Boston Township is one of the oldest settled townships in the county, and was until February, 1835, a part of Wayne Township.
In the northwest part of the township, Jackson Rambo, an early settler, who died in 1816, aged 55 years old, and in 1846, his widow in her 87th year, settled in 1807 or 1808.

Isaac Rambo is named in the will of his father, Jackson Rambo.
Isaac and Ann lived in Indiana for many years before migrating to Van
Buren County, Iowa, by 1850. With the families of their children,
they migrated to Oregon, arriving on 14 Sep 1853. They claimed 320
acres under the donation lands law of 1850-53. Their children
included these who settled in Oregon and California. Isaac and
several of his family moved to Petaluma, Sonoma County, California,
where both Isaac and Ann died. They had 7 children.Isaac Rambo is named in the will of his father, Jackson Rambo.
Isaac and Ann lived in Indiana for many years before migrating to Van

Philip M. STARR, who was born in Ohio in April, 1825, went to Io wa in 1833 and to the California gold fields in 1849. He returned to Io wa by way of the Isthmus, in 1852, and came to Oregon by ox team the follo wing year.

We the indians in Council assembled Petition for a change in the man agement of this Agency.
Our complaint against Bagley is his inefficiency He is too slow in t he management of the business of the reservations
Through his negligence one of our people was killed and also a whi te man. We sent repeatedly for him to come and settle the difference th en existing between us and some white-men at Salmon River but he pay ed no attention to the matter. We have no confidence in his word, he wi ll promise us one thing to-day and tomorrow forget it
Bagley and some of his employes are raising stock on the reservati on and selling them to government for less than we can
We the indians on the Siletz Reservation have lived here Since 18 56 and have given the general government no trouble.
We think it is time now to be allowed a voice in regard to our ruler
We will send a delegation to Salem to attend conference and can sta te more against Agent Bagley. We will prefer more charges.

