison, whose home is in Salem, decided to come to the northwest. On the 4th of May of that year they started across the plains to Oregon with a wagon and an ox team. On the 4th of August following they reached their destination, having had an uneventful journey. When he first located here George W. Ebbert worked in the mines. but he later withdrew from this and located in the Willamette valley, where he farmed for a time. From there he went to Portland and worked with one of his brothers for two years, at the expiration of which time he went to Lane county. There he was married in 1856, and he and his bride at once settled on a ranch. They began their domestic life in a shanty made of slabs, with the planed side in, continuing to reside there for three years. They subsequently purchased another place located near by, upon which they erected a log house, and there for thirty years they lived comfortably and happy. General farming and stock-raising engaged the attention of Mr. Ebbert, who met with a most gratifying degree of success in both lines of his business. In the ' 80s he disposed of this property and invested the proceeds in a ranch adjacent to Monmouth, which he still owns. He and his wife are now living retired in the village of Monmouth, where they occupy a comfortable residence.
Mr. Ebbert chose for his wife Miss Elizabeth Landes, who was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, on the 6th of September, 1840, a daughter of Abraham and Amanda (Levelly Landes. The father was a native of Hardy county, West Virginia, and the mother of Wayne county, Indiana, in which state they were married. They subsequently removed to Iowa, where they resided for sixteen years. In 1854 the parents and nine children started for Oregon with a wagon and ox team. They crossed the Missouri river on the 28th of May, and three months later arrived in Lane county, locating in Eugene, Oregon, on the 2d of September. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Landes numbered thirteen children, two of whom, Nancy Ann and Miranda, passed away in Iowa. The others are as follows: William Henry, deceased; Mrs. Ebbert; Martha Jane, also deceased; Sarah; Mary Ann; Melissa; Winfield S.; Zachariah T.; Catherine; Frances Amanda; and Elmira, deceased. The two last named were born in Oregon. The mother passed away at the family home in Lane county, at the age of fifty-three. The father subsequently married again and went to California, but later returned to Oregon, passing away in the vicinity of Eugene, at the venerable age of ninety-five years. Of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Ebbert there were born the following children: Harriet; Belle; Dempsey, deceased; Melissa; Adna; Idis; Henry; Lulu; and Elbie.
Mr. Ebbert's residence in Oregon covers the formative period in the history of the state's development, in the progress of which he has taken a deep interest. He has witnessed the introduction of modern methods and ideas in the promotion of the state's natural resources, as pioneer conditions have receded with the advent of a newer and higher civilization that stamps the nation's progress.

George W. EBBERT moved from Lapwaii Mission to the Willamette Valley May 20, 1839 with his Native American wife. By late 1839, he was living across the river from William Johnson's place near the Falls.

