5. PEYTON2 PARKS (WILLIAM1) was born 12 Oct 1800 in near Stanford, Lincoln County, Kentucky, and died 15 Nov 1880 in near Calhoun, Henry County, Missouri. He married ALMIRA PARKS 09 Feb 1825 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, daughter of PEYTON PARKS and REBECCA YANTIS. She was born 26 Aug 1809 in Kentucky, and died 07 Jul 1846 in Henry County, Missouri.

Notes for PEYTON PARKS:

Calhoun Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO

Henry County Democrat, Nov 1880 - Peyton Parks Biographical Sketch of the Venerable Deceased - His Official Duties as Assessor and County Seat Commissioner Died - At his home, with his son, Y. P. Parks, near Calhoun, Henry county, Mo., on Monday morning, Nov. 15th, 1880 of general debility, Mr. Peyton Parks, aged 80 years. Mr. Parks was a man of feeble constitution, by his prudent and regular habits of life, attained the advanced age of 80 years. He was the youngest of six brothers. His parents were born and raised in the State of Virginia and emigrated to the State of Kentucky at an early day and settled in Lincoln county in that state, near Stanford the county town where Mr. Parks was born on the 12th day of October, 1800. About the time he came of age, he studied law, first reading with a cousin of his by the name of Forbes, and afterward with Robert Letcher, who was afterwards Governor of the state. About the year 1821, he was admitted to practice law in the courts of the State of Kentucky. In the early part of the year 1825, he married and in the fall of 1827, with his family, then consisting of his wife and two children, he moved to the State of Missouri, and settled in Cooper county, about 15 miles south of Boonville, where he continued to reside for about seven years. While living in Cooper county, he was examined and licensed to practice law in the courts of this state by Judge Tompkins, of the Supreme Court, but owing to his feeble health he never engaged in the active practice of his profession. In the fall of 1834, he moved to this county (then being a part of Lafayette county) and settled about three miles northwest of where the town of Calhoun now is. In the year 1835, this county was organized by the name of rives, and Mr. Parks was appointed to make the assessment of the taxable property of the county, for the year 1836. At the November term of the County court for the year 1836 - the court at that time being held at the house of Wm. Goff, one of the Judges, one mile south of Calhoun - he was appointed commissioner, with power to superintendent and lay off the site selected for a county seat, into town lots, and make sale of the same, which he proceeded to do, giving the town the name of Clinton. After he made the first sale of lots, he resigned, and the late John F. Sharp was appointed commissioner to make deeds and future sales of the lots. In the year 1844, he was elected to represent this county in the general assembly of the State, and discharged his duties as such representative with honor and credit to himself and constituents, among such men as Hamilton R. Gamble, Willis L. Williams, C. F. Jackson, B. F. Stringfellow and W. V. N. Bay, who were members of that assembly. In all his relations of public trust, he discharged his duties with care and strict fidelity, and entire satisfaction. As a private citizen he was universally loved and esteemed by those who knew him; as a neighbor he was ever kind and obliging; as a husband and father he was loving, affectionate and indulgent. He was a mason, and that broad and comprehensive charity which distinguishes the order, was a prominent element in his character. He was a firm, consistent and undoubting believer in the Universal Salvation of all mankind, and was cheered and sustained in his last moments by his faith, and retained his mental power to the last. His wife, Mrs. Almira Parks died on the 7th day of July, 1846. He had also lost two sons - Peyton M., who died October 5th, 1846 and John A., who died August 10th, 1847. His other children, six to number - four sons and two daughters - all reside in Henry county, Mo., and were all with him in his last sickness. A good man has gone from among us, but by his life has left to his children and friends a legacy more valuable than much riches. Let us emulate his example.

Notes for JOHN ALEXANDER WITHERSPOON:

WITHERSPOON, John Alexander - 1842 - 1903

Bethlehem Cemetery, Bethlehem Twp, Henry Co, MO

Clinton MO - J. A. Witherspoon died at his home in Bethlehem Township November 24, 1903 of muscular rheumatism. John Alexander Witherspoon was in the 62nd year of his age. He was born Oct. 5, 1842 in Leesville Township, within 3 miles of the farm upon which he died. Most of all of his uneventful life was spent in Henry County. Mr. Witherspoon belonged to the type of manhood which is rapidly becoming extinct in our county and nation. Born admidst the stern surroundings of pioneer life, it was but natural that those principles of truth, honor and virtue which characterized our foreparents should make an indelible impression upon him. Truth and honor were so familiar to him that the writer has often heard it said that if Uncle Alec said so and so of a certain matter or thing, that settled it, it was just that way. In 1865, Mr. Witherspoon was married to Rouena Garland, a daughter of Uncle Richard Garland of Brownington. They raised four children: J. R., G. E., Charles and Ernest, all of whom have attained their majorities and are respected and honored citizens of this community. While he professed religion, he never united with any church. During his last illness, he expressed himself as being perfectly satisfied respecting his future. He was a sufferer from acute muscular rheumatism for over two years. He was moderately successful in business and leaves his family well-provided for financially. - G. T. Hunt