Isaac Winfield Starr, M. D.
In the sudden demise of Dr. Isaac Winfield Starr, Oregon lost one of her honored pioneer physicians and surgeons, whose life had passed within the borders of the state and who for over four decades had practiced his profession at Brownsville. His life was actuated by high and honorable principles and his course was ever directed along lines which commanded the respect and confidence of his fellowmen and his colleagues and contemporaries in the profession, of which he was a distinguished representative.
Dr Starr was born at Bellefontaine, Oregon, November 28, 1854, a son of Phillip McWilliams and Ann Maria (Rambo) Starr, who in 1854 left Indiana and with ox teams crossed the plains to Oregon, casting in their lot with its pioneer settlers. They located in Benton County, where the father took up government land and engaged in the conduct of a nursery. He was a man of high moral character and as a minister of the Methodist church he devoted many years to preaching the gospel in Oregon, his work being productive of much good in the communities where he labored. At length he was obliged to discontinue his ministerial work, owing to injuries which he had sustained and he passed away in 1902. The mother had long preceded him in death, passing away in 1856. They possessed many excellent traits of character and were highly esteemed residents of their locality.
Their son, Isaac Winfield Starr, was reared in Benton county and there attended the public and high school of Willamette University at Salem, from which he was graduated with the class of 1877, and then opened an office at Brownsville, Linn county, here continuing in practice the remainder of his life. He ever employed the most scientific methods in the care of the sick and his ability as a physician and surgeon won for him a large practice. Actuated by laudable ambition, his professional career was one of continuous progress and at all times he kept in touch with the latest scientific researches and discoveries, thereby promoting his skill and efficiency in his chosen calling.
On the 15th of January, 1882, Dr. Starr was united in marriage to Miss Clara Bishop a daughter of William R. and Elizabeth Jane (Adams) Bishop, the former born in Indiana in 1826, while the lattewr was a native of Missouri. When about six years of age the mother made the journey across the plains to California with her parents, while the father went to that state in 1850, attracted thither by the discovery of gold. Six years later , or in 1856, he came to Oregon and after spending a few months in Multnomah County he removed to Linn County. He was a minister of the Presbyterian church who also followed the profession of teaching, in which he was very successful, imparting clearly and readily to others the knowledge he had acquired, and for a period of twenty-five years he engaged in teaching school in Linn county, becoming well known as an educator, at the same time continuing his ministerial labors. He likewise purchased land but did not engage in its cultivation. leasing the property with profit. In 1879 he removed to Portland, where he became bookkeeper for the Brownsville Woolen Mill, retaining that position for a period of eighteen years. For twenty-five years he continued a resident of Portland and there passed away in May 1913, at the age of eighty-seven years. In California, in 1853, he had married Elizabeth Jane Adams, who died in March, 1912. He was a man of kindly spirit and generous impulses, beloved by all who knew him, and was commonly known as "Father" Bishop. In 1866-67 he filled the position of private secretary to Governor Ballard of Idaho and he also became prominent in the public life of Oregon, representing Multnomah county in the state legislature, where he gave thoughtful and earnest consideration to alll vital questions coming up for settlement, stanchly supporting all measures which he believed to be of benefit to the public at large. He was a man of varied activities whose life was a most useful one. He always stood for moral uplift and intellectual growth and his support was ever given to those movements which had for their object the bettering of conditions of humanity in his district and the elevation of the standards of life to a higher and more ideal plane.
To Dr. and Mrs. Starr were born two children: Chester Harvard, the elder, born October 23, 1882, was united in marriage to Miss Norma Hendricks of Eugene, Oregon. He is now district manager for the Willard Storage Battery Company, with headquarters in Dallas, Texas; Georgia Leanna, born March 16, 1892, is the wife of Charles Dean Morse, a prominent automobile dealer of Brownsville, and they have become the parents of a son, Charles Winfield, whose birth occurred on the 30th of April, 1919.
In his political views Dr. Starr was a republican, and fraternally he was identified with the Woodmen of the World, the United Artisans and the Masons, his membership being in the chapter of the latter organization, while his professional connections were with the Oregon State and Central Willamette Medical Societies and the American Medical Association. His religious faith was indicated by his attendance upon the servics of the Methodist Episcopal church and his life was ever guided by its teachings. He passed away November 2, 1918, at the age of sixty-four years, after an illiness of but three hours, and his death was the occasion of deep and widespread regret to all who knew him, for he was a man of many sterling qualities, esteemed and honored because of an upright life and because of his fidelity to duty in every relation. His probity, his sincerity and his genial and kindly manner drew to him a host of friends and admirers and his memory lives as a blessed benediction to all who had the honor of his closer acquaintance.

Mrs. Annie Ferguson Dies here Tuesday
Mrs. Annie M. Ferguson, resident of Umatilla county for her entire life, passed away on Tuesday morning , Jan 21, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy March on Chestnut Street. She was 89 years old.
(This house sits to the left of the Frazier homestead, lookng from Chestnut Street.)
Mrs. Ferguson was a real pioneer daughter of Umatilla county, having been born Nov 7, 1868 near Weston, her parents being Lewis A. and Sarah Phillips Rambo, who farmed on Dry Creek.
She was married to Arthur Marr, Feb 27, 1891, and to this union was born one son. Vernon L. Marr.
She was united in marriage to Henry C. Ferguson on Nov 16, 1896, and to this union were born three daughters, Sylvia (Mrs. Roy March); Neva May and Olga Jennette who died in infancy. The Ferguson's made their home on Weston mountain and around Umapine until his death in 1909. For the past 21 years she had lived in Milton-Freewater. She was a member of the Undenominational church.
Survivors include her son, Vernon L. Marr M-F, daughter Mrs. Roy March M-F, brothers, Ed Rambo of Buffalo, NY; and Fred Rambo of The Dalles; one sister Mrs. Alice Bowman of Walla Walla; one grandson, Herbert L. March, M-F, four granddaughters, Mrs. R.A. Porter, Mrs. H.H. Johnson, Mrs. C.O. Hewitt, M-F, and Mrs. C.D. Rufener, Portland; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at Munselle's Chapel with Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson in charge of services. Burial will be in the family plot in Weston cemetery.

