Lewis Powell was a United Empire Loyalist. He came to Canada with his father Caleb Powell in 1783. Both Lewis and Mary are buried at the Hicksite Friends Buriel Ground in Newmarket, Ontario or the Pine Orchard Cemetery

LEWIS POWELL youngest son of Caleb Powell U.E. and Mary Weeks, was born in Dutchess Cty, N.Y. 10th April 1769. He married MARY ENDRESS of New Jersey 30 March 1791. Mary was born 24 April 1773 in New Jersey. Lewis and Mary had eleven children. Lewis arrived with his father Caleb on the ship "Eagle" a the port of St. John River, New Brunswick in 1783. Lewis died 10th July 1834 and is buried at the Hicksite Cemetery , Newmarket, Ontario. His wife Mary died 25 Oct 1836 and is buried at the same place.

Roxanna Powell Dales Obiturary...Drayton Advocate, Ontario Dec 13, 1905

Roxanna Powell, relict of the late Edward Dales, who died at the residence

of her son, Mr. E.E. Dales, Furniture dealer and Undertaker, Drayton, on

the 13 Dec, 1905, as the result of a paralytic stroke, was born at

Newmarket Dec. 18, 1832. Her parents were U.E. Loyalists and lived for a

time in Nova Scotia(formerly N.B.) before moving to Upper Canada. On Feb

3, 1848, she was married at Heidelberg, Waterloo, to Mr. Edward Dales, who

predeceased her in 1896. Their son Mr. Silas R. Dales of North Dakota, was

the first baby boy born in the Queens Bush,..on the farm now owned by Mr.

H. Stennett of this place. Their family consisted of four sons and four

daughters viz: Silas R. at Vernon N.D.,; Mrs. H. Healey (deceased) 1892),

Mrs. L. McKellar, Mrs. W.G. Salter, Toronto; Mrs. W.T. Hambly and Edward

Emes, Drayton; Henry Merlin (deceased 1890), Ivan Morton, Toronto; . The

friends from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. Lemuel Powell

sr., a brother, Mrs. Powell and Mr. Lemuel Powell jr., a nephew, of

Wallenstein.; Mr. and Mrs. H.K. McKellar of Berlin, Miss McKellar and

Messrs. Lochie and Roy McKellar and Master Silas Salter, of Toronto; Mr.

Jacob Dunke of Elmira, Mr. Hugh McCulloch of Hawkesville, Mr. Theodoro

Ruggle of Linwood, Mr. Archibald Kirkland and Messrs. K & R. Schroeder of

Toronto. Rev. W.P. Fletcher H. B.A. conducted the funeral service on

Sunday afternoon, 17th ult. The Toronto Casket Co. kindly sent one of

their staff to take charge of the funeral. The pall bearers were Messers.

E.F. and I.M. Dales (sons) Verner and William, Hambly. Harry and Lochie

McKellar (grandsons). The floral offerings, which were handsome were

contributed as follows. A beautiful pillow with the word "Mother" by

the children; Spray of calla lillies from Mr. S.R. Dales, N.D.;Wreath from

Mr. W.I. Hamblys family; Sickle, Mr. and Mrs. McKellar, Berlin: Spray by

Mr. & Mrs. Thompson, New York; Spray by Mr. and Mrs. Inglis, Toronto;

Spray by Miss Mary and Messrs. Lochie and Roy McKellar, Toronto. Wreaths

by the Toronto Casket Co. and Messrs. Simmens of Evel Casket Company,

Hamilton. Mrs. Dales was always a very ready helper in all cases of

sickness and tendered her friends and neighbors valued services in the

early days when doctors were scarce. Out of respect to the bereaved and

the sorrowing family, the funeral was very largely attended

 

3. JACOB2 POWELL (LEWIS1)3 was born 24 Mar 1817 in Whitechurch, York County, Ontario, and died 16 Dec 1904 in Prob Nebraska. He married AMY HUGHES 30 Oct 1839 in King Township, York County, Ontario. She was born 10 Jun 1821 in Whitchurch, , Ontario, Ontario, and died 17 Dec 1881 in Brothertown, , WI.

Marriage Notes for JACOB POWELL and AMY HUGHES:

Walter Powell Milton-Freewater, OR, has the original hand-written marriage

certificate of Jacob Powell and Amy Hughes. The "Friends" called Quakers,

were opposed to taking oaths and put little stock in church ritual. This

certificate was in lieu of a marriage license. This ceremony was before a

monthly meeting of the Society of Friends, and all the members were

witnesses.

 

Walter also has copies of the birth, marriage and death records from the

Family Bible.

Lee Carlson

MILTON-FREEWATER -- Lee Carlson, 84, 710 N. Main. died in a MIlton-Freewater nursing home yesterday.

Born in Stockholm Sweden, July 4, 1888, he came to the United States as a small child with his parents settliing in Minnesota.

Later, he moved to Adams, Ore., and married Amy Clem in Milton-Freewater, July 2, 1949. She died in August 1972.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held in the Olney Cemetery in Pendleton at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Mark Gustafson officating.

FAY A BLAKNEY

PROSSER -- Mrs. Fay A Blakney, 82, died Monday at the Prosser Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness.

Survivors include two sons, Phil Blakney of Prosser; George Blakney, Seattle; 11 grandchildren; brother, Walter Powell and sister, Mrs. Lee Carlson, both of Milton-Freewater, Oregon.

Services will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Ingle Chapel in Milton-Freewater, Ore., under direction of Benton Funeral Home of Prosser. Burial will be in the Milton-Freewater cemetery.

Walter Powell Sr., 77, of 160 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, died at a Milton-Freewater nursing home Friday.

Powell was born July 8, 1894, in Columbus, Neb., the son of Mr. and Mrs. walter L. Powell. The family moved to the Powell farm near Milton-Freewater in 1902.

He was educated in Ferndale School adn was valedictoriian of the first class to graduate from Ferndale High School in 1914. On Dec. 24, 1914, he married Margaret I. Warner at her parents' home on Stanley Creek, south of Pilot Rock.

The couple moved to the family home on Winesap Road where they lived until just before his death. Powell was a retired farmer and contractor. He belonged to Ingle Chapel Church and had been a long-time member of the Ferndale School Board and the Election Board.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, at the home; a son, Walter Powell, Jr.; a daughter, Mrs. Max (Wauna) Piper; and a sister, Mrs. Lee (Amy) Carlson, all of Milton-Freewater; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, in the chapel of the Munsell-Rhodes Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Morrison officiating. Vault interment will follow in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.
