Nichols Home is Old Timer
Among many Milton residences with noteworthy historical background is the Nichols home. It stands athwart the extreme south end of Main street, and hugs a high and steep rocky cliff on the west side of the huge lawn. In a southerly direction meanders the Walla Walla river canyon. The the east is the spreading plain which serves as a gateway to the canyon proper. It is all very attractive.
To history-minded folk, the place has deep significance. In the first year of the 1870’s William Nichols and Andrew Spence came up from California to look for a location. Nichols acquired the land on which the home now stands. It was only after talking to Ben Nichols, present occupant of the home, Charles Spence, son of the original Andrew, and D. R. Nichols that the precise dates of the arrival of the two men were approximated.
Came with the Spences
The two families joined the advance party, and the Nichols family first occupied a log house nearer the river, declares D. R. An indefinite time thereafter, Nichols built a fine frame home on the property that is now the lawn and residence site. Neither the Nichols men nor Charles Spence can fix the date of construction with accuracy.
In the middle 1890’s – 1893 to be exact – the original frame house was moved off the premises to make room for a larger and a finer home. The building was cut in two. The main portion was moved to Nichols street and Main, a block or more away. Mrs. Addie Wells now occupies it. The original kitchen was set up in the same part of town and was attached in due time to another residence, which Orville Walden now occupies.
The spacious yard is currently shaded in summer months by a group of sprawling maple trees, which show evidence of considerable age. But these are not nearly as old as the residence. Originally the family set out numerous poplars, but these were later replaced by locusts, Ben Nichols declares. Then, again, the locusts were uprooted and replaced by maples that now spraddle out over the grassy lawn.
Original Pine Remains
There is an exception to this. At the time the original house was moved off, a pine sapling stood squarely in the path. The sapling was bent over and the house moved across it. Now that pine sapling towers high and straight over all the others.
Much of the rocky cliff between the south end of Main street, and the deep gulch that is known as Nichols Canyon and leads toward Baskett mountain, has been converted into a natural rock garden. City water has been piped to a tiny pool high up on the wall, to give a touch of beauty to the whole project. With an east facing, the flower-adorned rock wall becomes an inviting source of cool shade, on a hot summer evening.
William Nichols Enterprising
The father of the family was an enterprising fellow. He engaged in wheat production, ran livestock on his land when that became a more profitable venture than wheat. He also operated a brick yard, among other enterprises, and built several brick store buildings that now house the Milton Eagle, the Milton Drug and the Milton creamery.
Currently 20 acres of the original Nichols homestead are heavy producers of prunes, the edge of the orchard brushing the residence lawn. Ben Nichols has made the place his home for 56 years of his life.
Three members of the original family. These are: Frank of Portland, D. R. of College Place, Ben on the homestead. G. A. died in Porltand, Jess died in Los Angeles and Mamie Nichols Snodgrass died in Portland.
Several pictures of the old home and the members of the family have unique aspects, which will be noted on this page on a nearby Sunday.

Fiftieth Anniversary is Occasion of Celebration
COLLEGE PLACE -- A gathering of relative and friends Sunday night will mark the 50th anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey R. Nichols, pioneers of this area and residents of College Place for many years. The celebration will be held in the dinning room of Conard hall, on the campus where the couple met and kept company during school years. Pictures of early times, music, refreshments, and a display of gifts presented at the 1899 ceremony will be features of the evening.
Dorsey Ralph Nichols was born and raised in Milton, the son of pioneer parents who crossed by ox team to settle in the valley. Emma Lois Hill-Nichols was born in Kansas, coming to College Place with her parents in 1895. The pair carried on their courtship with Mrs. Nichols' two older sisters and their young friends, also from Milton completing the group. All have now celebrated their golden wedding anniversaries, the others as Mr. and Mrs. George Miller and Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Hubbs of Milton.
The January 1, 1899 wedding was solemnized in bitter cold weather that year, reminisces Mrs. Nichols. The college band, serenading the ceremony, was handicapped by frozen horns, she remembers, and Dorsey Nichols' father was the principal figure in another amusing memory. Bringing a sleigh full of friends from Milton to the Hill home in College Place, he was caught in a chinook and bogged down in mud on the way back home after the wedding. Even with chinooks, though, winters were colder in the old days, Mrs. Nichols asserts.
The first store in College Place now known as the College Store, was operated by Dorsey and his father. later, young Nichols was postmaster and storekeeper both for some years. The store was sold in 1905, and the Nichols' moved to Portland, where he served for five years as business manager of the Portland Sanitarium.
Leaving office work on the advise of a physician, Nichols next went into wheat farming near Colfax and later raised sheep in the John Day country. he still claims he's a farmer at heart. After the family's return to College Place, he maintained farm lands in Idaho for some years.
The couple have four children and six grandchildren. merle and Max Nichols, first and third of the children, now operate the Columbia Feed Mill company in Walla Walla. Mrs. Margaret Kelln is the wife of the superintendent of the state corrective farm at Monroe, Washington, and Phila Mae Purdy lives in San Leandro, Calif.
Nichols has been active in the affairs of the area, having just completed two years on the first city council of College Place. he is a Kiwanian, serving on the committee in charge of the city's park development. Best known, perhaps for his property holdings, he originally owned 10 acres of prune orchard, now sold down to three lots in the west section of College Place. He has built or financed eight homes in the town, and has recently carried out a promise made earlier to one of his boys, that he would build a house after reaching the age of 70. supposedly retired, he retains an active interest in civic and church affairs.
Mrs. Nichols will have her bridesmaid of 50 years ago present for this celebration. Mrs. Gertrude Burdick-Trask, now of Cottage Grove, Ore., was a student friend during college years, and will stand up again with the couple. Hearing that the couple still had a clock presented at their wedding by a mutual friend, Mrs Trask exclaimed. "I guess I'm a souvenir too," and Mrs. Nichols promptly retorted, "no more than the rest of us!"