Notes for MARY H. TURNER:

PARKS, Mary H. TURNER - 1856 - 1933

Parks Chapel Cemetery, Leesville Twp, Henry Co, MO

Mrs. Mary H. Parks Died - At her home on North Fourth Street, Friday, April 28th, at 3:30 p.m. she had been ill the past four years, and bedfast and helpless the three weeks previous to death. Her sister, Mrs. W. H. Parker, has not been well, and was unable to care for Mrs. Parks, so for the past year and a half, Mr. and Mrs. Otto McCurley have given the deceased care equal to that of a son and daughter. They lived on her farm 13 years previous to moving to her home, and during the time they have been with here, have left nothing undone to make her happy, contented and comfortable. Mary H. Turner was born in Leesville township, February 28, 1856, where she grew to young womanhood, and when she was 17 years old, on May 4th was united in marriage to John L. Parks. Theirs was a happy companionship until he died October 3, 1913. She stayed on the farm awhile, then lived with Mrs. Parker, but as she enjoyed a home of her own, purchased the North Fourth street property, so she could be in Clinton near her sister and near her church. This had been her home since. Mrs. Parks was converted before her marriage and had united with the Christian church. She was a devout Christian, her delight being to heed the admonitions and instructions given by the Savior. She was a regular attendant at church, and her hands were ever ready to do the nearest tasks, and give tender ministry to anyone in need. Mrs. Parks was a meticulous housekeeper and thoroughly enjoyed keeping her home. It was fortunate that Mrs. McCurley was as good a housekeeper as Mrs. Parks, and the latter was to her last day, surrounded with cleanliness, order and sunshine. The deceased was devoted to her sister, Mrs. Parker, who was unable to get out of the house often, and though she herself was in ill health, she was able to walk and visit Mrs. Parker frequently and dined with her often. They always observed birthdays, holidays and important events, together, so on Mrs. Parker will hardest fall the death of her sister. She also leaves one brother, John Turner who lives on South Main street, in Fairview addition. A short prayer service was conducted by Rev. A. N. Lindsey at the home Sunday. He also conducted another prayer service at the home of Mrs. Parker, then the body was taken to Parks Chapel, in the southeast part of the county, by Spore & Son. Rev. Lindsey conducted the funeral, to a large crowd of friends and neighbors, who loved her and knew her true worth. The long time neighbors and friends acted as pallbearers, and tenderly laid Mrs. Parks body to rest by the side of her late husband.

TURNER, John P.

source: 1883 History of Henry and St. Clair Counties Missouri , National Historical Co., pg: 782

--- Captain John P. Turner, farmer and stock raiser, section 29, is a native of Bourbon County, Kentucky, and was born December 18, 1821. His father, Joseph Turner, a Virginian by birth, went to Kentucky when a young man and there married Susan Parks. John P. passed his younger days on the home farm, receiving his education at the Bourbon County Seminary where he acquired a fair education in the common English branches. In the spring of 1844 he came to Henry County, Missouri, and bought and entered 408 acres of land on Cedar Creek near Grand River. Mr. Turner was married in this county in the fall of 1844 to Miss Rosa J. Parks, a daughter of Reuben Parks, a pioneer settler of the county. There were eight children by this marriage, three of whom are living: Perez, John and Nancy B.; five are deceased. Mrs. Turner died in November, 1874. The captain was again married, this time in Indiana, March 8, 1877, to Mrs. Harriet E. Duggins, a daughter of R. W. Mullis. She is a native of Hancock County, Indiana, but was reared and educated in Fayette County. They have three children: Lela Myrtle, Ala Delle and Bonnie. Mr. Turner served during the war in the Enrolled Missouri Militia and was captain of a company. He was also appointed and acted as county judge but resigned the position in 1864 and was then appointed assessor and made the assessment of the county. He also was elected under the township organization, assessor of his township, all of which positions he has filled faithfully and impartially

LOGAN, William

source: 1883 History of Henry and St. Clair Counties Missouri , National Historical Co., pg: 778

--- William Logan, farmer and stock raiser, section 36, also a pioneer of Henry County, was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, April 22, 1825. His parents, David and Nancy Logan, nee Parks, were natives of Kentucky. In 1826, the family moved to Missouri, and first located in Cooper County, where they resided about seven years, coming thence to Henry County In 1835, and being among the early settlers of the vicinity. They entered land on Grand River and improved a farm in what is now Leesville Township. William Logan grew to manhood here and was married in the county in December 1846, to Miss Nancy Parks, a daughter of Reuben Parks, of this county. After his marriage, Mr. Logan settled on the farm where he now resides, buying raw land and improving it. He has 280 acres, with about 160 under fence and improved. Mr. and Mrs. L. have nine children: Franklin, Eliza J. (wife of Henry Pigg), Mary (wife of J. R. Parks), David R., William P., George V., Mattie P., Annie T., and John Alexander.