Lane County Oregon
James A. Ebbert: Springfield Pioneer Rancher
Through his judicious speculations in real estate and the capable direction of his agricultural pursuits, James A. Ebbert, who lives retired on his ranch three and a half miles east of Springfield, is known as one of the most prosperous pioneer ranchmen in this portion of Lane county. He was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, on March 25, 1831, and is a son of James and Eliza (De Vecmon) Ebbert. The father was a native of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and the mother of Cumberland, Maryland, but they were married in Fayette county and made that their home until 1851. In the latter year they removed to Van Buren county, Iowa, where the father bought some land that he cultivated until the mother's death in 1866. He subsequently disposed of his farm and went to Birmingham, Iowa, and lived retired until his death in 1873. Mr. and Mrs. Ebbert were the parents of a large family, some of whom died in Pennsylvania and others in Iowa, our subject being the eldest of the six who are living. The others in order of birth are as follows: George, a resident of Monmouth, Oregon; William, of Condon, Oregon; Harrison, who served for three years in the Civil war and is now living in Salem, Oregon; Ingabe, the wife of Joseph Keck, of Seattle, Washington; and Harriet, who married A. H. Morris, of Van Buren county, Iowa.
At the age of sixteen years James A. Ebbert left the parental roof and began earning his own living. He accompanied his brother to Iowa in 1851, and upon his arrival there rented some land that he cultivated for a year. At the end of that time he continued his journey westward to Oregon, having been eighty days in crossing the prairies with an ox team. He first located near Hillsboro in Washington county but subsequently went to the Rogue River country and prospected in the gold mines for eighty days. He returned to Portland in 1852 and the next year he came to Lane county and took up a donation claim near Springfield. He energetically applied himself to the cultivation of this for four years selling it in 1859 for one thousand dollars. This he immediately invested in one hundred sixty acres of land which formed the nucleus of his present ranch, and continued his agricultural pursuits. In the direction of his activities he has met with good success and has extended his property holdings until he now owns five thousand acres of rich land in Lane county, Oregon, and Whitman county, Washington, all of it under high cultivation. His home place is well improved and fully equipped with every appliance or machine essential to modern agricultural methods.
On the 15th of December, 1853, Mr. Ebbert was united in marriage to Elizabeth Brattain, who was born in Illinois in 1930, and was a daughter of Paul and Martha Brattain. They removed from Illinois to Iowa, and there the mother passed away in 1846. Six years later the father, with the other members of the family, crossed the plains to Oregon. Mr. Brattain took up a donation claim in the vicinity of Springfield, and continued to reside there until his death in 1883. He was one of the prominent and influential citizens of the pioneer period and assisted in framing the state constitution, and he served in a like capacity in Iowa. Ten children were born of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Brattain, all but three of whom are deceased. Those living are as follows: Amelia, the wife of J. F. Smith, of Jasper, this state; James Cyrus of Springfield, where he resides on the old Brattain donation claim, still owned by the heirs of the family; and William, who lives in Okanogan county, Washington. Mrs. Ebbert passed away on the 29th of July, 1902, her death occurring in Oregon, as did likewise those of the other members of the family.
The political allegiance of Mr. Ebbert is accorded the republican party, but he has never been identified with governmental affairs in an official capacity. His residence in Oregon covers a period of sixty years, fifty-eight of which he has passed in Lane county. During that time he has substantially contributed toward its progress and development along agricultural lines through the capable efficient methods he has adopted in the cultivation of his extensive holdings.

James A Ebbert: resides seven miles east of Eugene City; is a farmer; post-office Springfield; was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1831; arrived in Iowa in 1851, and came to state and county in 1852; was married in Lane county, Oregon, in 1853, to Elizabeth Brattain. Mr. Ebbert has a fine farm of 320 acres, fifteen acres in hops. He also has a warehouse in Eugene City, with a capacity of 40,000 bushels.

Most Complete Ever Published of Pioneers Who Came 75 Years Ago.
Oregon gained many new residents in 1850. The territory was becoming better
known in the east, since the gold rush to California had created an active
market for agricultural product and the Willamette Valley afforded as almost
limitless opportunity for production of the staples the gold miners needed.
Price was no object in the gold camps and the Oregon pioneers, chiefly
agriculturists, were coming in increasing numbers.
The following list of the immigration of 1850 to Oregon is from the archives
of the Oregon Historical Society and, although not complete, includes most
of those who came that year.

John Hackney, Jr.
The Hackneys originally came from England prior to the Revolutionary War and were participants in the struggle for Independence.
Aaron Hackney, the paternal grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was born in Berkeley county, Virginia, and came to Fayette county in early life and settled near Heistersburg, Luzerne township.
John Hackney Sr was born in Luzerne township March 20, 1783, was a farmer and married Lydia Sidwell in 1812. They had eight children: James Hackney, Aaron Hackney, Amy Hackney, John Hackney, Hiram Hackney, Samuel Hackney, Lyida Hackney, Jane Hackney and Hannah Hackney. Lydia Sidwell Hackney was born in Virginia in 1787 and was a daughter of James Sidwell, who was married to Amy Long, daughter of Dr Owen Long who
lived near Winchester, Virginia.
John Hackney Jr was born August 15, 1920, on the old Hackney farm near New Salem, Menallen township, and on December 5, 1844, was married to Isabella Ebbert. They had ten children: James Hackney, Hiram Hackney and Mary Frances Hackney, deceased, and Samuel Hackney, born July 9, 1851, is married to Anna M Lickey, and lives in Harvey county, Kansas; John William Hackney, born December 17, 1858, at home; Lydia Jane Hackney, born June 29, 1856, is married to Aaron T Porter, and lives in Lyon county, Kansas; Alvin E Hackney, born October 8, 1858, at home; Eliza Ellen Hackney, born December 29, 1861, music teacher; Laura Bell Hackney, born May 4, 1864; and George Wyly Hackney, born June 21, 1867, and is now in the senior class in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, Philadelphia. Mrs Hackney's grandfather was George Ebbert, and was a merchant and has his store on Main street in the early history of Uniontown. Her father, James Ebbert, was born at Uniontown in 1792, and was a farmer and lived on the farm now owned by John W Carothers, near the County Home. Her maternal grandfather was a Frenchman by the name of Devicman and settled near Oakland, Maryland.
Mr Hackney was raised on the home farm and is one of the best farmers of the county. He was educated in the subscription schools of the neighborhood, and also at Aaron Hague/?Hogue and Richard Taylor's school. He is an ardent republican and takes considerable interest in political matters. He was raised a Quaker, but with wife and entire family are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. Mr Hackney is a conscientious, useful and intelligent member of society, and an honest and successful businessman.