Mrs. Erickson Taken By Death
MILTON-FREEWATER -- Mrs. Emma Jane Erickson died Friday night in a Walla Walla hospital after an extended illness. She was 77 years old.
Mrs. Erickson was born Jan. 16, 1879 in Weston where she has lived most of her life. For 15 years, she resided in Weiser, Ida. and for the past four years, Mrs. Erickson has made her home in Milton-Freewater.
Five children survive: L.W. Van Winkle of Milton-Freewater; L. M. Van Winkle of Walla Walla; Dale Erickson of Milton-Freewater; Herbert Erickson of Weiser, Ida.; and Mrs. Florence Ward of Bell, Calif. Also surviving are two brothers, Fred Rambo of The Dalles and Ed Rambo of Buffalo, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Ferguson of Milton-Freewater and Mrs. Alice Bowman; 15 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Erickson was a member of the Undenominational Church.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from a local chapel. Interment will follow in the Weston Cemetery.

Railroad Man Retires After Long Service
F.E. Rambo, Union Pacific railroad engineer who observed his 65th birthday last week, is retiring from the company after 29 years and two months of continuous service and mad his final run from Wallula October 22 closing the book on a rather varied and colorful railroading career.
Like nearly everyone else rambo as a young fellow, dreamed of being a railroad engineer, and though it took him a good many years to make up his mind he finally got around to starting in 1916.
"I don't feel much like an oldtimer," he said in a an interview recently, "because the really rough days of railroading came about a lont time before 1916."
Rambo got his start as an engine watchman at Ayer Junction or Haas at the same time managing the old frame hotel and operating the community's one and only store, all of which, he claims, kept him fairly busy. Ayer in 1916 was a far cry from the present-day railroad community which at the time consisted mainly of heat and rattlesnakes, Rambo said.
In 1919 he moved to Walla Walla and served as fireman on the extra runs and for a time fired on the Reith-Wallula run. He became an engineer officially in 1929 but in the rather hectic wartime days of railroading an engineer might be serving as a fireman at any time.
Rambo indicated that his days in the railroad business were uneventful as far as some things were concerned but most satisfyingto him. In his career as firemand and engineer he was involved in only a couple of acidents; however, he stated neither of them was too serious.
he was born in Umatilla county in 1880 and after going through the early stages of life there he moved to the Wallowa country where he farmed for eight years. Following that, the family lived near Umapine for a number of years and then the railroading bug got to be a little too much for him.
Mr and Mrs Rambo left Friday for Buffalo where they will spend an indefinite period visiting relatives. "What happens next is most anybody's guess, " Rambo said.
Rambo has one son in the service, Lt Frank Rambo, who has been with the 82nd airborne division in Germany. He is expected home around the first of the year after 3 1/2 years in the army.

MILTON-FREEWATER - Cecil C. Bowman, retired farmer of the area, who had been in Pendleton for the past hear employed as a bookkeeper, died Wednesday in an Pendleton hospital after a brief illness.
He was born on the Oregon side of the state line March 11, 1894 and had farmed at Weiser, Idaho, Elgin and Umapine.
Survivors include his wife, Alice of Pendleton; seven daughters, Mrs. Cecil Seeliger of LaGrande, Mrs. Kenneth Melton of Pendleton, Mrs. Ralph Moon of Milton-Freewater, Mrs William Butenschoen, Mrs. Wayne McMullin and Mrs. Jack Sturdevant, all of Kennewick, and Mrs. Gene Heffling of LaGrande; two sons, Alvin Bowman of Jacksonville, OR, and Virgil Bowman of Elgin; one sister, Mrs. Elva Wright of Walla Walla, and seven brothers, Archie of Jacksonville, Ercil of Nampa, Idaho, Lorne, Eugene and Allyn of Weser, Idaho, Harvey of Klamath Falls and Francis Bowman of Pendleton; 27 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral is planned for 1:30 pm Saturday from a local chapel with the Rev. Truman Robbins officiating and burial in the Milton IOOF Cemetery.

