Notes for ROBERT FRANKLIN VANCIL:

The following information found in Valley Herald records in regards to Vancil Family; author unknown. No date.

THE VANCIL FAMILY

Robert Franklin Vancil was born on Couse Creek, 6 miles from Milton, OR September 9, 1870 to Samuel and Malinda Vancil. His early schooling wasthe little one-room school house about two miles from the home. The Shumway and Winn families on the "Creek" were the neighbors and life-long friends. Mr. Vancil was converted at a Methodist meeting February 10, 1902, and was a faithful member of the church and for several years was the superintendent.

In 1904 he was married to Rena Troyer and they lived in the Freewater area, on the turn across from the Brinker Hardware. He was Marshall of Freewater and later was the manager of the first Tum-a-lum Lumber Yard in Freewater. There children were Helen Harris, Umapine; Ivan, deceased; Marvin, teacher at Mt. Vernon, Oregon; Miss Marie Vancil, Vice-president E-Z-Est Con, Oakland, California.

1908-1912 he built six houses in the Milton part of town; two of them being on the land where Safeway is now, that being part of Vancil's Addition, which he owned.

With William Wagner, father of Paul Wagner, they had a real estate office where the present Freewater Drug Store is located.

Mr. Vancil was on the Milton City Council 16 years and helped in giving Milton the civic water and lighting system. While he was on the council the city purchased the Columbia College Administration Building for the City Hall.

About 1914, he introduced Boy Scouting to the community, and several of his scouts are outstanding business men and citizens.

For about ten years he was the Deputy Assessor for this and of Umatilla County.

He also served Freewater as city recorder for some time. Although living in town, he retained his agricultural interests and at the time of his death owned ranch property near Milton and near Touchet, Wash., and timberland in the mountains.

Mr. Vancil had been actively affiliated with the Knights of Pythias lodge for many years and had served the lodge in every capacity available. He was a member of the Methodist church and was regarded as a sincere Christian and upright man.