Born in 02 Dec 1871 in Baker County, he was the son of J.A. and Eva and remained at home until he reached his majority. He then engaged in the butchering business for some time in Baker City and was later elected to the office of county clerk and afterwards was appointed depty sheriff of Baker county. After serving in that capacity he engaged on his own account in the butcher business and later purchased a ranch of one hundred and sixty acres and took up farming and raising stock.
He was married to Miss Lulu M. Ebbert on 05 April 1899, she the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Landis). Her father was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and her mother was born in Iowa. The father emigrated to Oregon in 1852 and the mother arrived in 1854. They settled in Lane county, Oregon where they lived until 1887 at which time they removed to Monmouth. - Frank and Lulu Geddes were the parents of at least three children: Otto E.; Wilma E.; and Joseph F. Geddes.

FRANK GEDDES
A product of this county, being born here on December 2, 1871, to Joseph A. and Eva M. (Freligh) Geddes, the subject of this sketch is proving himself to be a man of whom his native county may be proud and one worthy of the entire confidence and esteem of its population. His birthplace was within four miles of the site of Baker City, his parents having settled there the year previous. He was educated in the schools of the county, finishing that important part of a man's fitting for life in the Monmouth Normal, where he graduated from the commercial department and took one additional year in post-graduate studies. Following this he returned to Baker City and took part in assisting his father in his business until 1898. At that time the people of the county called him from this occupation and installed him as clerk of the county. So faithfully and with such efficiency did he discharge the functions thus devolving upon that that he was a second time elected to assume the same trust, and serving in this capacity with his characteristic virtues and talent, we find him at the present time. Since his majority and even before he has always evinced a great interest in the affairs of the county and the nation and is one of the prominent figures in his party, the Reupublican, where his counsels are received with credit, since his foresight and wisdom are becoming manifest to all.
The marriage of Mr. Geddes and Miss Lulu M., daughter of George and Elizabeth Ebbert, was solemnized in Monmouth on April 5, 1899, and to them has been born one child, Otto Ebbert. Mr. Geddes owns a nice home at 2345 Grove street, besides other property. He is a member of the K. of P., Gauntlet Lodge, No. 8, and he has been a delegate to the grand lodge for the past two sessions. He is also a member of the Fraternal Union, and of the Elks, Baker City Lodge, No. 338. Mr. Geddes is possessed of that happy geniality and well rounded balance that wins and retains many friends and his popularity is very flattering, and it is pleasant to state that commensurate therewith is a very acceptable manifestation of wisdom that is sure to lead free from the rocks in his onward journey.

L.H. Ebbert Dies, Hospital
Lester H. Ebbert, 74 years old, native Oregonian and recently employed as building custodian by Whitman college, died Thursday morning in a Walla Walla hospital. Death followed a brief illness.
He was born July 20, 1875, in Springfield, Ore., and came to the Walla Walla valley, from Portland, in 1918, engaging in farming in the Stateline district until a few years ago when he moved into Walla Walla. His home was at 227 Boyer avenue.
He was a member of the White Temple Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Minetta May Ebbert of Walla Walla, and one son Millard Ebbert of Portland.

Ebbert Funeral Service Conducted from Chapel
Funeral services for Lester H. Ebbert were conducted Monday morning from a local chapel with the Rev. Luther Plankenhorn, pastor of White Temple Baptist Church, officiating and burial in the family plot in Mountain View Cemetery.
Robert McGrath was soloist with Mrs. Plankenhorn as organist.
Pallbearers included Frank Tash, Percy Clarke, Wayne Wagner, Frank Grange, Marvin Mayberry and Louis B. Biersner.