SYLVIA MARCH
COLLEGE PLACE - Sylvia J. March, 102, a resident of Regency at the Park, 420 SE Myra Road, died there Dec. 2, 2003.
The graveside service will be 2 pm Friday at Milton-Freewater Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Davidson officiating.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, M-F.
Mrs. March was born March 1, 1901, on Weston Mountain, near Weston, to Calvin and Annie Rambo Ferguson. She grew up and attended school in the Weston area.
On May 26, 1920, she married LeRoy March in Walla Walla. They moved to Umapine, where they co-owned a blacksmith shop. In 1937, they moved to Couse Creek Road, where they owned and operated a wheat farm. They farmed with their son until the mid-1950's. In 1848 they moved to their Chestnut Street home in M-F, where she lived until the mid-1990's. Mr. March died April 29, 1980.
Mrs. March was Weston Pioneer Days Queen in 1988. She moved to a retirement center in 1998 and for the past two years resided at Regency.
She enjoyed crocketing, loved rosed and African violets and was an excellent cook. Her kindness extended to all she met.
She was a member of First Christian Church, M-F Garden Club and the Women's Improvement
Club.
Survivors include son Herb March of M-F; daughter Rowena Hewitt of College place; five grandchildren, Herby March of M-F, Jennifer Albade of Burien, WA; and Pat and Mike Hewitt and Sharon Demaris, all of College Place; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Rex B. Hodgen
PENDLETON (Special) -- Rex B. Hodgen, 77, of Pendleton, formerly of Milton-Freewater, died Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ernest Gallaher, with whom he had been living. He had been in ill health for several months.
Hodgen was born in Umapine, Ore. Sept. 25, 1892 and had been a resident of Umapine and Milton-Freewater area most of his life, moving to Pendleton 15 years ago. He married the former Nellie Marie Huntley in 1923 and she died in 1963.
Hodgen had worked on ranches and did concrete work in the area for a number of years. He was a member of the Christian Church of Milton-Freewater.
He is survived by a son, Donald, of Milton-Freewater; four daughters, Mrs. Lee (Carol) Wahlstrom of Morganfield, Ky., Mrs. Gordon (Wreatha) Vickere of Seattle, Mrs. Harold (Violet) Wallowine of Lake Tapps, Wash. and Mrs. Ernest (Jeanne) Gallaher of Pendleton; and two sisters, Mrs. Cecil Troweridge of Sacramento, Calif. and Mrs. Zula Gulliford of Stanfield, Ore. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Another son, Forrest (Jack) Hodgen died in July 1969.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Burns chapel in Pendleton with Rev. Warren Fleischmann of the Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Lowell Van Winkle
Lowell M. Van Winkle, 75, of 610 Ankeny died yesterday in a local hospital.
He was born December 29, 1897 in Lewiston, Idaho. He has been a life-long resident of this area. Van Winkle married the former Edna Edwards in June 1923. He had been employed at Shady Lane Creamery-Drumheller Co., and Teague Motor Co. for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife Edna at the home; his daughter Mrs Roscoe (Ilene) Strimple of Auburn, Wash.; his brother Lloyd VanWinkle of Tuscon, Ariz.; his sister Mrs. Florence Ward of California; his half Brother Herbert Erickson of Weiser, Idaho; his aunt Mrs. Alice Bowman of Walla Walla; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

WESTON - A collision of a pickup truck and sedan near Elgin Monday afternoon fatally injured Dale G. Erickson, 58, of Weston and also injured two others.
Erickson, who had lived in Weston all of his life, died in a La Grande hospital Monday evening. Mrs. Erickson was also hospitalized with a broken jaw and bruises.
The Ericksons were passengers in the car driven by their son-in-law, Bruce McGuire, of Davenport, Wash., who suffered a broken nose and cuts and bruises. Mrs. McGuire suffered shock but was not hospitalized.
The pickup was driven by Robert Bolle with John E. Rysdam as passenger. Both are of Elgin and were not injured.
Besides his wife, the former Veryl Tucker, Erickson is survived by his sons, M. Sgt. Larry D. Erickson of Panama City, Fla., Michael S. Erickson of Fort Rucker, Ala., and Lyle Duane and Kevin at the home; daughters, Mrs. McGuire (Arlene) of Davenport and Vicki, at the home; a brother, Herbert of Weiser, Idaho; half-brothers, Lloyd Van Winkle of Tucson, Ariz. and Lowell Van Winkle of Walla Walla; a sister, Mrs. Florence Ward of Elgin; and six grandchildren.
Erickson was a member of the Church of the Brethren of Weston.