Livestock Shipments

John D. Snyder & Sons shipped a carload, 27 head, of mules to Memphis, last Thursday. Willie Snyder went along to care for the shipment. John D. followed on Friday to oversee their sale in the Tennessee metropolis.

John D. Snyder & Sons shipped 31 head of white-face steers and 33 head of hogs to the Kansas City market, Monday. The whitefaces averaged about 270 pounds, and brought 10 cents on Tuesday market.

John D. Snyder has been ?kidded? quite a bit because of an error in last week?s Independent. The item stated that his 34 head of whiteface steers averaged 270 pounds in weight and brought 10 cents. Rather lightweight steers, thought the readers. The whitefaces really averaged 1300 pounds in weight and brought 11 ? cents per pound. His 33 head of hogs, shipped at the same time averaged the 270 pounds and brought 10 cents per pound on the market.

?My wife sure had a hearty laugh over the mistake,? said John D.

25. MALINDA CATHERINE4 PARKS (PEYTON3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born 28 Jan 1861 in Henry County, Missouri, and died 20 Mar 1954 in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri. She married JAMES WARTON PIGG 14 Jun 1877 in Henry County, Missouri. He was born 26 Jan 1855 in Calhoun, Henry County, Missouri, and died 03 Oct 1938 in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri.

Burial: 23 Mar 1954, Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, Henry County, Missouri

Notes for JAMES WARTON PIGG:

PIGG, James Wharton - 1855 - 1938

Englewood Cemetery PF-RH, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO

Clinton MO - J. W. Pigg, 83, Died Oct. 3 - Life-Long Resident of Henry County, Son of Pioneer Ancestry - Had Lived Near Calhoun - Death that had lingered two weeks, as though reluctant to take from realms of life the fine spirit and noble soul of James W. Pigg, bore him aloft at 3:00 p.m. Monday, October 3. For hours he had been in a state of coma, and breath became gradually more measured until the end. As he had lived at peace with men, so his passing was quiet, though it brought tears to those he had loved through the long years of his gallant life. He had been confined to his bed but two weeks, yet with activities curtailed by impaired vision and declining health, he never became discouraged or sad, but lived with faith in the promises of his Creator. James Wharton Pigg, born January 26, 1855, in Tebo Township near Calhoun, was the son of Reuben Pigg and Emily Parks Pigg, natives of Kentucky who came with pioneer parents in covered wagons to wrest an empire from the western wilderness. The Parks family homesteaded near Coal and the Pigg family, their relatives, in the Calhoun neighborhood. Young James, a boy of slight build, was educated in the rural schools of the neighborhood, Plum Grove, Merritt, Turner and Logan, to which he went, often fording streams in wet seasons and muffler over face and ears in the coldest winters. He was reared in the Universalist church of which his family had all been members and they built a house for worship near their farm, which they shared with other denominations, reserving it for their use the fourth and fifth Sundays. June 14, 1877, his cousin, Malinda Catherine Parks, of near Coal became his bride. Uncle Billy Lawler performed the ceremony and they began their life together on the farm southeast of Coal, now owned by their daughter, Mrs. J. E. Delozier and her husband. Six children were born to them, one little daughter who never lived, being the only one who does not today survive, and as though to wipe away the sorrow of her loss they took an infant niece, Elsie, whom they reared as their own and who returned to them a daughter's love. Death since had never touched their family circle as the shadows have grown long on life's pathway they have had the blessing of much love. Mr. Pigg was both a farmer and a carpenter. He took pleasure in seeing abundant crops grow from rich soil and learned the secrets of nature she reserves to those who understand her best. He also had the art of the craftsman in his hands and the skill of the musician, for he was a violinist of local repute, and it was at a "Play-party" that the first met his wife. Energetic and capable he builded for his neighbors between farming seasons and after moving to Clinton in 1925 did a good deal of carpenter work. All of his married life he spent on the above mentioned farm until he moved to Clinton, save for four years they spent in Washington, where they had gone thinking to locate near their daughter who was living there. A great student of the bible, from which he could quote long passages, Mr. Pigg, read it until dimming eyes made a thick magnifying glass necessary. Then as more light was shut out, his daughter, Mrs. Delozier came daily to read to him and sometimes in her place his granddaughter, Miss Barbara, for whom he had the tenderest affection. His tenets changed with the years and maturity, until he was bound by no creed but walked in the way of the Truth as he found it in the scriptures. His garden was his hobby and the abundant growth he cultivated there was a source of great pride. What his family did not use, his frugal wife put into cans for winter needs. His skill with his knife and bit of wood passed away many other hours and for every daughter he carved an intricate chair from white hedge wood, fitting them together with particular care for minute details. Many children in the neighborhood had toys he had carved and shaped for them, and exhibited on the square some time ago was a prairie schooner and a yoke of oxen he had carved with meticulous care. He had also a violin or two he had made, selecting the wood with elaborate thought and producing a finished instrument that would have been a credit to any master craftsman. Loved and watched over always by the gentle care of the sweet and devoted wife, he depended on her and took inspiration from her, and like her he was gentle, kindly, considerate and good. At the time of his passing they had the distinction of being the longest married of any native born Missourians of which the Eye had record, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary a year and a half ago. Surviving Mr. Pigg are his widow, daughters, Mrs. J. E. Delozier, and Mrs. Eva Cartledge of Clinton; Mrs. J. D. Donahue of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Ed Grossheider of Portland, Ore., who had come two weeks ago, called by his failing heath; Mrs. C. W. Lee of Kansas City and one son, Harry S. Pigg, of Portland, Ore. The funeral services were conducted by a Jehovah Witness from Kansas City, at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Consalus & Peck Funeral Home. Interment at Englewood. Pallbearers were Charlie Albin, John W. Smith, Roy Terrill, Yantis Pigg, Frank Chanselor and Jeff LaRue.