Wilma Geddes Henner, l00, died Saturday, April 12, 2003.
Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Haines Methodist Church. Pastor Sally Wiens of the church will officiate.
Wilma was born on the corner of Madison and Grove streets in Baker City, the daughter of LuLu and Frank Geddes. Her grandfather owned and operated the Geddes-Pollman Butcher Shop on First Street in Baker City.
Later the family moved to the Missouri Flats area, and then again to Hereford where her mother provided the daily lunch for the stage driver and passengers. After receiving her teaching certificate from Baker High School in 1920, she taught school at Muddy Creek
Bertha Warfield Boesch, Oral Ensminger Aldrich, Cora Mae Fidler, Doris Loennig, and Russell Williams were all students of Wilma's. In 1921, she married John E. Henner. They had been married for 65 years when he died in 1986. Her son, John Jr., was born in 1924.
Wilma and her husband, John, shared many interests. Among them were hunting, fishing, huckleberry picking and rock hounding. Some of their rock finds can still be seen today around her house in Haines and beside the Haines City Hall.
In 1939, in Haines, John and Wilma established the Henner Garage where Treeline Woodworking is currently. John and Wilma worked side by side there until they sold it in 1962. Wilma was the "gofer," driving by herself to Ontario and to La Grande over the old Bidwell Hill road.
Wilma and John were instrumental in helping to establish the Eastern Oregon Museum. They donated many things from their own antique collection to start the infant museum.
In the late '30s, Wilma began braiding rugs using a unique four-braid system that required no sewing together of the braids. Although legally blind in the last 10 years of her life, she continued to braid. Her rugs can be found all over the country.
She was an active member of the Haines Methodist Church, sang at many functions throughout the county and entertained many people as a member of the Senior Citizen Kitchen Band.
It was a great joy for her when her beloved grandson, Jack Henner, and her great-grandson, Brandon, came to live next door to her in Haines and when her great-granddaughter, Lora, came for her yearly visit. Wilma enjoyed gardening, flowers, playing cards and her many dear, dear friends and relatives. She was much beloved and cherished.
Survivors include her grandson, Jack; great-grandson, Brandon; and her great-granddaughter, Lora; many nieces, nephews, and cousins on both the Geddes and Henner sides; and John Sr.'s sister, Edna Jordan, of Grants Pass.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son, John Jr.; daughter-in-law, Dorothy; and her two brothers, Otto and Joe.
The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Haines Methodist Church, the Eastern Oregon Museum or the Pathway Hospice through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Baker City, OR 97814.

Dorothy Henner
Dorothy Jane ?Dot? Henner, 73, of Haines, died July 29, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
At her request, there will be no services.
Mrs. Henner was born Nov. 11, 1927, at Baker City to James and Mabel York Hall along with her twin brother, Donald, who preceded her in death in the early 1970s.
She married John E. Henner Jr. in 1946 in Baker City, and lived and worked in Haines until 1960, when the couple moved to Irrigon. After living in the Hermiston area for seven years, she and her husband moved to The Dalles; they eventually moved back to Haines, where they retired. Mrs. Henner worked as a cook, waitress and bartender in many restaurants through the years. Mr. Henner was a mechanic. He preceded her in death in 1996.
In December of 1956 Mrs. Henner gave birth to the light of her life, her only son, Jack. Despite severe health problems, she endured pregnancy to give life to her son, who was at her side as she passed.
Mrs. Henner enjoyed many outdoor activities with her husband, adored her grandchildren and enjoyed sewing. Her rough exterior rarely gave way to her charitable side. She was there in her own way when someone was in need, and there are many people who have stories of their experiences with her.
Mrs. Henner is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Cindy Henner of Haines; her mother-in-law, Wilma Henner of Haines; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Violet Hall of Hermiston; sisters, Millie Hickerson of Baker City, Irene Martin of Boise and Loreen Spriet of Colorado; two grandchildren, Lora and Brandon; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Henner was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Glen and Donald Hall; and a sister, Ada.
Contributions in Mrs. Henner?s memory may be made to the American Heart Association or American Cancer Society in care of the Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, Ore., 97814.