Howard C. Rambo, 86, of 1003 College St. died July 8, 2003, at home.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St, M-F. Private burial will be at M-F Cemetery. The memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Duane Geyer officiating.
Memorials may be made to Frazier Farmstead Museum or the Christian Aid Center through the funeral home.
Mr. Rambo was born March 18, 1917 in Umapine, OR to Leonard and Myrtle Dryden Rambo. He was raised by grandparents Tom and Mary Dryden. He graduated in 1936 from McLoughlin Union High School.
He married Lois Couch on Feb 14, 1942, in Wallowa, OR. He worked in the Portland shipyards prior to his service in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
He returned to Milton-Freewater after his discharge and owned and operated Rambo Welding for 24 years. After selling the business he worked at Frontier Machinery in Walla Walla for 13 years.
He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and was an avid fan of his grandchildren's school activities.
Survivors include his wife at home; two sons, Rick Rambo of M-F and Greg Rambo of Spokane WA, two daughters, Carol Winn of La Grande and Linda Bannister of Omaha, NE; half sister, Nadine Hiatt, El Paso, TX; half brother. Merle Rambo of La Grande; and six granddaughters. He was preceded in death by sister Ruby Bray; and two brothers, Fred and Ray Rambo.

Howard C. Rambo, 86, of Milton-Freewater, died at home July 8, 2003. He was born March 18, 1917, in Umapine to Leonard and Myrtle (Dryden) Rambo.
Mr. Rambo was raised by his grandparents, Tom and Mary Dryden. He attended Pleasant View School, graduated from McLoughlin Union High School in 1936 and married Lois Couch in Wallowa in 1942. Prior to WWII he worked in the Portland shipyards, served in the Navy during the war and returned to Milton-Freewater after the war where he owned and operated Rambo Welding for 24 years. He enjoyed salmon fishing in the ocean and made several trips to Alaska to fish and was an avid fan of his grandchildren's activities, especially sports.
Survivors include his wife Lois at home; sons Rick Rambo of Milton-Freewater and Greg Rambo of Spokane, Wash.; daughters Carol Winn of La Grande and Linda Bannister of Omaha, Neb.; half-sister Nadine Hiatt of El Paso, Tex.; half brother Merle Rambo of La Grande and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Bray; and two brothers, Fred and Ray Rambo. Memorial services were held July 14 followed by private interment at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

PORTLAND - Former Milton-Freewater resident, June Marr Porter, 92, died April 6, 2005, at Hope 'N' Care Residential Care Facility.
Private burial will be Saturday in Blue Mountain Memorial Gardens. The memorial Service will be 2 pm Saturday at Mountain View Funeral Chapel, 1551 Dalles Military Road. The Rev. Duane Geyer will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Montessori Earth School through the funeral home.
Mrs. Porter was born March 15, 1913, in Weston, to Vernie and Amy Hopkins Marr. She grew up on Weston Mountain and attended Weston High School and Eastern Oregon Normal; now Eastern Oregon State University in La Grande.
The couple made their home in Milton-Freewater. Following Mr. Porter’s death in 1999, she moved to Park Plaza Retirement Residence in Walla Walla where she lived until illness necessitated a move to Portland to be near her family.
She taught elementary school all of her adult life, spending most of those years at Ferndale School.
Mr. and Mrs. Porter enjoyed dancing with a grange group. She enjoyed growing flowers, walking, reading, traveling and spending time with friends. She especially liked trips to the beach and spending time with grandson, Christopher Foss.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Lee Foss; a sister Winetta Carlisle, and grandson, Christopher Foss, all of Portland. She was preceded in death by a sister Mae Johnson.

