McLean's Body Found In Creek East of City
The body of an elderly Walla Walla man, missing for 11 days, was found Sunday afternoon on Mill Creek about one-half mile above the diversion dam by four girls riding horseback.
Coroner Loy Kenedy said the body of Charles H. McLean, 73, was half in the water and half out. He said that although death was apparently from natural causes it had not been determined Monday whether it was due to drowning or a heart attack.
The girls - Ellen, Tresa nd Feny Falkner and Margaret Garske - were riding in the area when they discovered the body. They notified Capt. Rbert Swenson of the Walla Walla National Guard unit, working at nearby Rooks Park. Capt. Swenson notified sheriff's officers, police and Deputy Prosecutor Albert Gordon.
Officers said it is probable that McLean died the first or second day he disappeared because all reports of individuals having seen him occurred in that time period.
McLean, in poor health, failed to return to his home, 329 Willow, the afternoon of Sept. 9.
He was seen carrying a paper bag containing a loaf of bread, climbing over a fence in the 1600 block on East Alder the same day.
For several days, sheriff's officers, members of the local REACT radio team and searchers on horseback, conducted a blanket search of the Eastgate area without success.
A posse of more than 100 spent 11 days searching for McLean and Saturday a plane joined the possed flying over the Eastgate and Mill creek areas, major highways and on all sides of the Walla Walla River from McNary pool to Walla Walla.
On the day he was listed as missing, McLean and his wife had walked to Ninth and Rose in search of some kerosene,, Sheriff Arthur Klundt said. McLean said he was tired and returning home but he failed to get there.
Members of the family offered a $200 reward for information leading to the finding of the missing man.