Robert Eugene "Bob" Geddes, 62, a longtime Haines resident, died Oct. 3, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
A memorial gathering is scheduled Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Haines Steak House.
Mr. Geddes was born on Nov. 8, 1938, at Baker City to Joseph F. Geddes and Viola M. McCurdy Geddes. The family lived at Hereford where Mr. Geddes was raised and educated.
After graduating from high school, he attended Oregon Technical Institute in Klamath Falls where he studied office machinery repair. Upon returning to the Baker City area, Mr. Geddes worked at Ryder Bros., Meadowgold and the Baker County Road Department. He then worked at road construction in Heppner, Hermiston and Alaska. He later returned to Baker City where he worked at Farmterials until 1985 when he was disabled in an accident.
He was married to Lois Spriet until 1975. They had two daughters, Kathy and Tammy; and a son, Keith Wade.
He married Nancy Painter in Baker City on Oct. 4, 1982. They had one daughter, Kimberly Kay.
Mr. Geddes enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and golfing, but his main interests were always his yard and his home.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Geddes of Haines; daughter, Kathy Brown, her husband, Aaron, and children, Cody and Alex Brown, all of Baker City; daughters, Tammy Jo Geddes of Hailey, Idaho, and Kimberly Kay Geddes Heitz of Haines; stepdaughters and their families, Zina and Bill Bryson and their children, Ronald Gentry and Mandy Anderson of West Richland, Wash., Cathy and Dennis Gardner and their children, Terri and Mary Linder, of Roseburg and Pam and Keith Arnzen and their children, Christopher and Brian Arnzen of Pampa, Texas; four great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Leola Painter of Baker City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Shiela Geddes of La Grande, Gerald and Roseanne Geddes of Baker City and Terry and Ellen Geddes of Ontario; nieces and nephews, Jerianne Hanley and her husband, Tom, of Baker City, Brian Geddes and his wife, Amy, of Boise, Rita Humphreys and her husband, Steve, of Gresham, Theresa Munn and her husband, Ryan, of Prosser, Wash., Gene Geddes and his wife, Emily, of Spokane, Wash., and Craig Geddes of Provo, Utah; and many great-nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and in-laws.

Robert Ebbert
Robert Ray Ebbert, a Prineville resident passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 6, with his wife at his bedside. He was 63.
There will be a public viewing held at Prineville Funeral Home on Wednesday March 9, from 5 to 9 p.m., and the funeral will be there on Thursday, March 10, at 9 a.m. This service will be followed by a brief graveside committal at Juniper Haven Cemetery at 10 a.m.
"Bob," to those who knew him, was born on May 22, 1941 in Eugene, the son of Delbert and Pauline (Allumbaugh) Ebbert. He grew up and attended schools in Redmond, and Crook County High School. After high school, he joined the Navy in 1959 and served during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1963 having achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. he served aboard the U.S.S. Thomaston.
After his discharge, he lived briefly in St. Helens, before settling in Prineville. It was in Prineville the he met and married his wife Marjorie, on May 7, 1966. They have lived in Prineville since then.
His great passions in his life have been his family and his love of race cars. He had great skills as both a driver and a mechanic and he was able to assemble and race his own drag cars in Madras. In 2002, he had earned enough points to race in Division 6 finals in Yakima, Wash. He was able to make several rounds before elimination with his '73 Olds Cutlass. He also enjoyed reading hot rod magazines and building model race cars. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and was a Junior Governor in 1970.
Mr. Ebbert is survived by his wife Marjorie; his son Michael Ray Ebbert and daughter Michelle Lynn Randall; his sisters and their husbands, Jean and Gary Getner, and Sherry and John Cawthorn; niece and her husband, Jennifer and Russ McElroy; nephews, Robby Randall and Shayne Getner; great-nephew, Joshua McElroy; and grandchildren David, Christopher, and Marshall Randall.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to Pioneer Memorial Hospital at 1201 NE Elm St. Prineville in his name.
Arrangements are under the direction of Prineville Funeral Home.

She was the youngest of 7 children born to Mansfield and Aldorah McGrew. She grew up in Walla Walla and graduated from Washington State University in 1926, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She moved to Everett, WA where she taught physical education until her marriage to Joseph Harrison Ebbert in April, 1943. They moved to Wollochet Bay in Gig Harbor in 1945, where she has resided since. After her husband's death in 1955, she married Walter W. Bauer in 1963. Twila loved her home and her garden, and most of all her family. She was admired by those who knew her for having a style all her own and a cheerful disposition.She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, . . . and 2 granddaughters, . . . .The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to staff at Gig Harbor Health are who cared for her during her final days.At her request there will be no service.