MAE JOHNSON
MILTON-fREEWATER - Mae Marr Johnson, 89, of 52833 Sunquist Road died at home March 10, 2004.
Visitation will be until 8 tonight and 9 am to 1 pm Saturday at Mountain View Funeral Chapel, 1551 Dalles Military Road. The funeral will be there at 2 pm Saturday with Maxine Hanks and Della Shaw officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow in Blue Moutain Memorial Gardens, 300 NE Myra Road.
Memorials may be made to American Heart Association through the funeral home.
Mrs Johnson was born Sept. 13, 1914 in Weston to Vernie L. and Amy Hopkins Marr. She graduated in 1933 from Weston High Sxhool as class salutatorian.
On Sept. 1, 1941, she married Hulette H. Johnson in Weston. They lived in Ukiah where they farmed wheat and cattle. They also lived in Pilot Rock, then took up fruit farming at M-F in 1954.
In 1968 she earned a licensed practical nursing degree from Walla Walla Community College and worked many years at St. Mary Medical Center. She was a cook for 15 years with Fruitvale School District.
She was a member of a worldwide fellowship of Christians and the LPN and Oregon Public Employees Associations.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially to the Oregon Coast. She loved time with family and friends and sharing her home with others. She also decorated her home with flowers.
The Johnson's moved in 1995 to Park Plaza Retirement Residence. Mr. Johnson died in 1998. In 2001 Mrs. Johnson returned to the M-F farm home where she was cared for by son and daughter-in-law Hulette M. and Shirley Johnson, who survive at home.
Survivors also include daughter and son-in-law Marla and Richard Hoag of Kennewich; two sisters, June Porter and Winetta Rufener Carlisle, both of Portland; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hulette Johnson of Park Plaza Retirement Residence died Sep. 12, 1998, at Walla Walla General hospital; he was 88.

Johnson was born April 4, 1910 in Freewater, to Fred and Myrtle Conrad Johnson. He attended elementary school in Touchet and graduated in 1929 from Touchet High School.
On Sept. 1, 1941, he married Mae Marr in Weston. He was engaged in agriculture all his life, first in wheat and cattle in Touchet, Ukiah and Pilot Rock, then in apples in Milton-Freewater. He continued to help his son manage the orchard until 1995 when he settled at Park Plaza.
The Johnson's enjoyed traveling. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. The Johnson's opened their home to those in need, and provided care there for a number of ill patients.
He served 10 years on the Blue Mountain Growers Board of Directors in M-F and was a member of the Blue Mountain and Washington State Hortculture societies. He was a weather reporter for many years for Fruit Growers Association and was a member of the worldwide fellowship of Christians.
Survivors include his wife, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Marla Mae Johnson Hoag and Richard Hoag of Kennewick; a son and daughter-in-law, Julette Marr and Shirley Johnson of M-F; four grandchildren, Marc Johnson, Brandon and Brian Hoag and Amy Sloan; a niece; and two nephews. His brother, Gilbert Johnson died at 2-1/2; his mother died in 1960 and his father in 1961.

Gordon R. Vickere
Former Milton-Freewater resident Gordon R. Vickere, 85, died on Aug. 8 at the Park Plaza Retirement Residence.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery with Pastor Clinton Powell of the First Baptist Church of Pendleton officiating.
Mr. Vickere was born on April 21, 1915 in Sheridan Wyo., to parents Thornton and Flossie McColl Vickere. As a young man Mr. Vickere worked in the Idaho woods with his brother and learned a great deal about carpentry. He learned to build everything from a gun cabinet to remodeling his different homes. An avid fisherman, Mr. Vickere spent many enjoyable hours fishing from his boat.
During the depression he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Diamond Lake, before he secured work on the railroad. He then moved on to work as a driver for Cascade National Gas in Seattle, where he was pleased to receive many "Safe Driving" awards. He retired from the gas company to a small farm in Umapine.
Mr. Vickere was a member of the Plumber and Pipefitters Union and also belonged to the Eagles Lodge and the Elks Lodge of Milton-Freewater. He also was a member of the Oregon State Sheriff#s Association.
He is survived by numerous children, one sister and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Forrest Hodgen
Forrest M. Hodgen, 53, of the Umapine area died Tuesday in a Walla Walla hospital.
Born May 19, 1916 in Umapine, he attended schools there. On March 21, 1941, he married Clara Aichele of Walla Walla.
Hodgen was in the Navy during World War II. After that he was employed for 13 years at a cannery.
He was a member of United Brethren Church of Umapine and of the American Legion Post No. 24 of Milton-Freewater.
Hodgen is survived by his widow, Clara, at the home, four daughters, Mrs. Duane (Sara Louise) Hoskins, Elgin, Mrs Craig (Patricia Ann) Carlson, Milton-Freewater. Cheryl Mae and Jennie Lee both at the home, three sons, Leroy adn Ronald, both at the home and Raymond, Milton-Freewater, his mother, Mrs. Clifford (Sara) Gerber, Umapine, his father, Rex Hodgen, Pendleton, four sisters, Mrs. Violet Wallawine, Summer; Mrs. Janet Tate, Walla Walla, Mrs. Jean Gallaher, Pendleton and Mrs. Carol Walestrom, Kentucky, and three brothers, Don and Lee Gerber, both of Milton-Freewater and Emery Gerber, Elgin. Four grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Munselle Rhodes Funeral Chapel in Milton-Freewater. Vault interment will follow in Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

