John bought land in Lee Co. Iowa in 1846.
Apparently John, his son Harlow, and his stepson James Boggs went to CA during the gold rush as they are listed in the 1850 census for Louisville, El Dorado Co., CA.
Their occupations are given as miners.
Homestead filed by John C. Barney on 3 Sep 1866 Book A p.310: The Southwest quarter of Section 19 township 11 north range 4 east base and meridian of Mount Diablo. Containing 160 acres.
While most sources give his name as John C. Barney, the voter registration list for Sutter Co. CA gave his complete name: John Cary Barney
In John's will, he left all of his property, both real estate and personal, to
his wife Elizabeth. He also made her the executrix of his estate which had a
value of about $1200.00 in real estate and $300.00 in personal property
situated in Sutter Co. CA.

The Barneys took Donation Land Claim #4130 on Salt Creek near Buell.
Harlow arrived in OR on 20 Oct 1853 and settled his land claim 1 Jan 1854. -
Genealogical Material in Oregon Donation Land Claims Vol. 2; fiche #6051173
Harlow bought land south of Walla Walla, the north half of the southwest
quarter of section 5 township 6 north range 35 east of the Willamette Meridian from J & J Young and Gn Young and wife for $100.00 in gold coin on 27 Aug 1891.
The land was in the next section over from the Valley Chapel Cemetery. Valley Chapel is a group of houses, not really a town and the cemetery is not being used anymore. It is reached by turning off of H12 west of Walla Walla at Last Chance and turning south.
Walla Walla local cemetery records had the following:

Camping Out includes Entire Lowden Family
"Cooperation means success,: says Mrs. Leon (Bonita) Mayberry of Lowden, state president of Ladies' Auxiliary, Washington Rural Letter Carriers' Association. "We try to assist our husbands in many ways, especially with correspondence to congressmen and representatives in our government."
Leon Mayberry took over the route out of Lowden, which covers approximately 40 miles, upon retirement of Archie Dennis.
Mrs. Mayberry, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harlow Barney, were pioneers of the Lowden district where she was born and raised, has four children; Daryll and his wife, the former Judy Buckley, make their home in Touchet; Mrs. William (Phyllis) Dial, her husband and 16-month-old son, Matthew, live in Milton-Freewater; Pat is in his junior year at Wa-Hi; and seven-year-old Mike attends Lowden grade school.
Sisters of her daughter-in-law, Charlene and Glenna Buckley, have made their home with the Mayberrys since the death of their parents in an auto accident near Wallula Junction almost two years ago.
Mrs. Mayberry has been an active worker in every organization which could be of benefit to her family and community. She was Lowden 4-H leader eight years; helped organize Lowden PTA; has been active in French town Recreation Club, a group which has provided a meeting place for 4-H clubs and other youth activities; in Lowden Study Club; and for her own pleasure, Lo-Wa-To bridge club.
"A favorite hobby of the whole family is camping out," says Mrs. Mayberry. "We recently acquired a travel-trailer with cooking and sleeping facilities, and other than adding a few groceries we are ready to leave on a moment's notice. And that is just about how much notice my husband often gives," declares Mrs. Mayberry.
In spite of a busy schedule which includes working Saturday as postal clerk in the Lowden post office and occasionally substituting for Mrs. Brashear. Lowden school cook, Mrs. Mayberry is capable homemaker, say members of the family.
"We just don't use mixes of any kind" says Mrs. Mayberry. "We start from scratch with cakes, cookies and homemade breads."
Sewing and gardening are also favorite hobbies. Mrs. Mayberry made her daughter's wedding dress and Charlene's dress for the Touchet May Day celebration last week.
"We celebrated our silver anniversary last November," says Mrs. Mayberry, "and I'm looking forward to another wonderful 25 years. We will strive for the 50-year mark which my parents celebrated three years ago."
The auxiliary's state convention is dated July 9-12 at Moses Lake and the Mayberrys plan to be on hand. The state project this year is the same as the National -- education for the mentally retarded.