KEYES, Lyman Wilbur "Babe" - 1885 - 1936

Englewood Cemetery KA-KZ, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO

Clinton MO - Babe Keys Dies Suddenly - Well Known Clinton Man Succumbs To Attack Of Heart Trouble At Home - Babe Keyes, as he was generally known to friends, succumbed to an attack of heart trouble at 5:30 Monday morning at his home, 412 South McLane Street. He did not feel well Sunday but took a drive in the afternoon and went to bed as usual to wake about 2 a.m. feeling ill. His wife administered to him and he apparently slept but after five Mrs. Keyes awoke to hear her husband making a strange noise and before doctors or friends could be summoned, life had escaped its human dwelling place and that good husband, kind father, fine son and devoted brothers, Babe Keyes, had slipped into his eternal sleep. Lyman Wilbur Keyes was born at Rolla, Mo., October 30, 1885, the son of Lyman Eugene Keyes and Clara Dean Keyes. He came with his parents to Clinton in 1891. Mr. Keyes was educated in the Clinton schools, then helped his father fun the Keyes Mill on Washington street. This mill burned in 1916 and he and his father rebuilt their business that same year and established the mill at the corner of Washington and Ohio streets, which was one of the well known Clinton business institutions for many years. After closing the mill, Babe and his father for a short time ran a feed store on the west side of the square in one of the Britts buildings, now occupied by Lewis's. Two years ago L. E. Keyes retired from business and Babe went to work for Larabee Mills, where he has been employed the larger part of the last two years then his health permitted, as he had not been well during that time. March 4, 1909, he and Miss Nellie L. Raney were united in marriage by Rev. Gaither of the First M. E. Church at the parsonage. One daughter blessed their union, Clayta, now Mrs. Carl Shoe of West Ohio street, Clinton, and her three children, Marilyn, Shirley Jean and Eugene, were a source of great pride and happiness to their grandfather. Mr. Keyes and his wife joined the First M. E. church after their marriage, and their church home was ever important and inspiring to them. He was also a member of the royal Arch in Masonry, the Eastern Star, and the Woodmen of the World for many years, and was planning to go as a delegate to a Royal Arch meeting in Jefferson City. Friday evening, however, he attended his last Masonic meeting in Clinton and there as elsewhere he will be greatly missed. Babe was a man of fine character and high principle, who had no bad habits and on whom his devoted family and friends depended as a source of strength and dispenser of kindness. He was loved by all who knew him, respected by others and was ready to meet his Maker, though the summons was sudden and the shock to those left behind hard to accept. Mr. Keyes is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Keyes, of McLane street, his widow, only daughter and three grandchildren, two brothers, D. W. Keyes of Clinton and P. C. Keyes of New Franklin, Mo. The funeral was conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the First M. E. church by Rev. Olsen and interment with Masonic rites followed at Englewood. The body was borne to rest by Messrs. Dan Lovelace, Lawrence Maher, E. O. Romine, Dwight Sayles, Sandy Brandenburg and Carter Canan.

Subject: Fwd: Marjean Langley

I found your website with the history of the Olinger and Langley families.

Marjean Langley was one of my classmates in the 1950s and early 1960s at Ferndale Elem. School, in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. I've always wondered whatever became of her. She was a lovely person.

If you have any additional resources or suggestions for how I might locate her, please let me know. Or, if you cannot give out information, please feel free to forward my note along to her.