KENNEWICK - Former area resident Janet Victoria Tate, 84, died Oct. 25, 2008, in Richland.
Private family viewing will be 4-5 pm Tuesday at Mueller's Chapel of the Falls, 314 West First Ave., Kennewick. The graveside service will be 1 pm Wednesday in Dayton Cemetery with the Rev. Mrs. Tate was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Umapine to Cliff and Sadie Rambo Gerber. She grew up and spent most of her childhood years in Palmer Valley, OR. She married Oakley A. Tate on June 16, 1941, in Dayton, The couple raised their three children in Starbuck. Mr. Tate died in 1982.
Mrs. Tate later lived in Milton-Freewater, Walla Walla and Kennewick. She worked at the Walla Walla County Store for many years prior to retiring.
She had many interests, including traveling, scrapbooking, watching rodeos, listening to gospel and county music and square-dancing. She was a member of Eastern Star Rebecca Lodge and belonged to the Methodist Church where she was baptized. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and friends. She was affectionately called "Sissy" by her grandchildren.
Mrs. Tate is survived by two sons, Duane Tate of Umapine and John Tate of Kennewick, a daughter, Connie Smith of Kennewick, eight grandchildren, Shawney Garbe, Kelli Tate, Jack Riggs, Sherrie Dallas, Tracy Glesener, Ted Tate, Pam Garland and Penny Richards; 17 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, LaDeen, Emery and Lee Gerber; two half brothers, Jack and Don Hodgen; two half sister, Violet Wallowine and Wretha Vickere.

Geraldine L. Schuster, 76 years of age, of Beatrice, Nebraska died at the Beatrice Community Hospital Friday night, March 24, 2006. She was born on December 14, 1929 in Elgin, Union County, Oregon. She married Richard Schuster on May 7, 1946 in Elgin and they moved to Sterling, Nebraska shortly afterward. She moved to Beatrice in 1970 and she worked for Kees Manufacturing in the assembly department for fifteen years. For her last two years she was a foster-grandparent at Cedar School. She enjoyed family gatherings, traveling, knitting, sewing, painting, gardening, car races, her dog ???Captain,??? sports, and swimming at the YMCA.
Survivors include two sons Robert Schuster and his wife Helen of Beatrice, Nebraska, Scott Seymour and his wife Paula of Hickman, Nebraska and one daughter Cindy Krumm and her husband Mark of Waverly, Nebraska. Seven grandchildren Paula Schuster Davis, Kristie Ray and her husband Melvin, Randi Emry and her husband Clark, Eric Gray and his wife Ashley Gray, Matthew Krumm, Kassondra Seymour and Anthony Seymour. Six great-grandchildren, Taylor Davis, Jaeden Peery, Michaela Davis, Trenton Peery, Austin Gray and Joshie Whitmore. Step-children Robin, Roger, Scott, Rusty, Shane, Betty and Nina Whitmore. Three brothers Dallas Witty and his wife Kathy of Portland, Oregon, Larry Trump and his wife Angie of Portland, Oregon and Keith Vickere of Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Sister-in-law Diane Witty of Olympia, Washington. Many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Eatha Hodgen Witty, one brother Stan Witty and her special friend Ralph Whitmore.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice, Nebraska with Captain James Curry officiating. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society with the Fox Funeral Home in charge. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home from 10:00 A.M. Monday until 10:00 A.M.
